BIOTECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT : Just as “IT” was referred to as “India‟s Tomorrow” by our former Prime Minister Sri Atal
Bihari Vajpayee, Biotechnology may indeed become “Bharat‟s Tomorrow”. Biotechnology has made significant advances in recent years and emerged as a frontline area of research and development, with an overwhelming impact on the society. Each new achievement is
expanding its horizons. Once Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam shared his experience when he was in Anna University, Chennai. He said that a patent was obtained for a new molecule discovered from an herb as an anti cancer drug. This came out of the fusion of two great
minds. One was a Biotechnologist and the other was a traditional siddha medical practitioner. The human genome project has opened new frontiers in medical fields with application
in gene therapy; more than 100 new breakthroughs Bio pharmaceuticals, vaccines and new technologies have helped million of people world wide. So at a very appropriate time to disseminate information in the area of Biotechnology, we have started B.Tech.
(Biotechnology)course during the academic year 2002-2003 and M.Tech. Biotechnology during the academic year 2009-2010.
Our Department has been approved by Anna Universtiy, Tirunelveli as the Centre for Research in the year 2011. Dr.Anant Achary and Dr.T. Nagarajan has been recognized as
Research supervisors for Ph.D. Programme.
Department of Biotechnology has received grant from DRDO for three scientific
projects. One is on going and the other two have been successfully completed. It has also received grant from Tamil Nadu State Council Science and Technology (TNSCST) in the year 2008 and 2009. Department of Biotechnology has also received grant from AICTE, New Delhi
Under Research Promotion Scheme for the year 2010-11. The department has also received a grant from AICTE in 2011 to organize National level conference.
In the year 2004, this Department was ranked Second among the Engineering Colleges affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which are offering Biotechnology Course according to a survey report conducted by A.C. Neilson group on behalf of Sun T.V. AS
per BIOSPECTRUM (a Cyber Media Magazine) Survey in the year 2008, the department has achieved 9th Place for infrastructure facilities and 14th place in overall performance among private institutions providing Biotechnology education in India. Department of Biotechnology
has been accredited by NBA, AICTE, New Delhi for three years from 2009-2012. So far, we have invested about 7.5 crore rupees on the Infrastructure Development for various Laboratories in Biotechnology viz. Cell Biology,Instrumental Method of Analysis, Molecular

A Digital Library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats (as opposed to print, microform or other media) and accessible by computers. The digital
content may be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks. A digital library is a type of information retrieval system.
In our College, Digital Library has been built up in 14400 sq.ft. with three sections of calm AC Reading Hall. Our library has a collection of 58490 volumes of books and 12449 titles in a variety of Engineering subjects. Our Journal section has a collection of 85 national
journals and 71 International Journals. Library is computerized and book return, renewal transactions are done through barcode scanners.
/30/
Our Digital section has Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz storage server, 1.64 TB storage capacity and 15 nos. of Flat monitor systems with CD writer, Pen drive and internet connectivity. Electronics Journals like IEEE online, Science Direct Online, J-Gate online are subscribed for
students‟ access. Nearly 4547 nos. of CD-Rom resources are stored in the storage server and Online journals resources of 200 journals are fully stored and made access to all our users through Intranet facility. Our college maintains Online Video course programmes. Online
Video programme are received from IIT. We maintain EDUSAT live program, received through Anna University. As our college is a member of DELNET, we receive books for all engineering disciplines through Inter Library Loan. The SC/ST Book Bank collections are
available in our library to meet the demands of SC/ST students. 1. Strict silence should be maintained in the Library and the reading room.
2. Each student will be provided with library cards on the following basis I Year - 2 Cards, II Year - 3 Cards III Year - 4 Cards, IV Year - 5 Cards
3. Open-access system is followed. 4. Students should not carry any book (or) printed matters into the Library. 5. Students can have the books for two weeks (i.e. 14 days) from the date of
issue. 6. Books will be issued and returned in all working days.
