  • The host team of this years ConnieMack World Series is not only new tothe series. Farmingtons 4-CornersClubsox are also a new team thatsonly in its second year of existence.

By beating Strike Zone Morrissey8-0 in the city tournament semifi-nals, the Clubsox snapped StrikeZones five-year run as hosts ofConnie Mack. The Clubsox thenwent on to down the Bayfield 14ers10-3 in the finals.

Since clinching the Connie Mackberth on July 11, head coach BrettAlexander said he has given his play-ers a fair share of rest, mixed withtwice-a-day practices.

We took three days to rest rightafter we won, then we got together forone early morning and one late after-noon practice per day, saidAlexander, who is also the Aztec HighSchool baseball coach.

Since the end of the city tourna-

ment, five new players have beenadded to the Clubsox roster.

Three current Piedra Vista HighSchool players shortstop KyleDeWees, catcher Andrew Caliendoand third baseman Logan Klunder have joined the team. Also playing forthe Clubsox are two pitchers, NewMexico State University commit JoeStanley and Tanner West, a senior at

    Volcano Vista High School inAlbuquerque.

Alexander admits nerves will playa role for his team, but he believes hisroster, which includes several playerswith Connie Mack experience, willhelp calm those jitters.

Zach Ahlgrim and Kody Russellwere picked up by Strike Zone lastyear, and weve had a few other guyswho played in college regionals thisyear, he said. The advantage I thinkwe have over any other team is thatwe have kids who have grown uparound this, kids who have been in thestands before.

And Alexander isnt new to theseries himself.

Me personally, Ive had the luxuryof playing in it and have surroundedmyself with a coaching staff thatsbeen a part of it as coaches and play-ers, he said. So they know what itsall about.

The Bayside Yankees are backin Farmington for the ConnieMack World Series after missingthe last two tournaments.

To get the berth, the Yankees, out of New York City, won theAmerican qualifier with an 8-5win over the Florida Legends.

Were really excited aboutbeing back in the Connie MackWorld Series, said Yankees coachMarc Cuseta. We were able toget through a really tough quali-fying tournament and beat a real-ly good Florida Legends team inthe finals 8-5. Were looking for-ward to getting back toFarmington.

Unlike in 2012, when Cusetabrought a young team hedescribed as overachievers to thetournament, this Yankees team isolder and more mature, with ahandful of players who have col-lege experience.

We have four players whofinished up their freshman year ofcollege this year, and they bring

good maturity to the team,Cuseta said. We have good col-lege arms. Three of the four col-lege players we have are pitchers.Theyve had success at that level, and they know what it takes to goup against a high level of compe-tition.

While pitching played a bigrole for Bayside during theAmerican qualifier, games duringConnie Mack are spread outmore, allowing pitchers extratime for rest between games.Thats why Cuseta elected to pickup extra bats, as opposed to arms, for the trip to Farmington.

After the qualifier, we wereable to pick up some really goodposition players from the otherteams that will give us some goodoffensive production, he said.

Bayside won the Americanqualifier nearly a month beforeConnie Mack and has stayedbusy by playing in tournamentsleading up to the trip toFarmington.

It has been 17 years since Brooklyn YouthService made the long trip to Farmington. And after an impressive recovery in theNorth Atlantic Regional, the squad is comingback to the Connie Mack World Series.

After falling in the first round of theregional to South Troy, the Brooklyn-basedteam battled its way through the losersbracket, making it back to the finals to claimthe title.

The rebound in the regional remindedhead coach Quintin Cedeno of the run anoth-er Connie Mack-bound team made in theAmerican Qualifier.

We beat the Bayside Yankees in theAmerican Qualifier during pool play, thenBayside won the rest of their games and wonthe tournament, Cedeno said. We had togo through our regional and we did (it) likeBayside. We lost our first game to South Troy, then won five games straight. Weve playedsome good baseball.

Injuries have taken their toll on the teamthis summer. Minor injuries have lingeredlonger than expected for some players,Cedeno said. But, he said, the team is alsostarting to get back key players as they comeback from injuries.

Weve been dealing with injuries thissummer, he said. Some guys have been

playing hurt, some guys are comingback from injury, so thats a goodthing. Were not 100 percent healthy, but were ready to play.

Cedeno said one of his teamsstrengths is its defense. The team haswon a lot of close, low-score gamesbecause the players dont give upextra chances to their opponents.

But the teams biggest advantageis its cohesiveness, Cedeno said.

The biggest strength that we haveis this team is a family, he said. Thekids have a great bond together. Those are the things you cant teachon the field it all comes from thekids.

D-BAT Elite punched its ticket to theConnie Mack World Series by winningthe National Qualifier in Surprise, Ariz.

The Dallas squad got through thequalifier unscathed, going 5-0 andoutscoring opponents 29-11.

Its a different group this year. Were a competitive team that gets afterit, D-BAT Elite coach Ryan Nelsonsaid. Top to bottom, were not as top-heavy talent-wise as last years team, but we have a good group.

D-BAT Elite lost three key playersfrom its roster to the MLB draft but willhave at least one advantage on many ofits opponents: six players who playedin last years series.

Catcher Matthew Bernstein, a TexasTech commit, played for the D-BATLeach team that was one win awayfrom playing for the title. Five playersfrom last years champion D-BATGallegos team are also on the roster.Pitchers Ryan Buss and Ivan Ulloa, catcher Braden Williams and outfieldersJoshua Ragan and Josh Watson willreturn to Farmington.

Were going to lean on them fortheir experience, and theyre going toknow how to play in front of the bigcrowds that are going to be there,Nelson said. Since we qualified early, weve been talking about how to stay inthe moment and not get lost in the thou-sands of people and everything thatgoes on there.

Of the 21 players on the D-BATElite roster, 15 are committed toDivision I baseball programs. Fourare headed to junior college programsand two players, who dont graduatehigh school until 2016, are uncommit-ted.

The D-BAT organization has sentone or two teams to Connie Mackover the last decade, and Nelson saidhis team is aware of the programs

history of success. They know what the expectations

are. They know the expectation is tomake it to Farmington every year. Onceyoure there, every team is so talentedthat anything can happen. You couldwin it one year, and go 0-2 the next. Ourgoal every summer is to make it toFarmington and then just see where itgoes from there.

After missing out on the tournamentlast year, the Dallas Mustangs are back tomake some noise in the Connie MackWorld Series.

The South Plains Regional champs gotextra motivation to return to Farmingtonafter pitcher Dalton Brown and third base-man Brendan Venter joined the team in thespring. Both were members of the 2014Connie Mack World Series champion D-BAT Gallegos.

Those guys have just been a monu-mental presence in our locker room, saidMustangs coach Sam Carpenter. Ourguys bought into what Dalton andBrendan were talking about very earlyon.

The Dallas-based Mustangs toppled theTexas Stix 6-2 to get to this point. But justto make it to the regional tournament, theMustangs had to fight through adversityin the state tournament.

We lost in the third round of the statetournament and had to come back andbeat a D-BAT team twice, which we did,he said. These kids dont panic or worry, they just come out and play baseball.

Carpenter described Brown and Venteras the heart and soul of his team. Heexpects a few others to also step up duringthe series, though some are a little bangedup. Nick Motley, a middle-of-the-order batfor the Mustangs, usually catches, but kneeinjuries have him playing first base. GrantReuben plays first base or right field, butdue to a leg injury, he will serve as desig-nated hitter.

Carpenter said he believes his team iswell-balanced. Along with a solid defense especially in the outfield he haspower hitters and hitters who consistentlyget on base. Hes also confident in hispitching staff.

We have some really good arms led byBrown, who pitched well for us in the tour-nament, Carpenter said. Cole Hearreanand Parker Scott have pitched well, too. Those three guys will be at the top of ourrotation.

Tony Santillan, the 2014 Connie MackWorld Series MVP, was set to play for theMustangs until the Cincinnati Reds draft-ed him as the 49th overall pick in thisyears MLB Amateur Draft.

New to this years Connie MackWorld Series will be the winner of theDon Mattingly World Series.

The 12-team tournament inSurprise, Ariz., began July 26 and wasexpected to conclude July 29. When itwraps up, the winning team will jumpon a bus to Farmington.

As of press time, the championshipgame had not been played. For a pre-view of the winning team and its ros-ter, go to daily-times.com.

While teams playing in the DonMattingly World Series are made up ofmostly 17-year-olds, there is no reasonto write off the young squad that getsthe bid into Connie Mack.

Last year's world series championD-BAT Gallegos was comprised ofmostly 17-year-olds, and a number ofyounger teams have had deep runsand won titles in past series.

Adding the Don Mattingly WorldSeries champs to the mix helps growthe competition in the Farmingtontournament, said Richard Neely, pres-ident of the American AmateurBaseball Congress, the governingbody of the Connie Mack and DonMattingly world series.

The team that makes it toFarmington will be a legitimate con-tender for the Connie Mack crown,Neely said.

After missing last year s ConnieMack World Series, the East CobbYankees are back this year, andtheyre hungry for their programsseventh world series title.

The team out of Marietta, Ga.,earned their spot in the 2015 fieldafter winning the SoutheastRegional in Atlanta.

East Cobb will bring 13 DivisionI commits to Farmington, eight ofwhom are either current or futureGeorgia Tech players.

We judge our year by whetheror not we get back to Farmingtonfor the Connie Mack World Series,so obviously we were a little disap-pointed after last year, East Cobbcoach James Beavers said. Itsalways big for our program andreally shows that you had a greatyear. Its kind of an end-of-the-yeartreat for the guys, and were excit-ed.

The team last won a world seriestitle in 2013.

Many elite programs throughoutthe country found themselvesshorthanded after the MLB draft, and the Yankees were no exception.

Catcher Tyler Stephenson went11th overall to the Cincinnati Reds. And pitcher Jonathan Hughes

elected not to play while heweighed signing with theBaltimore Orioles after being draft-ed in the second round.

Since the start of the summer,Beavers said the team lost three ofits top four pitchers. Despite that,he said, the Yankees played clean,mistake-free baseball.

We do a lot of good things. Weplayed defense pretty well, wevethrown strikes, which always helpswith wood bats, and we haventbeat ourselves and hurt ourselvesby committing errors or walkingguys, Beavers said. I think wecan run a little bit, and we put theball in play pretty well. As a team, one through nine, weve playedwell and done all the little things.Ill say that if were playing well, were fun to watch.

Catalano, who is making his fourthtrip to Farmington after three yearswith the Bill Hood Broncos, anotherteam from Mandeville. This year,Catalano is bringing three Bill Hoodplayers from last year s ConnieMack team to join the LouisianaElite Yankees roster.

Every year, you want to havesomeone who has played in thetournament once ... Catalano said.We tell them that this is the greatestamateur event that you can go to.

Catalano said his teams hard-working attitude will give it an edgeover the competition.

Chances are were not going tobe the most talented team out there, but the reason that were successfulis because we have blue-collar play-ers, he said. We play at a fast pace, and weve really gelled as a team. Its a brotherhood. Its a family.

  • The Midland Redskins are back for yetanother Connie Mack World Series, markingtheir 25th consecutive appearance in theFarmington tournament.

The Cincinnati-based team is aiming tocapture its 14th title this year, coming off aloss in last years tournament final.

The Redskins earned their way back toFarmington with an 11-0 win over theHamilton Joes in the East Central Regional.

We played solid baseball in the regional, said Redskins coach Dave Evans. Weve gottwo great catchers behind the plate who have

been working hard for us, and we have a fewguys back from last years team that shouldprovide us with some good leadership.

Midland will return five players fromlast years team, including catchersHayden Senger and Ty Duvall, who arecommitted to play at Ohios MiamiUniversity and Vanderbilt, respectively. The two catchers have been critical toMidlands success, Evans said. And theexperience of his five returning players willbe an advantage for the team.

Thats a great advantage, having guys

who have been there before and knowwhat to expect, Evans said. Their experi-ence of having been to Farmington is goingto be very helpful.

This year, Midland will be without theprograms founder and longtime managerJoe Hayden, who died in November.

Its been tough all year. In our dugout,we still have his uniform, Evans said. Itsbeen hard after all these years of him beingthere and watching every pitch and notbeing there anymore. He lovedFarmington, and we miss him a bunch.

Prairie Gravel won the North CentralQualifier in Battle Creek, Mich., to make itinto the Connie Mack World Series. And inthe programs first trip to Farmington,Prairie Gravel will try to do what no teamfrom its regional has done since 1988: winthe title.

The group weve got is good. Theyregoing to be competitive, said coach SamSorce.

The summer started well for theChicago-based team, but injuries creptup. The team lost pitchers StephenBonnain and Nelson Munoz to tornlabrums, and catcher Joey Lange is outwith a torn rotator cuff. Munoz is get-

ting a second opinion and hopes toplay.

Also, a handful of players committed toBig Ten programs had to miss the summerseason as they attended summer classes attheir schools. While University of Illinoiscommits Jack Yalowitz and Cole Bellairwill miss the teams opening game atConnie Mack, they will join their team thefollowing day.

To round out the team, Prairie Graveltried to pick up other players after win-ning its regional. Sorce said he askedabout 15 different players to join theteam but struggled to get commitments. Many had made other commitments

outside baseball, he said.Still, Sorce has confidence in the team

he is bringing to Farmington, sayingeveryone on the roster can swing the batwell and score lots of runs.

Theyve all been swinging the bat well, and our pitchers have been throwingwell, he said. Its hard for me to picksomebody because its been someone dif-ferent every time.

While the offense can light up the score-board, Sorce said pitching and defense arethe strengths of the team.

Weve got guys who are strike throw-ers, and we pick up the ball, he said. Weshould be in every game.

    SOUTHERNCALIFORNIARENEGADES

The Southern California Renegadesare back in the Connie Mack WorldSeries after failing to come out of theirregion last year.

Before that, they won the series in2012 and were runners-up to the EastCobb Yankees in 2013.

The Renegades are coming intoFarmington hot. This summer, theywon the Firecracker Classic, aCalifornia tournament with 250 teamsfrom across the country. They were alsoco-champions of the Gates Field WorldSeries in Utah before winning the WestRegion 1-0 over the Danville Hoots.

Last year, Danville won the WestFinals, despite losing to the Renegadesthree times in previous rounds of thetournament. Head coach Si Pettrowsaid his team put in a lot of extra workthis spring to make sure it didnt missConnie Mack two years in a row.

We built our team and our wholespring and summer season aroundConnie Mack, Pettrow said.Everything we do is to prepare our-selves for this, and weve been very for-tunate to have so much success leadingup to it.

The Atlanta Braves plucked a coupleof elite ball players from the Renegadesin the MLB Amateur Draft when theypicked pitcher Kolby Allard in the firstround and catcher Lucas Herbert in thesecond.

Pettrow says his team will look toplay a run-and-gun style of baseball, spearheaded by its defense. He says hisinfield features three natural short-stops, including University of Oregoncommit Travis Moniot on the left side ofthe diamond.

Riverside City College commit IzzyFuentes and CJ Broussard out of SanDiego City College are two of theteams top starting pitchers.

University of Southern Californiacommits Solomon Bates and QuentinLongrie are also key members of theRenegades rotation.

Our pitching staff is outstanding,Pettrow said. Were 13 to 15 deep withour pitchers. We have a typical, well-rounded Connie Mack team. We playgreat defense and got a ton of arms. Iwish we hit a little better, but we hitenough to win our games.
