Learning approach

The classroom based activities and the on-site activities at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne are based on the Bloom’s taxonomy, revised by Anderson and Krathwohl (2001). Included are activities which can be categorised in the cognitive process-dimension, which includes the lower-order thinking (remembering, understanding and applying) and the higher-order thinking (analysing, evaluation and creating) both of which are integral to effective learning. The other dimension of the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy acknowledged in this education kit is the Knowledge Dimension; this includes the category of Factual knowledge & Conceptual knowledge.

Intercultural knowledge and language awareness is explored through the theme of maintaining culture in Italian migrant families. The role of the l’orto (garden) in the life of Italian migrants provided the connection to habits and rituals of the place that they had left and from a practical dimension provided food for the family. The sustainability theme also comes through the way Italians eat seasonally and preserve what they have too much of, nothing is wasted. The relationship between plants and Italian migrants has always been a strong link in their everyday life.

The school based activities will engage with a story called L’orto del nonno (Grandpa’s garden), from the story book the other theme introduced will be La cucina della nonna (Grandma’s kitchen) which will focus on the theme of food and preserving and the story would focus on the theme of seasonal cooking and the importance of preserving food in the Italian culture.

The book is available as a Big Book L’orto del nonno, through the Co.As.It. Resource Centre,189 Faraday St, Carlton. To become a member of the resource library contact: T: 93499022 or www.coasit.com.au for membership details.

The story will also be available in a format appropriate for the interactive whiteboard online at the RBGM website www.rbg.vic.gov.au.

Nonno’s Garden - Italian Program at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne’s Italian program, Nonno’s Garden has been designed to introduce to students the important relationships between plants and people in everyday life in Italy. The program focuses on Italian herbs and vegetables, how they’re grown in Nonno’s garden and put to use in Nonna’s kitchen and herbal remedies. Relevant Italian words are incorporated throughout the program. Activities include working in the kitchen garden and propagating a food plant to grow back at school.

Key elements of the program include:

Kitchen gardenThrough exploring and working in our kitchen garden, students will be introduced to the important concepts of growing fresh, seasonal vegetables in Nonno’s garden. The basic skills of good gardening practice are taught through exploring water conservation and organic gardening methods. Students will explore what’s growing in the garden and discuss what vegetables are used in Nonna’s kitchen. Working in small groups, they will participate in real work in the kitchen garden that can include; planting vegetable seedlings, mulching and watering.

PotStudents will start of their own Italian garden, Nonno style, by propagating Italian food seeds or herb cuttings to take back to school. Some examples of plants used include pea, bean or sunflower seeds, or cuttings of rosemary or lavender.

Herb garden Herbs are a vital part of Italian cooking and Nonna’s herbal remedies. Students will explore using the senses, herbs growing in our herb garden including key Italian herbs such as basil, bay, oregano, garlic, rosemary and sage, and discuss their uses.

WalkThe Italian influence through history, in garden architecture and landscaping will be highlighted on a walk through the Gardens. Students will also explore the adaptations plants have developed to survive a Mediterranean climate, and how these adaptations are also well suited to our climate and water wise gardening.

Activities to support your Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne excursion

The learning approach at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne is to provide hands on, sensory based and child centred learning experiences. The following worksheets can be used pre and post excursion and will prepare students for the experience at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. During the visit to RBGM, there are opportunities for team teaching with the RBGM teacher to incorporate a language focus to the program. Prompt questions and flash cards will be available for use as part of the program to focus students’ attention on particular activities such as identifying particular Italian herbs and plants, the parts of a plant- what we can see and can’t see, sensory activities, plants and their connection with seasons, and design elements of a kitchen garden.

Onsite post excursion extension activity worksheets are included for further exploration of the Herb Garden, , the Kitchen Garden and some of the the architectural features in RBGM. If you would like your excursion to finish at one of these places, please let the RBGM Bookings Office know when you book your program.
