Listed buildings
• Buildings of ‘special architectural or historic interest.’
• Approximately 1100 listed buildings.

Listed buildings
• Listed Building Consent is needed
for any ‘works of alterations, demolition or extension that is deemed to affect the special architectural or historic interest of the building’.
Conservation areas
• An area of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.
• 31 conservation areas in Bassetlaw.
Conservation areas appraisals
• Researched and written by the department.
• Tell us what is significant about the area.
• Are used to support planning policy and inform decision making.
Article 4 directions
• These remove Permitted Development (PD) rights from residential properties.
• Allows the local planning
authority to manage alterations to properties that could be harmful to the character and appearance of the area.
• Only 1 conservation area is covered by an Article 4 direction.
Grants
• The District Council, solely or in partnership with other bodies can provide grants for the preservation of the historic environment.

• Work to assist and support any individual or body
applying for grant funding from other organisations e.g. the HLF.
Buildings at risk grant
• Small grants up to £5000 to assist owners in carrying out repairs to buildings identified as being ‘at risk’.
• Grant money can be to assist in part of a restoration or to prevent the situation from getting worse.
Conservation areas at risk grant
• Tuxford was identified as a conservation area at risk by English Heritage in 2009.
• Grant scheme in partnership with English Heritage and Nottinghamshire County Council.

Non-designated heritage assets.
• Also referred to as ‘local listings’.
• They should comply with the Council’s adopted criteria for identification.
• These are buildings and structures that are not nationally listed or fall within a conservation area but are of local interest where their heritage value is worthy of greater attention in planning decisions.

Supplementary planning documents (SPD).
• These are documents that supplement the Council’s local planning polices and used in decision making.
• Currently seeking to adopt a new SPD to ensure better shop front design and signage.
