Cascade TheatreThe Cascade Theatre, located in the heart of Downtown was built in 1935. It was a classic Downtown landmark featuring a large front facade with a neon pylon sign, marquee, and cast concrete frieze depicting northern California industry. Today, the Cascade Theatre is one of the fi nest examples of Art Deco architecture in northern California. The theater has been restored into a multi-use performing arts venue in a way that honors the building’s heritage and is consistent with its designation on both the California and National Registries of Historic Places.

Sundial Bridge at Turtle BayThis incredible glass decked pedestrian bridge links the north and south campuses of the new Turtle Bay Exploration Park and serves as a new entrance for Redding’s Sacramento River Trail system. The unique design of the bridge was conceived by world renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It is the fi rst bridge of its kind in the United States and the largest working sundial that is a bridge in the world! The massive 210’ pylon leans due north and functions as the gnomon of a sundial, casting its giant shadow on a garden-bordered dial plate at the bridge’s north end. The bridge is not only an artistic statement but is also sensitive to its beautiful river setting. The tall pylon and cable stays allow the bridge to avoid nearby sensitive salmon-spawning habitat while encouraging public appreciation for the river.

SCENIC DRIVES/BACK COUNTRY ROADSRedding is THE place to start your scenic drive or off-road adven-ture! Looking for a great place to get away in your RV? The Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association, in cooperation with the United States Forest Service, has created a brochure that breaks the area’s scenic byways down into distance, minimum driving time, best time to go, what to see along the way, and services along the route. One of only two All American Roads in California—the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway—is located right in Redding’s back yard! Off-roading is also popular here, and there are a number of scenic trails that will challenge your vehicle’s 4-wheel drive, leaving your car dusty but not scratched. If you’re looking for the perfect off-road adventure, try the “An Adventure Around Every Corner!” brochure. Both of these brochures are available free of charge by calling the Redding Visitor’s Bureau!

Contact the Redding Visitor’s Bureau for either of these free brochures. 530-225-4100 / 800-874-7562

SHOPPINGShopping in the City of Red-ding does not disappoint. Red-ding has everything from brand name stores to local boutiques. One of the most popular places to shop is the Mt Shasta Mall, featuring Macy’s, JC Penny, and Sears.

KAYAKING/RAFTING/LAKE AND RIVER CRUISESIf you’re looking for a wild adventure, try white water rafting on the upper Sacramento River. Come with a spirit of adventure, and pick a trip of your own liking, from mild to wild! Since the upper Sacramento River is a wild river and not con-trolled by dam release, rafting is best here during the spring and early summer when winter snows melt. Rafting in the nearby Trinity Alps is usually available throughout the summer. Also avail-able in far northern California are fi ve other wild and scenic rivers within a two hour drive of Redding. These offer rafting oppor-tunities from an exciting Class 3 trip to an extremely challenging Class 5 adventure. A variety of rafting companies lead trips from April through September. For a more relaxing adventure, try kaya-king on Whiskeytown Lake or a guided cruise on Shasta Lake.
