FRONT COVER

I have decided to use this photograph for the front cover to represent young women as powerful and yet attractive. This is done by the model using a direct mode of address whilst being photographed inline with the male gaze, as this is a common convention for women magazines. Therefore, my audience will be able to relate to the image although it is still an aspirational in terms of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD

The photographs have been chosen as it portrays the model in a light hearted humorous way, which helps the audience to personally identity with her in terms of the uses and gratification theory, They were also photographed to adhere to the male gaze, stating that females are submissive to males to the objectification of the photo. However, in one of the medium shots the model is using an direct mode of address with a knowing look therefore also representing her as dominant. Which the target demographic can relate to. These photographs have been chosen as they represent females as dominant apposed to the male gaze that presents women as submissive objects which is being subverted due to the low angle shots. The mise en scene also reinforces the idea of female power to the audience.

CONTENTS PAGE

I am going to incorporate these two photographs within my contents page. These images are photographed within line of the male gaze as they portray the model and therefore representing the audience as submissive yet attractive to males. In the medium shot the model is using a direct mode of address to represent women as dominant as they know in order to become successful in life, they must put on a facade of submission.

I will also be using the long-shot photograph of the model posed in a seductive way and slightly canted on the floor which is in line with the male gaze. Thus, representing females as submissive. The photograph is more appropriate due to the knowing powerful look in her eyes through a dominant mode of address.

CONTENTS PAGE

This photograph is more appropriate for my demographic as the hegemonic representation of males being the dominant genre is present. Which is a quality females find attractive in males therefore enticing the audience to buy the magazine. It also looks as if the model is directly addressing the audience due to the direct mode of address which makes the audience feel connected with the model. This will immediately make the audience think that he is successful in his profession as he is also wearing a suit, which is very appealing to women therefore making them more inclined to buy the magazine and read its content

I chose this photograph as it has one of the best lighting which will give me an advantage during the manipulation of the image of Photoshop therefore, looking more professional. The photograph is shot in line with the male gaze due to the position the female is photographed in therefore representing her as vulnerable. Whilst the male is dominant, as females are attracted to powerful men. The female also looks dangerous due to the connotations of red, which is what some women want to be perceived as, as theybelieve danger can bean attractive quality.

This image is more appealing than the others as it uses the rule of thirds. It is also subverting the hegemonic values of young people wearing hoodies that are perceived as threatening. Instead, she is representing young women as softer than the intended representation due to the soft brown fur used on the hood lining.

I have chosen this image for the editorial letter as I am directly looking into the camera therefore using a direct mode of address to personally connect with the readers.

This image is appropriate for the contents page as the model is subverting the dominant ideology of women being submissive and objectified in magazine. Instead she is representing dominance through mise en scene and a direct mode of address, whilst still appearing feminine.
