Zipcars at JWU Aren't Just for Students!

Notes of Appreciation

Kudos to the following employees/departments for their dedication to students and going the extra mile.

Resident students from Becky Budynkiewicz, assistant director of residential communities

Residential Life worked hard this year in the community providing service to many different organizations. I am pleased to announce in total we particpated in 1,609 hours. Especially, Centennial House - our cooperative housing option on campus who has a focus on community service in Cranston, RI, participated in 793 hours! Thank you to all who participated and helped with these projects.

JWU student Elizabeth Buckley to Mary Oulette, student services associate, UniversityTransfer & TestingI wanted to take a moment to thank you for the answers you provided to my many questions over the past five years - I am grateful. It is people like

you that make JWU such a special place.

A JWU parent to Courtney Greene, student financial planning counselor, Student Financial ServicesCourtney was very helpful in her advice on next steps to take with Financial Services for my son to reconcile his summer session internship with

his FAFSA in terms of 2015-2016 financial aid. Michael stopped by the front desk the next day and all his paperwork was revised in 30 minutes. She understood the anxiety on my side for quick remediation since the bill was due on May 1. Typically, Financial Services has always been very responsive, but in this recent situation I felt that I connected with their A-team with Courtney. Thank you JWU!

A JWU parent thanks JWU This is my son Michael's last year. He will graduate in December. JWU has done so much for Michael in terms of developing his technical culinary

skills and hospitality management skills. But Michael has also matured in many other aspects. He is more responsible, independent, resourceful. I believe JWU has played a significant role in his personal development too. I do and will continue to recommend JWU. In my opinion as a parent, it is the premier culinary/hospitality institute.

Campus Dining Chefs Showcase RIJennifer Marshall, administrative coordinator,

Auxiliary Services

JWU Campus Dining employees took part in the National Association of College & University Food

Services (NACUFS), Epicurean Pause, on Friday, March 20. Designed for attendees to experience the talent and big flavors RI has to offer, chefs from Brown, RISD, RIC, URI, and JWU were challenged to utilize local ingredients and beverages that they could incorporate into their dining and catering programs.

"It was good to see all of the local schools come together and produce elegant appetizers from locally sourced products. Each person on the team contributed their own culinary talents and set of skills to make the event successful."

JWU "A Breath of Fresh Air" for DOE ReviewersBy Lynn Robinson, vice-president, Student Academic & Financial Services

In early March, the Financial Aid Office received a letter from the Department of Education (DOE) indicating they would be coming on

campus to conduct an Federal Student Aid (FSA) Program Review. A group was assembled to review the letter and coordinate the required materials. The following items were assembled in preparation for the review:

• Consumer Information document with URL's sent via email• Consumer Information hardcopy document that was mailed• Recipient Data Spreadsheet for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015• Schedule meetings with the regional campuses• Schedule "prep" interviews with specific Providence campus staff

to prepare for the visitThe auditors were on campus for one week, March 30-April 3, and selected 15 student financial aid files for each year,

2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The program reviewers had a checklist of items they were testing for compliance to all federal regulations.Upon the completion of the review during the exit discussion, the reviewers indicated that they had no findings; this was

extremely positive feedback. They further indicated they wished more universities had such orderly records, stating JWU was "a breath of fresh air." JWU recently received an Expidited Final Program Review Determination letter indicating there were no findings and the audit is closed.

Kudos and thanks to everyone who assisted in the audit collection process as well as team members in SAFS who spent an overwhelming amount of time and energy on the audit. JWU is extremely pleased with the outcome and applauds everyone for their commitment to compliance, transparency, and adherence to policy and practice.

Incoming Freshmen Excited to be “In @ JWU!”

Heidi McClarnon, admissions training specialist

To reignite the excitement for early acceptances, University Admissions Marketing launched the “I’m In @ JWU” campaign in March. Each accepted student received an

“I’m in @ JWU” banner, a letter from the University Involvement Board and a letter from Chancellor Bowen to parents. Social media was heavily used to tease the campaign and throughout the project. Approximately 8,000 students were included and, to date, there have been more than 400 mentions using the hashtag #JWUCats19, surpassing the goal of 300.

JWU Campus Tours “Virtually” Accessible

Heidi McClarnon, admissions training specialist

The Admissions website’s newest feature is virtual tour capability for all four campuses. Virtual visitors now have access to 360-degree views of JWU’s most popular meeting

spots, classrooms and labs, dining halls, fitness centers, athletic fields, residence halls and more.

Terra Dotta, the platform for the new JWU Study Abroad website

(studyabroad.jwu.edu), is a student-friendly online application system, brochure interface and program management platform. It helps provide JWU's diverse portfolio of opportunities so that all students, regardless of campus, major and socio-economic background, linguistic ability, academic level or personal limitations, have equal and consistent access to programming.

Terra Dotta eliminated paper applications, allowed more easily searchable program listings, clearly defined course equivalencies and informative program brochures. It also supports interactive and specific program searches based on multiple criteria such as language, country, term, target major, and housing preference. Students can also obtain information on events, like Study Abroad Fairs, information sessions, pre-departure orientations, re-entry workshops and the Study Abroad Ambassador Program.

The Study Abroad staff will be busy updating and enhancing the website over the summer, so keep an eye out for more updates. The world awaits, and through Terra Dotta, JWU is making it easier for students to explore!

Non-JWU Students Welcomed to Study Abroad

Elizabeth Allsworth, program manager, Study Abroad

Beginning in September, students from other academic institutions can participate alongside JWU students in select Study Abroad programs. This great opportunity will

enhance the JWU brand and showcase these unique study abroad academic opportunities.

The first, and currently only, program available to outside students is the French Baking & Pastry at École Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie (ENSP). There are few competitors for a baking and pastry study abroad program of this caliber, thus increasing its appeal in the marketplace.

To apply, students must meet a set deadline, demonstrate specific academic and career achievements and also meet typical program admittance criteria. JWU Study Abroad, JWU Admissions, and ENSP will review applicants for acceptance. Once accepted, these students become non-matriculating JWU students with a student ID number, JWU email, and access to jwuLink.

When the summer 2016 Study Abroad Program Portfolio is confirmed, JWU will likely identify additional programs to share with academic peers. Additional information can be found on the Study Abroad website.
