TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2014 Day 12

Forging Relationships for a brighter Future

What enthusiasm has Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign generated amongst Indian engineering firms particu-larly MSMEs? How is the response of the manufactu-ring industry towards this initiative? And, how do you see India’s exports growing in the near future?Anupam Shah: The best as-pect of ‘Make in India’ is its magnetic appeal that it is re-sonating around the world. All the major manufacturers are exploring opportunities arising in India. Until now, the impediments, which had kept these opportunities at shore, are now under the fo-cus of various reforms and policy initiatives to improve manufacturing and exports environment. ‘Make in India’ is the answer to one of the biggest challenges that SMEs face i.e., international bran-ding and promotion. We know how China pushed its manufacturing and exports competitiveness. Thanks to these efforts, China’s GDP is expected to surpass the US by end of this year.

However, for India, there is still a long way to go, because we do not have the option of pursuing such an unnatural path of growth. Our founda-tions are more organic and have emerged out of our in-herent qualities and vision of

democracy upholding econo-mic freedom.

It is the global branding, which is the need of the hour. For instance, I would like to highlight the findings from our recent EEPC India study on the pumps and valves sec-tor. It revealed that although China is far ahead of India in almost all the markets, as the most competitive supplier, India has managed to emerge itself as the most competitive in the mentioned countries and products. (Ref to table)

It is not only in the pumps and valves industry, we are also observing increasing growth in the machine tool segment. Indian machine tools manufacturers have started giving tough competi-tion in the Chinese markets to their Chinese counterparts themselves. Thus, it is quite reasonable to assume that In-dian engineering products remain un-branded in many parts of the world. Hence, ‘Make in India’ has brought most encouraging avenues for SMEs in the field of engineering.

SMEs would definitely want to utilize this momentum and we are hopeful that the cur-rent government will not let this momentum subside until we achieve our targets.

How will IESS IV lay empha-sis on the ‘Make in India’

campaign?Shah: IESS IV is the only ‘In-dian Show’ and the flagship event of the Ministry of Com-merce & Industry, Govern-ment of India, showcasing ‘Made in India’ brand glo-bally. Its main objective is to display latest Indian enginee-ring products and capabilities on a global platform. IESS IV will leverage the extensive partner network of EEPC In-dia and various central and state government agencies. The event is promoted exten-sively among foreign govern-ment agencies, trade promo-tion bodies and other interna-tional trade promotion bodies to achieve global exposure.

The show focuses on chal-lenges that the manufacturing industry is facing and brin-ging international stakehol-ders on a single platform to explore and highlight emer-ging opportunities out of them. The event is hosting UK’s Smart City Project De-legation and Smart City Sum-mit that are among the most current theme under ‘Make in India’ initiative. In effect, IESS IV by its very nature will promote ‘Make in India’ to global audience.

How will the show help for-eign companies that are loo-king to invest in India miti-gate risks and create sour-cing opportunities from In-dian companies?Shah: Apart from being reco-gnized as one of the major sourcing event in India, it also enjoys the backing of Minis-try of Commerce, Govern-ment of India. It is essentially a partnership program that aims at developing relation-ships and collaborations in the field of promotion of manufacturing, international investments and joint ventures. It is the largest con-fluence of international dele-gation under one roof for the manufacturing industry.

Moreover, it creates a well informed environment for business decision making

process through transparent trade facilitation procedures through EEPC India and Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

The exhibition hosts dele-gation and acts as one stop shop for their sourcing requi-rements. It is worth mentio-ning that the venue of the event has also been chosen in the commercial capital of In-dia. International delegates have an opportunity to explo-re further, plan their business trips in and around this regi-on. Here, it is important to note that the region surroun-ding Mumbai, Gujarat and Maharashtra has acquired global attention for Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. KPMG has accorded this pro-ject among 100 most innova-tive mega projects. The corri-dor has also attracted buzz of investment activities recently, which will be much of interest to the international buyers and professional visitors.

Thus, in many ways, for-eign companies will be able to avail this unique opportunity to forge rewarding partner-ships with Indian counter-parts and strengthen future cooperation.

India is now a partner coun-try for one of the biggest engineering show – Hanno-ver Messe. What positive impact of this partnership do you see on the Indian ex-

ports in terms of attitude towards made in India pro-ducts and solutions, accep-tance in the global market, etc?Shah: If Hannover Messe is the biggest engineering shows, India is the biggest en-gineering opportunity. It is the top industrial technology expo and a leading dialogue hub for the industry and government leaders orga-nized by Deutsche Messe AG. The event enjoys outstanding reputation as a source of products, technology and know-how. This makes it the ideal place to promote natio-nal economic interests by strengthening a country’s market standing in inter- national circles.

When India was a partner country at Hannover Messe 2006, it led to generation of business over $1.3 billion. In 2015 too, the special status of the ‘Partner Country’ at Han-nover Messe will automati-cally provide a high-profile platform for the presentation of our innovative industrial and business achievements and its fitness for the future. The resulting bilateral dialogues between the indus-trial and political communi-ties will open doors at every level. Moreover, this opportu-nity will create unrivalled opportunities for scientific endeavors, businesses and technologies.

With the display of new technologies and apt topics for conferences, the India Engineering Sourcing Show (IESS)

is expected to set new benchmarks in the industry. Chairman, EEPC India, Anupam Shah believes that the

‘Make in India’ campaign has generated enthusiasm amongst Indian SMEs. He shares his views on the same.
