SEIKATSU KOGEI OBJECTS FOR INTENTIONAL LIVING

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Seikatsu Kogei: Objects for Intentional Living explores the Japanese craft movement that began in the 1990s known as Seikatsu Kogei, or lifestyle crafts. See how the works of Seikatsu Kogei artists re-examine our relationship to the objects in our lives, presented together in Australia for the first time.

Included in this exhibition are some 50 works by 22 currently-active Seikatsu Kogei artists. The objects on display are made from a variety of materials, including wood, ceramics, lacquer, glass, metal, bamboo, paper and clay.

FUROSHIKI (風呂敷)

Furoshiki is a traditional way of wrapping and transporting items using a piece of cloth – both gift wrap and gift bag, attractive and practical. The furoshiki cloth is usually square, though sometimes slightly rectangular if pieces are repurposed from old kimono, and can be improvised from any type of cloth of any size, as long as it is a few times larger than the wrapped object.

Different tying methods plus easy adjustment equals myriad of tying and packaging possibilities, the knots are easily undone to revert the furoshiki back into a flat piece of material, ready to be used, again and again. The versatility of furoshiki means accommodating anything from glass bottles to squat round watermelons!

Best of all, the furoshiki is just a piece of cloth that can be easily washed and disinfected after each use as needed – try this eco-method out yourself to transport some groceries on your next essential goods run!

Visit these links to see how many things you can wrap!
