CONSIDER THE IMPORTANCE OF TECHNOLOGICAL
CONVERGENCE FOR INSTITUTIONS AND AUDIENCES
Alivia Osborn12RA
WHAT THE QUESTION MEANS
Consider the Importance of Technological Convergence for Institutions and AudiencesConvergent Technology:
“The technology that allows an audience to consume more than one type of media from a single platform.”Basic terms:
Merging two types of media into ONE thingExample: XBOX One- Gaming system, music sound system and DVD player all in one form of media.
INSTITUTIONSPRODUCTION
CAMERAS- Easily transferable now from being mounted
to a dolly to a shoulder cam. EXAMPLE: Arri Alexa Arriflex 416 (Used in
’71) - Also compatible with the lenses of the other
Arriflex cameras soyou a company wouldn’thave to buy other lensesto create the same cinematic effect from a much heavier cameraby Arri Alexa
INSTITUTIONS- PRODUCTION
CAMERA DEVELOPMENT- The accessibility of equipment allows
anyone to create a film on any type of budget. EXAMPLE:Tangerine (2015)
Filmed all on an iPhone 5s using MoonDog Labs Anamorphic Adapter (which is a lens specially made for filming on an iphone)
PRODUCTION-CGI- THE PROGRESSION Depending on your budget, you can still create
a good film through CGI
INDEPENDENT COMPANY EXAMPLE:Attack the Block (2011) Designed by Spectral Motion to create
costumes for their monsters in their film. (Enhancement by Digital Negative~ computer programme by Adobe that’s easily accessible to the public)
CGI- THE PROGRESSIONMULTI-NATIONAL COMPANY EXAMPLE:Paul (2011) Used the company X-Sens to create Paul
(the leading global supplier of 3D Motion Tracking Products)
They know they will have high quality filming due to the fact that X-Sens is the top company for CGI
Converging the use of CGI with movements from the cast allows the CGI to look more realistic

DISTRIBUTION- DVDS now include extras such
as Director’s cut and footage showing the making of the film all in special features.
Can also include exclusive trailers too.
EXAMPLE:The Hobbit (2012) (Peter Jackson) Extended Edition of the film
with 13minutes of additional footage added back into the film
Making of the film Documentaries about the film
DISTRIBUTION Downloading the films at home is now
very easy due to companies such as Amazon Prime and iTunes.
Streaming services are available such as LoveFilm, NowTV and Netflix for access to films for a monthly cost.
Promotion can be done through the internet- websites and social media. EXAMPLE: ’71 (2014)Facebook page was created to promote the film- costs the institutions nothing to do this.
DISTRIBUTION (MARKETING)
EXHIBITION The use being able to release films at the same
time allows the institutions to release their films in multiple countries at the same time
IMAX theatres allows the audience to experience a surround sound experience. The introduction of 3D films also adds to the experience
The use of apps that give the audiences deals on the cinema also brings in an audience who want to immerse themselves in the experience of cinema. This makes it more of an event rather than just watching a film.
iPhones, Tablets, Kindles, etc. make it very easy to download films and to watch films and trailers anywhere you go.
