Africa
Since 2010 he is the project leader in a research program on Trypano-
somiasis funded by the Infectiology Program of DFG. Partners in this
program have been the Ahmadu Bello University and NITR in Nigeria
from the beginning. Recently, the consortium has been expanded to
partners in Ghana, Cameroon and Chad. The current funding is until
March 2021 with the title “Animal African Trypanosomiasis in humans:
An emerging zoonosis?”
During these years Prof Kelm supported about ten PhD students from
Africa in their projects by supervision and providing opportunities to per-
form experiments at his laboratory in Germany as well as during their
field work. As integral part of the collaboration with his partners in Africa,
he has performed training programs in Nigeria at ABU and NITR as well
as in Cameroon at the University of Ngaoundere.
Research and capacity building in the area of nutrition and health
On Zanzibar, Prof. Sørge Kelm has been involved in an epidemiological
study “Access to Food and Nutrition Status of Zanzibari Population” in
collaboration with the Bremen Institute for Preventive Studies (BIPS) and
the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA). Since he has taught biochemis-
try for medical, biology and chemistry students for many years in Ger-
many and has extensive experience in developing inter-disciplinary
teaching of international students in Germany and in several African
countries, he now supports SUZA in the development of a new curricu-
lum in biochemistry and nutrition for medical students as well as for pro-
fessionals in the health sector. For this, he developed together with SU-
ZA a new program (MENTION), for which funding has been obtained
fromm DAAD (PAGEL program) for the years 2018 through 2021.

Questions/remarks
- How does the Ethiopian higher education landscape fit into the
international world map?
- How important is the establishment of cooperation between Ethi-
opia and Germany at the political level?
- What are the framework conditions for an exchange between
Ethiopia and Germany at student and staff level?
- What funding instruments are available for the implementation of
joint projects?
- Are there best practice examples of successful cooperation be-
tween Ethiopia and Germany?
The Institute for Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK) at the TU Dresden car-
ries out extensive research and development work in the field of load-bearing lightweight struc-
tures and systems. This is based on a cross-material and cross-product approach. This includes
the entire development chain: material, design, simulation, production, prototype, test, quality
assurance and costs.
The core competence of the ILK lies in the development, design and optimisation of components
and systems for high-performance lightweight construction and prototype production. The mixed
construction method according to the Dresden model "functional integrative system lightweight
construction in multi-material design" plays a central role here. Depending on the requirements,
all material classes from steel, aluminium, magnesium and titanium as well as plastics to ceram-
ics are included according to their constructive-technological property profile, as are composites
with short fibre, continuous fibre or textile reinforcement. Therefore, the ILK team is well
equipped for this. Around 240 employees are currently working here and are able to use re-
search equipment that is unique in the world.
The calculation and design of lightweight structures at the ILK takes into account statistical, cy-
clical and acoustic loads as well as crash and impact loads. Accordingly, implicit and explicit
FEM and coupled FEM/BEM program packages are used as well as specially developed soft-
ware on an analytical basis. Comprehensive experimental equipment is available for material
and component testing.
The institute has extensive experience in the field of function-integrated lightweight construction
system solutions in which, in addition to adapted joining techniques, smart materials and adap-
tronic structures are also used as sensors and actuators.
The early involvement of students in promising research projects leads to the training of creative
graduates with a high level of interdisciplinarity and practical relevance. This has a particularly
stimulating effect on their own field of study of lightweight construction.
