OUR THANKS !!Home of Hope wishes to sincerely thank all our benefactors for your wonderful support this past year. Without your assistance we would not be able to continually provide our children with the best possible care and special needs education they require. We truly believe that there is no greater gift that one can give than the gift of helping a child in need and we would like to acknowledge and thank you for doing just that. ! !Every child holds within him a potential to greatness and we as adults hold the keys.!!!!VISION !!A brighter future for every child.!!!!!MISSION To support vulnerable children and families experiencing various hardships, including Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), with a holistic child-centred approach, to help them reach their optimal potential in becoming contributing and socially responsible members of society.!

!!It is once again that time of the year when we at Home of Hope reflect on the year that has passed in what seemed to have been “in two shakes of a lamb’s tail”. We look forward, with anticipation and expectation, to what the next financial year may bring.! !At Home of Hope we believe in maintaining good governance and transparency; subscribing to a code of values and principles intended to ensure that all affairs of the organisation are managed properly. The Management team together with the Board have to ensure that the finances are monitored closely, fundraising and other resources are best utilised to keep the organisation going and constantly review policies and strategies to keep up to date with the ever changing socio-economic environment. !!Every year we strive to ensure that our projects run optimally and that our knowledge grows within our focus areas; particularly that of FASD in order to continue pioneering the way for our children to become responsible, contributing members of society.! !A few highlights from the past year follow:! !•  This year we were fortunate beneficiaries of a Capacity

Building Programme funded by the ApexHi Trust, provided by independent consultants, 4 Chakras. The program allowed us to do a thorough and full assessment of the organisation, have strategic planning sessions and receive much needed support throughout the year. As a result, fundamental decisions and actions were taken with regards to “who we serve”, “what we do” and “why we’re doing it” to shape and guide the organisation with clear direction in response to an ever changing environment, with a focus on the future.!

!•  After four years under the guidance of our partner school,

the West Coast Christian School, we felt the time was right for Amathemba to come into its own as a fully fledged Independent Learning Centre. We have successfully moved our school into a rental premise and the process of registering as an Independent School has begun. Amathemba is now able to accommodate 47 students which means that our numbers have doubled in comparison to previous years. !

!•  Exciting changes are also taking place within our Foster

Cluster scheme; we have welcomed new children and foster parents, we have appointed a Social Auxiliary Worker to assist our current Social Worker in the running of the cluster foster homes and most importantly, our children are thriving in the nurturing family environment of our homes.!

•  Our MAPS (Mentoring and Parent Support Program) is growing steadily, reaching and serving more people in need. The aim of the MAPS program is to offer support to the caregivers and families of children suffering from FASD. The MAPS program was developed and implemented as a result of research showing that there was very little, if any, support to such families despite an overwhelming need for it. We are greatly excited about expanding this program to reach more communities in need. !

•  In addition to our MAPS program, we have also expanded our Professional Training Program; a program designed to educate Professionals on FASD wherever there may be a lack of training or understanding on the issue. Home of Hope has been able to provide information and training programs on FASD to several groups of Undergraduate and Honours students, criminal aid lawyers, educators, nurses and community workers in the past year and we continue to look for avenues of expansion in this regard. !

!We are extremely grateful for growth we see in our projects, but no organisation is immune to challenges and difficulties within its sphere of operation and Home of Hope is no exception. One of our biggest challenges as an organisation looking after abandoned, abused and neglected children, many suffering from FASD, is the cost of the specialised personnel required to provide services focusing on the special needs of our children. !!The number of personnel employed is dependent on the special needs of the children. Our ratio in the special needs school; that of teaching support to child is 1:5 (a maximum of 10 children per class) and in our Cluster homes the ratio of childcare worker to child is 1:3 (a minimum of 6 children per home).!!With the care, education and growth of our children being the most important objective for us, taking into consideration their varying ages, emotional needs and difficult behaviour due to their disabilities, we have no alternative but to provide the ratio as above in order to ensure that our children get the best possible care. In comparison to the cost of care required by neurotypical children it is very costly to provide the much needed services to children with special needs like those of ours and it is our greatest hope that people would see it the way we do. !!For us it is not about numbers, it is about making a lasting positive change in the lives of the children we serve.!!

Included in our Annual Report is our audited financial statement for the year 2014, which reflects the financial results of the past year and as well as the current financial position of the organisation. You will see that our organisation has not been immune to the prevailing economic conditions worldwide. !!Fewer and fewer individuals and companies have disposable income available for donations to charitable organisations, which was reflected in our organisation running at a loss for the first time since its inception in 2005. We are, however, grateful that the shortfall was covered by our surplus carried over from the previous financial year and can still report a growth within our projects.!!Fundraising in difficult economic times has not been easy; however we remain committed to exploring new ideas and ways towards sustainability. The Fundraising team do their best to ensure that the organisation receives the necessary funding and exposure. Their jobs are not easy yet they continue to keep their heads up with a positive spirit.!!Through the generous support of individuals, Corporates, Trusts and Foundations; both financially and in kind, we believe as an organisation that we will continue to grow and positively impact lives of vulnerable children.! !On behalf of the Management Board, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the management team and every staff member, volunteer and donor for their contribution over the past year. The precious gift of your time, skills, donations and assistance of any kind is graciously received and much appreciated.!

!!The re-registration of our Cluster Foster Care Scheme was finalised in March this year, and we are now running successfully for a third year since our initial registration. Our three Cluster Foster Homes provide a short term place of safety and full time foster care for up to 18 children. ! !Home of Hope has welcomed three little girls to our homes during the year and two siblings were reunited with their family. Our children are doing very well and we are continuing to strive to provide the best care possible and to meet their individual needs. This could not have been done without many private practitioners who have given, and continue to give up their time to help us with various therapies and services. We would like thank all of them for their support. ! !We are always so excited when our children achieve beyond expectation and are truly astounded by their strength and perseverance. The annual assessments conducted by the Educational Psychologist, Dr Lyn Thijsse in November 2014 once again showed that our children are continually making scholastic progress. We are so proud of them! ! !This year we added another member to our team. The Board appointed and authorised Mr Oneness Mubayi in the capacity of Social Auxiliary Worker. His role is to assist Bianca Breytenbach, the Social Worker, with running the cluster foster homes, which affords her more time to expand the Home of Hope MAPS Project and in effect support more caregivers in the surrounding communities. ! !

!In order to maintain support, education and accountability within our team, weekly meetings are held with the foster parents. There are also opportunities for the foster parents to participate in workshops offered by the Western Cape Forum for Intellectual Disability (WCFID) which empowers them to care for our children more specifically to their needs. ! !Our older children come together every month to discuss any situations that may arise within the cluster foster homes or matters that they are concerned about. We have had the privilege of hosting two psychology students from Germany who completed their internship here. They focussed on creating and implementing sustainable programs that address emotional intelligence, mastery and impulse control, aspects that some of our children struggle with. We have partnered with another organisation, allowing one our teenage girls to join a Youth Development Program in preparation for her leaving the home in the future. ! !We continue to build an ongoing working relationship with the Department of Social Development and various other Non-Governmental Organisations to ensure that our children and foster families follow the right procedures according to law and that our children are optimally cared for.! !

!"Safety and security don't just happen; they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear." – Nelson Mandela!

MENTOR AND PARENT SUPPORT PROGRAM!!Our Mentor and Parent Support program was implemented on the 1st of August 2013 and has been growing successfully ever since.! ! ! !The vision of the MAPS Program is the following: We see an interactive, practical and person centred group program that runs on "grass roots level" which shares information, empowers and motivates caregivers of children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, by helping them to become ambassadors for positive change in their communities.!!! !The purpose of the MAPS program is to offer support to families whose child/children suffer from FASD or other neuro-developmental problems similar to those of FASD. This is achieved by running a 12 session support group and regular home visits by the mentor. The task of the mentor is to:!•  Support the family!•  Give advice on parenting!•  Be a resource on FASD!•  Network with community leaders, organizations and local schools in the

interest of improving support to our families and children.! !We have grown to such an extent that we are now supporting 14 adoptive and foster families on a regular basis. We have successfully completed our first support group sessions in a neighbouring community, with a group of 15 foster mothers. These foster mothers most often care for more than one affected child and they have very little, if any, support or resources. From this group, we have identified and successfully enrolled two children in our special education school and employed one of the foster mothers to work at Home of Hope. !!The feedback we received back from these mothers was very encouraging and once again reminded us just how big the need is for programmes like MAPS.!!!

!A Masters study with the aim of looking at the utilisation of support groups by non-biological caregivers of FASD children was completed by a member of the Home of Hope Staff. The study found that those who participated in such support groups were more skilled at parenting and disciplining their children. !!It also found the emotional support received by participants during the group sessions to be a key factor in helping alleviate the heavy burden on these caregivers of raising children with FASD. !!Furthermore, the participation of caregivers in these support groups afforded them the opportunity to work through unresolved past issues, fostered within them a more positive outlook on life which lead to an overall improvement in their parenting skills. ! !We hope to offer more support group sessions during 2015/2016. It is our aim to implement the program in other communities and provinces in order to empower community members and professionals to render support services more efficiently in areas where it is needed. Recruitment of participants is done in conjunction with the Department of Social Development and other NGO’s who serve clients with this unique challenge. ! !As we continue to build this unique program, we hope to see many more caregivers being equipped and empowered so as to acquire a new sense of hope for the future. !

!Amathemba, Home of Hope’s special needs school, is now in its fifth year and continues to go from strength to strength. Amathemba’s philosophy is based on “cognitive modifiability” and “brain plasticity”. Amathemba’s ethos is that all children no matter what their ‘disability’ have cognition, which when fostered correctly, will supersede labels and limiting expectations that have been placed on them by society.! !Amathemba is guided by the principle that a good education is key to the success of any child’s future. ! !The Western Cape has the highest rate of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the world. FASD is an umbrella term that is used to describe a spectrum of permanent birth defects caused by pre-natal exposure to alcohol. About 62,000-70,000 children are born in South Africa every year suffering from FASD (making it South Africa’s most common birth defect and the country’s leading cause of mental retardation) yet Amathemba continues to be the only school designed to meet the specific needs of children with FASD in the entire continent of Africa. We are therefore very proud of the pioneering work that our staff (and of course our children) do there every day. ! !In addition to the school activities and curriculum, Amathemba provides specific interventions for children with behavioural and emotional issues. Children with FASD have a birth mother who is currently, or has, abused alcohol and so tend to have a very unstable home life. The existence of alcohol often also leads to violence in the home which causes emotional and behavioural problems in the child.!!Educating children with FASD will increase their chances of employment and thus help them to become more valuable members of the community. The aim is for our students to not only become more fulfilled and productive members of society but also become more self aware and controlled and less likely to perpetuate the vicious cycle of substance abuse which leads to FASD.! !Amathemba has both a pre-primary and a primary school campus. Currently Amathemba has five children in its pre-primary campus at 3 Fairbridge Road. We are however currently offering places to another 5 children in the pre-school and eventually we hope to be able to accommodate up to 20 children. Four of our pre-primary children graduated up to the primary school at the start of 2015 and we are very proud of them. !

From 2011 to 2014 we were blessed to have a very successful partnership with West Coast Christian School (WCCS). The time we spent under the wing and guidance of our fiends in WCCS allowed us the time to pilot and perfect our curriculum, teaching methodologies and classroom environment. We were always acutely aware though, that with so many children suffering from FASD, we had to expand in order to reach more children who needed our help. In order to do this we needed to have more physical space to accommodate more classrooms. !!The WCCS had already been so kind to us for so many years allowing us to have two classrooms rent free, despite their own need for the space, so we felt we needed to explore other options rather than further burden the WCCS with our need for growth. When an opportunity arose to rent the upper floor of the local Grace Baptist Church in Parklands we jumped at the opportunity and completed our move in January 2015. !!The move has been a great success. We have been able to add another class which can accommodate up to ten children, allocate proper rooms to our three therapists and reunite our practical class with the rest of the students. We could only have done this through the support and hard work of all our teaching staff.!!A move to a new separate premises means that Amathemba can now apply for independent registration with the Department of Education. This is a big undertaking for Amathemba but we know that everyone involved in Amathemba will rise to the challenge. To start preparing for our new status as an Independent School, in January 2015 our full time therapist Anel Böning was appointed as the new acting school principal. She has done a great job in helping us to transition to our new premises and no doubt will continue to guide us in the months to come.! !Amathemba would never have got this far without the support of WCCS so we want to give a huge thank you to all the staff at WCCS and particularly their (and our) principal Iselle Dorr.! !We would also like to thank the spiritual leader of Grace Baptist Church, Reverend Barry Springhall and his congregation who have welcomed us into their premises with open arms. They have gone even further by encouraging their church members to volunteer with our children in the school and for that we are most grateful.!!In December 2014, Amathemba’s school psychologist Dr Lyn Thijsse evaluated all the Amathemba students. The results have been extremely positive with Dr Thijsse noting that all the children have improved academically and behaviourally. All of us who work with the children and their families have seen the children ‘blossom’ since they joined Amathemba and we can see them now as happier and more confident young people. !!The school was also the subject of an independent external evaluation and the Report which issued in April 2015 was extremely complimentary of the Amathemba and the success it has achieved. ! !

The learning difficulties of two of the children were sufficiently remediated by the end of 2014 to enable them to return to mainstream school in January 2015. This is a great example of how successful the Amathemba program can be. Amathemba now has a total of 33 children in both pre-primary and primary phases.!!Amathemba’s primary school currently consists of three classes which are run by our hardworking teachers and assistants. In 2015 we are aiming to add a fourth class and are now accepting new students. As part of our move to Grace Baptist Church we were able to move the practical class from Fairbridge Road back with the other children which means that in 2015 we will have four classes operating from Grace Baptist Church.! !We expanded the practical class to add two more children bringing that class up to seven children. In 2015 we put a lot of preparation into practical activities that could be done by the vocational class in order to increase their chances of securing employment. We have added to the practical class curriculum more work experience for the older children in order to prepare them for the transition into working life. !!For the older girls we have arranged work experience in a child care centre every Friday. This is helping them to understand responsibility and giving them practical experience in an area of work where they may be able to secure future employment. For the boys we have secured work experience on a lower level (they are younger and lower functioning) at a horse farm helping to groom, feed and care for horses.!!2014 has been a remarkable year for Amathemba and we hope 2015 will be even better as we settle into our new home at Grace Baptist Church. Our aim for 2014 is to continue the successes with our current students and also to expand our classes to reach other needy children and help them to secure an education that suits their unique needs.!

The Professional Training Program was set up in June 2013 to address the lack of training and awareness amongst professionals about FASD. It is run by the Amathemba Project Manager, Aisling Foley.!!The aim of the Program is to develop and operate training workshops and participate at conferences and lectures to professionals and those who work with children and adults with FASD. !!At the moment it seems that FARR (Foundation for Alcohol Related Research) is the only organisation that runs training workshops in the Western Cape. The problem with this however is that workshops are often cancelled as there are insufficient numbers attending.! !It is safe to say that all professionals in the areas such as education, psychology, social work, law, medicine, nursing etc will encounter people with FASD during their working lives. In addition carers in children’s homes, crèches and prison workers will similarly encounter sufferers of FASD.!!2014 !In 2014 the following presentations/workshops were given:!!•  56 Undergraduate students at lectures in UCT!•  14 Honours students at workshop in UCT!•  44 students at a lecture in University of Stellenbosch!•  35 criminal legal aid lawyers from Stellenbosch area!•  13 educators from Westlake Primary!•  34 Western Cape community workers!•  85 Western Cape nurses and clinic supervisors!•  20 Western Cape school nurses! !Home of Hope would particularly like to thank Board members Dr Lyn Kenneth and Rene Carstens, for their help in organising the BANC and Legal Aid presentations respectively.!!As always Home of Hope continues to identify gaps when it comes to caring for and educating people with FASD and tries to meet the need. !!We expect the professional training program to go from strength to strength in 2015.!

!!Home of Hope does not receive any form of funding from the Government; therefore we are solely reliant on the kindness, generosity and support of businesses and individuals as well as our own fundraising efforts to continue generating funds.! !Fundraising in the midst of economic turmoil and the ever weakening Rand is challenging to say the least and even though times continue to be tough, Home of Hope has once again been incredibly blessed in our fundraising efforts during 2014 for which we are extremely grateful. !!We held three large fundraising events; our Annual Golf Day, a Ladies Lunch and a Formal Dinner Dance all of which were wonderfully supported and greatly successful. ! !Golf Day!!Our Golf Day is quickly becoming one of our most successful events and this year was no exception. Held on Friday 16 May at the incredibly beautiful Milnerton Golf Club, our Golf Day was once again greatly enjoyed by all. Was it windy? Oh yes. Was it chilly? Of course. Was it fun? Absolutely! It was a great day all in all. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone; players, sponsors, Golf Club staff and also our own team for together contributing to and ensuring the success of our Annual Charity Golf Day.! !Ladies Lunch!!The Home of Hope ladies lunch has become an institution; an event unparalleled in terms of spirit, fun and frivolity. This year our theme was Bollywood and as usual all the Ladies dressed up to the nines; bejewelled and bedazzled from head to toe, splashes of colour everywhere, henna works of art and beautiful saris. We thank all the beautiful women who came to support us; we thank them for their spirit and generosity without which our Ladies Lunches would not be the exciting events that they are.!!

!Held at the magnificent Rotunda, the Bay Hotel’s beautiful ball room, our former Gala Dinner event was transformed into an evening of fun, games and dancing much similar to the extravagant parties thrown by the Great Gatsby himself. !!There were fabulous prizes up for grabs with scratch and win cards and bingo as well as an exciting auction. One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of a very unique “cup song” by our very own Amathemba children. It was the first time we’ve had some of our older children participate in one of our events and they were absolutely thrilled to be a part of it. We thank everyone who attended for their wonderful support. !

Home of Hope relies on volunteers in the rendering of many services that we would otherwise not be able to offer. From administrative tasks, fundraising, cultural activities, sports, driving, sorting through donations and assisting teachers in our Amathemba School, volunteers continually play an integral role in our organisation. !!We are extremely thankful for our volunteers, for their generous dedication of time, their hard work and commitment, their compassion and generosity which add unspeakable volumes of value to our organisation. !!We wish to thank all our volunteers, both locally and internationally for everything they do for us, without them Home of Hope would not be able to grow our projects or do our work as effectively as we do. !

VOLUNTEERS

DONOR ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND THANKS Home of Hope also received many anonymous donations during the reporting period and we would like to use this opportunity to thank all the people who made donations who wished to remain nameless.
