The shimmering stars dance around the moon with flickering spurts, like playful illuminating balls of fire. I am intrigued, I am hypnotised, I am enchanted! As I rest upon cushioned blades of grass, I sink into the ground looking up at the sky, knowing it’s there for me. The universe is now my blanket keeping me warm and keeping me safe. The celestial void wraps

itself around me with all its glory and mystery.”

bring Your own Device (bYoD) Program 2014The Digital Education Revolution (DER) student laptop program, funded by the Federal Government, concludes in December 2013. The Federal Government has officially released and approved the ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) Policy for implementation in 2014.

Canterbury Girls High School has already been working very hard to ensure the smooth implementing of the BYOD Program for students in Years 7–9. Parents/carers and students can visit our school’s website (http://www.canterburg-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/) to access information about the 2014 BYOD program; including frequently asked questions, minimum device specifications and the BYOD equity policy.

All 2014 Year 7 students will receive final information on orientation day 2013. Current Years 8 students will receive information in week 9 of Term 4 2013 and current Year 7 students will receive information in week 1 of Term 1 2014. This information will give details about responsibilities and expectations for use of the computing devices at Canterbury Girls High School and when students will be required to bring their personal computing device to school for the first time.

Students in Years 10-12 who have previously been issued with a laptop under the DER program may also choose to bring their own device and are encouraged to donate their DER laptop to the school. This donation can be made by returning the laptop to Mr Smith so that it can be used by students in the junior years. Mr Smith will then ensure that the BYOD device meets the device specifications and complete login checks.

Not all students have the financial capacity to buy their own device and by donating the DER device to the school, students are not only performing a school community service but also enabling other students to actively engage in their learning using technology.

Zeal theatre company Visit cGHsFriday 1st November arrived and over one hundred drama students from Years 7-11 packed into the Cantabrian Hall to view ‘Burnt’ a play written and performed by Zeal Theatre Company.

I didn’t really know what to expect, but when I walked into the hall and saw three adults jamming with their guitars I wasn’t so happy about spending the rest of the day here. We sat down in the crowded room as they continued the musical accompaniment, and the loud audience fell silent as strange sheep, dogs and other various farm sounds came from the mouths of the three musicians. Were these the actors?

As the opening scene was established it all began to make a lot more sense. It was a fantastic opening scene! I’ve never heard anyone make such amazing sheep noises before. Through the course of the performance we met members of a family living on a farm in rural Australia. I was absolutely astounded at the abilities of these actors!

We followed the journey of these characters, and many others as they dealt with everyday life on a drought stricken farm. Family struggles with money and life in general. Each actor played about fifteen characters each! I have no idea how they did it with such precision. Each character was unique from the last and they had some great comic relief characters as well. The story was filled with utter joy, despair, sadness and comedy. I loved the way they used limited props to guide the story and instead relied on character and dialogue to convey it. I was extremely impressed with the play and I would jump at the chance of seeing another one. These actors have been working as a company for over twenty five years and their experience really shows. Thirty two students were lucky enough to experience a workshop with Zeal Theatre after the performance. They gave us heaps of great tips, encouragement and ideas to improve our acting skills. We also did some fun activities and viewed each other’s work. Overall I had a fantastic day, gaining skills and having fun with Zeal Theatre!

As the end of the year rapidly approaches we are completing the annual cycle of well being programs. Each Year group is looking forward to celebrating the learning achievements of the outstanding and meritorious students in each subject at the Recognition Day on Monday December 16th. On Tuesday December 17th with the formalities over, all Years will head out to an end of year celebratory picnic:

Year 7 – Gunnamutta ParkYear 8 – Royal National ParkYear 9 – Darling HarbourYear 10-11 –Tree Tops Adventure ParkAll students should return permission note to Year

Advisors and pay at Office C. As all picnics are outdoor excursions please ensure appropriate footwear and sun protection is worn. Students should bring their own food & drinks where possible to avoid extra expense on the day. A water bottle is a must!

leaPs program students from Year 9 celebrated their Graduation Evening on Monday November 25th with family, friends and mentors from participating legal firms. Speeches, finger food and performances were enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Ms Naisbett in the second year as coordinator of this highly successful program which nurtures the potential of young people during Year 9. Thank you also to Ms Flannery for her assistance with the performers. A special note of congratulations and thanks to Eve Eleftheriou who showed a film of her gymnastics competition. This exemplifies the developing confidence which the LEAPS program supports.

mentor training had another successful day with the team from Rising Generations on November 14th. I was thrilled that 75 students from Years 8 and 9 participated in the training.

This is an important leadership initiative in our school and promotes strong school community connections by welcoming new Year 7s through a program run by middle school leaders. Thank you to Ms Hunter and Ms Mawassi, Year Advisors for Year 8 and 9.

In other student leadership initiatives Ms Jones has finished the year strongly with numerous students

completing many hours of volunteering. SRC and Prefects continue to contribute to the community, collecting books, stationery and canned food to assist in bushfire recovery and support to families who require it in the Christmas season. Ms Kovanis will be relieved by Ms Kastanias in the Prefect Co-ordinator role for 2014, while Ms Moodie takes over as SRC co-ordinator from Ms Salakas, who moves in the Year 7 Year Advisor position.

The final leadership event of the year is the Halogen leadership conference on November 29th at Sydney Convention Centre. Inspirational speakers will motivate our Prefects, SRC, Green DEAR and mentors / volunteers who have undertaken leadership in our school community throughout 2013. Prefects attended the GrIP leadership Day on November 1 from which they returned positive and energised with lots of ideas. At Orientation Day for 2014 Year 7 on December 4th they will conclude their year by welcoming our newest Canterbury Girls students.

Finally I would like to acknowledge two of our learning support staff. Ms Tyral in the role of relieving Careers Advisor while Ms Matos is on maternity leave, has organised Work Experience for Year 10, taking place from December 2 for two weeks. Year 10 are well prepared! Workshops in careers from Elevate Education, and in financial literacy and planning from Money Savvy were co-ordinated by Ms Tyral on November 18th and 19th , before Year 10 undertook the PDHPE Crossroads program for the remainder of the week (thank you to Ms Burgess and PDHPE faculty).

Our support teacher Ms Fox has also been busy providing transition support to students requiring extra assistance. The SRC have been helping her run transition mornings for a number of students who will benefit from additional opportunities to become familiar with the high school environment. Ms Fox is a vital source of support for students experiencing periods of difficulty in their learning, as she ensures they maintain meaningful and manageable progress to the best of their ability, through a process of planning and liaising to create an individualised support program.

live streaming DramaYear 7 students and others had the opportunity to watch The Australian Theatre for Young People’s (ATYP) performance of ‘Compass’, which took place at The Wharf Theatre. The performance was live streamed to students all across the country. The play, Compass, written by Jessica Bellamy looked at human nature when encountering unknown threats. The young people away on a camp demonstrated a Lord of the Flies-esque mentality when faced with adversity. Alliances were formed just to be destroyed when people’s moral values were pushed to their limits. One of our Year 8 students, Remington Adeney, took part in this production. She played a character named Grace, who fulfilled the role of ‘class goody-goody’ or ‘teacher’s pet.’

I saw this performance in the theatre about a week before we saw it live streamed at school, and while it was a memorable and favourable experience, I saw it only from one viewpoint- right in the corner. The stage was square, with audience on two adjacent sides. Viewing it again later through live streaming I realized I saw only a fragment of all the dramatic talent offered. Watching the live stream, I could see all that was going on, seeing small pockets of dramatic brilliance that I had missed the first time around.

After the performance, a Q and A session took place with the cast, director and playwright. Questions could be asked either in person, (if you were one of the fortunate people to be seeing the play live), or through a Twitter utility on the ATYP website. Leia Ronald, a Year 8 student, submitted multiple questions and had the luck of having them answered during the session. It was different to have our school mentioned specifically and to feel a part of the whole experience, part of the audience, and yet not even to be in the theatre. Later other questions were answered via Twitter it was something of a ‘fly on the wall’ encounter.

On the whole, it was a rewarding and engaging educational experience which many of us, I suspect, will remember for many days to come.

Hsc economics team meets the sunrise team on their reserve bank excursion! On Wednesday, the economics class, escorted by Ms Michos, undertook our highly anticipated trip to the Reserve Bank of Australia. After a year of economical brain-packing, we finally had an opportunity to hone the knowledge Ms Michos had bequeathed to us and what a better way than to pick the brains of the country’s top-tier economists.

We congregated nice and early, budding with excitement as we set off. Prior to this, Ms. Michos had assured us that we’d run the opportunity of meeting Kochie, but of course this was struck off with a few laughs, forgotten here and there, however, lo and behold, her determination, coupled with our strategically planned journey, led us right outside Sunrise, and right to the man himself. Kochie and the Sunrise team were incredibly welcoming, and after a flood of smart phones making their way to the front, picture a techno-Congo line, and a call for cheesy smiles and the formula for money supply (which was met by a few shaky laughs, and a sudden interest in the floor tiles), we were once again on our way.

By the time we reached our ultimate destination, the RBA, we were in elevated spirits, amplified by the decadent quantities of chocolate we had consumed beforehand. It was only as we sat, mulling in our thoughts in the eerily quiet foyer, watching as employee’s hurried about and childishly gasping as to what quantitative possibilities lay in the vault beneath our feet, that the situation dawned upon us – our presentation would be led by none other than Dr David Orsmond, the Deputy Head of Economic Analysis at the RBA. However as we sat through the taped presentation the feeling disintegrated. Dr Orsmond engaged us in the concepts and roles of the RBA, their contributions to monetary policy and the economic

conditions elsewhere in the region, even stopping for a quick Q&A.

We were also lucky enough to listen to an economic-graduate employee, who marvelled us with her experience with working at the RBA and some handy HSC tips, however, arguably, the excitement was elevated as we were given a talk about the process of manufacturing money, noted by the ubiquitous “oohs and aahs” as everyone held their notes up in the light, examining the detail that we tend to take for granted.

This was all followed up by a leisurely stroll through the accompanying museum, admiring the historic intricacies of the process that came to manufacture the Australian dollars. The day gave us a stimulating insight into the inner workings of immense amount of work that goes into sustaining Australia’s economic growth.

2013 state maths challengeThroughout 2013 many junior Maths classes had the opportunity to use a games based Mathematics program called ‘Manga High’ to practise and develop their mathematical skills. In September there was a state wide Maths challenge where students competed in a series of Maths activities attempting to finish them with both speed and accuracy, whilst competing against other schools. We are proud to announce that through the combined effort of students from Year 7 to Year 10, Canterbury Girls High came 8th in the state. Congratulations to all those students who competed in the challenge.

Mathletics is a web-based learning platform that integrates home and school learning via the internet. Mathletics covers the Prep - Year 12 Australian Maths Curriculum and is currently used in over 2,000 Australian schools, with more than a million students worldwide accessing the site every day! It is the next generation in learning, helping students to enjoy maths and improve their results.

Canterbury Girls High School recognises the value of Mathletics for our students. Along with our regular traditional learning resources, we are planning to use Mathletics as a part of our Maths teaching programme in 2014.

The benefits of Mathletics are;l students are inspired and motivated to learnl Mathletics is adaptive, it responds to individual

student strengths and weaknessesl students instantly know if they are on the right track

and can work through the curriculum at their own pace

l animated support guides students through concepts whenever they need, like a maths tutor might do

l teachers can monitor student records in order to track progress and identify learning needs

l weekly parent emails allow you to monitor your child’s progress

Mathletics will be used for consolidation, homework and diagnostic purposes. Students in classes starting the Mathletics program will have 24/7 access to Mathletics, so you may notice your child accessing the site at home. Teachers will be monitoring usage and results and we encourage parents to do the same.

For more information about Mathletics visit www.mathletics.com.au to view the website and see comments from parents and schools.

If your daughter/ward is studying Mathematics in 2014, (all students from Years 7 to 10 plus any senior students who have chosen General, 2 Unit or Extension I/II Mathematics courses in Years 11 and 12) , then the cost of the program is $10 per student for the year. The same program, if purchased independently by parents, is $99.

The payment of $10 can be paid at Office C starting from Wednesday 4th December 2013 and payment should be finalised by the end of Week 2 Term 1 2014 ( Friday 7/2/2014).

Dear Ms Holden

Thank you for your correspondence regarding container deposit legislation.

The NSW Government recently announced the largest funding package for waste treatment and recycling in the State’s history. More than $450 million will be used to fund the development of Waste and Recycling Infrastructure, the fight against illegal dumping, tackling litter and improving the operation of the waste levy. The NSW Government has set an ambitious target for NSW to have the lowest litter count per capita by 2016. As part of this reform package, the NSW Government is developing a new state-wide litter strategy. The NSW Government has also allocated $20 million over five years to revitalise anti-littering efforts across NSW, including new education and community awareness campaigns, new and upgraded litter infrastructure and targeted enforcement programs.

Container deposit legislation and better ways to manage Australia’s packaging waste, are being considered by States and Territories through the national Ministerial Council. As part of this process the economic and social costs of different options to increase recycling and reduce littering are being assessed.

On 11 April 2013 the national Ministerial Council met and considered a progress report on the issue. The NSW Environment Minister, the Hon Robyn Parker MP, emphasised the need for the modelling to be completed as soon as possible so that a decision can be made on the best way to manage Australia’s packaging waste. When the national working group has completed its work the NSW Government will make an informed decision based on evidence.

Thank you again for taking the time to write and share your views. If you would like to be kept up to date on what’s happening across the NSW Government please sign up to the NSW In Focus Weekly Newsletter at www.nsw.gov.au.

Yours sincerely

At the end of Term 3 an evening assembly was held to recognise the achievements of our Year 12 students followed by a school function to say goodbye. The newly refurbished canteen area was transformed using candlelight and flowers into a stunning venue.

Year 11 Hospitality students volunteered their time to prepare and serve the food and did so graciously. The girls involved were: Jennifer Nguyen, Ching Yip,

Han Dong, Cindy Liu, Van Nhan, Rika Kutan, Salome Taufui, and Hasanah Rifai, who worked tirelessly to ensure food was delicious and presented beautifully.

Year 10 and Year 9 Food Technology classes were also involved in preparing food for the event. An excellent effort from the students involved. We wish the outgoing Year 12 all the best and hope they look back on their time at Canterbury Girls with fond memories.

MEDIA RELEASE

Embargoed, 1.00am Monday, 25 November 2013

Students warned against collecting parcels for money The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBPS) is appealing to high school students, parents and the community to be wary of collecting parcels on behalf of other people. Earlier this year while executing warrants in New South Wales (NSW), ACBPS officers uncovered details of two Sydney-based high school students who were allegedly recruited to collect parcels containing an illegal substance in exchange for money. The high school students were allegedly paid a few hundred dollars to accept the parcels, on behalf of another person, and then pass on the package to the person(s) responsible for the importation. One of the parcels contained four kilograms of the illegal precursor substance ephedrine, which when converted into methamphetamine, has a street value of approximately $250,000. Charges are currently being considered against the two students. During a crackdown on importations containing the illegal precursor substance ephedrine, used to manufacture dangerous and illegal drugs such as ‘ice’, ACBPS officers executed simultaneous warrants on five premises in NSW on 14 November 2013 with the assistance of the NSW Police Force. As a result of the warrants, approximately four grams of ice was located and a quantity of cash believed to be the proceeds of crime, leading to a 24 year old man being arrested and charged by the NSW Police. A number of high school students were also interviewed in relation to their involvement in previous importations. Enquiries into this are continuing. ACBPS Regional Director NSW, Tim Fitzgerald said any type of criminal activity involving young people is particularly concerning for law enforcement agencies. “We have spoken with the parents of the students about this matter and met with the principals of the high schools to warn other students should they be approached about the serious consequences of this type of activity,” Mr Fitzgerald said. “In this type of situation, a student is approached by criminals and tricked by an offer of earning so-called ‘easy money’ to pick up or receive a package concealing an illegal substance. These ‘initial receivers’ collect, or take delivery of the goods and pass these substances onto the criminals. “Students, parents and teachers are cautioned to be aware and are asked to report any information or concerns about someone they know who may be involved in this activity to Customs Watch on 1800 06 1800. This can be done anonymously.” Those caught importing a border controlled precursor, such as ephedrine, could face a fine of up to $850,000 or 25 years in prison under the Criminal Code 1995. Also, those caught procuring children for importing border controlled precursors could face a maximum fine of $850,000 and/or 25 years in prison.
