Full-colorthree-dimensional display based on computer-generated holography and

spatiotemporal division multiplexing

(1.Center for Optical Research and Education, Utsunomiya University, Japan, 2.Technology

Research Institute of Osaka Prefecture, Japan)

Biography:

Toyohiko Yatagai received the BE and DE degrees in applied physics from the University of Tokyo, in 1969 and

1980, respectively. From 1970 to 1983 he was with the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Japan,

where he worked on optical instrumentation, computer-generated holography and automatic fringe analysis.

He moved to University of Tsukuba as a Professor of Applied Physics in 1983. He is now a Director of Center for

Optical Research and Education at Utsunomiya University. His current research interests include optical

computing, optical measurements, holography, and spectral optical coherence tomography for biological

applications. He received Optical Research Award from the Japan Society of Applied Physics in 1978 and Denis

Gabor Award from SPIE in 2017. He is a member of Optical Society of Japan, a fellow of OSA, SPIE and Japan

Society of Applied Physics. He is 2015 President of SPIE. He is the author of 10 books and more than three

hundred academic papers in applied optics.

Abstract:

A basic spectral relation between a 3-Dobject and its 2-D diffracted wavefront has been derived by interpreting

the diffractioncalculation in the 3-D Fourier domain. Information on the 3-D diffracted object is clearly

understood by usingthis relation. After the derivation, a method for obtaining the Fourierspectrum that is

required to synthesize a hologram with a realistic samplingnumber for visible light is described. Some fast

calculation methods for the diffraction calculation, including the hidden surface removal are discussed. In order

to verify the validity and thepracticality of the above-mentioned spectral relation, fast calculation of aseries of

wavefronts radially diffracted from a 3-D voxel-based object isdemonstrated.A full-color reconstruction technique

is described. Finally, a method for a continuous optical rotation compensation in a time-division-based three

dimensional display with a rotating mirror is presented.

Scalable quantum information processing with photons and atoms

Pan Jianwei (University of Science and Technology of China, China)

Biography:

Pan Jianwei, full professor of physics at the University of Science and Technology of China. He obtained his Ph.D.

degree in 1999 from the University of Vienna. In 2011, he was elected as the academician of Chinese Academy of

Sciences (CAS). In 2012, he was elected as TWAS Fellow. In 2014, he was appointed as the director of the CAS

Centre for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics. The research of Prof. Jian-Wei Pan focuses

on quantum information and quantum foundations. As one of pioneers in experimental quantum information

science, he has accomplished a series of profound achievements, which has brought him worldwide fame. Due to

his numerous progresses on quantum communication and multi-photon entanglement manipulation, quantum

information science has become one of the most rapidly developing fields of physical science in China in recent

years. Till now, Jian-Wei Pan has published 11 papers in Nature, 1 in Science, 20 in Nature research journals and

published more than 70 papers in PNAS and Physical Review Letters. For his pioneering works on experimental

quantum communication, quantum computation, and multi-photon interferometry, Prof. Pan has received

numerous prizes/awards from various academic institutions, such as Fresnel Prize from the European Physical

Society (2005), the Outstanding Scientist Prize from the Hong Kong Qiushi Science and Technology Foundation

(2005), the Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize from the CAS (2005), Beller’s Lectureship

from the American Physical Society (2007), Quantum Communication Award from the International Organization

for Quantum Communication, Measurement and Computing (2012), Science and Technology Achievement Prize

from Ho-Leung-Ho-Lee Foundation (2013), First Prize of National Natural Science Award (2015) and so on.

Abstract:

Over the past three decades, the promises of super-fast quantum computing and secure quantum cryptography

have spurred a world-wide interest in quantum information, generating fascinating quantum technologies for

coherent manipulation of individual quantum systems. However, the distance of fiber-based quantum

communications is limited due to intrinsic fiber loss and decreasing of entanglement quality. Moreover,

probabilistic single-photon source and entanglement source demand exponentially increased overheads for

scalable quantum information processing. To overcome these problems, we are taking two paths in parallel:

quantum repeaters and through satellite. We used the decoy-state QKD protocol to close the loophole of

imperfect photon source, and used the measurement-device-independent QKD protocol to close the loophole of

imperfect photon detectors—two main loopholes in quantum cryptograph. Based on these techniques, we are

now building world’s biggest quantum secure communication backbone, from Beijing to Shanghai, with a distance

Plenary Talks exceeding 2000 km. Meanwhile, we are developing practically useful quantum repeaters that combine

entanglement swapping, entanglement purification, and quantum memory for the ultra-long distance quantum

communication. The second line is satellite-based global quantum communication, taking advantage of the

negligible photon loss and decoherence in the atmosphere. We realized teleportation and entanglement

distribution over 100 km, and later on a rapidly moving platform. Based on the developed technologies, the first

quantum science satellite ‘Micius’ has been launched on 16th Aug,2016. ‘Micius’ will establish the first secure

QKD from the satellite to the ground with KHz rate over a distance up to 1200 km, which is about 20 orders of

magnitudes more efficient than using telecommunication optical fibers as quantum channel, and will test the

contradiction between Einstein’s local realism and quantum mechanics for the first time at space-scale. The

Quantum Science Satellite is expected to enable intercontinental secure communications and provide a platform

for more fundamental tests in the future.

We are also making efforts toward the generation of multiphoton entanglement and its use in teleportation of

multiple properties of a single quantum particle, topological error correction, quantum algorithms for solving

systems of linear equations and machine learning. Finally, I will talk about our recent experiments on quantum

simulations on ultracold atoms. On the one hand, by applyingan optical Raman lattice technique, we realized a

two-dimensional spin-obit (SO) coupling and topological bands with ultracold bosonic atoms. A controllable

crossover between 2D and 1D SO couplings is studied, and the SO effects and nontrivial band topology are

observe.

Nanoscale information optics beyond the diffraction limit

Min Gu

(Laboratory of Artificial-Intelligence Nanophotonics, School of Science, RMIT University,

Australia)

Biography:

Professor Gu is Distinguished Professor and Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor at RMIT University and was a

Laureate Fellow of the Australian Research Council. He is a sole author of two standard reference books and has

over 450 publications in nano/biophotonics. He is an elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science as well

as the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. He is also an elected fellow of the AIP, the

OSA, the SPIE, the InstP, and the IEEE. He was President of the International Society of Optics within Life Sciences,

Vice President of the Bureau of the International Commission for Optics (ICO) (Chair of the ICO Prize Committee)

and a Director of the Board of the Optical Society of America (Chair of the International Council). He was awarded

the Einstein Professorship (Chinese Academy of Science, 2010), the W. H. (Beattie) Steel Medal of the Australian

Optical Society (2011), the Ian Wark Medal and Lecture of the Australian Academy of Science (2014), the Boas

Medal of the AIP (2015) and the Victoria Prize of the Victorian Government (2016).

Abstract:

Photonics has transformed massively our everyday life and global economy for a sustainable future.

Nanophotonics, which studies optical science and technology at a nanoscale, has enabled the development of

nano-scale optical and photonic devices that provide a green-technology platform. Abbe’s law, originating from

the diffraction nature of light, has set up a barrier for any efforts from the researchers to access extremely small

regions in the nanometre scale. In this talk, I will show that removing this barrier can provide a new horizon for

the development of ultrahigh-capacity optical storage devices, nano-engineered biomimetic photonics, and

wide-angle-optical display.

dimension of the probing tool, the high resolution of the data, the diversity of information channels in the light field, and the flexible adaptability of the comparative standard. On the other hand, the user is also confronted with a bunch of challenges. Here one should mention especially the indirect nature of the measurement. This fact is the origin of a number of serious consequences which make it often difficult for the practitioner to decide for optical metrology. However, the numerous information channels recommend optical principles for the solution of various inspection and measurement problems. A broad variety of techniques is sensitive for the measurement of a particular quantity such as the intensity, the frequency, the phase, the angular spectrum, the polarization state, the angular momentum, the degree of coherence and the time of flight. By applying these methods a wide spectra of quantities can be evaluated. To them belong dimensional, structural, geometrical, colorimetrical, chemical, and mechanical properties of the object under test. More modern principles such as hyper-spectral technologies are designed to measure various modalities with one system. Known under the name of multimodal measurement techniques, these systems are capable of elegantly solving complex medical, structural-mechanical or biological problems. However, the high information density in optical signals is often not only an advantage but a challenge with respect to the correct interpretation of the measured data. This paper starts with a brief summary of the advantages and disadvantages of optical metrology. Afterwards we discuss the various information channels and present examples for their exploitation. Special attention is directed to the correct interpretation of the data.
