About DHANumerous nutritional studies confirm that both, humans and pets, from infancy toadulthood to senior age, benefit from an adequate intake of DHA.

Why DHAgold?

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

What is DHA?

DHA, or Docosahexaenoic acid, is apolyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acidfound throughout the body. It is amajor structural component of brain

tissue and theretina, a keycom ponent ofthe heart, loca -ted in healthyjoints and playsa significant rolein the control ofmultiple cellfunctions likeinflammation or

immune response. DHA omega-3 is therefore essential for properbody function and considered themost important nutritional lipid inour diet.

Not all omega-3’s are equal

Many pet food products claim to be a good source of omega-3 fattyacids, but not all omega-3’s areequal. While DHA provides a broad range of health benefits, shorterchain omega-3’s are mainly asource of energy. Additionally, shorter chain omega-3’s do not efficiently convert to long-chain

DHA in the body, partly because ofthe presence of omega-6 fatty acidscompeting for this conversion. Therefore, the supplementation of a preformed source of DHA is the preferred nutritional strategy.

Algae as a consistent source of DHA

There are many ingredients thatcontain omega-3 fatty acids – butmany of them are not adequatesources of DHA omega-3. For example, flax seed and vegetableoils are mainly a source of shorterchain omega-3’s. Fish oils and fishby-products are the most commonsources of DHA omega-3 used inpet nutrition products. However, the DHA content in fish can varysignificantly dependent on fishspecies, geographical origin andthe way the raw materials areprocessed and stabilized.

At this point modern biotechnologyhelps. Cultivating algae under controlled conditions provides aconsistent alternative source ofDHA-omega-3 which is unaffectedby seasonal fluctuations, the avail ability of marine sources, any geographic variability or unwanted shifts in quality.

Healthy brains contain about 60% struc-tural fats and 30% DHA in the gray matter.DHA is the most abundant fatty acid in thebrain representing about 95% of the totalomega-3’s.

DHA omega-3 Beneficial through all life stages

Visual development

A DHA enriched diet fed to dogs before whelping andduring lactation allows puppies having a significantlyimproved DHA level in their retina, leading to improvedvisual performance in the developing dogs.

Brain development

Feeding dams a diet enriched with DHA during gesta-tion and lactation has been associated with improve-ments in the neurologic development of their puppies.

Trainability

Puppies nourished with high levels of DHA were foundto be more trainable than puppies given low levels ofDHA, supporting the effect of DHA on neurologicalfunction.

Immune and Inflammation response

Supplementation with omega-3’s positively influencesthe cell-mediated immune response. In dogs DHA supports anti-inflammatory effects along with positiveeffects on immune function.

Metabolic syndrome

Management of hyperlipidemia in dogs can beachieved through low fat diets also providing DHA as a lipid lowering agent. In obese cats diets high in omega-3 fatty acids may improve long-term glucosecontrol and decrease plasma insulin concentration, reducing the risk of developing diabetes mellitus.

Mobility and joint care

In dogs with osteoarthritis, omega-3’s help reducing theuse of pain medication required. Omega-3 fatty acidsupplementation can also lead to an improvement inweight bearing for dogs with osteoarthritis.

Skin and coat care

Dogs with canine pruritic skin disease, supplementedwith DHA, showed significant improvements in skinhealth and coat character over time. The quality of adog’s paw pad is also linked to its DHA nutritional status. Dietary omega-3 supplementation is useful inthe treatment of feline skin disorders including miliarydermatitis.

Digestion and gut heath

Omega-3 fatty acids help decrease intestinal in flammation.

Heart health

DHA is beneficial in dogs with cardiac disease and support anti-arrhythmic effects along with positiveeffects on heart rate and blood pressure.

Memory and visual performance

A DSM study showed that a group of 8 to 11 year olddogs fed food containing DHAgold for 6 months hadsignificantly improved memory and visual performance.

DHAgold

DHAgold – a sustainable omega-3 solutionGrowing demand for fish may soonoutstrip supply

While the global population hasswelled to more than 7 billion peo-ple, the world’s natural resourcesare considered nearly static. Theever increasing global consumptionof fish, and our heavy reliance onfish material as a protein source, is bringing us to the critical point

where ocean supplies will fail tomeet the growing demand. Sinceocean fish is a critical food compo-nent in the aquaculture industry,

farm raised fish will not alleviatethe pressure. Projections indicatethat continuing to overfish ouroceans will result in a shortage ofcommercially harvested fish andpotentially lead to extinction of certain species.

There is a pressing need for alter-native sources of DHA omega-3

A factor in the recent surge in thepopularity of fish products, both as a supplement and dinner staple, is theconsumer recognition of theimportant health benefits of omega-3s. Due to theuncertainty surrounding

this traditional source of dietaryDHA omega-3, the quest to deter-mine a sustainable alternative isunderway.

DHAgold from algae provides a solution

Most people believe that fish pro-duce their own DHA, when in fact itis the algae in their food chain thatmakes them a rich source of DHA.Algae are consumed by planktonwhich the small fish eat, then larger fish feed on the smaller fish,a process that transitions the DHAfrom the algae to the fish we eat.

Being based on algal fermentation,DHAgold bypasses the fish andgoes directly to the source.Because DHAgold gets its DHA from algae and not fish, DHAgold is a consistent, sustainable, nonemarine source of DHA which is freeof ocean-borne contaminants.

Making DHAgold

Algae have many biochemical pathways distinct from plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria that represent a virtually untapped genetic resourcethat can greatly benefit human and animal health. What began as astudy on the beneficial use of algae in long-term space flight resultedin the identification of strains of algae that were naturally high produc-ers of DHA.

The DHA-producing algal are grownin large, stainless steel fermenta-tion vessels commonly used in thepharmaceutical and food industriesvia a closed process in cGMP, FDA-inspected facilities. After fermenta-tion, the algal biomass is carefullydried to produce DHAgold. Thesemicroalgal flakes contain a highlevel of DHA ideal for use in pet

nutrition products. The natural protection of the cell walls and the additional natural antioxidants create the stability needed for a longer shelf life. Because it is awhole cell algal, DHAgold has better sensory performance com-pared to fish oil and fish meal.
