Shana Tovah. In the spirit of the season let us reflect on the year gone by. Where can we make amends? How can we enhance
our lives? As the president of Brotherhood, it is my responsibility to understand our organization’s strengths and weaknesses. What can Brotherhood do to better serve the temple? Brotherhood has done an outstanding job of supporting the temple, but there is room for improvement. Brotherhood hosted a rich variety of activities, but we did not reach enough of our Temple’s male members. Last year our membership dropped slightly. This year we plan on expanding our membership with a two pronged approach; we will continue to promote a variety of programs that satisfies a diverse range of tastes; an aggressive marketing program will complement the events program. The marketing program begins right now. Please respond generously to the solicitation letter you just received. You will be rewarded with an outstanding meal at our paid-up membership dinner. Let me now share some of the programs we will be hosting. Our calendar is so full I only have room to promote October’s line-up. The month, of course, begins with our various High Holy Days’ responsibilities. On October 11, a couple of days before Erev Sukkot, Sisterhood and Brotherhood will be sponsoring the year’s first Game Night. Bring your favorite game and a goodie to share. Game nights are always a blast, especially if you win.
Larry Magid, renowned high tech author, columnist and internet safety expert, will initiate this year’s Distinguished Speakers Series on Sunday, October 19. Nosh at 10:30am, discussion at 11:00am.
On October 26, Brotherhood and Sisterhood are teaming up to sponsor a trip to the Contemporary Jewish Museum. We are expecting a great turnout. If you plan on joining us, please RSVP ASAP. Bus transportation is available on a first come first served basis.
Brotherhood will be enhancing the Temple’s physical wellbeing this year, as well as its spiritual, academic and social wellbeing. Brotherhood plans on completing the long overdue renovation of the men’s restroom. Raising the necessary funds is a stretch and will require a significant effort on Brotherhood’s part.
Brotherhood needs your assistance in order to realize our aggressive agenda. Please join Brotherhood and join us at the next event. You will be doing a mitzvah by supporting your Temple and have a ton of fun in the process.
As we begin a new year, we are excited about our programming, We design our programs to meet the needs of our members so if you have any ideas or special interests, let us know! Our kickoff event at SkyHighSports was awesome! A ton of teens (grades 9-12) showed up for services, SkyHigh and dinner at Vesuvio’s Restaurant. We prayed, we jumped, we ate!

Jewish Literacy Ritual The annual cycle has begun. We have heard the awakening blast of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah; thrown our bread crumbs in the water with our sins and regrets at Tashlich; wished “L’Shanah Tovah” to all of our friends and relatives. In a few days we will join together again to hear the awe-inspiring Kol Nidre melody. We will fast (if we are able), pray and study in community on Yom Kippur. Providing these events for all to participate in is an effort of love from many individuals. It is also an effort of much hard work. No single person could do it all. The Ritual Committee extends its heartfelt thanks to: - Rabbi Dana Magat and Cantor Intern Meeka Simerly, for their inspirational words and music
- Dawn Chaffin, as High Holiday chairperson, for her expertise in making it all come together
- Brotherhood, for the bimah furniture setup and teardown at Heritage Theater and for ushering
- Sisterhood for providing the Break the Fast - my fellow Ritual Committee members for the Selichot and Healing Services and for scheduling and contacting honorees being given parts in the services
- our awesome Shofar blower and Ritual Committee Chair Mark Cahn
- the Religious School, Preschool and Temple staff, for the tireless work they do, starting months in advance to plan and administer the HHD activities for congregants of all ages

The High Holidays don’t end when you break your Fast! Within a few days, the temple sukkah will be built and renew our ties to our desert ancestry within its flimsy walls. Sukkot will end with Simchat Torah. We parade around the Sanctuary with our precious Torah scrolls and unroll one of them so that it encircles the congregation. We complete the year of reading Torah and begin again at Genesis and consecrate our new Religious School students as they begin their studies.

The annual cycle has begun. In the new year, we recall the words of Rabbi Harold S. Kushner:
A Prayer for the World Let the rain come and wash away the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds held and nurtured over generations. Let the rain wash away the memory
of the hurt, the neglect. Then let the sun come out
and fill the sky with rainbows. Let the warmth of the sun heal us
wherever we are broken.
Let it burn away the fog so that we can see each other clearly. So that we can see beyond labels, beyond accents, gender or skin color. Let the warmth and brightness of the sun melt our selfishness. So that we can share the joys and feel the sorrows of our neighbors. And let the light of the sun
be so strong that we will see all people as our neighbors. Let the earth, nourished by rain,
bring forth flowers to surround us with beauty.
And let the mountains teach our hearts to reach upward to heaven.
Shabbat Shuvah Shabbat Shuvah literally means "Sabbath of Return," but it is also a play on the phrase "Shabbat Teshuvah" (Sabbath of Repentance). It is the Shabbat that occurs between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and is a time for reflection leading up to the atonement of Yom Kippur. Shabbat Shuvah has two special haftarah readings, one dealing with the importance of heartfelt repentance (Hosea 14:2-10) and one praising the Creator's mercy (Micah 7:18-20).
Kever Avot Kever Avot, the custom of visiting graves of loved ones between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, has its roots in Eastern European Jewish traditions. "Visiting is a sign of respect, said Rabbi Moshe Rothblum of Adat Ari."We are also thinking about how we've acted in the past, and taking time to remember," he said of the timing of the custom.
Yom Kippur Elements Kol Nidrei signals the beginning of the Yom Kippur prayers. Viduy is when we recite quietly what we may have done wrong throughout the year. We take our fist and lightly tap the chest over the heart. This is as if to say, we regret in our hearts the wrong things we have done. Neilah, in Hebrew this means, "the locking of the gates." At the end of the day, the heavenly gates are locked and each and every person's judgment is sealed for the upcoming year. The Shofar is blasted one last time and then everyone says together: "Bashana Haba-ah, Next year in Jerusalem!"

Hi, my name is Adam Stanley Heerwagen and I’m having my bar mitzvah on October 11. I have 2 siblings, my older brother Zach 15, and my younger brother Ethan 11. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m doing Parshat Ha'azinu. For my mitzvah project, I raised money at my school to help stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. The biggest part of my life is music. I love music and I sing and play guitar. I also like to play football and basketball on my school teams.
Scott Lunell, son of Anita Lunell and Sean Lunell will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 18. Scott is in the 8th grade and is an honor student at Rolling Hills Middle School in Los Gatos, where he has been playing on the basketball team. Scott enjoys playing soccer, basketball, listening to music on his iPod and the radio as well as spending time with his friends. For his mitzvah project, Scott participated in several beach cleanups sponsored by the Surfrider Foundation, Santa Cruz Chapter. Scott, his parents and grandparents look forward to sharing this wonderful occasion with family and friends.
