SGGW/WULS – THE BEST CHOICE!
3
Hello there!
If you’re reading this Guide, it means that you’re
considering coming to SGGW for your Erasmus, or
you already made that decision and we will meet
each other soon! Either way, you can be sure that
Erasmus in Warsaw University of Life Sciences will be a life-changing experience, something that you will
remember forever. And we – ESN SGGW – will do everything to make your time here even better!
What is ESN SGGW you may ask? We are a part of the biggest student organization in Europe – Erasmus
Student Network. Our main goal is to support exchange students, make mobility accessible for everyone
and to make the voice of European youth matter.
But on daily basis we’re just group of volunteers who love meeting people from all around the globe and
our mission is to make your time in Poland unforgettable. Don’t forget that we’re always here for you, if
you need a help, advice or just someone to talk to.
So, are you ready for having the time of your life?
ESN SGGW TEAM
My name is Mariam Mindiashvili. I’m from Gerogia. This is my first
Erasmus and I hope it won’t be the last. I consider myself lucky
because my Erasmus was awesome in any cases! Before arrival in
Warsaw, I was very worried, I was thinking how things will be, but
now I’m so glad and proud about everything what happened to me
here. Firstly, I want to say great thanks for our ESN members! For
supporting, helping, organizing best events and for being our friends!
Can’t imagine how things would be without my mentor, Aleksandra!
^_^ I’m very delightful from the city itself, Warsaw is amazing! 1 year
ago I wanted to come in Poland but with another program, now I’m
Erasmus here, in an amazing University! I’m pretty sure that our
university is the best in Warsaw and not only. I had different subjects
from different faculties, which made my study more interesting than
at my home university. I was expecting that studying abroad in
English would be very difficult, but as you see it was quite easy, I’m not sure that this is in every university for every
Erasmus student, but I hope so! My scholarship was pretty cool especially in Poland, cuz it’s quite cheap all in all!
I consider myself lucky because my mentor, my roommate, my university, city, Erasmus student are so cool! I’m
very glad for that amazing opportunity! I know that this memory will be one of the best in my life! <3
Mariam, Georgia summer semester 2015/2016
FIRST STEPS
4
1. Your mentor (if you have one) will pick you up
from the airport/bus station/railway station,
you will buy tickets and go to the dorm or
your flat/hostel. You can buy tickets with
student discount when you have POLISH
student ID only, so for now – you have to buy
normal one. You can buy ticket on some bus
stations, buses/trams or at a metro station in
special ticket machines or in kiosk.
2. For those, who don’t have a Mentor to help
you with registration in the dormitory: you
should go to your dorm and say that you are
an Erasmus student. They don’t speak English
but they understand the word “Erasmus” and
they know what to do, so for sure you will
manage. Just give your passport or ID to this
lady in the reception and she should give you
a key to your room. You need to go to
administration office too, fill some forms and
give them your photo. It is necessary to get
“Dorm card”. Administrations work from
8AM until 4PM (until 8PM on Thursdays) , so
if you arrive after this time, just go there next
working day. REMEMBER! If you arrive few
days before semester starts, you have to pay
for these few days. Receptionist will tell (or
more possibly – write) you how much exactly.
3. You should also go to International Relations
Office (Biuro Współpracy Międzynarodowej)
right after your arrival. You will find it on the
Old Campus, building number 8, room 20. It is
open from 10AM am to 12AM and 1PM to
3PM, from Monday till Thursday.
4. If you are non-EU citizen, you will have to also
visit Ursynów Distrct Office to sign up some
papers (you can ask about this procedure in
International Relations Office). It would be the
best to go there in group with someone who
speaks Polish, to make things easier and
faster. To get to the Ursynów District Office
you can take bus 148 (direction -> Terminal
Autokarowy) from SGGW Rektorat 01 bus
stop. You can also take bus 503 (direction ->
Natolin Płn) or 185 (direction -> Ursynów
Zachodni) from Ursynów Płn 01 bus stop.
5. Probably now you are starving and your fridge
is empty. There is one small shop in Dendryt
dorm, it’s called Szopik. One more shop near
our campus is in Limba Dorm, right next to the
Pharmacy. Another one is next to Circle K gas
station, it’s called Żabka. If you want to buy
more things, you can go to Biedronka
(supermarket), E.Leclerc (hypermarket) or
Auchan (hypermarket). Check out maps in
section “Our campus”, they might be very
useful.
6. In a mall where E.Leclerc is placed, you can
also exchange your money, buy some plates,
pots, clothes, and almost anything you could
need. Same thing goes for Auchan.
7. Just go and explore Warsaw! It is really nice
place and it gives you many possibilities for
spending your free time!
What to take list:
health insurance document
3 ID-sized photos
Money in cash (minimum
approx. 300 zł for the
beginning; if Polish currency
is not available in your
country, you can change your
money on the airport but you
should take Euros or Dollars)
OUR CAMPUS
5
SGGW Campus is well known for its unique
atmosphere and great surroundings. If you want to
check it by yourself, take a look at this short video:
https://goo.gl/LnNwxo
Looks pretty nice, does it? (:
The “Old” part of campus is where Economics,
Humanities and Production Engineering Departments
are placed, as well as Interntional Relations Office (no.
1 on a map below) and ESN SGGW Office (no. 2 on a
map below). “New” part of our campus contains all
the other departments’ buildings, dormitories,
Library, Sport Center with sports halls and swimming
pool, small grocery shops and student’s club/café.
Almost every department has its own canteen, where
students can buy a meal for around 10-20zł. There’s
also one canteen in Dendryt dorm (no. 4 on the map
below) and one in Crystal Hall (no. 9 on a map above).
For most of the time you can observe security cars
driving around, to provide the highest level of safety
on our campus. Although you have to remember, that
there are also rules, that our students are obligated to
respect (eg. drinking alcohol on the campus area is
officially prohibited).
The regulation statements can be found here:
https://goo.gl/2Qwcrj
In some dormitories there are also small gyms – they
are usually not very big, and the equipment is pretty
basic, but the entrance pass is also usually very cheap.
To get more information in this topic ask your Mentor
or any ESN member, since it might be different for
every dormitory.

SGGW DORMITORIES
7
If you’re our future Erasmus student, you will get an
information about how to apply for a place in SGGW
dormitory from our Erasmus Coordinator. Exchange
students are usually accommodated in one of 8 dorms
situated on the main campus. Those dormitories are
paired into 4 sets:
Adara - Bazyliszek
Cezar - Dendryt
Eden - Feniks
Grand - Hilton.
Those names are painted on the wall of each building
and right next to main entrances, so surely you won’t
miss it.
Each dormitory has a kitchen on every floor, one quiet
study lounge (it’s “Pokój cichej nauki” in Polish – to
get the key, you’ll have to leave your Dorm Card in
Reception) meeting room (where residents may hold
party events) and smoking room.
In one of paired dormitories there is an
Administration (usually the first one from the side of
the campus) and the Laundry room in the other one.
RESIDENT CARD
Having Resident Card is necessary to get a key to your
room. To get it you will need to go to the
Administration of your dormitory (during first check-
in). Remember – ‘your’ Administration is in Feniks if
you live in Feniks or Eden; in Grand if you live in Grand
or Hilton etc – NOT in Limba Dorm!
Remember to take your photo and ID/passport with
you!
ROOMS
There are 2-beds and 3-beds rooms in every
dormitory. 4 rooms are grouped into segment, in each
segment there is a bathroom with toilet, shower and
two washbasins.
Every student room is equipped with fridge, kitchen
cupboards with worktop for making meals, wardrobes
and, of course, beds, desks and shelves.
EQUIPMENT
After checking in you will receive :
- Quilt and pillow
- Pillowcases and bedsheets
- Blanket
- Desk lamp (you’ll have to ask for it)
- Cleaning equipment - broom, scoop, mop and
bucket (from storeroom in a basement – only
if someone else from your segment didn’t
take it before)
In every dorm’s Reception you can rent for a short
term a vacuum cleaner, cooker grille, iron and ironing
board – you’ll just have to leave your dorm card for
that time.
Remember to return every piece of equipment as
soon as you finish using it!
What you’ll need to organise on your own:
- Plates, cups, pots, etc.
- Cutlery
- Electronics (kettle, extension cable, ethernet
cables, router etc.)

timely manner: by the 15th day of each month for the
same month, or by the 25th day of the month if
accommodation began in the middle of the month.
There will be bank account number on the back of the
Resident Card on which you can make
a transfer in bank office (eg. Pekao Bank office on the
Old Campus) or by online transfer.
If you arrive to the dorm before the beginning of the
semester, you’ll have to pay for some nights, right
after you arrive BY CASH – make sure to have some
with you!
KITCHEN
Kitchen is usually open from 6 am to 10 pm.
If you want to use kitchen after 10 pm you might need
to go to Reception and ask for the key.
There are 3 electric cookers, one oven and sink in
every kitchen.
Make sure to clean up everything you left, after you’re
done with cooking!
LAUNDRY
If you want to make a laundry, you have to go to the
Reception of the dormitory where the Laundry room
is placed (in Eden if you live in Eden or Feniks, etc.)
and sign up. Usually it is enough to sign up one or two
days forward.
You don’t need to bring your own detergents. The
cost of one wash is 5,5 zł (+2,5 zł if you want to use an
electric dryer too).
The bedclothes are changed once a month - there will
be information about the exact date and hour hanged
on the entrance door.
VISITS
Residents can have visitors in their room, but any
visits may only take place between 8AM and 10PM.
The visitor must leave a document with a
photography in Reception in order for their visit to be
recorded in the Visitors Register.
Visitors may also stay in the Dorm for the night in a
guest room – the price for one night is 37,80zł for a
place in a triple room or 43,20 in a double room.
Althought you have to go to Main Dorm
Administration in Limba Dorm, in order to book a
place for your visitor.
INTERNET CONNECTION
There are Ethernet outlets in every room (2 in triple
room, 1 in double room), so it is possible to connect
to internet by cable, but surely it’ll be more
convenient to get a Wi-Fi router. Ask your Mentor
what kind of Router can be used in the dorms, to
make sure it will work!
MEETING ROOM
To organize an event in a Meeting Room, you will
have to go to your dorm Administration, fill out a form
(adding a list of guests) and pay 100zł of returnable
deposit. The event can be hold until 10PM. After the
event, or the next day, Reception staff will check if
there are no damages in the room and if it was
properly cleaned up – if everything will be okay, you
will get your deposit back.

Card to the reception staff if asked for it

In Warsaw there are only 2 metro lines, however,
there is a good choice of trams and buses. There are 2
ticket zones (SGGW campus and most of the places
you will be travelling to are in the 1st zone).
Getting from the airport or bus/train station
If you have applied for a Mentor Program, you don’t
have to worry about it. Your Mentor will pick you up
from the airport or bus/train station and take to your
dormitory / flat.
If you’ll choose to get to the Dorm on your own,
getting form the Chopin Airport to SGGW campus is
very easy. In front of the airport take bus no 148 and
take of at SGGW REKTORAT or SGGW BIBLIOTEKA (it’s
about 25 minutes). Then you will already see our
campus and the dorms (have a look at the map of the
campus).
Getting to the city from Modlin Airport is a little bit
more complicated, but we’re sure that your Mentor
will explain it to you clearly!
Tickets
Tickets for buses, trams and metro are the same. You
can buy them in most of the stationeries and buses
and in ticket machines.
How to buy a ticket in a ticket machine? This video
can be useful: https://goo.gl/94KMHa
In Warsaw you’ll probably drive around a lot
(sightseeing, parties etc.) so it is cheaper to buy a
long-term ticket. It’s possible to load it on your
student ID. You can buy it in normal Ticket Machine
(instructions on the screen will guide you). Prices of
long term tickets: 30 days – 55zł, 90 days – 140zł.
After buying it remember to validate it by tapping it to
ticket-puncher (photo below) in a bus/tram or in
Metro’s gates.
Ticket inspectors check the tickets regularly. They
don’t wear any uniforms so you won’t notice if
they’ve just entered the bus/tram/metro. They also
work during the night!
Keep in mind that you can get a fee not only for not
buying a ticket, but also for buying a reduced ticket
while not having your SGGW Student ID with you, for
being in Metro Station without a ticket (it’s already a
ticket zone) and also for causing a bus to stop without
any justified reason.
TYPES OF SHORT- TERM TICKETS:
50 % DISCOUNT TICKETS
(ONLY after receiving student ID from SGGW):
20 minutes ticket for both zones
75 minutes ticket for 1st zone
90 minutes ticket for both zones
24 hours ticket for both zones
24 hours ticket for 1st zone
weekend ticket for both zones
SGGW DORMITORIES

FULL PRICE TICKETS
20 minutes ticket for both zones
75 minutes ticket for 1st zone
90 minutes ticket for both zones
24 hours ticket for 1st zone
24 hours ticket for both zones
weekend ticket for both zones
weekend ticket for both zones for max 5 people
VALIDATING TICKETS
You can enter the bus and tram using any door. When
you get there the first thing you have to do is to
validate your ticket in ticket-puncher.
If you have a valid long term ticket you do not have to
do anything with it in the bus (only first time after
buying it - tap it to the ticket-puncher screen).
In the metro it’s a little different. In the entrance
there are gates with scanners where you have to tap
your ticket in order for gates to open. Use the one
with green arrow.
While getting out you just have to go through the gate
with a green light. You don’t have to use your ticket
again.
TIP! Gate for travellers with the big luggage (it’s also
Emergency Exit-photo below) is usually open,
however, be careful while using it if you don’t have a
luggage - if metro worker, police officer or a city guard
will see it, you can be fined.
SGGW DORMITORIES
12
Next to the gate you can usually find Metro Passes:
Yes – they are for free but THEY ARE NOT THE
TICKETS. Only people who have valid long-term tickets
or disabled/old people who do not need a ticket can
use them.
While travelling by bus take attention to stops “NA
ŻĄDANIE” (on request). The bus doesn’t stop there
unless you press the button. If you wait for a bus at
the bus stop “NA ŻĄDANIE” you have to wave to the
driver as soon as you see the bus. Give the driver
enough time to stop while waving or pressing the
button and do it early otherwise he won’t be able to
stop!
Website http://warszawa.jakdojade.pl/?locale=en can
be useful for you. It shows all of the ways of transport
including numbers of the bus stops. There is also
Jakdojade application for smartphones with Android,
Windows Phone and iOS.
TIP! Check the number of the bus stop really carefully.
Bus stops on different sides of the read have the same
names but different numbers. For example there are 8
bus stops called Ursynów Płn.(next to the campus),
but only from Ursynów Płn. 02 you can get to the Old
Town.
TRAVELLING AT NIGHT
Metro does not work for 24 hours per day – make
sure to check on the app if it still does!
There is also a good choice of night buses. If you are
coming back from the center take bus N37 (it goes to
Ursynów Płn. 03 – it is the stop in front of Pub No.
22.). Although Jakdojade app should guide you well on
your night journeys, if you’ll just type in SGGW
address
Most of the night bus stops are On Request so do not
forget to wave / press the button!
TAXI
Travelling by taxi isn’t the cheapest comparing to the
public transport. The prices start from 2 PLN / 1 km,
depending on the company. But you should be careful
- there are some dishonest Taxi drivers that can try to
cheat you when they notice that you are foreigner.
We advise to use the popular apps, like Uber or Taxify,
since there’s no chance for the driver to charge you
any extra amount of money and getting back from city
center to the campus costs something around 20zł.
CITY BIKES
In the whole Warsaw you can find bikes stations,
where you can rent a bike for really small price. First
20 minutes of the ride is free, next 40 minutes cost
1zł, another hour – 3zł, the third – 5zł etc. Keep in
mind, that if you’ll use a bike for 3 hours you won’t
pay 5 zł, but 9=1zł+3zł+5zł. The best way to save
money is to change bikes oftenly. There are plenty of
stations in the city, so you shouldn’t have any problem
with that. To start using public bikes, you have to
create an account on https://www.veturilo.waw.pl.

TRAVELLING AROUND POLAND

There are many beautiful places in Poland and public
transportation is pretty cheap. Usually Erasmus
people have a lot of free time so you will have great
opportunity to explore our country!
If you want to check how to get to some place, use
this website: http://en.e-podroznik.pl
We would recommend going to:
Kraków
Trójmiasto (Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot)
Masuria
Kazimierz Dolny
Poznań
Wrocław
Lublin
Zakopane
Karpacz
Bus
Buses are maybe not so fast and less comfortable
than planes or trains, but they are also okay. The best
option is choosing PolskiBus. They have modern buses
with Wi-Fi on the board and electrical outlets
http://www.polskibus.com/en
Leo Express is another company that offers a lot of
buses and trains connections AND there’s a special
discount for Erasmus students! You can check the
routes and prices on https://www.leoexpress.com/en
Train
Trains are the most comfortable and usually the
fastest. They are also not expensive, especially when
you buy train ticket more than 2 weeks before your
journey. You can buy tickets online, in ticket machines
or on railway station. Aaaand… students with Polish
student ID have 51% discount!

Car
If you have a driving license, you can rent a car. You

Definitely cheaper is using “Blabla car” – people offer

you can pay and travel with them. Although, to start

First and the most important – weather. Summer can
be quite hot (even 35°C) and winter… well, in 1940 it
was -41°C but usually it is no less than
-15°C. Of course you can expect snow or/and rain and
cold wind so take warm clothes and an umbrella.
Drinking and smoking in public places is illegal as well
as Marijuana - not only smoking but also having it.
Polish people are very hospitable in general. They
might seem a little distanced at the beginning, but
generally they are nice, helpful and friendly. Most of
them don’t speak English, if you need to ask about
something, it is better to ask young people.
Polish cuisine is very good, you should try pierogi
(dumplings) and soups, for example żurek, barszcz
(beetroot soup), pomidorowa (tomato soup, people
love it).
Also Polish cakes are delicious, try bajaderka, sernik
(cheesecake), wuzetka, kremówka, makowiec… If
you are stuffed with Polish food remember that you
can find restaurants with kebab, pizza or fast foods
almost everywhere. Try also Polish alcoholic
beverages! We produce delicious mead (miód pitny),
our Vodka is very famous (and you know, 40%) and
beers, especially from local breweries are just great.
Polish sense of humor is very similar to British, it can
be sarcastic and maybe a little mean sometimes, but I
guess that’s just how we show that we feel
comfortable with someone!

Hello dear friends!
My name is Büşra Deniz.
I study food engineering
in Hacettepe University
in Ankara in Turkey. I am
a senior now and I
would like to tell you
about my almost 5
months Erasmus studies
which was in 2015-2016.
My Erasmus… Entertaining, rough, adventure,
surprising, mature, universal, scientific… I know it
already sounds crazy but, I had to pick out a few
words that will explain my Erasmus experience.
Although, those are not the only ones, just so you
know; you cannot define it, you will know it when you
experience it. Well, let’s get started…
I will start from the very beginning… First, I had to
choose one country, since my grades were great, I
knew that I would be going exactly where I choose. I
had four options; Budapest – Hungary, Napoli – Italy,
Warsaw – Poland, Wroclaw – Poland. After long
conversations with my family and friends who already
experienced Erasmus, I finally picked one. I picked
Warsaw. My friends told me, Polish people like
Turkish people and my friends also told me that they
were very welcomed there and the streets were safe
no matter what time it is and the currency is low and I
would not have financial problems that I might have in
other countries… I also wanted Warsaw because in
winter semester, the weather is really cold over there
and I like cold weather. Anyways, here it comes to
paper work and deciding how to get Warsaw? I was
under the influence of the movie which I like at that
time (the movie made me want to go to Prague
desperately), I also wanted to discover Europe… I
bought a ticket to Prague from fly UIA. It was
connected flight from Istanbul to Kiev and after
Prague. I also bought bus ticket from Prague to
Warsaw. I booked a hostel in Prague for 2 nights. I
packed and so on. I do not know how you would feel
but it felt like my heart was going to stop. I do not
take it strange because it was my first journey in
abroad for such a long time. As a young, Muslim girl
who wears scarf, I was a bit scared, I do not know why
but I think I was judgmental about the culture which I
had very little idea.
Farewell Ankara!
I arrived in Prague. I exchanged my money in the
airport :/ Don’t do that! I could not buy bus ticket
from airport to metro station because I did not have
coins. (Don’t worry I won’t tell you all the steps but
the memories which I find cute and they deserve to
be told.) Nice lady, who barely speaks English, I mean
barely! She and her daughter helped me to buy my
ticket. They also told a man to guide me to the
station. I felt very lonely and desperate, what would I
do in the city? What if all the people were like this -
not speaking English well? While I was fighting with
my thoughts I found myself in hostel! I did it. I left my
luggage and took the city map. Adventure time! First
day I decided to visit old town. Even though I had the
map, I asked like hundred times for directions, an old
lady tried to teach me Czech! It was so funny. I saw
two hijabi girls walking on the Street. I went next to
them and met. They were Indonesian. We talked and
we literally walked all through Prague all together in
those 2 days… I still talk to them and they invite me to
Indonesia. I am thinking of going Indonesia and
surprise the girls one day. In third day, during the visit
of national library I met a lady from Philippines but
married with an Italian man and living in the USA. We
actually met through her beautiful two-year-old
daughter, Anna. We went to Lennon Wall together
and had lunch in an Asian restaurant. My first time,
tasting Asian food. After meal, we said goodbyes and
she mentioned that I have an open door in USA
whenever I want from then on. I picked my luggage
from hostel and walked all the way to bus station,
breathing and full of hopes. (Prague is really small, I
never used transportation in 3 days except my first
arrival from airport to center.)
Well well… I took the bus to Warsaw! I forgot to
mention one very important thing! The university’s
ESN organization arranged a mentor for me,
Aleksandra. She offered to pick me up from the bus
station. My bus was a little late than I told her, I still
feel the feeling that I made her waiting for such a long
time early in the morning… Anyways, she picked me,
bought me a daily bus ticket, took me to dorm and we
settled down in my room. She was very kind and I
started to like this whole Erasmus thing. You
remember what I mentioned in the beginning, my
fears and so… They just disappeared in a second. I
EXTRA: ERASMUS DIARY

knew that she liked me back as I liked her. It was the
very first relief I had. She had to go to work but, we
arranged a meeting. After work she took me to
shopping and city center. During shopping I was
introduced ‘our’ market; Biedronka. You might have
heard many things about Biedronka but, you cannot
imagine what kind of amazing and funny memories i
have in the way of Biedronka, Ursynow. At night, she
and I had my first Polish dinner, Pierogi. Turkish
people would recognize Pierogi from ‘Mantı’. It was
quite nice. We had walk in old town and she left me in
the dorm. That time I didn’t have a roommate so I was
alone, I was tired, I immediately slept. Next day I was
alone again, I decided to discover what was around
and my first getting lost case! I was lost, I couldn’t find
my way to dorm, not even with the navigation in my
phone! Yes, I know… I have a problem finding my way.
My second beautiful memory occurred. Young polish
lady, who does not speak English first tried to give me
directions than she changed her mind and gave me a
free bus ticket which would take me back dormitory
of SGGW. I was grateful that I met such nice people…
On the other hand, I was concerned… I noticed not so
many people speak English in Warsaw. I don’t mean
young people and couple of old people. I tried to
speak with a few cashiers, drivers, people on the
Street but, out of one or two, the other ones just said
‘nie’ and walked away. Thoughts came again, telling
me I would be alone and bored because of language
problems… I tried to calm myself down because, I
didn’t even know the rest of the Erasmus students. It
would change when I meet new people. It actually
did! There was a problem in the arrangement of
dormitories. I saw a post in our Facebook group.
French girls wanted to change their rooms with other
people who are not French. There was a meeting in
front of our dormitory ‘Grand’. (The rest of the
meetings would take place in front of Grand until the
end of Erasmus) I said why not! I want to know about
other cultures and this opportunity is wonderful. I
went to meeting and I met lots of French, Turkish,
Indian people. After that meeting, nothing was the
same anymore! I joined meetings with French girls
and we got closer. We arranged appointments and
trips to other areas of Warsaw and also other cities. I
felt they were my best friends of Erasmus. They still
are… I thought they would see me strange because I
wore scarf but, they did not! We talked about
everything, religion, science, politics, everything… It
was a great opportunity because, most of the people
in western countries think Muslims are terrorists and
so on. It is sad but I think I represented my country
and my religion really well during Erasmus. It taught
me one thing, if you are good, reasonable and kind to
people, they will see the good in you and treat you in
that way… We wouldn’t be able to share our rooms
with French girls but, we had a great friendship. I did
not mention French male friends because, I do not
prefer to hang out with boys. However, they were
kind and understanding too… Good news was we
were classmates in most of the subjects.
Days past and I got closer to Turkish friends too. It was
expensive to cook by myself… The Turkish people who
lives across the bathroom and me agreed to shop and
cook together. By the way during first week or week
and a half, I did not consume any meat products
except fish. I couldn’t find halal meat so I didn’t eat
random meat sold in supermarket. (It changed when I
first went to a mosque in Warsaw. I was going to the
mosque every Friday to perform prayer with the rest
of Muslims. They gave me couple of advices about
halal meat and where I could find it.)
Since I mentioned bathroom. You need to know about
it. I shared a bathroom (a toilet, a shower, two
lavatories) with 10 people including me. Don’t get
surprised! It was one of the best dorms in Warsaw
because, most of them are either so expensive or not
hygienic. We also had a kitchen in the floor. It was not
hard to live. Although I thought how would I use a
bathroom which is also used by other 8 strange men.
It was not that hard. Like I said, the people that I
shared the bathroom were kind and they knew about
my sensitiveness they did not disturb me in any kind
of matter. I was lucky. Cooking together did not work
out so well after few weeks because the Turkish
people I share my food were living upside down. We
were literally not having breakfast and eating dinner
at 10 pm to 3 am (by the way, they close the kitchen
at 10 pm, if you are like us, you have to give your ID to
the reception and get the key). We decided to split
and my eating habits went terrible after that. I am not
proud of that but what you would do if you lived in a
dormitory in a foreign country. It’s enough about the
EXTRA: ERASMUS DIARY
25
food. If you know where are Biedronka and E. Leclerc
and how to cook, you’ll work it out.
Let’s come to city! Warsaw was quite big and the air
was really clean. You could inhale very clean oxygen
and it is one of the things i miss in Ankara. The
transportation was easy and cheap if you have 3
months card. Every bus stop has current lists of buses
and their stops. You can download the app jakdojade.
It will help you a lot! Metro was the same as I was
used to in Ankara. Although the language is difficult to
pronounce you will get used to it even though you
cannot spell the words. Old town is not the actual old
town. After the World War II, Warsaw was destroyed
by Nazi army. It is quite sad story if you travel around
Europe not only in Poland, you will hear terrible things
related to World War II. It was a shock for me during
my trip in Prague. Where was I left? Warsaw old town
was rebuilt by the foundations of Russian. It looks like
old town and you can sense the smell of historic
architecture. I liked the city. As my friends told me the
city was safe in my point of view. No one intend to
harm me even when I was on Street at 2 am. There
were lots of drunk people but, if you push them away
they just go. It must be because the beer is really
cheap in Poland. Cheaper than most of the food
items. Not in Poland, when i was in Prague, people
were joking that the beer was cheaper than water! I
cannot tell much about the city it depends how you
look. If you like green, parks, clean air and also a big
capitol city Warsaw is one of them. If you like small
towns, traditional clothes, bazaars selling home made
products, you would probably not choose Warsaw.
About food I cannot tell it was magical. I did like polish
food but there not so many I can tell. I do not know is
it because I am Turkish but, I prefer Turkish food and
recommend it also. There were Kebab restaurants all
over Warsaw and it is quite common in Europe. I tell
you my friend it has nothing to do with kebab! It is
something else. It looks like ‘Döner’ but, it is not
kebab (everytime I say ‘my friend’ it reminds me
Indian people in Italy). You will get used to seeing
kebab is sold at every quarter of Warsaw. Chinese
restaurants are quite okay and cheap for a student
who wants to eat healthy. If you are lazy and want to
feel full like insane, there is one pizza restaurant
across the campus and also gas station. You can
always call there; they have free service to your dorm.
By the way, it would be nice to tip! Don’t forget it,
sometimes they charge you automatically don’t get
surprised! The percentage of the tip depends from
country to country, keep in mind…
Now I want to tell you about trips. All of us must have
had this urge to discover new cities, new cultures,
meeting new people and so on. My first trip was to
Prague like I told in the beginning. After meeting with
French people, we arranged second trip to Gdansk. I
wondered Baltic sea and I joined them. (After putting
my bare foot in Baltic sea, it was cold and after I got
flu which would last until the end of Erasmus!) It was
small, cute city. You should see Westerplatte. Third
was ESN organization’s to Krakow. I didn’t mention
ESN earlier because I did not like the events so much.
Most of the events were arranged in night clubs. I
don’t say people who wants to party that shouldn’t. I
just thought the meeting and getting to know each
other for the first time shouldn’t be in a night club
which is a noisy like hell. It should have been in a cafe
or even on the grass of campus… Anyways, I joined
ESN this time because, they offered to visit Salt mine,
Auschwitz- Birkenau (which made me cry all the way
back to Warsaw), old town guided tour and that was
all I think. The rest was again partying hard, drinks and
so on. They were quite fond of drinking alcohol, more
than I imagined. However, the French people were
not that fond of alcoholic drinks, this was one of the
features of them that I like. We used to arrange tea
parties in the dorm and have meals all together in
cafes. Before forgetting ESN arranged one great
dinner (Eurodinner). I have to admire, it was fun. In
the dinner people from all over the World came
together and shared the food especial to their
country. I also cooked ‘Tarhana soup’.
Here it comes Christmas holiday. I had almost 20 days
off because of Christmas. I decided not to hurry like
others, they wanted to visit almost all of the countries
in Europe. I want to pick one country and visit it while
feeling it. I picked Italy. It was one of the countries I
wonder the most. We went to Rome with two Turkish
people and stayed there for 2 nights after Rome we
split and I continued with Florence- Pisa (It was a daily
trip. I decided my days in Florence were too long so, I
went to Pisa.)- Florence- Venice- Milano- Bologna-
Katowice- Warsaw. You might ask how much that 11
days trip costed to me. It is not much. Believe me! If I
EXTRA: ERASMUS DIARY
26
decided to eat junk food all the time and not spend so
much Money on gifts and did not want to enter all
touristic places it would cost much less than.
However, I am happy with it. I spend no Money to
public transportation in city center except Milano.
(Only from bus station and from airport or vise versa.)
Milano is big and expensive, the hostel which I stayed
was far from the center. I cannot tell how I felt during
Christmas trip. I was happy with my decisions and I
thought that I could do everything by myself
(remember, it was my first journey away from my
parents!). When I turned back to Warsaw, normal life
started again. Exams, presentations, paper work and
flight ticket back to Turkey.
I cannot say I had a great scientific experience and I
learned a lot about my major in university. However, I
learned a lot about life, about people, about myself. I
saw the real me living in me. I decided what I want
and who I want to become, what kind of life I want
and deserve. I collected memories which gave me life
lessons and I will keep them with me whether they
are worse or best.
Not yet. I cannot finish my words without mentioning
my roommate. You know, I did not have a roommate
for a long time but she came finally. I was staying in a
double room. My roommate was a nice polish lady
who speaks English fluently. I cannot tell how happy
was I when I first met her. She was exactly the kind
that I want to share my room with. Although she was
quite Christian and practicing her religion seriously,
we got along well. I respected her manners and she
did the same to me. She never complained about my
five times prayers during the day or my scarf
sensitivity. She invited me over to her beautiful house.
I met his father. We had dinner altogether and I
served Turkish coffee to them. (I hope they liked it.) I
also shared funny traditional stories about Turkish
coffee. (The one with the groom comes to ask a hand
of bride and the one with 40 years.) She took me a
long walk in the forest with her dog. I trusted her and
she trusted me. Although her father was questioning
everything (The things belong to Ottoman Empire
culture not practiced in Turkish Republic anymore.), I
tried to make everything clean as much as I could. In
the end, he gave us a ride back to dorm with his car. I
still remember those days just like yesterday. I give
her my best in this life and for the next life after
death. My doors are all open to her when she wants
to visit Turkey.
Anyways. That is almost everything. I made it look like
a super experience but, there were hard times. I had
rough times close to end of my Erasmus experience. I
was sick for 4 months (strange flu) and I also missed
my family and things got complicated with friends. I
was looking forward to leave Warsaw as soon as I can.
I was bored. I wanted to graduate desperately but
thinking of the lectures I have to be successful in
Turkey made me a bit aggressive. The weather was
cold beyond my imagination. Friends were leaving
Warsaw one by one and I got bored eventually. I was
my own driving force to turn everything up- side
down. I recommend you to stay calm… Final thing that
make me really angry was the dormitory. They did not
give any information about when we should leave the
dorms at the end of semester so, I bought a ticket on
late February. Then, they told me that if I want to
stay, I have to pay extra as a guest. (Which would cost
me a lot!) I had to buy a new ticket instead and
wanted to leave not to expense more.
I finally arrived in Ankara on fifth of February. My
older brother, sister- in- law, younger brother and
mother picked me up from the airport. I cried all the
way home. It felt like leaving a movie theater, like I
watched a movie and I was the leading actor. I did not
guess was it a dramatic or comedy movie but now
every time I remember, I just feel different. Part of me
was in Warsaw and living almost 5 months in Warsaw
made who I am in the present. There are things that I
miss so much; meeting with great friends (French
girls, my beautiful mentor, my cute roommate…),
living on my own and travelling around Europe, there
are things that I regret; making friendships with the
people which I don’t want to see right now and being
in the places which are not suitable for my belief and
lifestyle and so on. If you ask me ‘Do you wish you
didn’t have these memories that you regret?’ I would
be saying; no. The memories I regret are mine and
they will lead my way. I also might not want to
experience the memories I liked then. They are just
memories, as you will all understand.
It will be almost a year from the very first day that I
left Ankara for Erasmus. Now, I am writing these
sentences, thinking, reliving… It would not be
appropriate finishing without thanking to my special

friend who gave me an opportunity to share my
Erasmus story.
Thank you all for reading this. I wish you not an
amazing nor a horrible Erasmus but the one will also
lead your way in life. Take care! Don’t forget to have
fun in your way!
