Many parents may ask - do we need to enhance lateral thinking abilies in our children? The answer is very simple. All children need to improve and enhance lateral thinking processes to help achieve academic excellence, professional rewards and social responsibilies. Children also need lateral thinking in many other ways like: Innovate things and ideas Generate new suggesons Develop new concepts Solve problems in a creave manner. When our students apply the principles of lateral thinking, they can also learn a number of unusual techniques and methods like: Apply the idea of alternaves - This technique helps children to breed, nurture and develop new ideas and suggesons. New ideas can lead to beer thinking skills that are newer in approach. When children learn the method to seek soluons to a problem in an alternave manner, they can enhance their brain with beer thinking processes. Face the problem as a challenge - Every problem is a challenge! Solving any problem requires effort and dedicaon. Children may need to treat problems as a challenge and treat it as immediate priority. Lateral thinking is a potent weapon that can help children to solve any challenging problem. Some of the most producve ways of encouraging lateral thinking skills is providing different puzzles, riddles and mind games. These puzzles and riddles are an unusual way of developing new ideas to solve any problems. They also help you create and idenfy new concepts and ideas. Another benefit of using these lile tools is finding new and innovave ways to convert problems into soluons. Children who use lateral thinking will always come up with unusual soluons that are unorthodox as well. For children who are adept at solving problems by using lateral thinking, the causes of the problems are irrelevant and unimportant. In fact, they could be invaluable tools for solving the problems. Lateral thinking is a very powerful tool that allows children to think and act outside the usual box. Many children simply fail because they e themselves up with a mode of thinking that is obvious and common. This has been an ongoing exercise for our Year 8 class, and one that they have thoroughly enjoyed!!

FACULTY IN FOCUS - MATHS

In Year 8 Maths A, the students have been learning to challenge their normal way of thinking and to look at solving problems laterally. This process is called Lateral Thinking, which was developed and pioneered by Dr. Edward de Bono. It provides a deliberate, well-planned and systematic process that eventually results in creative thinking and problem solving abilities. Lateral thinking process assists you in many ways like:

Think in a creative manner

Convert difficult problems into definite opportunities

Help increase number of ideas by using and adapting unconventional thinking techniques and methods

Tap hidden talents and skills to find solutions to problems.

Many parents may ask - do we need to enhance lateral thinking abilities in our children? The answer is very simple. All children need to improve and enhance lateral thinking processes to help achieve academic excellence, professional rewards and social responsibilities. Children also need lateral thinking in many other ways like:

Innovate things and ideas

Generate new suggestions

Develop new concepts

Solve problems in a creative manner. When our students apply the principles of lateral thinking, they can also learn a number of unusual techniques and methods like: Apply the idea of alternatives - This technique helps children to breed, nurture and develop new ideas

and suggestions. New ideas can lead to better thinking skills that are newer in approach. When children learn the method to seek solutions to a problem in an alternative manner, they can enhance their brain with better thinking processes. Face the problem as a challenge - Every problem is a challenge! Solving any problem requires effort and dedication. Children may need to treat problems as a challenge and treat it as immediate priority. Lateral thinking is a potent weapon that can help children to solve any challenging problem. Some of the most productive ways of encouraging lateral thinking skills is providing different puzzles, riddles and mind games. These puzzles and riddles are an unusual way of developing new ideas to solve any problems. They also help you create and identify new concepts and ideas. Another benefit of using these little tools is finding new and innovative ways to convert problems into solutions. Children who use lateral thinking will always come up with unusual solutions that are unorthodox as well. For children who are adept at solving problems by using lateral thinking, the causes of the problems are irrelevant and unimportant. In fact, they could be invaluable tools for solving the problems. Lateral thinking is a very powerful tool that allows children to think and act outside the usual box. Many children simply fail because they tie themselves up with a mode of thinking that is obvious and common. This has been an ongoing exercise for our Year 8 class, and one that they have thoroughly enjoyed!!

Principal’s News

Congratulations and thank you to the students and staff that supported the very worthy Jeans for Genes Day fundraiser last Friday. Such a demonstration of community spirit was a great way to finish Education Week.

Last Wednesday was census day for schools with submission of anticipated numbers for 2017 due. At this stage it is anticipated we will have 252 students which means very little change to our existing staff numbers. Although our senior numbers are lower than recent years due to smaller year groups we have had 63 students submit an expression of interest for enrolment in year 7 including 6 students that have been accepted into Aurora College.

Last Friday representatives from Department of Education Properties visit the school to conduct preliminary planning for the construction of new roofing for our original buildings. This project

will be conducted over the next few years and will result in the redesign and replacement of all flat roof surfaces.

Next week our year 12 students will be undertaking their Trial HSC. On behalf of the students, staff and school community I wish them well during this time.

Congratulations to Macy Boland and Sarah Treavors for being last

weeks winners of the canteen vouchers.

Last Friday Canowindra High School staff and students wore jeans for “Jeans for Genes Day”! Organised within the school by the SRC, this is a national event aimed at supporting the work of the Children's Medical Research Institute who tirelessly research into genetic defects & childhood diseases in order to give kids around the world a better chance of a healthy, happy future. The SRC would like to thank everyone who supported the day and helped raise $151.00!

Welcome Bobby and Precious!

Welcome to our 2 new calves, Bobby and Precious who will be spending the term with us as part of the “Cows Create Careers” Program. The Cows Create Careers - Farm Module is a program that aims to increase the awareness of dairy industry careers and pathways in a very hands-on way. Secondary students (Year 8 & Year 9) are educated by rearing two three-week-old calves at school. Supplies and curriculum materials are provided to the school and an industry advocate visits the school to talk to students about their career pathway. Students work in teams of 4-5 to complete projects that will ultimately be presented at a Final Presentation and Awards ceremony.

Pictured are Year 9 students Chanse McLean and Zali Dunn getting to know our two new additions!

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey

We are delighted that this term, Canowindra High, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey this term. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents
