As the winter turns to spring, much buzz continues around Canterbury-on-the-Lake. As a result of Board, resident, and staff planning for more than five years, our vision is finally coming to life in the form of renovations to The Pavilion, Canterbury’s skilled nursing, as well as the construc-tion of our 32-bed, assisted living level memory care community.

The Meadows, our 24,000 square foot memory care community, will complete Canterbury’s continuum of care and add to our current offerings of independent living and assisted living apartments, short term rehabilitation and long term care.

When I think of why the full continuum is so important to us, I am reminded of the number of long time residents who have had to leave Canterbury in the last 12 months because we were not able to provide a secure setting to support those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of

dementia. In the last year, we have had 10 residents leave us because we could not provide that secure setting. One of those residents called Canterbury home for nine years.

While we know why the expansion is important to our Canterbury family, it is also so important to the service of the greater community. More than 5 million people are living with the disease, and by 2050 that number is expected to be almost 14 million. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, Canterbury is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors – community leaders who volunteer their time and resources to our community in a number of ways throughout the year. In addition to attending Board meetings, the members are asked to participate in two additional committees. There are eight committees that meet approximately four to eight times per year. The committees include Buildings and Grounds, Governance, Nominating, Quality of Care, Finance, Fund Development, Strategic Planning and the Executive Committee. The Canterbury board is comprised of 16 members.

The Board of Directors provides Canterbury with direction and advice. It is their responsibility to ensure that Canterbury fulfills its mission by administering guidance to the leadership team on how to best execute the community mission and vision. Canterbury-on-the-Lake is very fortunate to have such a dedicated, knowledgeable and experienced group of individuals serving our senior community.

It Started With A Gift

Here at Canterbury, we love to tell the story about Matilda Caniff’s gift of $1,500 that was the first step in our organization’s history. Without Mrs. Caniff’s gift there is no telling whether or not St. Luke’s Hospital in Detroit would have ever been founded.

One thing we do know is that Canterbury’s history is peppered with stories of generosity. When we were St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Home in Highland Park, Dr. David Burr Moreing established a fund in memory of his wife Maude devoted to activities and programs designed to benefit res-idents. Our history was further enriched by the generosity of Jane Windeler-Lawrence when she agreed to sell her 44-acre farm to St. Luke’s in order to build what we now know as Canterbury-on-the-Lake.

Financial GiftsHere are just a few of the ways that you can make a gift:

• Will or Revocable Living Trust. Designate a specific amount or percentage to Canterbury. A contingency bequest names Canterbury to asreceiver of the remainder of your estate if other beneficiaries are deceased or cannot inherit.

• Permanent Endowment. A gift that establishes or contributes to a permanent endowment.

• Charitable Gift Annuity. Transfer cash or appreciated property in exchange for a fixed income (with rates based on your age) for the rest of your life.

• A Charitable Remainder Trust. Also an annuity trust, it pays out a fixed amount each year based on the value of the property at the time it is gifted. There is also the potential that your income could increase over time with growth in the trust.

• Insurance Policy. Give your life insurance policy to Canterbury and receive a charitable income tax deduction. Then make deductible contributions each year that we may use to pay the premiums. You can also designate Canterbury as the beneficiary of your life insurance policy.

• Beneficiary Designations. Name Canterbury the beneficiary on IRAs, CDs, commercial annuities, savings accounts and savings bonds. Also, if you are 70½ or older, you can make a gift of up to $100,000 to Canterbury from your IRA to meet your annual distribution requirement. By making an IRA charitable rollover gift, you will avoid taxes on the IRA distribution while supporting our charitable mission.

The impact of your planned gift will have a lasting and positive influence on generations of residents here at Canterbury. Please contact Susan Hammersmith at 248-674-5390 for information on how you can leave your legacy.

The growth of Canterbury is dependent on generosity as well. We are witnessing generosity in progress – the construction of our memory care community and Pavilion remodel. A large bequest gift was the catalyst to our Board and Leadership team’s decision to move forward with expanding our community so that we are able to serve a wider population of seniors in Southeastern Michigan.

A gift to Canterbury touches the lives of our residents, their family members, and many others.

Gifts to the Good Samaritan Fund provide financial support to our residents who have outlived their savings. The Life Enrichment Fund ensures that we have constant activities and programs that keep our residents active and engaged. Gifts to special projects such as the memory care building and the rooftop garden in the Pavilion keep the Canterbury Experience alive for current and future residents.

One of the features of Canterbury’s campus that our residents and family members love most are the extensive gardens, walking paths and natural setting that our 40+ acre campus is blessed with. Outdoor spaces are less convenient for our residents who live on the second and third floors of the Pavilion.

We want to enrich the lives of our residents by providing a easily accessi-ble outdoor setting. Unused space on the third floor of the Pavilion has been identified as the ideal location for a rooftop garden that overlooks the south side of our campus. The garden will include raised garden beds, covered seating and a pathway that will be accessible for wheelchairs and walkers.

At Canterbury, we are fortunate to be able to serve a truly amazing and diverse group of people in a setting that people are proud to call home. We are constantly looking for ways to improve and better the lifestyle of all of the residents who call Canterbury home.

If you are interested in learning more about this important project, contact Susan Hammersmith at 248-674-5390.

Staff training in this nationally recognized program has already begun to ensure that our team will passionately dedicate each day to life affirming activities, enriching the lives of residents entrusted in our care.

For those making Canterbury a temporary stop for rehabilitation, our goal is to create a space conducive to high quality, state of the art therapies; and a peaceful, private environment in which to heal. The renovation inThe Pavilion will include the creation of 12 private rooms with private bathrooms; and an expansion of the rehabilitation gym to offer services.

Canterbury will continue to accept Medicare and Medicaid, a variety of managed care and long term care insurance policies. We also will continue to support those residents in need through out Good Samaritan Fund.

I am thrilled to share our plans and how our vision is coming to life. We look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses, but feel free to stop in and see this change for yourself!
