Welcome to UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
We are a Global business School because, as one of the world’s most open
economies, Ireland has a particular perspective on the world; one which is open to
new ideas and to the world.
The excellence of the education you will get here is well recognised internationally.
We are your gateway to the world having achieved the triple crown of international
accreditations from EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA: a signal of a quality degree.
We are also one of a small number of business schools internationally whose
degrees are consistently ranked amongst the top 100 in the world.
We hope you learn here, lessons about resilience in business and about individual and
organisational values which sustain the future.
Your achievements here will be shaped by us – but also to a great extent by you.
I hope you make the most of the opportunities presented to you here. Together,
we have the courage to drive you forward and the integrity to follow you there.

Assessment
Understanding your grades
UCD employs a grading system when assessing student performance and awards. The
table below sets out the Grades, Grade Point Average (GPA) and equivalent
descriptor*
GRADE GPA* DEGREE AWARD
A+ 4.2 A 4.0 H1 = GPA 3.68 or above
A- 3.8 B+ 3.6 B 3.4 H2.1 = GPA from 3.08 to 3.67
B- 3.2 C+ 3.0 C 2.8 H2.2 = GPA from 2.48 to 3.07
C- 2.6 D+ 2.4 D 2.2 Pass = GPA from 2.00 to 2.47
D- 2.0
E 1.6
F 1.0
G 0.0
* Please note that a GPA is calculated only when the module is complete and does not apply to
assessment components.
Modules may be assessed using a combination of assessment techniques such as
formal examinations, presentations, case study analysis, projects, presentations etc.
Details will be provided by each module co-ordinator (in writing in the module
outline/module descriptor) and orally (during the first session).
The Assessment Unit within UCD Registry oversees and manages the end of semester
examination process and students must observe its conventions and rules. UCD
examination regulations are available at
www.ucd.ie/registry/assessment/student_info/examregulations.pdf
Examinations are scheduled on a university wide basis. While every effort is made to
accommodate candidates, priority cannot be accorded to matters of personal
convenience alone; for example, travel plans, work commitments etc.
You must ensure that you comply with all aspects of the examination system. Once
you register for modules in order to successfully complete the module and gain the
assigned ECTS, you are obliged to complete the necessary assessment (formal
examination and/or assignments).
22
Academic Regulations can be viewed via:
http://www.ucd.ie/registry/academicsecretariat/docs/academic_r.pdf
Each student must ensure that all project work and continuous assessment work is
submitted on time and in a form which complies with guidelines provided by your
module co-ordinator.

Registration
Before attending courses you will need to register as a student, enrol in your courses
and receive a Student UCARD. You will be asked to upload your photo which will be
used for your student card as part of your online registration process. After
acceptance of a place on a UCD Smurfit School Programme you will have received
information on how to register on-line through the SIS StuWeb
www.ucd.ie/sisadmin/stuweb/
Student UCARDs The UCARD replaces the traditional student card.
During Orientation Week you will be issued with your student UCARD. Please note
you must confirm your enrolment and have uploaded a photo to your record on
SIS web in order to have your card issued. A UCARD is an essential item and
should be carried at all times. Your UCARD gives you access to all student facilities,
the residences, library, computer facilities, sports clubs and the student centre, and
has an electronic purse for payments on campus (food, print & copy, swimming pool,
lockers and more).
UCARD Top Up Machines are located inside the Smurfit School at the Student
Services Desk
Please check with your Programme Manager for further details in relation to student
card collection.
All new students must upload a digital photograph once your SIS Web has been
activated. It is important that you upload your photo as early as possible.
24
Information on photo upload is found here:
www.ucd.ie/ucard/ucard-services/get-a-ucard/
For further information please visit: www.ucd.ie/ucard
Change of Address
It is essential that your details as recorded by the University / Business School are
current and up to date.
All official UCD correspondence (including conferral invitations etc.) is automatically
sent to your permanent address.
Programme Quality
To gain insights on the academic rigour and quality of our programmes, we seek your
feedback on modules taught each semester. The University on-line student evaluation
forms are made available for completion during week 10 and remain open until the
end of the formal examination period (See official academic calendar 2016-17). These
on-line survey forms are completed anonymously and summary data gathered is fed
back to relevant Faculty members. Based on the data gathered, it is possible for us to
introduce programme/module enhancements. The Student Feedback on Modules ( SFM)
process is integral to our quality enhancement procedure and to programme
management and planning. Your insights (both positive and negative) are crucial to
t h i s process.
To supplement the SFM exercise, each programme schedules student Forum Meetings
each semester. This is a very effective mechanism for us in getting insights on what is
going well (and not so well) during each semester.
Blackboard
Blackboard is UCD’s virtual learning environment. Blackboard is available from
http://elearning.ucd.ie, or through UCD Connect, and can be accessed from any PC
with internet access. You will get a username and password allowing you to log on to
this site, once you complete registration. Your modules will be represented on this site
so you can access module information, (module outline, assessment details, essential
readings, notes) and other materials on-line. You can access and submit assignments
online through Blackboard. For Blackboard technical support, send an e-mail to
25
Please note that you can update your permanent and temporary address on the SIS Student Web: https://sisweb.ucd.ie/usis/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin

SECTION 3
Teaching and Learning
26
You are very welcome to the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, where teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do.
We strive to be student-centred and to provide a fourth-level learning experience that nurtures
informed, independent thinking and deepening knowledge, skills and insight to enhance your
contribution to business and society.
The foundations of our teaching and learning philosophy are:
• Research informed, skilled teaching and learning facilitation
• High standards of academic excellence
• Recruiting and supporting faculty who are experts in their subjects and who care about
their students
• A diverse and engaged classroom, driven by interactive, collaborative learning
• Reflective, responsible, creative and accountable students
• Professional and personal development within and beyond the classroom
• Continual curriculum renewal and dynamic academic programming
• Rigorous, multifaceted learning and assessment processes
As a member of the UCD Business community, we expect the highest standards of engagement
and integrity from you, in both your academic work and interpersonal contributions. UCD’s
Student Code is taken seriously and please familiarise yourself with it.
Graduate education differs from undergraduate education, moving towards a deeper level of
mastery and personalised learning. It requires informing yourself by reading extensively and
engaging with theory, applying what you learn to examples and case studies, and reflecting on
and thinking about what you are learning, why and what else might be needed. The academic
year moves quickly and the pace is fast. Talking with others and forming peer study and
discussion groups will enhance this process significantly.
Reflecting workplace practice, several of your assignments may be team based. Use the
opportunity to develop your capacity to collaborate, and to harness and learn from difference.
We recommend you throw yourself into the experience fully by setting goals for what you want
to achieve and learn during your time with us, making good use of the rich opportunities
available to you as a Smurfit student via UCD library and e-resources, supports such as the
academic writing centre, career centre, invited speakers, competitions and campus events, and
above all, your international peer group of fellow learners.
Learning at its best is a stimulus of change, and should you encounter difficulties (academic or
non-academic) during the course of your time here, please discuss them at the earliest
opportunity with your lecturer, programme coordinator or the School Student Adviser.
Prepare to stretch. Bring curiosity to what you do. Talk with your lecturers about what they are
striving to achieve and why. Ask for and give help when it is needed. Take part in the life of the
campus and make the most of its many opportunities for your professional and personal
development. Use this time to plan and build for your future and how you will contribute.
Good luck with your chosen programme of study and wishing you every success

UCD has a large number of staff whose specific job it is to support students and look out for their welfare.
Student Adviser
As your Student Adviser, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you and
congratulations on joining your Masters Programme here at UCD Michael Smurfit
Graduate School of Business.
Student Advisers offer support, advice and information to students on a range of
personal, social, practical and academic issues. It is particularly helpful to meet me if
you find during your time with us, you become concerned about something which
impacts on your concentration, your academic work, your ability to cope or on your
day-to-day life. For example, ill-health, concerns about exams, pressure at home,
anxiety, financial, relationship or accommodation difficulties or motivational issues.
Whether you need straightforward practical advice, emotional support, a listening ear
or the issue is more confidential and serious in nature, talking to someone about it
can help to prevent things from getting worse.
When students are experiencing difficulties which impact on their academic
schedules and or performance we work closely with other university staff to achieve
the best outcomes for students. When required we refer students to other services
within and outside of the university. Student Advisers can also provide you with
information regarding financial assistance and act as advocates on behalf of
students. Overall we aim to enhance students’ experience of college life.
I am available to meet students in the Smurfit School on Monday afternoons,
Wednesdays and Fridays.

UCD Get in Gear Exercise Classes
UCD students attending UCD Smurfit Business School can register for the UCD Get in Gear Get
Active student exercise programme which takes place on the UCD Belfield campus. The cost for this
7 week programme is €20 and you can register at UCD Sport reception desk on production of your
UCD student card. There are a large range of exercise classes where students are provided
with an opportunity to try out a variety of activities in a non-competitive
environment and allow students to include exercise around a busy academic
schedule.
The UCD Get in Gear Get Active student programme is offered twice a year
(October & January) to all UCD students. The UCD Get in Gear concept
encourages students to take a break from study and get active and healthy by
taking part in the UCD Get in Gear Get Active exercise programme.
UCD Get in Gear health and exercise programmes are delivered by UCD Sport in
partnership with the UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science.
To check out further details on the UCD Get in Gear Get Active programme log on to
www.ucd.ie/getingear or e-mail Carmel Keane (UCD Sports Education Officer) at

UCD Sports and Social Events
The Smurfit Ball is an annual event organised by a team of MSc in Marketing
Practice Students. The 2016 Smurfit Ball attracted over 500 attendees, and was
held in the beautiful Killashee House Hotel in nearby County Kildare. The theme
of the 2016 Smurfit Ball was ‘Old Holywood’ – and students created a glamorous
evocation of old style celebrity at the hotel. A great time was had by all.
This is a major event in the social calendar for Smurfit students, and affords
an opportunity for you to get to know students from other classes in the
UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
