Getting Started

.

Access to the DeVry Play Game Portal:

Direct your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) to: games.chamberlain.edu

1. Once logged in, students will be defaulted to their PLAYGROUND page. Faculty will be defaulted to

their DASHBOARD page.

2. At the top will be a section, “Games from my Classes” which displays any games you have been

enrolled in as a student. It is important that you always initiate play from this area for any game

where you would like your progress to be tracked and your grade reported.

The second section will have any games that you have selected to play just for fun. Keep in mind that

while you can access and play these games, your progress and grades will not be tracked or

reported/recorded.

3. Before playing for the first time you will need to install the Unity Web Player. Instructions for installing

this for Firefox can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykCx-GgSmtI . Instructions for

installing in Internet Explorer are similar. We do not recommend running the game on Chrome or

Safari.

4. Once installed, the Unity loading page and then the Start Screen for the game will appear:

Note: Video tutorials for getting started, navigating the portal, game levels, and using the Interactive E-Books

and other help resources can be found in the GAMES tab of your game portal. Simply look for your game and

click on the LEARN tab found just below the game icon. This is also where all IEB material and game guides

can be found.

The Lobby The first area you will enter within the game is the lobby. Here you can navigate to and between different

game levels which have been unlocked and are available to you.

As you master and complete each level, the next will unlock and become available.

Levels Overview

There are a total of 9 levels in this game. The first three levels include practice with rounding decimals,

converting pounds to kilograms (weight conversions), and solving medical conversion problems (unit

conversions).

Once players have mastered these foundational skills, they can move on to more complex calculations. In level

4 players will fill basic candy orders (Level 4 Tablets & Capsules:). This includes practice reviewing orders and

supply on hand.

Level 5 provides practice with calculating Level 5 Drops per Minute. Players are given an amount of fluid to be

infused over a specified amount of time using specific drip chamber characteristics.

Level 6 introduces students to the process for determining Level 6 Fluid Rates when given information such as

drug amount, fluid amount, amount of time over which the total fluid volume should be infused, drip chamber

calibration, etc. Players must calculate the ML/HR to be given.

In Level 7, Level 7 Complex Fluids - mcg/kg/min, players will have the opportunity to practice two skills often

needed when programming IV pumps to deliver critical medications. They will determine the dose and rate of

IV medication delivery (mcg/kg/min) as well as the total amount of medication given per dose when

administration is divided over a 24 hour period (mL per dose).

During the final round of regular game play, level 8, players must complete complex calculations first and then

determine if the amount calculated falls within a

Level 8 Safe Dose Range (SDR).

Level 9 provides two mini-games that offer practice for all medication calculation skills. This Level 9 Skill

Review can be played on a mobile device and prepares students for their pre-clinical med-calc exams as well

as the NCLEX.

Game Play

The Basics: Levels 1-3 Rounding Decimals, Weight Conversions, & Unit Conversions

1. In the Rounding Decimals level, you will be given a decimal number and asked to round it to either the

nearest Whole, Tenth, or Hundredth. Once you have determined your answer there are several ways

to submit. You can type your answer directly into the number box and hit enter to see the bottles

realign to match your answer or you can click and toss the bottles out of the way with your mouse and

move additional bottles on or off the platform and then hit enter. Either way, after hitting enter on your

keyboard be sure to click on the SUBMIT button. Also be sure to note that the decimal point, found

along the edge of the platform, can be clicked on/off or moved as needed. Have fun with it!

2. Weight Conversions provides practice in converting pounds to kilograms.

a. Click and drag a toy from the toy box onto the scale. The toy item’s weight in pounds will be displayed

on their scale.

b. Use the in-game calculator to determine the weight in kg. The calculator is docked to the right of the

screen and can be opened by clicking and dragging at the arrow. Decimals should be rounded only to

the tenths (there’s a sticky note on the computer screen to remind you!).

c. Either grab weights and move them onto the scale and use the slider to enter anything smaller than a

whole number or type your answer directly in the kg scale box and click enter.

d. Review your answer one last time and click on SUBMIT

In the following example, the toy robot weighs 67.98 lbs. Using the in-game calculator, I determined that 67.98

divided by 2.2 comes to 30.9 kg. Rounding to the tenths, my final answer is 30.9 kg. I entered that information

in the right-hand scale by dragging a 25 kg weight, a 5 kg weight, and by moving the slider on the screen up to

0.9. Once completed I pressed submit.

3. Level 3 focuses on unit conversions. In everyday medication calculation there are frequent

requirements to convert between units of measure. You will be given one value/unit and be asked to

convert it to a different unit of measure.

a. Use your mouse to angle and shoot a rubber band from the pencil at the bottom of the screen. Aim for

the right conversion ratio, which will be one of the targets displayed on top. The machine will do the

calculations for you and display the results in the middle of the screen.

b. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth. This can be done by shooting any trailing numbers to

knock them off as well as increasing or decreasing the number in the hundredth spot by hitting the up

or down arrows with another rubber band. Add decimal points where needed by shooting the rubber

band at the red LCD lights below the numbers. When you submit your answer, the bucket will fill with

the amount of fluid shown and you can see if you were too high, too low, or spot on.

Level 4 Tablets & Capsules:

1. A medication (candy) order will slide in on the wire located above the dispensing machine.

2. To fill the order you must properly calculate the amount needed based on the supply provided. This is

done using our in-game calculator found docked on the right margin of the screen, or the Dimensional

Analysis (DA) Framework, an in game calculation and conversion tool explained further in this guide.

3. Once you have determined the proper amount of candy to dispense you must select the most

appropriate of the available candy supply bags and drag/drop it into the CANDY receptacle. This will

make the DISPENSE button turn green.

4. After dragging and dropping the candy bag into the receptacle bin, enter the number of pieces from that

bag needed to fill the order and click the DISPENSE button.

5. Your selection will drop down onto the tray. Sometimes, candy tablets may need to be divided. You

can do this using the cutter on the right hand side of the dispensing machine. Sugar capsules, much

like medication capsules, should never be cut. If you accidentally cut a sugar capsule it will spill out

and won’t fill the order.

Receive bonus points for filling the order with the fewest possible pieces of candy and disposing of all

waste in the waste bin!

Level 5 Drops per Minute

Often nurses will be able to automatically determine the appropriate rate at which intravenous fluids should be

given by using an I.V. pump. There are times when it is necessary to calculate this by hand, either because a

pump is not available or because the patient population requires it (i.e. pediatric drip chamber). This is also

commonly referred to as the drip factor. Rather than determining the milliliters to be given over a period of time,

you are actually determining exactly how many drops of fluid will enter the IV tubing over each 60 second

period.

In this level you will use the in-game calculator and we will also introduce you to the dimensional analysis (DA)

framework. The goal of the Drops per Minute level is to propel a toy boat across a tub of water. In order to do

so you must provide just the right amount of hydro-power at just the right speed.

1. First the order will appear in the center of the screen. You will be given the amount of fluid, in milliliters,

as well as the amount of time and drip chamber specifications needed to accurately propel your boat.

2. The DA framework is docked on the left hand side of your screen. Click on the small arrow with your

mouse and move it over. Find a nice spot to place it like the middle of your boat. You can easily return it

to its docking station after using it.

3. Input the given information into your DA framework tool by dragging or typing it in (see the

Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework section of this guide for more information on how to use the

tool). This is the most important step - setting your problem up correctly.

4. When you feel confident the calculation has been completed successfully, click on the SEND button

found in the bottom right section of the DA Framework. This will send your answer to the input box

below the clock.

5. If you would like to see what this drip rate looks like, you can view the drip chamber below the hanging

IV bag. This rate is accurate. You can also start and stop the clock by clicking on the red button on top

of it and adjust the flow of the fluid by clicking and rolling the roller clamp up and down (after you have

submitted your final answer!). This is not a requirement of the game but can add to the learning.

6. Move the Dimensional Analysis Framework out of the way so that you can see the IV pole and the tub.

7. Click and drag the IV fluid bag from the IV pole to the smaller pole found next to the boat. When you

drop the bag on the new pole, the boat will move. It will travel safely to the other side if the calculation is

right, fly out of the tub if the rate is too fast, and sink if the rate is too slow.

Level 6 Fluid Rates

Next up, you must provide a withering plant with exactly the right amount of water to keep it healthy. Too much

or too little water will cause the plant to wilt however if you get it right you’ll get it to bloom. You’ll definitely

want to grab the DA Framework Tool from the left docking station for this one!

In this level there are three different kinds of drop rate problems. Using the information given you are asked to

calculate the milliliters per hour the plant will receive.

1. First let’s complete the calculation. Open up your DA Framework Tool. Click and drag it into the room

from the left hand side of your screen. The easiest place to put it is just below the MENU in the top

right corner. This keeps it tidy and out of the way.

2. Drag over the needed information from the problem to the DA Framework. This is the most important

step. If you don’t set up the problem correctly your answer won’t be right. Take your time.

3. Once the information has been populated in the Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework you can

send the calculated answer, found in the red box, to the answer box by clicking the SEND button.

These will automatically be rounded to whole numbers. You can also type your answer directly into the

box below the plant.

4. Alternatively, you can have more fun by selecting the right volume of fluid balloons and throwing them

up against the wall or dropping them into the water trough against the right wall. The water will drain

into the system and be syphoned directly to the plant!

5. Once the answer has been entered into the answer box by either throwing balloons, using the SEND

button on the DA framework, or typing it in directly, hit the Submit button and watch your plant bloom!

Level 7 Complex Fluids - mcg/kg/min

The Complex Fluids level puts you in control of the hospital recreation room where patients are trying to watch

a movie. Unfortunately due to some electrical issues the generator must utilize hydropower. A syringe pump

system has been set up to run the projector and as long as you keep the right amount of fluids in the system

your patients will be able to enjoy the movie!

Two things can shut the system down: the wrong amount of fluid in the system or the fluid moving at the wrong

rate of speed. You’ll need to be on top of both of these problems.

To accomplish this you will need to calculate one of two types of IV calculation problems which will appear

randomly.

In the first type of problem you must fix the projector when it starts pumping at the wrong rate. You will know

this is happening when you are given an Infusion Rate problem. This type of problem asks you to determine

the amount of medication being given per kilogram per minute (mcg/kg/min). You will be given the patient’s

weight in kilograms, an amount of medication to be infused in a specific amount of solution, a drip rate in drops

per minute (gtts/min) and the tubing specifications in drops per milliliter (gtts/ml). It is a LOT of information to

consider. Pay special attention to what is being asked of you - this is always the final sentence in the

problem. In this case it will be mcg/kg/min.

1. If the patient’s weight is given to you in pounds you must first convert this to kilograms.

2. If the medication dosage is given in anything other than micrograms (mcg) you will want to calculate the

conversion to mcg. The Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework is helpful with this.

3. Use the Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework to drag over the available data, being sure to align the

information in such a way that all units are cancelled out except those you will use in the final answer

(mcg/kg/min).

4. Do not round any calculations until you complete the final step of the problem and then round the final

answer to the hundredths.

5. You can SEND your final answer to the keyboard using the SEND button found in the bottom right of

the DA framework or type/Input the final answer into the typewriter box using your keyboard or the keys

on the in-game typewriter. Remember to round to the hundredths and include a leading zero when

necessary.

In the example above, you will need to determine how many micrograms per kilogram per minute will be given

(mcg/kg/min). Like the level says - complex fluids!!! The patient weighs 20 kg and has an order for 300 mcg of

medication to be infused in 98 ML of IV solution. The drop rate is 25 gtts/min with tubing delivering 60 gtts/ML.

You are asked to find how many mcg/kg/min the patient will receive.

The Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework is dragged over and, starting with the amount in mcg, the

available information is placed inside the framework to determine the answer. If the amount of medication were

given in grams or milligrams instead of micrograms or the weight were provided in pounds instead of

kilograms, additional fields in the framework would need to be populated to complete the necessary

calculations and provide mcg/kg/min.

All units are correctly cancelled out through the dimensional analysis problem solving process. Across the top

the framework automatically multiplies 300 x 1 x 25 (7500) and divides that total by the product of the numbers

in the numerators: 98 x 60 x 1 x 20 (117,600). The result found in the red box is 0.06377551 mcg/kg/min. You

must round this answer to the hundredths.

Level 7 Complex Fluids - ML/dose

In the second type of problem the syringe runs out of fluid and must be replenished. You will know this is

happening when you are given a Divided Dose problem. This problem asks you to calculate the amount of

fluid which will be given per dose (ML/dose).

1. First, move over your DA framework tool. Drag over the order (mg/kg/day) into the framework such that

the mg amount is on top and the kg/day is on the bottom.

2. Drag over the remaining information provided in the problem into the framework tool, making sure to

cancel out in such a way that all you have remaining is the ml/day

3. Review the frequency and, using the framework, divide the final answer by the number of doses

ordered in a 24 hour period (i.e. BID = divide by 2, Q4h = divide by 6, etc.)

4. Round the final answer, located in the bottom DA framework box, to the hundredths.

5. Now it is time to replenish the syringe. Select the proper syringe from the dropdown box at the top of

the screen based on the amount of fluid you will be giving.

6. Drag the syringe to insert it into the yellow cap on the end of the fluid bag, lying on top of the

machine.

7. Use your mouse to drag the gray box/arrow above the syringe over to the point where the exact

amount of fluid has been pulled into the syringe.

8. Drag the syringe to the holder located between the typewriter and the problem box.

9. Your solution is submitted automatically. You do not need to type anything into the input box on the

typewriter.

History has shown us that Level 7 is the most challenging of all game levels. Be prepared to

spend some time here but know that this practice will be invaluable to you! And don’t forget

that if you are unsure about how to play, we have a video tutorial available. Just click on your

GAMES tab in the portal, find the Conquering Calculations game, and click on the LEARN button

below it. Good luck, be patient, and have fun!

Level 8 Safe Dose Range (SDR)

In this level players must review medication orders that have been filled and determine if the amount

dispensed is within the safe dosage range.

When the level opens an order appears at the top of the screen along with a medication bottle suspended by

purple string. Also present are two bins, a left red bin marked UNSAFE and a right green bin marked SAFE.

1. First you must complete your calculation. You are given the amount of medication ordered, the weight

of the patient, how frequently the medication will be given, and the safe dosage range (SDR) per 24

hours.

2. Use the Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework, docked at the left hand side of your screen, to

determine the low end of the safe dosage range. You must record this number on the clipboard by

clicking on the SEND button at bottom right of the DA Framework.

3. Use the Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework, docked at the left hand side of your screen, to

determine the high end of the safe dosage range. You must record this number on the clipboard by

clicking on the SEND button at bottom right of the DA Framework.

4. You now have on your clipboard the low and high end values of the safe dosage range. Steps 2 & 3

are required to successfully solve the problem.

5. Remember to complete all of the necessary calculations to determine the TOTAL amount you would be

administering in a 24 hour period. This will mean paying special attention to the frequency stated in the

problem and calculating as needed to arrive at a 24 hour total amount.

6. If the amount to be given within 24 hours falls between the low and high ends of the SDA it is SAFE.

Cut the LEFT purple strand with your mouse so that the medication bottle swings over into the SAFE

bucket.

7. If the amount to be given within 24 hours does not fall between the low and high ends of the SDA is

UNSAFE. Cut the RIGHT purple strand so that the medication bottle swings over into the UNSAFE

bucket.

Level 9 Skill Review

After players have Conquered all regular game-play in levels 1-8, two mini games are available which provide

practice questions similar to those they will encounter in their medication calculation exams for clinical courses

as well as on their future NCLEX. A mobile option is also available for practice on the go.

Two Mini-Games are available: Rapid Fire Questions & Practice Exam Questions. The Rapid Fire Question

Mini-Game must be completed as part of your NR224 Grade Requirement

● The Skill Review games will be available on IOS devices soon. This information will be provided to

faculty to share with students.

1. The Rapid Fire Game provides challenging, fast paced practice through ten rounds of play that are

timed. The amount of time given to complete the problems decreases as players advance to higher

rounds.

Questions appear in the center of the screen. Possible answers are displayed below. The calculations used to

arrive at each answer will display when each answer choice is clicked. This allows the player to consider all

steps of the dimensional analysis problem in order to be sure that the answer is correct. Choose the right

answer by clicking on it and then clicking the submit button. If no answer is selected before the available time

runs out or if the answer selected is incorrect, a red X will be placed in one of the three boxes in the top left

hand corner. Once an X has been placed in all three boxes, the game must be started over.

2. The Practice Exam Questions are required for the course. In this game players are given questions

which resemble what they will see on medication calculation exams as well as the NCLEX. You must

master this level with at least 19/20 questions correct for credit.

You can click on the DA icon in the top left of the screen to open and use the DA Framework tool within the

game.

Once opened, you can enter numbers into the tool by clicking on the box and typing on your keyboard. Mobile

users can click on the box and a number pad will appear for entry.

Remember the final answer determined by your calculations. This number will be typed into the answer box

before hitting the SUBMIT button. The correct answer and calculations will be displayed at the end of each

question for further review:

After the player has answered 20 questions they will get a score screen (example below)

Dimensional Analysis (DA) Framework

Dimensional Analysis (DA) is the official method used to calculate medication for the purposes of

administration at Chamberlain College of nursing. With DA, the problem can be set up in such a way that you

can eliminate extra information and calculate a very specific answer as requested. Please review the

Preceptor Help, Interactive E-Book Lessons, & Tutorial Screens found within the game and within the

game portal, for more information on Dimensional Analysis.

Inside the game, each level includes a built-in DA framework (see figures below) which allows you to click and

drag or type and enter information directly into the numerator or denominator spaces while the answer is

automatically calculated for you. This gives you the opportunity to practice setting up your dimensional

analysis problems correctly and eliminates the need for a separate calculator. In each level you can use the

DA framework by simply clicking and dragging it over from the left hand side where it is docked.

There are many ways that you can interact with the DA framework:

1. You can drag items over from the order to the open box in the framework using your mouse. Once

moved over you can rearrange or move the information between existing boxes or create new boxes.

2. You can type in the box outlined in brown and drag that to an open space in the framework or drag to a

new space and create a box.

3. A new addition to the DA Framework tool allows you to select from several pre-populated, commonly

used options and drag them into the tool. Found just below the brown type-in box of the tool, this

option offers you the ability to scroll to the right and left to choose between the values 60 min, 2.2, and

1000.

4. The current calculated answer will show up in the red DA box and will automatically change as you add,

edit, or delete information in the framework boxes.

5. In some levels, you can automatically send your final answer to an input field by clicking on the SEND

button in the framework.

6. There are several ways you can remove content from an individual box. You can type new information

in the brown box at the bottom of the framework and drag it into a box. This will replace the previous

content with the new information you have entered. You can click on a box and drag it off of the

framework, making it disappear completely. You can drag information over from an order or from the in-

game calculator directly into a box, replacing any content that was there previously.

7. Whenever you would like to completely delete all content in the DA framework and start over, simply

click on the RESET button at the top right of the framework.

Preceptor Help, Interactive E-Book Lessons, & Tutorial Screens

During gameplay whenever a player is having difficulty with a particular type of calculation, the preceptor will

appear and suggest that they consult the game’s Interactive E-Book (IEB). From within the game itself,

players can click a link and they will be taken to the section in the IEB which corresponds to the specific

content needed for that particular game level. When ready, players can re-enter the game where they left off

by simply closing the IEB pop up window and resuming game play.

Players can access the entire IEB at any time by clicking on the Menu, then Help, then IEB. In this instance

the player will also be taken to the IEB content most directly linked to the level they are currently playing.

Want to read the entire IEB outside of game play? Simply go to the GAMES tab in the game portal, find your

game, and click the LEARN button below the game icon. All IEB lessons are available to review at any time.

Tutorial screens offer a quick snapshot with reminder text to help with game play instructions. You can access

the tutorial help screens by clicking on your game menu found in the top right of the game and scrolling down

to the Help tab. There you will see the IEB option as well as the TUTORIAL option. Clicking on the tutorial

option will place a layer of descriptive text over the game play area. Remove this text when ready by clicking

on the tutorial option button again.

Game Profiles, Leaderboards, & Badges The user profile created in the game portal will carry over into the Conquering Calculations game. This

includes the player name and photo.

Instructions for editing your portal profile are included in the Getting Started Video tutorial found by going to the

GAMES tab and clicking on the LEARN button below the Conquering Calculations game icon.

In the top right corner of the game portal players can click on the drop down menu below their name and select

Profile.

Clicking on PROFILE will open the dialog box below where players can edit and update their information,

including the upload of a photo from their computer.

While playing the game, the imported profile can be accessed by clicking the drop down arrow just below the

player’s picture and name in the top left corner of the screen:

From this screen players can determine their current score and rank in each level of the game. Click on the

scroll arrows to the left and right of “Badges” or drag the scroll bar at the bottom of the screen to access

additional available badges and player status. A faded level title indicates one which has not yet been started.

When levels are begun the text here will be in full color. When levels are mastered a green star will be found

in the square next to the level name and mastery text will be displayed (see below)

Please note: The Skill Review Level is not included as part of the game profile currently.

Leaderboards can also be found inside of the game portal. Click on the title of the game within the GAMES

page:

You can review your scores on individual levels under the ‘My Score’ tab or click on the GLOBAL tab and see

the ranked scores of all players:
