The company has been carbon neutral since 2016, offsetting all CO2 emissions generated which it could not reduce.

ACCIONA Construction channels all its innovation activities through its Technology Centre in Madrid, which specializes in sustainable construction. Its multidisciplinary team of more than 100 people make it an inexhaustible source of

creativity. The ACCIONA Construction Technology Centre covers over 3,500 m2, with 14 fully equipped laboratories and two production shops for manufacturing prototypes. Its research lines are divided into four main areas: Materials, Infrastructure, Energy Efficiency and New Construction Technologies.

To conduct its research, ACCIONA Construction works with the best universities and technology centres around the world. In Europe, it has participated in over 100 R&D projects supported by the European Commission through the FP7 framework programme (2007-2013) and its successor, the H2020 programme (2014-2020).

Its commitment to innovation has enabled ACCIONA Construction to develop its own technology solutions, different from those of other companies in the sector. To do so, ACCIONA uses a Master Plan to implement its sustainability strategy.

The 2020 Sustainability Master Plan integrates and structures all of the initiatives related to this area in the Company. It has a cross-company approach, setting

objectives in the areas of Climate Change, Environment, Society, People, Good Governance, Value Chain and Innovation. Each business area shares strategic and operational objectives with the entire organization, adapted to their own specifications. The goal is to incorporate the principle of sustainability into the nature of each activity.

In short, ACCIONA’s Sustainability Master Plan is directly linked to the company’s vision and mission, in line with its strategic business priorities.

The Highways, Bridges and Special Structures Unit has integrated its experience, spanning nearly a century, into all of its specialized technical and human resources. Its goal is to offer specific technical solutions for each Project and Client, anywhere in the world, participating in every project phase: offer, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructures (highways, bridges, airports and special structures).

From its beginnings in the early 20th

century, ACCIONA Construction has helped to develop a vast network of highways in Spain. It began expanding internationally in 1972 and the Highways, Bridges and Special Structures Unit is currently present in the most relevant international projects in Australia, New Zealand, Panama, Denmark, Brazil and Canada, among others.

ACCIONA Construction has become a global leader in the design and construction of all types of communication routes, bridges and viaducts thanks to its advances in engineering, the use of the most modern construction techniques, respect for the environment, and its desire to contribute to the development of the communities in which it operates.

The Railways and Tunnels Unit covers all stages of the process, from feasibility studies and design, through to construction, works supervision and maintenance.

It offers innovative solutions and advanced materials adapted to each project, applying the principle of

sustainability in all construction processes. It has its own technology for laying ballastless track on high-speed train and tram lines.

ACCIONA Construction’s rail activities in the past 25 years include high-speed, conventional rail, metros and trams in Australia, Brazil,

Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Norway, Germany, Italy and Spain (currently the second longest high-speed network in the world, with 3,000 km in service).

ACCIONA Construction’s Ports and Hydraulic Works Unit undertakes any type of design and construction project for ports, dry docks, shipyards, piers, marinas, dams, hydroelectric power plants, navigation and irrigation channels, conduits and collectors. Its international reputation is based

on the experience obtained from more than a century conducting complex works, and on its ability to include new materials and new construction techniques.

ACCIONA Construction has taken part in building some of the most significant dams in Europe, Africa

and South America, and it is currently Involved in constructing one of the largest water projects in North America – the Site C dam in Canada.
