5 minutes with a Crosslinks Champion

This month we say a huge thank you to our volunteer Lynne, for 15 years of service. Lynne facilitates our computer program on Monday and also lends a hand at Friday art program.

Name: Lynne Volunteering at Crosslinks since: 2013

Q. What is the best thing about Crosslinks?

A. Crosslinks is a company that supports people with a disability by giving them the opportunity to participate in new and exciting activities or to improve and enhance existing skills or talents.

Q. If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and why? A. My superpower would eliminate pain. I suffer from excruciating pain every day so if I could eliminate pain for everyone then we could all enjoy life pain free.

Q. The best piece of advice I've ever been given is … A. Advice from Thumper in the Disney Movie "Bambi" ... "If you can't say anything nice then say nothing at all"

Q. What is your all-time favourite song? A. "I will always love you" ... Dolly Parton

Q. What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at Crosslinks? A. Just do it ... Your life changes when you volunteer because you stop focusing on the negatives in your own life when you see others who need your help and support.

Q. What are you most proud of achieving? A. Raising 2 beautiful children and 20 years ago graduating from University with a Bachelor of Science at the age of 50 years

Q. If you could do anything you wanted to, you would… A. Go on an around the world cruise

WA Disability Support Awards

National Disability Services (NDS), in partnership with the Department of Communities, held at a gala dinner at Crown Perth on Saturday 11th May 2019, for the WA Disability Support Awards.

The WA Disability Support Awards celebrate the significant contribution of individuals and teams who support people with disability to achieve their goals.

The Awards recognise and reward people who go beyond ordinary standards of service and provide the highest standard of individualised support to people with disability. The Awards also provide an opportunity to recognise excellence in leadership and innovation to continuously improve disability supports and create better outcomes.

Crosslinks had representatives nominated for some of these awards. A group of our staff enjoyed the dinner and the awards presentations but were unsuccessful this year and did not receive any trophies

RAP Recreation & Participation News On Saturday May 11th the RAPPERS got together at Caversham Hall (the Bat Cave), for a Superhero and Villain Disco. We had some heavy weight villains, the Joker, Poison Ivy, Maleficent and Cat Woman all made an appearance, but luckily the heroes saved the day with Captain America, Spider Man, Deadpool and Obi-Wan Kenobi all on guard to jump in at a moment’s notice to rescue anyone threatened by the evil villains. With the beats dropping and the smoke machine pumping, the RAPPERS danced the night away. Thank you to everyone who dressed up, as everyone looked amazing. Congratulations to the Colstoun Rd team, who went above and beyond to get their crew to look very villainy. A major thank you to all the amazing volunteers who helped out and took over the running of the kitchen for Donna.

Community Inclusion News

Chris, one of Crosslinks’ younger participants has not long returned from a National basketball trip held in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport from the 11th to the 18th February. Chris played in the Iva Burge National Competition for players with an intellectual disability. This competition takes place in conjunction with the “National under Twenty” competition so there is plenty of basketball to watch during the week. Chris represented Western Australia in the men’s team and competed against all the other states as well as a team representing Japan. This was Chris’s fifth trip to the Iva Burge competition.

Chris used the opportunity to work on his independent living goals as he travelled by air on QANTAS independently and had to share accommodation at the AIS with three other men. Chris said it was great to see around the Institute of Sport and see how the rest of the Australian athletes used the centre.

WA did not have any wins but Chris played really well and even scored a three pointer. We think it was all the extra practice Chris has when he comes out on a Tuesday with Crosslinks, that enabled him to score a three pointer and in total 24 points over all his games.

This is of course not the case as Chris trains very hard with his team and plays every week in Lesmurdie. Sadly for Chris, he was kept very busy playing or watching the other teams play and was unable to do any sightseeing in Canberra but he still enjoyed his time away with the team.

Community Living News Dlanon has been a star. He needed to lose weight and look at options for making healthy choices. This past year, Dlanon has lost a considerable amount of weight through making healthy choices and exercising. He no longer needs his frame to walk with and is looking lean, trim and terrific!

Dlanon loves helping in the kitchen with cooking and is keen to shop and select different vegetables for dinner. Through Dlanon’s hard work with exercise and healthy shopping, he has lost over 30 kilos in weight and his smile shows how happy he is with his efforts.

Community Living News (continued)

Walter Road residents, family and staff were privileged to hold a farewell barbeque dinner on Saturday the 11th May for staff member Jordon who is leaving Crosslinks. Residents were excited and happy to assist staff with preparation leading up to the event. It was a lovely relaxing afternoon enjoying great food wonderful company and listening to some good old favourite music. Belinda Harrison presented a beautiful small wooden clock as a gift on behalf of residents’ families. Staff from Walter Rd, and a few others who have worked at Walter Rd, enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Atrium Buffet restaurant on Friday 17th May to further express how grateful we are to have worked alongside Jordon and share memorable moments with him. Jordon was presented with a Pounamu (Green Stone ) from New Zealand from Walter Road Staff This gift is a sign of respect, honour and spiritual guidance for Jordon and his family. We are all sad to lose an amazing member of our team. Jordon will be missed dearly by everyone at Walter Road. We wish Jordon all the best on his new journey in life with his beautiful family.
