L'annee 1988-89 a vu la Communaute electroacoustiquecanadienne (CEC) s'impliquer avec d'autres societesmusicales au pays, a l'etranger et au niveau international.Voici une liste des activites et des realisations de la CEC aucours de sa troisieme annee d'existence (juin 1988-mai 1989)et des activites, des realisations et des projets a venir.

• La CEC est provisoirement recue en tant que federationnationale par 1a Confederation internationale demusique electroacoustique (CIME) lors de sa reunionannuelle a Bourges enjuin 1988.
• Le projet d'Archives electroacoustiques CEC/CMC quiconsiste a transferer les ceuvres electroacoustiquescanadiennes sur formataudionumerique (DAT) est en coursde realisation. n s'agit d'un projet commun a la CEC et auCentre de musique canadienne (CMC) qui est subventionnepar Ie Conseil des arts du Canada (Musique et Opera). Cinqmagnetophones DAT, environ 300 cassettes DAT et 2000cassettes analogiques ont ete achetes pour la realisation de ceprojet d'envergure. Les magnetophones sont places dans lesbureaux regionaux du CMC a travers Ie Canada.
• La CEC en collaboration avec la Music Gallery (Toronto,Ontario) a organise les premieres Journeeselectroacoustiques CEC 1988, Diffusion!. Un evenementqui a eu lieu ala Music Gallery du 8 au 11 septembre et quiregroupait plus de 50 membres de la CEC (compositeurs,interpretes, etudiants et radiodiffuseurs) dans cinq concertset trois sessions de communications. La CanadianBroadcasting Corporation (CBC), la societe radiophoniqued'etat, a capte tous les concerts pour l'emission de musiquecontemporaine «Two New Hours». Certains de cesenregistrements ont aussi ete diffuses a l'emission «Musiqueactuelle» du Reseau FM de la Societe Radio-Canada. De plus,la CEC y a tenu une assemblee generale de ses membresdurant,laquelle Ie Banff Centre for the Arts d'Alberta s'estpropose pour organiser les prochaines Journeeselectroacoustiques CEC, >convergence<, en novembre 1989.Les Journees electroacoustiques CEC 1988, Diffusion! ont eterendues possibles grace al'assistance du Conseil des arts duCanada (Musique et Opera, Office des tournees) et de laCanadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). During the year 1988-89, the Canadian ElectroacousticCommunity (CEC) started relationship with other musicCanadian, foreign and international societies. Here is a listofthe activities and realizations of the CEC for its 3rd yearof operation (June 1988-May 1989) and the upcomingactivities, realizations and projects.
1988-1989
• The CEC has become a provisional national federation ofthe International Confederation for ElectroacousticMusic (ICEM) during the June 1988 ICEM AnnualMeeting in Bourges. The CEC has paid its annual dues of250 USA$ for 1988 and for 1989.
• The CEC/CMC Electroacoustic Archive project whichwill transfer the Canadian electroacoustic works onto adigital audio format (DAT) is under way. This project is acollaboration between the Canadian Music Centre (CMC) __and the CEC and is funded by the Canada Council (Musicand Opera). Five DAT recorders, over 300 DAT cassettes,and 2000 analog audiocassettes were purchased for thislarge-scale project. The tape recorders were distributed tothe five regional offices of the CMC throughout Canada.
• The CEC has organized in collaboration with the MusicGallery (Toronto, Ontario) the first 1988 CECElectroacoustic Days, Diffusion!. An event which tookplace at the Music Gallery on September 8-11, 1988. Itbrought together more than 50 members of the CEC(composers, performers, students and radiobroadcasters)in 5 concerts and 3 paper sessions. The radio of theCanadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the nationalradio, has recorded all five concerts for its contemporarymusic program "Two New Hours". Some of theserecordings were also broadcast on the French radionetwork, the Societe Radio-Canada, on the program"Musique actuelle". The CEC also had its General MeetingofMembers during Diffusion!. It is at the meeting that theBanff Centre for the Arts has proposed to host andorganized the next GEC Electroacoustic Days,>convergence< in November, 1989. This event was madepossible with the assistance of the Canada Council (Musicand Opera, Touring Office) and the CanadianBroadcasting Corporation (CBC). Finally Queen'sUniversity (Kingston, Ontario) was also involved in theorganization of this event by offering its facilities and eContact! 3.2 Octobre / October 1989

De plus, Ie numero 2.5 a etedistribue a- plus de 800 exemplaires au Canada et al'etranger.
• C'est dans ce dernier numero de Contact! que DavidKeane a redige, pour la CEC, une premiere ebauche au sujetd'une norme internationale pour les bandeselectroacoustiques. Ce premier document sera presente ala reunion de la CIME en octobre 1989.
• En mai 1989, une invitation officielle a ete envoyee a- laCIME conviant l'Assemblee generale de la CIME aMontreal au debut du mois de novembre 1990 profitant de latenue du festival nord-americain «New Music America» quise tiendra pour sa onzieme edition a- Montreal, du 1er au 10novembre 1990. Les representants de federations nationalespouITont ainsi profiter de ce sejour en assistant auxnombreux concerts programmes pendant cette periode.
• Le comite d'etude visant la mise sur pied du Reseau CEC,Ie reseau de poste electronique et de base de donnees de laCEC, a depose son rapport en mars 1989. Ce n'est qu'en mai1989 que la proposition de la Queen's University des'occuper de l'ordinateur central a ete acceptee. Le systemed'operation est actuellement en cours de traduction (pourpouvoir offrir un environnement de travail en fran~aisou enanglais selon l'utilisateur) et l'acces a- cet ordinateur serarendu possible grace au raccordement (en chantier) a- unreseau de telecommunication commercial.
• En octobre 1988, la CEC a offert ses services decommunications a- quelques organismes etrangers :
• Le journal americain «Leonardo» et la CEC ont concluun echange mutuel d'espace d'information dans nospublications respectives. La CEC a publie deuxdemi-page d'information sur Leonardo dans Contact!2.4 et 2.5. Les membres de la CEC ooneficient d'un tauxpreferentiel d'abonnement.• La Computer Music Association (CMA) ofIre aussiune reduction a- son taux d'affiliation aux membres de laCEC. La GSC a distribue des exemplaires du bulletin dela CMA, «Array» it tous ses membres. La CMA et la CECont aussi conclu d'etre membre de l'autre organisation'• Des pamphlets annon~antIe numero special de larevue beIge Lien: «L'espace du son», Editions Musiqueset Recherches, Ohain (Belgique) ont ete distribues auKmembres de la CEC qui ont ooneficie d'un prix reduit.• Le magazine canadien de langue anglaiseMUSICWORKS offre aussi aux membres de la CEC untaux d'abonnement preferentiel.

• The CEC is still publishing its information newsletterContact!. The second volume had 5 issues. It wasdistributed to the CEC members and associates members(about 180) and to all the ICEM national federations during1988-89. Issue 2.5 was also widely distributed to over 800individuals in Canada and abroad.
• It is in this last issue that David Keane has written, forthe CEC, a first proposition for International Standards.This first document will be presented to the ICME AnnualMeeting in October, 1989.
• An official invitation was sent to the ICME in May, 1989inviting the 1990 ICME Annual Meeting in Montreal inearly November 1990. This period coincide with the NorthAmerican Festival "New Music America" (producedoutside the United States of America for the first time),November 1-10,1990. The representants of the NationalFederations will be able to benefit from their stay by goingto many concerts organized at that time.
• The study group on the organization of the CECNetwork, for electronic mail and database, reported to theBoard of Directors of the CEC in March, 1989. In May,1989, the proposition to manage and service the computermade by Queen's University was accepted. The operatingsystem is being translated at the moment (to offer Frenchand/or English menus) and access to the computer will bepossible thought the use (in-progress) of a commercialtelecommunication channel.
• In October 1988, the CEC has offered its communicationsservices to different foreign organizations:
• A mutual exchange of promotion pages with theAmerican Journal "Leonardo" was agreed. The CEChas published two half-page of information onLeonardo in Contact! 2.4 and 2.5. CEC members whowished to subscribe to that journal has a preferentialrate.• The Computer Music Association (CMA) alsooffers special membership rates to CEC members. TheCEC has mailed copies of the CMA newsletter "Array"to its membership. Both organizations have alsomutually agreed to become a member of the otherorganization.• The CEC has also mailed promotional flyers for thespecial issue of the Belgium electroacoustic publicationLien: "L'espace du son", Editions Musiques etRecherches, Ohain (Belgium), 1989. A specialreduced rate was offered to CEC members.• MUSICWORKS, a Canadian magazine of newmusic, also offers a special subscription rate to the CECmembers.

• Les Journees electroacoustiques GEC, >convergence<auront lieu au Banff Centre for the Arts du 10 au 13novembre 1989. Sept concerts, cinq sessions decommunications, quatre evenements speciaux en plus detrois sessions de discussions et de l'Assemblee generale desmembres de la CEC sont au programme. Plus d'unecinquantaine de compositeursseront reunis pendant cesquatrejours d'activites. La tenue de cet evenementest rendupossible grace a l'assistance du Banff Centre of the Arts, duConseil des arts du Canada (Musique et Opera, Office destournees), du ministere federal des Communications et de laCanadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
• Les bureaux de la CEC ont ere relocalises enjuin dernierdans les bureaux du Centre de musiquecanadienne-Montreal. La CEC tiens aremercier laConcordia University (la Faculre des beaux-arts, et Iedepartement de musique en particulier) qui a appuye lesactivires de la CEC depuis sa fondation. Since the beginning of its 4th year of operations, the issuesand work in progress have developed.
• The CEC Electroacoustic Days, >convergence< willtake place at the Banff Centre for the Arts, November10-13,1989. Seven concerts, five paper sessions, fourspecial events and three discussion sessions and the CECGeneral Meeting of Members are planned. Over fiftycomposers will be present during the four days of,activities. This event was made possible with the assistanceof the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada Council (Musicand Opera, Touring Office), the Federal Department ofCommunications and the Canadian BroadcastingCorporation (CBC).
• The CEC offices has been relocated last June in theoffices of the Canadian Music Centre-Quebec Region.The CEC wish to thank Concordia University (Faculty ofFine Arts, and particularly the Department of Music) for itssupport and use offacilities since the foundation of theCEC. The new address of the CEC is: CEC / CP 845,Succursale Place d'Armes / Montreal (Quebec) / CanadaH2Y3V2.
• Contact/ remains the central communication mean forthe CEC. The first issue ofvolume 3 (3.1) was published inAugust; issue 3.2 in October.

Outre lavive deception que j'en ressent, la situation dans laquelle cerefus place mon travail par rapport a la vocation que semblese donner la CEC est quelque peu deconcertante.Je suis un des seuls, sinon Ie seul, compositeurs canadiens aamvrer dans Ie domaine de l'installation, et ce, dans un senstres particulier, en axant ma recherche sur les dispositifs dediffusion specifiques ala materialite d'un amvre plastique...II m'apparait , en ce cas que si la CEC se veut representativede toutes les tendances electroacoustiques etparticulierement de son «actualite», Ie refus d'un projet telque Ie mien trahit une orientation qui tend a favoriser despratiques musicales plus... conservatrices. Des lors, librecours al'imagination de determiner de quelle «convergence»il s'agit! Je suis en mesure de comprendre, etant moi-memeorganisateur au sein de l'ACREQ, et l'etant anciennement ala CEC, toute la complexite organisationnelle qu'implique untel evenement. • 6 Last July, I was informed that my sound sculptureproposal to >convergence< was not selected. I am notonly deceived by this decision but the situation (ie: the placeof my work in relation to the goals that the CEC seems tohave) caused by this refusal is disconcerting.I am one of the few, if nor the only one, Canadiancomposers to work in the field of installations-in the veryspecific direction where I designed diffusion systemsspecifically in relation to the material quality of the visualpiece... It is clear to me that if the CEC wants to berepresentative of all the directions of electroacoustics andparticularly ofits "current" state, the refusal of such aproject as mine contradicts a tendency which favoursmore... conservative musical practices. From this point on,you can imagine the kind of "convergence" is implied here!I can understand-being involved as organizer withACREQ, and having been on the CEC board-theorganizational complexity of such an event.
