Dear Mr. James:

rv1arch 23, 1967

Thanks for your letter of March 21st with map of the Josephine claims I and the copy of the 1910 faUning Record.

It seems evident that ·the Josephine claims are unpatented, and I suggest that you write to Mr .. Robert Lenon, 325 IvlcKaown Avenue, Patagonia, Arizona. He 1s a mining engineer and land surveyor,. long and well known in the area. If he doesn't know the claims, he may know someone who does; and of course he could check them at the recorder's office and on the ground if you want to go that far.

Our field engineer is not scheduled to be in the area again before NIay, when you are due at Phoenix.

FK:p

Sincerely,

FRANK P. KNIGHT, Director.

Dear Sir:

I am sending you a pencil tracing of the two claims I have been

tryimg get some information as to owenership of these claims o

The report I have states that these claims have been processed

for patent, but does not say that patent has been applied for.

I am also enclosing a copy of The Mining Record Dated in 1910

This is the only copy the lVlining Record I have and as you can see

it is getting in rather bad condition so if you can use it you

are welcome to it.

1 expect to be in Phoenix between now and the middle of Mayo

At that time I will bring the other old magizines with me and you

can go over them and keep the ones you needo

Sincerly Yours

Dear Mr. James:

March 14, 1967

Our field engineer I Jerry Irwin has sent us the enclosed photocppied map of two claims in Sec. 35, T. 20 S. I R •. 14 E., which could be the ones you are interested in. He sent no explanation with the map but you will note that this Sec. 35 is adjacent to the Sec. 2, T. 21 S. , R. 14 E. in which you placed the two Josephine cla.ims. You also will note that the claims on this map are Josephine Lot No. 49 and Emma - Lot No. 48.

It is likely that the copy 1s of a map at the County Assessor's office and that there is no record of patented Josephine claims in Sec. 2. You may have had this information and we will hear further I but this is being sent to perhaps save you the trouble of getting a copy of the map.

With further reference to your inquiry about claims known as Josephine Nos. 1 and ·2:

Since these were surveyed in 1956, it well may be that they have been patented, in which case the Santa Cruz County Assessor at the County Courthouse I Nogale :3, Ariz ona, could tell. you th,= ,:w\t?ner or owners.

Our iieldengineer expect.::::-d to learn .something on a trip to the area March 2nd, but didn't g,et to and h13 n~xt scheduled trip L3 on May 4th. However I he may pick up some information before then. ~Aaybe you have found out something e 1s eVvhere .

Thank you for telling" us about your Engineering and Mining Journa.ls back to 1907 . '';'/e are mi s :3ing many is sues prior to 1943 and a fevv thereafter. If you could give us an idea of vlhat you cover prior to 1949 and vvhat your price would be for them, we would like to knovv. If, on th8 other hand, you wish to dis pose of all of them, our budget probably couldn't stand the strain. Should you care to give them to us, they would be most welcome and would be put to good use. The duplicates probably would be appreciated by the Arizona state University library. Plea se let us hear from you, and you might also give us an idea of charges for boxing and shipping.

Your interest in thi~-3 i;-, appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

FRANK P. KNIGHT, Director.

Dear Mr .. James:

In reply to your letter of recent d~ te to Mr. Knight, we regret that we have no fil~ informa tion on Josephine No.1 and 2 cla ims.

Sec. 2, T 21 S R14E shows on our maps a s being in the Baca Float boundaries and it is quite possible the claims are part of the property referred to by Axel Johnson in his memo of May 20 I 1965 - copy enclosed.

We have no further information but will forward your letter to the eng1neer now in the Tucson office who may have further knowledge of the area and the claims 1n particular ..

Mr. Knight is out of town at the present, but you will undoubtedly hear from him next week about the Engineering and Mining Journals which you mention.

Yours truly,

Adm. As sistant to Mr. Knight.

Dear Jerry:

1.Nith r·eference to ~nquiry of Denzil JameSO~ Albuquerque about claims in the Tyndall district cTA'ned in 1955 by El Jakarta rv1ining Co. Ltd.:

I disagree with your idea of telling him to write to Bob Lenon. Our chief value is information service. It ·Nould cost you little tim,:.; to find out from Bob, .t\xel or someone else if they knew the claims and who owns them. If one of them knovvs the property, James can be told that he does, or that he could find out the present status. If Bob were the one who knew, such an introduction \vould do him more good than telling James to write him first off. T. N. Stevens surveyed the claims so why pick Bob instead of Stevens' successor, vli'ho should know v'lhether the claims were patented ot unpatent ad federal lands?

We can discuss this at the next meeting with Charlie Willis.

Enclosed is copy of letter to Jame s •

Would suggest that Mr. James II~W~#~# write to Bob Lenon in regard to the Josephine Claims. According to my map they are just north of the Baca Float Line. I think that I know where they are but am not sure.

Will try to find out more from Bob Lenon on the 2 of March
