Introduction & AcknowledgementsSince 1995, the Tarble Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University and Consolidated Communications have partnered to present Cultivating Creativity: Consolidated Communications Children’s Art Exhibition. This year’s exhibition includes 44 works of art created by children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade from schools throughout east central Illinois, drawn from the annual Children’s Art Exhibition held each May at the Tarble. Attendance records provided by the host sites estimate that over 10,000 individuals view the exhibit each year as it travels throughout the region. Cultivating Creativity celebrates the many quality art programs in area schools led by certified art specialists and applauds the school districts whose administrators and boards of education recognize that arts education is core to every child’s academic development and success. Earlier this year, the National Art Education Association published a series of studies, titled ArtsEdSearch1, addressing the benefits of arts education for students of all ages. In an academic setting, research demonstrates a positive relationship between studying the arts and literacy and language development. Research also showed that the effects of arts integration on student achievement are not sudden, but gradual and that students benefit from sustained access to arts integrated instruction. Studies at the elementary level detect connections between arts participation and overall academic achievement, including larger increases in intelligence (IQ). Middle and high school students with a high engagement in the arts are more likely to perform well on standardized achievement tests and attain high grades, and are less likely to drop out of school. Arts Education is critical to the development of a strong sense of identity, positive self-concept, emotional well-being, motivation to succeed, and engagement and persistence in learning, life, and work.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Consolidated Communications for their continued support of this program. Through this twenty-plus year partnership, audiences throughout the area have had the opportunity to view and delight in the myriad ways that children’s art makes our world a bit brighter. Many thanks to the numerous venues that host this exhibition each year; and which help the Tarble connect with our diverse surrounding communities. Much appreciation goes to the participating schools and their administrations for recognizing the positive impact that arts education has upon their children and their communities. Finally, this exhibition would not be possible without the creative energies and talents of the young artists featured within Cultivating Creativity and the art specialists who guide their imaginations.

Eastern Illinois University
“The arts can actually make kids better students and we lose sight of that fact when
we eliminate these kinds of opportunities. Because this is the stuff that hooks kids
in and the evidence is crystal clear. Kids who get involved in the arts have higher
grades, they have higher graduation rates, they have higher college enrollment rates.
Arts education isn’t just a luxury that we add on after we’ve achieved other priorities
like raising test scores and getting kids into college. We say this every time we do
an event: these are not luxuries, they are absolute necessities. It’s actually critical to
achieving these initial properties in the first place.”
-Michelle Obama, excerpt from speech honoring the 2015 class of the National Student Poets Program
“We say arts education is good for general education, but that’s not the point. The
arts are what great nations are remembered for. They are a mirror.”
-Damian Woetzel, Ballet dancer
“Once I started, I grew to love it. It came so naturally to me and I think I was craving an
artistic outlet.”
-Misty Copeland, Ballerina
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
–Pablo Picasso, Artist
“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has ever known.”
-Oscar Wilde, Playwright
“Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal to
ourselves and to others the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there
is no vision, the people perish.”
–Lyndon B. Johnson, on signing into existence the National Endowment on the Arts
“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”
–Albert Einstein, Theoretical Physicist
“Art is fundamental, unique to each of us...Even in difficult economic times —
especially in difficult economic times—the arts are essential.”
– Maria Shriver, former First Lady of California, Journalist and Author
