Exceptional Strength

All DRIL-QUIP connectors are manufac-tured from high quality ring rolled alloyforgings. The unique geometry of theconnectors, combined with high qualitymaterials, provides for optimum bend-ing, tension and pressure capacities.

Rugged Thread Form

The rugged thread forms of the Quik-Thread and Multi-Thread connectorsare designed with a negative 5° angleon the load flank of the thread. This fea-ture provides an interlocking forceensuring a positive mechanical lockbetween the box and pin that preventsthread jump-out. The pitch of thethread provides for higher load carry-ing capacity while reducing stressconcentration. The non-interferencethread design reduces radial stresses inthe connection. The steep thread taperprovides thicker wall sections at thehigher load carrying first threads of thepin and box.

Reliable Sealing Capacity

A resilient seal located in the box pro-vides reliable high-pressure sealingcapacity. The seal is located below thethreads to prevent pressure migrationthrough the threaded area for increasedpressure sealing capacity. Dual metal-to-metal sealing is available as an option.

Positive Alignment

Alignment profiles above and below thethreaded section provide alignmentbefore thread contact occurs. Thisunique design assures perfect align-ment every time and preventscross-threading.

Fast Make-Up and Easy Handling

The Quik-Thread and Multi-Threadconnectors allow full joint weight of thecasing to be set into the box prior torotation. The make-up operation is aseasy as 1 - 2 - 3:

• Stab and set joint weight pin into box

• Minimum rotation required at low torque

• Final make-up to recommended torque

Quik-Thread and Multi-Thread connec-tors can be made up with rope andfinally torqued with rig tongs. Propermake-up can be visually verified by theposition of an indicator on the pin rela-tive to the face of the box.

EASY STABCan be stabbed evenwhen pin and boxare not perfectlyaligned

SELF-ALIGNINGAligning profilesalign connectorprior to threadmake-up. Crossthreading is not pos-sible

QUICK MAKE-UPLOW TORQUE Low final make-uptorque simplifiesinstallation.

ANTI-ROTATION DEVICES

Quik-Thread and Multi-Thread Connectors are oftenused in applications that require the use of anti-rota-tion devices. These devices prevent connectionback-out or over-torque that may occur as a result oftorsional forces or impact loads.

Torsional forces, for example, could be applied to theconnectors during make-up/release of mudline sus-pension running and tie-back tools, which requirerotation of the riser string. Impact loads generatedduring driving applications can result in connectorback-off or over-torque. Anti-rotation keys are avail-able to prevent both types of rotation.

DRIL-QUIP offers two types of anti-rotation devices:

• Horizontal cam key

• Vertical slot key

The connector selected for a given application determineswhich key is used.

Horizontal Cam Key

Quik-Thread and Multi-Thread connectors designedwith a secondary drive shoulder are designatedD-type connectors. These connectors are equippedwith horizontal cam-type anti-rotation keys.

Cam-style anti-rotation keys are installed into a matingcam-shaped slot on the OD of the pin. Diametricallyopposed keys are installed in opposite directions toprevent right or left hand rotation. The hardened keyshave serrations which bite into the top shoulder of thebox. Any attempt to rotate the pin is immediatelystopped by the caming action of the keys. The keysare retained in their slots by an Allen-head bolt andcan be easily removed, if necessary.

Vertical Slot Key

Quik-Thread and Multi-Thread connectors that donot have a secondary drive shoulder require verticalslot keys. When the key is installed into a slot in thepin, the serrations bite into the ID of the box, pre-venting rotation of the pin relative to the box. Thekey is captured in the slot to prevent disengagementduring driving operations. The key does not pro-trude past the OD of the box and can be easilyremoved, if necessary.

Driving applications frequently require anti-rotation keys.

FEATURES

Page 13: Connector Catalog

Unique Load-Carrying Design

The multiple load-shoulders on the lockring and box provide maximum loadbearing areas with minimum lock ringtravel. This means higher load capacitywith more load-carrying steel per inchof cross section than conventional lockring type connectors. The design of thelock ring provides a positive lock of thepin and box members. The dual taperensures that the lock ring is movedfully into the box grooves and remainsthere under all load conditions.

DRIL-QUIP NO-CROSSSaves Rig Time

Prevents Cross-Threading

The DRIL-QUIP No-Cross Couplingis a replacement to the standardAPI Buttress Casing Coupling. TheNo-Cross includes a self-alignmentsection above the threads of thecoupling which aligns the pipe tothe coupling during stabbing andprior to initiation of thread make-up, eliminating cross threading. Thecoupling's threaded section is iden-tical to a standard API ButtressCoupling and, therefore, is compati-ble with standard API ButtressCasing Threads. The No-Cross hasthe same joint strength as the stan-dard API Buttress Coupling.

Standard API Coupling Cross Threaded

Fully Tested

Field simulated function testing wasconducted on both the No-Cross andAPI Buttress Couplings. The testingconsisted of repeated stab and make-upof casing joints into couplings at vari-ous angular misalignments, simulatingfield misalignments.

The standard API Coupling crossthreaded at 1° angle. The No-CrossCoupling made up successfully at a 4°angle even when external side load wasapplied. In every case, when the pipejoint was stabbed, it aligned itself with-in the No-Cross Coupling before threadmake-up was initiated.

Summary of FieldSimulated Function Test

Page 20: Connector Catalog

DRIL-QUIP specialty connectors are designed to offersuperior operational and strength characteristics. The first step in the design process is the conceptualdevelopment of a connector that provides a fast, safeand efficient means of connecting casing jointsunder worst-case field conditions. Special attentionis given to durability to avoid handling damagewhile in transport and/or running into the hole.Having met these requirements the design is thenrefined utilizing computer aided finite elementanalyses (FEA) to optimize the connector geometryregarding both static and cyclic fatigue-typeloadings.

Connector capacities are based on the maximumshear stress theory of failure. This theory, ingeneralized form, states that a material subjected toany combination of loads will fail (by yielding orfracturing) whenever the maximum shear stressexceeds the shear strength (yield or ultimate) of thematerial. DRIL-QUIP connector ratings are based onthe following conservative design criteria:

1) The maximum membrane stress intensityshould not exceed 2/3 of the material yieldstrength, and

2) The maximum membrane plus bendingstress intensity should not exceed thematerial yield strength.

Stress intensity at a point is defined as twice themaximum shear stress at that point and is themaximum algebraic difference between the three (3)principal stresses at the point. Membrane stressintensity is the stress intensity based on averageprincipal stresses for the particular section.Membrane plus bending stress intensities at theinside and outside of a section are simply the stressintensities at these respective locations, but referredto as membrane plus bending stress intensities since

both the section resultant force and locally inducedbending contribute to the stress.

All specialty connectors are designed to be field-compatible with the casing weight and grade towhich they are attached.

Prototypes of each DRIL-QUIP specialty connec-tor type undergo extensive function and loadtesting. This testing verifies design, structuraland operational specifications.

Functional Testing

Repeated functional tests under simulatedworst-case field conditions are conducted to:

1) Verify connector operational characteris-tics meet or exceed the design criteria

2) Verify repeatability and accuracy of con-nector stab, make-up and release

3) Verify connector ruggedness for han-dling

4) Drive testing performed where applicable

5) Monitor any unusual wear

Load Testing

Tensile, bending and pressure testing are per-formed to:

1) Verify finite element analyses

2) Monitor connector performance undertensile, bending and combined tensileand bending loading conditions

3) Establish rated and ultimate capacitiesbased on test data

4) Verify connector pressure ratings andseal performance
