SKIEsAND RD&T MICRONCLEAN’S GUIDING PRINCIPLES
THE FOUR PRINCIPLES OF STEWARDSHIP, KNOWLEDGE, INNOVATION AND EXCELLENCE ARE THE MICRONCLEAN SKIES.
S T E W A R D S H I P / K N O W L E D G E / I N N O VAT I O N / E X C E L L E N C E
They provide a compass for our strategic direction, help inform the multitude of day-to-day
business decisions and keep our customers firmly at the centre of everything we do.
STEWARDSHIP Micronclean has been owned and managed
by the Fry family since Cedric Fry acquired
the original laundry in 1928, although it had
been in existence for many years prior to
that. Donovan Fry took over when his father
Cedric died in 1968, and he in turn handed
over the reins when he retired in 1993 to
his son Simon Fry who is the current family
member in charge of the business.
Ownership by one family for so long
stamps an identity that separates the
company from other businesses. For
Micronclean this, is a long-term focus
to create world beating technology,
systems, products and services. These are
supported by the honesty and integrity of
our workforce all backed by a consistent
financial investment .
KNOWLEDGE Knowledge is the foundation of
Micronclean’s ability to serve its customers
with Excellence and Innovation.
To support our strategic ambition we must
improve our processes by consistently
investing in both technology and our
people so that one equally supports the
other. In addition, we must understand our
customers as well we understand our
technologies so that we not only see
opportunities but we also a bring them to
market.
This strategic ambition is transforming the
organisation so that not only has it retained
its position as a market leading supplier of
cleanroom garments and laundry services
but it has actively developed its position as
a market leading provider of contamination
control products and services and has
become a medical device manufacturer.
INNOVATION Micronclean’s primary strategic choice is to
position itself as the technological market
leader and this defines the business
As a result, Micronclean operate a
discrete RD&T Unit that is focussed on
taking concepts and ideas and from
these delivering innovative new products
and solutions to serve our customers
worldwide. Whilst the focus of R&D must
be firmly on the bringing to market of new
products and services, it is also heavily
involved in the incremental improvement
of existing products, services and internal
systems that are necessary to maintain our
position of market leadership.
EXCELLENCE Excellence is Micronclean’s business
process to continually improve the quality
conformance and cost base of the
business’s products and services.
At the core of Micronclean is a drive to
lead the market technologically. This is
shown by the invention, introduction and
refinement of industry leading ideas.
Production facilities that break new
ground. Control systems that ensure
product conformance. Software that
produces unparalleled product traceability.
Environmental monitoring systems to allow
parametric release of product and GMP
compliance.
It is all too easy, with a new successful
product that is producing good margins
and with little competitive pressure, to rest
on one’s laurels. However, cost controls
are still vital as lowering costs allows
Micronclean to simultaneously ensure its
future survival but also pass on a lower
price to customers.
At the end of the day excellence is all about
delighting our customers and surpassing
their expectations.

Contamination Control for Critical Environments
6 Micronclean Consumables Catalogue / April 2017
BIG BLUE BOOKCHOOSING CONSUMABLESPLANNING, SOURCING AND OPTIMISING CLEANROOM CONSUMABLES SUPPLY
CLEANROOM OPERATIONS WILL NEED CONSUMABLEPRODUCTS FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS INCLUDINGHOUSEKEEPING AND CLEANING, AS CLOTHING, OR ASITEMS OF PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT.
As a result, it is likely that a range of
products will be needed and it will usually be
most efficient and cost effective to source
as many products as possible from a single
supplier.
There are various methods to identify
consumable products for an application
and the simplest is to merely produce a list
of currently purchased items. However,
the most productive system is to use
a simple assessment check-list which
can be easily applied to any cleanroom
consumable product. As the annual spend
on consumables is likely to be a significant
part of the whole cleanroom production
budget a careful assessment of actual
requirements can be beneficial in achieving
financial and efficiency savings.
For a small department, this type of
assessment will be relatively easy however,
for a larger operation, involving several
production units, it will be more effective. to
gather the information on a departmental
basis before collating the information into a
total purchasing requirement.
An example check-list is shown on the right
however it is not intended to be exhaustive
and additional information may be needed
for specific applications.
What are the contamination control requirements of the area in which the consumable will be used?
Are there any registered regulatory authority requirements?
Are there any Health and Safety considerations?
Will the consumable item be required as PPE (personal protective equipment)?
For consumable clothing items what range of sizes is needed?
Are there any specific contamination control requirements for the product being manufactured?
What level of particulate and fibre decontamination is needed for the consumable product?
Will the consumable require ESD (electro-static discharge) properties?
Does the consumable need to be sterile?
How does the consumable need to be packed or presented to meet contamination control requirements and operating procedures?
What product conformance documentation is required?
Are there any International or National standards or test protocols against which the product must be tested?
What is the minimum shelf-life required?
How critical is this product to production continuity?
Does storage space or distribution to point-of-use present any problems or require additional equipment?
Are adequate and acceptable disposal facilities in place for the discarded consumable and its packaging?
Does the product need to be identified for use in a specific area?
Can a consumable product’s design attributes be selected to improve operational efficiency or safety?
Will product trials and/or validation be required?
What quantities of the consumable product are required annually?
Are unusually large quantities of product needed at specific times to meet peak requirements?
Is there a consumables budget?
At what date should supply commence?

14 Micronclean Consumables Catalogue / April 2017
BIG BLUE BOOKPREPARING A CLEANING PLANCREATING A CLEANING PLAN AND SOPS
The plan will provide clear information when discussing
requirements with cleaning suppliers, and for developing cleaning
standard operating procedures (SOPs) and a staff training
programme.
Any changes to the cleanroom facility or its function must be
assessed using the cleaning plan and a new revision of the
plan produced when required with traceability of the changes
implemented. A cleaning plan will be a useful reference when
cleaning validations and re-qualifications are performed and is also
essential for customer or compliance audits.
The cleaning plan will define;
• What is to be cleaned
• How the cleaning will be carried out
• When the cleaning is to be carried out
• Who is responsible for cleaning
When producing a cleaning plan the different cleanliness zones and
areas of greatest risk to product should be detailed.
Locations of manufacturing equipment, dedicated cleaning
equipment e.g. connection points for built-in vacuum system and
garment issue and disposal points should be shown.
Any areas of notable hazards, first aid boxes and emergency exits
must be clearly identified.
The cleaning plan will include details of the cleaning equipment and
chemicals and the associated dilution and application rates specific
to the production unit.
The order, frequency and methods of cleaning will also be chosen
to suit each unit however the following principles of cleanroom
cleaning will apply to all plans.
• Cleaning must start with the cleanest area and finish with the
least clean area.
• Cleaning follows the air pressure cascade in a series of
cleanrooms from the highest pressure to the lowest
pressure.
• In a cleanroom cleaning starts at the point furthest from the exit
and works towards the exit.
• Cleaning is carried out in a series of steps starting with the
removal of visible contamination followed by the removal of
microscopic particulate.
• When a chemical sanitiser is used the correct concentration,
volume and surface contact time must be clearly stated.
• No cleaning equipment or products must be specified which will
produce particulate contamination or leave harmful residues.
• Cleaning operations which have the potential to cause
contamination e.g. emptying garment discard bins, must be
identified and confined to non-critical areas.
• Any staff involved with cleaning must be properly trained and
equipped.
• Any cleaning operations involving hazardous materials must be
identified and all aspects of cleaning and disposal clearly
described.
• All cleaning activities need to be appropriately recorded. The
cleaning records need to be reviewed on a scheduled frequency
and retained for future reference.
A cleaning plan may provide sufficient information for a small
operation, however it is usually beneficial to produce SOPs
(Standard Operating Procedures) for each cleaning task which will

BUCKETLESS MOPPING SYSTEMThe PureGuard Mopping System is a fully validated bucketless
process designed to reduce contaminants from the cleanroom
and improve cGMP compliance. The system eliminates exposed
chemical and soiled water from your cleaning process, whilst also
removing the need for operators to mix/dilute cleaning
chemicals.
PureGuard utilises pre-dosed disposable micro-fibre mops that
are tested and validated for a 15m2 coverage of floors, walls and
ceilings. The mops are evenly and uniformly dosed in an ISO4
filling area, clean packed, double bagged and sterilised by Gamma
Irradiation. As the mops are pre-dosed they are equally effective
when used singularly for smaller spaces or as part of a trolley
based system for the cleaning of larger areas.

DRY & PRE-SATURATED MOPPING SYSTEM
DISPOSABLE MOP MATERIAL : SHORT PILE MICROFIBREDesigned for cleanroom applications up to
ISO Class 4, this very low shedding polyester
microfibre mop has fully bound edges and
due to the polyester reservoir holds enough
disinfectant to provide 15m2 cleaning and
application coverage. Gamma irradiated. The
rear side of the mop has 2 pockets to enable
a secure fit and hands free connection to
mop head.
As a guide to customers, Micronclean has indicated the highest classification of cleanroom each product would typically be used in.
18 Micronclean Consumables Catalogue / April 2017
PUREGUARDMOPPING SYSTEMHOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
PureGuard Mops are delivered either
singularly or in packs of ten, these are
cleanroom presaturated with cleaning
agent to achieve 15m2 coverage and
gamma sterilised.
Once all the soiled mops have been placed
in the cleanroom waste sack , seal and
remove from the trolley.
Place your next order of PureGuard mops with Micronclean. Simple, safe and compliant
reducing SOPs and eliminating the chance for cross contaminations or operator dilution
errors.
Remove the outer bag and insert the mop
pack into the dispenser attached to the
trolley.
Using the system’s cleanroom cutter, open
the mop bag.
STAGE 1 STAGE 2
STAGE 11 STAGE 10
STAGE 3
19Micronclean Consumables Catalogue / April 2017
PUREGUARDMOPPING SYSTEM
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
The now opened bag is then stretched
over the special spring action arms. This
action ensures unimpeded access to the
‘stack’ of mops.
The stainless steel mop head frame is
hinged and by un-clipping this hinge,
the mop frame can be lowered into the
open bag and engaged into the mop end
pockets.
Once the mop frame is engaged, a light
push locks the hinge and the mop and
frame are now connected and ready to
use without having to touch the mop with
gloved hands.
Each mop within the pack will effectively
cover 15m2 depending on levels of
contamination. Wall and ceiling use is
easiest with mop head set to move in one
plane only.
When a mop is used, a single click on the
mop frame over the soiled collector releases
the used mop into the cleanroom waste
sack. A new mop head can now be attached
and the cleaning process can continue.
Floor mopping is best approached with the
mop head adjusted to move in two planes,
so an overlapping sinusoidal action is made.

defence in protecting your environment
from airborne particulate and your
operators from the environment. Offering
Category III chemical protection this low
linting barrier fabric provides customers
an economical alternative. SureGuard
micro porous fabric is manufactured
from Polypropylene with a Polyethylene
laminate, affording high levels of cleanliness
with a superior tensile strength. Water
vapour transmission rates exceed those
of other disposables providing superb
comfort and breathability. CE marked to
Type 5 & 6, SureGuard provides a cost
effective option for disposable apparel
without sacrificing quality.
SUREGUARD GARMENTSSureGuard is manufactured from
two materials bonded together. The
first material is a specially designed
polypropylene textile that makes the
material strong and hard to puncture.
The second material is a film
that has very small holes
in it.
These holes will not
permit chemicals to
pass through but will
permit air and water
vapour to pass through;
the fabric is therefore
breathable and
comfortable to wear.
The Polyethylene film
ensures that the outside
of the suit is resistant to most chemicals
and will not wet out.
The interior material will transport
perspiration away from the wearer making
it unique from the other products where
moisture pools and drips.

BIG BLUE BOOKGARMENTS & CHANGE FREQUENCY
GOWNING TECHNIQUES AND GARMENT SYSTEMS
GOWNING TECHNIQUES AND CHANGING PROCEDURESAll gowning techniques and changing
procedures should be kept as simple as
possible whilst still maintaining the level of
contamination control required by the
production process.
Staff are required to use the gowning
techniques several times each day and
significant production time can be lost in
large production areas if unhelpful
protocols are introduced.
Unnecessarily complicated changing
procedures can also lead to staff
shortcutting the system increasing the
risk of contamination.
Thoughtful siting of changing equipment
such as personal lockers, garment
dispensers and hand sanitisers can add
significantly to the ease and efficiency of
the gowning procedure and mapping the
flow of personnel through the system can
assist in this.
Types of garment and garment fastenings
will also affect gowning techniques, a
simple centre zip coat being easier to put
on effectively than full cleanroom clothing
incorporating undergarments, dedicated
footwear, hood,boots, mask, goggles and
gloves.
GARMENT SYSTEMSCleanroom clothing acts as a mobile filter for the wearer and the basic
rule is that more cover = more contamination control, however the use
of more clothing layers will result in an increase in clothing costs and
the time taken for gowning to access clean areas.
For some production processes it may also be necessary to consider
special requirements for cleanroom clothing e.g. chemical resistance,
flame retardancy or water repellency.

CHANGING FREQUENCYThe frequency of change of cleanroom
clothing is also critical to effective control
of contamination. Some published
guidance is available and The Institute of
Environmental Sciences and Technology,
Contamination Control Division, have
produced a useful Recommended Practice;
IEST-RP-CC003ref1
This document addresses the gowning of
personnel as an important aspect of
cleanroom contamination control and gives
guidance on the selection, specification,
maintenance and testing of clothing for
use in aseptic and non-aseptic cleanroom
conditions.
It provides recommendations on the types
of clothing appropriate for different ISO
14644-1 classified areas and recommends
change frequencies for these areas, as
shown in the table below.

1. MATERIALButyl (BHP): Highest water vapour/gas
impermeability, very resistant to ketones,
concentrated oxidizing acids, alkalis and
salts.
CSM (previously Hypalon): Particularly
suited to situations where hydrogen
peroxide and peracetic acid are used, very
resistant to reducing acid, alkalis and salts.
Natural Rubber: Good behaviour to acids,

GAUNTLETS, SLEEVES & CUFFSFOR ISOLATORS, GLOVEBOXES & RABS
ISOLATOR SLEEVE, CUFF & GLOVE SYSTEMUtilising a separate sleeve and glove
can be an excellent way to reduce cross
contamination whilst minimising the annual
budget on Isolator PPE. A sleeve does not
have direct product contact, therefore
should have a longer life cycle than a
complete gauntlet Micronclean offer 3
styles of Isolator Sleeves which combined
with a Easy Change cuff system. allow
gloves to be changed quickly and easily
without breaching the integrity of your
controlled environment.
THE EASY CHANGE CUFF SYSTEMGlove changes are both time consuming
and a potential for loss of containment.
The Easy Change glove cartridge system
allows glove replacement without breaking
containment in a quick and effective
manner The system allows for a seal with
virtually any beaded glove.

TRANSFER PROCESSThe transfer process is the process used when anything is transferred from an area
of lower environmental grade to one of higher standard.
ALCOHOL TRANSFERThe most common alcohols used are 70% IMS or 70% IPA.
The usual procedure is to spray, wipe the surface then spray again.
VAPORISED HYDROGEN PEROXIDE(VHP) TRANSFERVaporised hydrogen peroxide(VHP) involves the vaporisation of the gas into the
cabinet using a specialist machine. When the whole of the cabinet has been filled
with the gas and all surfaces covered, the machine switches to pumping clean air.
It is this process of air removing the gas from the surface that sanitises it.
Typical ancillaries which might be included in a sterile pack include dispensing
pins, fluid connectors and needles. All custom packs are supplied in transparent,
easy-tear, quad laminate pouches which are VHP and alcohol impermeable
rendering them suitable for most transfer processes.

especially useful prior to inspection, audit
or validation.
The Decontamination Clean is specifically
designed to remove heavy bioburden
and large amounts of particulate, and to
