Class of 2015
Construction Moves Forward On Rothsay School Building
Cabinets have been assembled and hung in the elementary classrooms located on the second floor of the new Rothsay school building. Ceiling grids have been set in place just waiting for tiles to be put in place when the time is right. Construction will be mostly finished so that the construction dust is settled prior to placing tiles in the ceiling grids.
Floor tiles have been installed in this classroom except for one corner. When all complete 450 thousand pounds of tile will grace the floors of the two story Rothsay school building.
Workmen from subcontractors Fergus Drywall, Inc. are moving a sheet of drywall across what will become the central hall into the kitchen in the new school building. Through the doorway large cylinders can be seen that will be used as duct work running across ceilings. This area will be one of the last completed as it is a central unloading zone.
Workmen place glass just so in the frame. Two windows are to the side of each door entering classrooms in the new Rothsay school.
continues to meet. Any recommendations from that committee will be placed on the agenda when the school board meets Monday, April 13.
There are three or four options as to the future use of the old structure. “We are gathering information on the demolition of the building,” said Schmidt. “We need to consider the cost of removing the asbestos. One option would be to leave the building along.”
A second option is to demolish the entire building. The other two
options include leaving the gym, science room, foyer and elementary wing in place, taking down the rest of the structure. A fourth option would be to demolish the elementary wing and the old section of the facility only.
All of this is still in the discussion stage and no decisions have been made at this time.
It appears that the construction is going well as are the planning sessions needed to ensure the building layout and other amenities are well thought out. Every detail is being looked at in relation to the total building. Good planning should ensure each area of study meshes together for a quality school facility.
The $19.4 million referendum approving the construction of a new Rothsay school building was passed in May 2013.
Construction on the project began after ground breaking was held in May 2014.
The ongoing construction project is the result of years of planning after it was determined a new facility would be the most viable option to meet the school district’s growing enrollment.
The July completion day of the project gives the district time to get furniture and equipment moved and set in place to welcome students back to classes on September 8, 2015.
The public can keep track of the building progress by accessing a live webcam available through the school’s website at http://www.rothsay.k12.mn.us. The link allows anyone with internet connection to keep an eye on the progress of the building project.
