In reading this and future issues, please remember that the viewsexpressed in this publication will always be biased in favor of a healthyd i e t , hard training that emphasizes quality over quantity, and prudents u p p l e m e n t ation to improve health and performance. But above all,we at Endurance News believe there are no short cuts, and successcan only come from hard work.

Welcome to the 43rd issue of EnduranceNews, and a special welcome to those of youwho are reading this as your first issue. Asalways, EN is chock full of interesting news, including race coverage, human-interest sto-ries, and motivational and educationalinformation for you to ponder. Long-timeclient Robb Beams also debuts as a contribu-tor in this issue.

We are staying busy in 2004 with growth, innovation, and further refinement of ourservice as our main themes. We have a newwebsite (it’ll be up in a few weeks), the“everything-in-one-book” new catalog, newproducts HEED and RECOVERITE, theexpanded 6th edition of The EnduranceA t h l e t e ’s Guide to Success, the CompexSport electrical stimulator, the 3rd annualHighline Hammer Weekend, growing retailsales, and increasing international distribu-tion, just to name a few of our advances.

Of course, without your support and encour-agement, none of this would be happening. So, I’d like to take this opportunity to thankyou once again. You also have my word thatwe will not waiver from our uncompromisingcommitment to providing you with clean,h e a l t h y, effective products backed by our for-midable experiential knowledge andsuperlative-unheard of in this day and age-customer service. These were my goals in1987 and they’ve never changed.

Now it’s time for me to hop on my soapboxand tell you about my latest crusade. It’s notreally new since I’ve been talking about thisissue for twelve years now. I’m going all outagainst commercial refined sugar and artifi-cial sweeteners, colors, and flavors, in thefoods we eat generally and in “sports” prod-ucts specifically. In 1992 we led the way ineducating athletes about the importance ofconsuming protein during prolonged exercise, and in 1995 we were the lone voice advocat-ing little or no simple sugar intake duringexercise. Today you will find some productsand companies claiming protein and low sim-ple sugar content as selling points for theirdrinks and gels.

H o w e v e r, there are still far, far too many com-panies using toxic ingredients in the drinks, bars, and gels they market and sell to athleteslike you. More than likely you have one ormore of these products on your shelf.

I’m telling you this with all sincerity. There

Dear Client,is absolutely no way to justify the presence ofany of these ingredients in our foods andespecially in a sports drink, bar or gel.Manufacturers use these ingredientsbecause they produce cheap, sweet, brightlycolored appealing products-in other words, for the benefit of the seller, not the buyer. This is not just my opinion; research provesit. You see the effects of a high sugar/artifi-cial additive diet every time you go out intothe public.

As athletes we kid ourselves into thinkingthat because we burn so many calories, itd o e s n ’t matter what type of calories we con-sume. This foolhardy thinking couldendanger your health and longevity. Theseare toxic, zero tolerance substances that youwould be wise to avoid at all times, but espe-cially when training and racing because theseactivities place your body under much stress.

Now, some of you may accuse me of usingthis “crusade” as a tactic to sell more prod-uct. If educating you about the knowndangers of these toxic additives, being con-cerned for your better health, and offeringproducts that don’t contain junk, then I amcertainly guilty. Honestly, whether you buymy products or others is secondary to gettingyou to stop using products contaminatedwith fructose and artificial ingredients.

What You Can Do

The most important two things for you to doare (1) continue educating yourself aboutsugar and artificial ingredients, and (2) readthe labels of everything you buy. Wheneveryou encounter ingredients such as fructose, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, glucose, aspartame, Nutrasweet®, Splenda®,sucralose, acesulfame K, FD&C color #1-99,avoid them like the plague and look for alter-natives.

The articles on fructose and artificial sweet-eners in this issue are a good start in theeducation process. We’ll be bringing youmore and more accurate, reliable informa-tion on one of the biggest unreported storiesof our times on our website and in futureissues of Endurance News. Our new web-site will also have a bookstore with this typeof material offered. Last but not least, seekout non-establishment resources to contin-ue educating yourself about this issue.

The question you have to ask yourself is:

the price. They provide no performance ben-efit. We’ve looked long, hard, and everywhereto find a protein powder that didn’t compro-mise our standards and was at leastsomewhat palatable. We believe we’ve finallyfound two winners in the new Hammer Soyand Hammer Whey proteins.

Hammer Soy is a fantastic protein, a greatall-around, general health protein, one werecommend as a pre-workout/race proteinsource, and one that’s ideal for vegetarians. Our new Hammer Whey is of particularinterest, because we’ve changed from a wheyprotein concentrate to a whey protein isolate. The difference is substantial in that wheyprotein from concentrate typically yields 70-80% actual protein, while isolate yields apurer product, 90-97% actual protein, and

little, if any, lactose or fat. Even those withlactose intolerance may find it an easilydigestible protein source.

In addition to Hammer Whey now being inthe superior isolate form, another major plusis the inclusion of a whopping SIX GRAMS ofthe amino acid l-glutamine in each scoop. This extraordinary amino acid plays a criti-cal role is many important bodily functions, primarily the health of the digestive tractand immune system. The results of one well-designed study (Castell LM, Poortmans JR,Newsholme EA. Does glutamine have a rolein reducing infections in athletes? Eur J ApplPhysiol Occup Physiol. 1 9 9 6 ; 7 3 : 4 8 8 - 4 9 0 )involving 151 athletes undergoing strenuousexercise found that only 19% of the athletestaking supplemental glutamine got sick ,whereas those in the placebo group had asickness rate of 51%. In addition to its role in

enhanced immune system function, gluta-mine is also a major player in the repair andpreservation of lean muscle tissue. Needlessto say, it’s a vital component in supportingsuperior recovery between workout sessionsand races.

The newly revised Hammer Soy andHammer Whey are simply great products. We believe they’re the best protein powdersyou can buy, and they’re available now. Formore information, visit their specific productpages at www.e-caps.com and for more infor-mation on protein requirements forendurance athletes please read the recentlyupdated article, “The Importance of ProteinFor Endurance Athletes” in The EnduranceAthlete’s Guide To Success.

The Organic Vegan Food Bar energy bar, introduced in 2002, has been a big seller, despite the fact that you can buy a variety ofinexpensive energy bars on just about everystreet corner. The makers of these bars mayhave had a late start into the energy bargame, but they have proven that there is stillroom in the category for a premium qualityorganic product.

Their success has led them to other varia-tions of the original bar. We don’t offer theseother versions of the Organic Vegan FoodBars, but you can find them with increasingease at better health food stores and wholefood markets.

When Steve first introduced me to OrganicVegan Food Bars a couple of years ago, I wasimmediately impressed with the quality ofthe ingredients, pleasant taste, and moist-ness. As the makers point out on their label,“Most ‘health bars’ are acid formingprocessed dead food with artificial sweeten-ers and ingredients. Organic Food Bar is

your solution to eating healthy on the go.Our bar consists of enzymatically-live organ-ic super foods that provide optimumnutrition for all.” Their label also states “Nopreservatives, additives, salt, or refined sug-ars. Gluten Free.”

The “Mini” Organic Food Bar is Here

My only reservation about the original barwas its size. At a full 300 calories in a 68-gram bar, it’s 50-100 calories more thanmost bars and more than I usually eat as asnack. I would usually eat half of a bar andsave the other half for my next snack time.

Whether my asking them to make a smallerbar had anything to do with it or not, my wishhas been granted, in the form of a 170 calorie,40 gram version. I think this is the perfectsize for a snack bar. If you do elect to eat solidfood during extended periods of exercise, thisis a much more manageable size.

Of course the smaller size bar also carries a

smaller price tag, just $1.50. We will contin-ue to carry the original size also, at a greatprice of only $2.25 (SRP is $2.99).

Here’s a run down of the original 300-caloriebar’s premium ingredients: Organic AlmondButter, Organic Date Paste, Organic AgaveNectar, Organic Brown Rice Protein, OrganicRaisins, Organic Flax Sprout Powder,Organic Soy Sprout Powder, Organic QuinoaSprout Powder, Organic Sesame Seeds, andLots of Love!

The only difference in the make-up of the“mini” bar is that they left out the soy andquinoa sprouts.

If you haven’t tried these bars yet, you reallyshould. If you’ve been enjoying the bars butwishing they were a little smaller, then thenew mini bar is going to be perfect for you.You can order them from our website or bycalling us. Yes, they are worth the trouble andextra expense. A c t u a l l y, the point is that yourhealth is worth the extra trouble and expense!

The question of whether the glass is half fullor half empty has been debated by optimistsand pessimists for ages. In the case ofHammer Nutrition powdered products, it’snot really a debate as much as it is a percep-tion. This article offers an explanation andhow we plan to solve the perceived problemof half-full containers.

When you buy something, you would normal-ly expect a full container of product. Whatconstitutes a full container could also bedebated for some time, but I think we can allagree that a container filled only 50% or there-abouts is not understood to be “full.” So it isentirely reasonable that you might be a littledisappointed when you open a container andfind it only half full of powder. You might evenwonder if it’s defective, or if you really are get-ting as much as is stated on the label.

Unfortunately, I’m afraid this may have hap-pened to you if you purchased a container ofPerpetuem, HEED, Hammer Whey, orSustained Energy. We’ve even heard from afew clients who’ve suggested that we weredoing this intentionally to try to deceive peo-ple into thinking they were getting more for

their money or that we weren’t putting asmuch product into the containers as thelabels stated. Being accused of those types ofbusiness practices bothers me, but I can cer-tainly understand their concern.

If you have noticed this and wondered thesame, let me be the first to apologize. The lastthing any of us wants is to deceive or trickyou. Let me also assure you that no matterthe size of the container, you always get thefull amount of product and the stated numberof servings you paid for.

H o n e s t l y, this is really a manufacturing issue. When the powders are run through the highspeed bottling equipment, they “fluff up” witha i r. Once in the container, the powder gradu-ally settles. This is why all of our powders(and most everyone else’s, also), carry the fol-lowing disclaimer: “Contents are packed byweight, not volume, and some settling mayo c c u r.” The settling phenomenon also explainswhy the plastic scoop always ends up at thebottom of the container, even though it’sinserted after the powder goes in. As the pow-der is settling down, and during shipping, thedenser plastic scoop sinks through the powder

to the bottom of the container.

Because this is a manufacturing issue, I havebeen working with our production facilities toencourage them to find smaller containersthat do not hinder the manufacturing processand yet still allow the container to appear rel-atively full once it’s settled. Despite previousassurances that the containers were as smallas they could be, we have been able to reducethe container sizes by 25 to 33% on allHammer Nutrition powdered products. It’samazing what you can get when you persist!

Soon, you’ll notice the size of the HEED (32servings), Perpetuem (8 & 32 servings),Sustained Energy (8 & 30 servings) andother powder products arriving in smallercontainers, approximately 75% or more full. Please note: this is not the “smaller-package,virtual price increase” ploy used by so manyfood vendors. Only the container is smaller;the content amount and price remainunchanged. You will still be getting what youpaid for without the over-sized container orany misperceptions. Also, smaller packagingmeans easier shipping, easier storage, andless waste.

QUESTION : W h at are the causes of muscl ecramps and how can I resolve them?

ANSWER : The general origin of musclecramps as defined by sport scientists inhuman performance laboratories is notwell investigated and is therefore notwell understood. Clinically, “Exercise-Associated-Muscle-Cramps or EAMC’shave several theoretical causes:

• Inherited abnormalities of substrate metabolism (“Metabolic Theory”),

• Abnormalities of fluid balance (“Dehydration Theory”),

• Abnormalities of serum electrolyte concentrations (“Electrolyte Theory”),

• Extreme environmental conditions from heat or cold (“Environmental Theory”).

Anyone of the above or a combination of eachcould stage the physiological environment fora muscle cramp.

In studies, recent data from runners duringEAMC do not support a single hypotheticalcause from #1-2-3-4 above. Electromyographic(EMG) data collected during these crampepisodes reveals baseline activity is increased(between spasms). And, reduction of baselineEMG activity correlates well with clinicalr e c o v e r y. During acute cramping EMG activi-ty is high. Passive stretching reduces EMGactivity and the stimulus evoking crampm e c h a n i s m .

In animal studies, abnormal reflex activityin the muscle spindle (increased exercise)and the Golgi tendon organ (decreased activ-ity) has been observed in fatigued muscle.Schwellnus et al.*, have hypothesized thatEAMC is caused by sustained abnormalspinal which appears to be secondary to mus-cle fatigue. “Local muscle fatigue isresponsible for increased muscle spindleafferent and decreased Golgi tendon organafferent activity. Sustained abnormal reflexactivity would explain increased baselineEMG activity between bouts of cramping.Passive stretching invokes afferent activityfrom the Golgi tendon organ, thereby reliev-ing the cramp and decreasing EMGa c t i v i t y.”* *Schwellnus MP, Derman EW,Noakes TD, “Aetiology of skeletal muscle

Therefore the origins of muscle cramping aremultiple thus poorly understood. In review ofthe electrolyte, fluid, and fuel -related dis-turbances from athletes who resolvedcramping problems the following individualresolutions were reported to us from 1996-2004:

Introduction : Endurance athletes are encour-aged to read the labels carefully questioningevery ingredient listed. Just because an energyb a r, gel, powdered potion, or drink is associatedwith and recommended for use during health-enhancing exercise, does NOT mean thesubstance consumed is also “healthy”. Dr. ElsonHaas M.D. and Dr. Christine H. Farlow, D.C.,experts in this area, eloquently raise the questionand identify several common not-so-healthyadditives in manufactured food fuels thatshould be avoided.

Bill Misner, Ph.D., C.S.M.T.

Food Additives & Human HealthElson M. Haas, M.D.

Why Are Chemicals Added To Our Food?

O r i g i n a l l y, foods were grown and eatendirectly from a relatively unpolluted Earth.Wild foods were sought and gathered.Cleaner oceans, lakes and rivers fed us nutri-tious fish. Animals in the wild providedprotein foods to hunters and their tribes. Asthe human population multiplied, the worldexpanded, farming progressed, trade special-ties developed, and town markets shared avariety of goods among a diversity of people.Techniques for food preparation and preser-vation, such as pickling, salting, andsmoking, were developed to deal with thenew problems of storage, waste, and food-borne illnesses. With advanced technology, our modern food industry’s reliance on pro-cessing and additives continues to increase. Is this evolution, or are we sacrificing ourhealth for the sake of technological“advances”?

For decades now, the food industry has con-tinually created new chemicals tomanipulate, preserve, and transform ourfood. With the use of chemicals, scientists areable to mimic natural flavors, color foods tomake them look more “natural” or “fresh,”preserve foods for longer and longer periodsof time, and create altered versions ofbreads, crackers, fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products and many more commonlyused foods. Now there are even “foods” thatare made entirely from chemicals. Coffeecreamers, sugar substitutes, and candiesconsist almost completely of artificial ingre-dients. Such manipulation of our food can

have a profound effect on our body’s uniquebiochemical balance.

But there is a method to the food industry’smadness. They generally provide five mainreasons for why chemicals must be added toour foods:

1. To improve shelf life or storage time.2 . To make food convenient and easy to

p r e p a r e .3. To increase the nutritional value.4. To improve the flavor of foods.5. To enhance the attractiveness of food

products and improve consumer acceptance.

Which Food Additives Should You Avoid?

Avoiding toxins in your diet is an importantinitial step toward enhancing your healthand lowering your risk of disease. Sincefoods represent a source of these toxins,l e t ’s look at the key additives that mayundermine your health. Those with imme-diate effects may cause headaches or alteryour energy level, or they may affect yourmental concentration, behavior, or immuneresponse. Those with long-term effectscould increase your risk of cancer, cardio-vascular disease and other degenerativeconditions.

Begin by avoiding the most questionableadditives, no longer consuming them on anyregular basis. Make a decision to either cutdown on or cut out altogether those foodadditives that may be hazardous to yourhealth. Although it may seem difficult tochange habits and find substitutes for foodsyou enjoy, remind yourself that you will beadding to your diet some wholesome new fla-vors and foods that you may come to likeeven more. Avoidance and discrimination arecrucial proactive steps in most naturalhealth care programs.

Is It Necessary To Give Up All ProcessedFoods & Food A d d i t i v e s ?

When you begin to realize the health risksassociated with processed foods and foodadditives, it makes good sense to start eatingless of them. But this doesn’t mean you needto take an alarmist approach. Here is a s e n-sible rule to start with: If there are specialtreats that you just can’t imagine livingwithout, have them only on occasion. But beaware of what those special treats contain.Think about the possible wholesome alter-natives that might taste just as good andwhich don’t put your health at risk. A l s o ,consider changing your consumer habits. Are there farmer’s markets in your areawhere you could shop frequently? Is there anatural foods market with organic producenearby that you’ve never bothered to checkout? Changing your shopping and eatingroutines isn’t something you can easily doovernight. The first step is to sharpen yourawareness about what you’re currently eat-ing. Then you can take steps to make thechanges you desire.

Dr. Christine H. Farlow’s “Food AdditiveSafety Codes” chart (2) summarizes some ofthe additives in a variety of products withwhich consumers should be aware.

The old controversy over aspartame, a sub-stance approved for use as a sweetener infood products over 20 years ago despite clearevidence of its being a neurotoxin, mightheat up again. Lawsuits filed in early Aprilagainst 12 companies allege that the foodcompanies committed fraud and breach ofwarranty by marketing products to the pub-lic such as diet Coke, diet Pepsi, sugar freegum, Flintstones vitamins, yogurt and chil-dren’s aspirin with the full knowledge thataspartame, the sweetener in them, is neuro-toxic.

The plaintiffs, including the National JusticeLeague and two other anti-aspartameactivists, have asked for an injunction to stopcompanies from producing, manufacturing, processing, selling or using aspartame and,in all three cases have sought a jury trial. The suits, filed in three California courts, contend that aspartame is a drug mas-querading as an additive.

Chronic Poisoning

Aspartame liberates free methyl alcohol. Theresulting chronic methanol poisoning affectsthe dopamine system of the brain causingaddiction. Methanol, or wood alcohol, consti-tutes one-third of the aspartame moleculeand is classified as a severe metabolic poisonand narcotic.

A plethora of FDA documents released underthe Freedom of Information Act in the 1990’srevealed that the agency knew about thedangers of aspartame and only approved itafter then-CEO of Searle Laboratories, DonRumsfeld, pulled political strings in theReagan administration.

It only took us 43 issues over the course of 12years, but I am pleased to announce that wecan now offer you Endurance News as anHTML e-mail newsletter. Co-produced byour talented graphic artist Angela Nock andweb wizard Mandy Hallos, you can be surethat your electronic version will be just asreadable as our printed version.

If you are wondering why you should sign upto receive Endurance News electronically, letme let me give you a couple of compellingreasons. The first is consistency. You mayhave noticed that even though we publishquarterly, sometimes you get one and some-times you don’t. This is because the size ofour client base has become so large that wecan only mail to those of you who haveordered within the past four months. Weused to go back an entire year, but due toever escalating printing and postage costsand the aforementioned size of our mailinglist, we’ve had to cut back.

Of course we wouldn’t mind if you made apoint of ordering every 120 days or so, butwe don’t expect you to just so you canreceive every issue of Endurance News, especially with an increasing number ofyou buying our Hammer products fromyour local retailer. So, you can be sure toget all the news in every issue by subscrib-ing to the e-version. If you prefer to readon paper instead of the computer screen, each issue will have a “printer friendly”button that will allow you to print out your

copy to read and pass along to friends.

The second reason is our desire to conservenatural resources in all that we do. 15,000issues at 12 to 16 pages each means a lot ofpaper, and that means a lot of trees. If even50% of you sign up to receive EN electroni-cally, we’ll be able to save a lot of trees.

Of course, we save money when we send anissue electronically instead of mailing apaper copy to you, but really, this is not ourprimary motivation. All savings will go rightback into improving the publication and cir-culation. We can reach clients who are morethan four months out from their last order, increase the content of each issue, and possi-bly increase from four to six issues per yearin 2005.

Lastly, let me assure you that by subscribingto Endurance News in HTML e-mail form, you are not agreeing to let us spam you dailywith junk mail or sell your address to a thirdparty. We take your in-box very seriously andwe’ll put Endurance News in it only if youclick on this link and subscribe.

Mid-Season Burn Out and How To Recover From It Robb Beams, Athletic Endurance Masters, Inc.

C. Take a week off from training and askyourself what drew you to this sport in thefirst place. Remember how excited you wereabout completing your first race? Take eachday of your week off and spend it going overold photos and revisiting your most memo-rable events. Rekindle that feeling by goingback to your first race venue. Even if thereis no longer an event there, relive it on yourown (safety pending) and re-create theexperience.

D. Change your training courses to includea variety of routes, or at least do your regu-lar courses backwards. The key here is to becreative and break the boredom that leadsto burnout. When did you start identifyingyour workouts as “training” instead of“exercise?” Think about it!

E . Hire a qualified coach who will swim(open water), bike (outside), and run withyou to help you increase your efficienciesin all three disciplines. The key to enjoy-ing your workouts again is to learn howto be as efficient as possible and how tomaintain that efficiency throughout theentire race distance(s). Our motto is“ Work smart, not hard.”

Tired all the time

Endurance athletes tend to train at levelsmuch harder than they perceive them tobe. This leads to many long-term deficien-cies ranging from blood chemistry values tomental outlook. Each athlete needs toknow their Max HR levels for all three dis-ciplines (especially the bike and the run),and these need to be determined by field-testing, not generic formulas. With propertesting, you can establish training zonesbased on specific HR levels to ensure thatyou train the appropriate energy systemson any given day. Remember, if you haveset realistic goals and you have the appro-priate training protocols in place, you onlyneed to increase duration and intensitylevels. By training within the correct HRzones, you will eliminate the tendency totrain too hard.

Pushing the envelope for extended periodsof time depletes vital nutrients such as cre-atine and cytochrome C. Chronic neglect ofsleep and nutrition only compounds deple-

Have you reached the month of July andnoticed that you just don’t have the motiva-tion you had back in January? Are youfalling asleep earlier in the evening andhaving to force yourself to get out of bed inthe morning? Does it seem that you are nolonger the first one to arrive for morningswims and one of the last to show up forlong runs and rides? If these symptomssound familiar, you are probably facing acase of mid-season burnout.

As endurance athletes we can withstand alot of stress and high load levels, but wereach a point where we need take a stepback and recover, both mentally and physi-cally. Let’s consider each characteristic ofburnout and suggest some strategies tohelp you turn it around:

Not Motivated

A. The first thing you must do is evaluateyour short, mid, and long-term goals andhonestly assess whether they are realisticgiven your other responsibilities, such asfamily and work. Do you have enough timeto get the necessary workouts in to meetyour goals, or do you find that the workoutsadd another stress to your lifestyle? If youfind that you are cramming everything in toget it all done, you need to re-evaluate yourrace goals. Remember, you don’t have todrop out of a race just because you couldn’ttrain exactly the way you intended.Instead, realign your expectations in lightof the available training time. Don’t let thelikelihood of failing to meet your expectedor desired time for the event rob you of thepleasure of participation.

B. Look over your time trial and field-test-ing results and analyze how far you havecome since the beginning of the year. If youhaven’t improved as much as you wouldhave liked, then you need to look into yourtraining protocols; something is obviouslymissing. If you currently don’t have a coachto develop and analyze your weeklyprogress, then take your training log to areputable coach and ask him or her for ananalysis. Having an outside opinion of yourprotocols will help you more readily identi-fy your missing workouts and physicalweaknesses.

tion issues.

Tips to regaining your energy

1. Have your blood chemistry evaluat-ed for any deficiencies beforecompleting any Max HR assessments.

You need to identify any deficiencies thatmay inhibit performance, and more impor-tantly, your overall health. Some of thecommon deficiencies we see with our clientsare low iron and CoQ10 levels. With someadjustments to your diet and simply eatingnutritional meals on a regular basis, yourblood chemistry will return to normal. Keepin mind that it takes six months to com-pletely replace all of your muscle tissue; thebody you have today is literally a reflectionof what you have been consuming over thelast six months.

2. Eat more food and more often.

The most common scenario seen with ourathletes is that due to such a full schedule, they are often too busy to eat. To get a bet-ter idea of your caloric intake, simply keepa food log for four days (preferably twoweekend days and two week days) and thenevaluate the total grams of carbohydrates, protein, and fat that you have consumed foreach day. There are many different theoriesas to which combinations work the best. However, each athlete responds to foods dif-ferently-carbohydrate sensitivity, slowmetabolism, etc. Don’t take on one diet oranother; instead, document and evaluate tomake sure that you are doing what is rightfor you. Having your blood tested at regularintervals will help determine if you are get-ting enough of the necessary macro andmicronutrients. The most consistent find-ing we have seen has been that athletes donot consume enough calories. This not onlyleads to fatigue, but also hinders perform-ance levels because the necessary nutrientsto rebuild muscle are inadequate.

3. Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water

When you realize that the average humanbody contains ninety-six pints of waterand that sixty-four of these are intracellu-l a r, you quickly see the importance of

hydration to the survival of an enduranceathlete. When a muscle becomes dehy-drated by only three percent, that muscleloses ten percent of its contractilestrength and also incurs an eight percentloss of speed. Imagine undermining all ofyour hard work by starting your workoutu n d e r-hydrated and then making the sit-uation worse by not consuming adequatefluids and electrolytes (to facilitate theabsorption of the water). Most athletesd o n ’t pay attention to how much bodyweight they lose in a regular workout, sothey are not able to determine theirhydration needs in an important hardworkout or race. Remember, knowledge isp o w e r. Know what your typical losses areand how to replenish them.

4. Complete a Max HR assessment andestablish specific HR training zones

Endurance athletes don’t have problems“going hard,” but rather “going easy.” Tomany athletes, this would seem counter-productive, given all of the hard work of aweekly schedule. However, active recoverydays are just as beneficial as hard trainingdays because they help get fresh blood flowinto broken-down muscle tissue and alsohelp loosen muscles for slow, passivestretching. What is the highest HR atwhich you can exercise and still get thebenefits of active recovery? This trainingzone is a combination of your true Max HRand your resting HR levels. Determiningall of your training zones (from easiest tothe hardest) requires capturing your rest-ing HR for a minimum of four weeks toestablish an up-to-date average and com-pleting a Max HR test every for eight to tenweeks to determine if your Max HR haschanged (the actual calculations of HRzones involve some additional calculationsoutside the scope of this article). Keep inmind that the heart is a muscle, and thestronger it gets, the lower your Max HRbecause it can push the necessary amountof blood and oxygen at a lower HR. Don’tworry about a low HR affecting your train-ing levels, because your resting HR usuallyfalls accordingly.

5. Add one hour a night to your sleepand add a nap on the weekends

Though this is the tip that costs nothing(other than your time) and is the mostcomfortable (if you can calm your mind), itis the most overlooked. Rest is your body’sopportunity to rebuild and repair muscletissue (which is the purpose of training inthe first place) and replenish the bloodchemistry with foods you have consumed. If you break down a typical twenty-fourhour day, you immediately lose 8-10 hoursa day for work, an hour for traveling toand from work, four hours to family andfriends and you have nine hours left (ide-ally). However, nothing is perfect in theworld and things come up that shift theabove numbers, so be flexible! Striving toget the necessary sleep is step numberone; arranging your schedule to allow forit is more difficult. I would challenge youto set your day up around your sleep ver-sus fitting it in around your activities.

6. Take one day off per week

D o n ’t be afraid to take a day off from train-ing. This means no training whatsoever, noshort 20 minute runs or short swims. If atall possible, don’t wake up to an alarm.Start your day off with a good-sized break-fast full of low glycemic carbohydrates, clean and lean proteins, and healthy fats.If you have been consistent with yourweekly and monthly workouts, you havenothing to fear. If you can, arrange to get amassage or a session of facilitated stretch-ing from an experienced trainer. This willhelp you relax and decrease your chancesof a pulled muscle.

Welcome to the mid-summer edition ofEndurance News! Although my column isnormally entitled “From the Saddle of SteveBorn” this month’s edition would probably bemore appropriate with the title “From theRoad with Steve Born.” That’s because, for aportion of May and a good chunk of June, I’vebeen on the road, working at event expos, giving clinics, or attending races. I have to behonest in saying that life on the road can beget old after awhile but that’s always over-shadowed by the fact that I love being atthese events, doing expos, giving clinics, and, best of all, meeting athletes. Still, after two-plus weeks of driving the Hammer van andliving out of a suitcase (for the most part) itwas time to come back home. Even though itwas all a lot of fun it’s definitely good to beback. Also, with our Montana summer nowfirmly upon us, I’m able to be on my bike alot more (and I’m enjoying the heck out of it...it stays light until darn near 10:00 PM!).Like Joe once told me while we were riding,“When it’s like this (meaning a sunny, warmday in Montana) there is NO better place tobe in the world.” You know, I think he’s right.

Recoverite

I am so excited about the introduction of thisoutstanding product because I believe it willvery easily, precisely, and deliciously fulfillsuch an important component of athleticperformance, namely, your recovery. I firmlybelieve (and am fond of saying) that howwell you recover today greatly determineshow well you perform tomorrow. To put itb l u n t l y, if you want to get the very most outof all the time and effort you put into train-ing, and if you want to achieve the bestpossible race results, you must subscribe tothe concept that when the workout’s done,i t ’s not done-not until you put the finishingtouches on it by “refilling the tank” withproper amounts and ratios of quality carbo-hydrates and protein.

When you do that consistently, your body

responds by recovering more thoroughly(your immune system gets a boost and yourmuscle tissue rebuilds stronger and morecompletely). It’s “soaking up” all the hardwork you’ve done in training, which willallow you to be at your physical peak comerace day. In addition, as part of the adapta-tion process to your training, your body willstore more and more of a premium fuelknown as muscle glycogen. If you replenishyour body adequately, and as soon as possibleafter each and every workout, it will build upa nice 60-90 minutes worth of this preciousfuel, which is the first fuel your body will usefor tomorrow’s workout or race. I don’t knowabout you, but I’d definitely want to start arace with as much “on board” fuel as possi-ble! And it’s really pretty easy to make this areality. All you need to do is replenish thebody with the right amounts of quality fuelas soon as possible after all your workouts, when glycogen synthase activity is at itshighest. We make that important task eveneasier with Recoverite. How? BecauseRecoverite has the right amounts and theproper ratios of the right kind of carbohy-drates and protein all in one product... all theguesswork has been eliminated. Recoveriteis definitely the easiest way to replenish yourbody with the right fuel in the right amountsand it absolutely fulfills a crucial aspect ofathletic performance: recovery. Not onlythat, Recoverite tastes good too! No doubtabout it, this is definitely a product you needto have in your “arsenal.”

The 6th Edition of “The EnduranceAthlete’s Guide To Success” is Here!

One of the first requests Brian asked of mewhen I started at E-CAPS/HammerNutrition in 2000 was to finish an article hehad started entitled, “The 10 BiggestMistakes Endurance Athletes Make.” Littledid we know back then that this little articlewould provide the foundation for a body ofwork that we tentatively called “The FuelingHandbook,” a manual that Brian had wantedto provide that wouldn’t be misconstrued asa glorified product catalog.

Though this fueling handbook was a top-level project and one we were committed tocompleting, we were not yet 100% sure inwhat direction we wanted to take it. Duringthis time I had already written a couple arti-cles based on great information that Dr. Billhad provided me over the years (I must havewell over 3000 emails of his in my email fold-

er) as well as my own experiences (both pos-itive and disastrous) as an enduranceathlete. Then it hit me: Why don’t we makethis handbook a compilation of these current(and future) fueling-specific articles? Brianconcurred and we were on our way. We need-ed a new name for this expanded vision, andBrian hit the nail squarely on the head withThe Endurance Athlete’s Guide to Success.

The Guide has itself been an overwhelmingsuccess, with well over 100,000 copies dis-tributed and/or downloaded within the pasttwo years. Thousands of athletes are achiev-ing better performances in their training andracing from the application of the conceptsprovided in The Guide. Product Spotlight : Improve Post Workout Recovery And More With Boron Steve Born

This column is dedicated to those E-CAPSproducts that may be considered “fringe,”especially in light of our primary productssuch as the Daily Essentials - PremiumInsurance Caps, Race Caps Supreme, andMito-R Caps. However, these particularproducts have a definite reason for being inthe E-CAPS line and, used under specific cir-cumstances, may have an equally definiteplace in your supplement regimen. One ofthese nutrients/E-CAPS products is boron, and the reason I’ve chosen it is because I per-sonally find this time of year, whentraining/racing volume is peaking, to be anexcellent time to increase my intake of thismicronutrient.

Here’s an article about boron that appears inone of Dr. Bill’s Journal of Endurance(J.O.E.) issues, from back in 2001...

Boron’s Micro-Hormone Donation ForEnhanced PerformanceBy Bill Misner, Ph.D.

Knowledge of human physiology and nutri-tion has increased greatly, and so hasapplication of dietary alterations and micro-supplements. Modulation of dietarycomposition and/or supplementation with spe-cific nutrients with the intent of improvinghuman physical performance is a working def-inition of nutritional ergogenic aids.

BORON is such a trace element nutrient, and recently it has been shown to increasethe concentration of plasma steroid hor-mones. In a single blind, crossover trial, itresulted in a significant increase in plasma17-B estradiol (E2) concentration andthere was a trend for plasma testosterone(T) levels to be increased! The ratio ofestradiol: testosterone increased signifi-c a n t l y. However, there was no perturbationin plasma lipids. Furthermore, the effect ofboron on steroidogenesis and its mecha-nism was also investigated in two morestudies conducted on adult male rats. Theelevation of endogenous steroid hormonesas a result of boron supplementation sug-gests that boron may be used as anergogenic safe substance for athletes, which should be further investigated. [1]

In general, most sport science nutritionistsrecommend no more than 3-6 milligrams

Boron per day, stating the body has only amicro-appetite for this hormone-enhancingmineral. However, Dr. Michael Colgan,Ph.D., known internationally for hisresearch in sports nutrition and in agingtakes 8 mg. Boron daily [2]. Boron is anessential element for plants and is also nec-essary for humans. Boron isdistributed throughout thehuman body with the highestconcentration in the bones anddental enamel. Boron affectsthe metabolism of steroid hor-mones [increases male sexhormone levels.] and may alsoplay a role in converting vita-min D to its more active form, increasing calcium uptake anddeposition into bone. It isessential for healthy bone andjoint function, effecting the bal-ance and absorption of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Itaffects cell membranes andhow signals are transmittedacross membranes.

Boron deficiency may affect calcium andmagnesium metabolism, the composition, structure and strength of bone, contributingto osteoporosis. This is due to decreasedabsorption with increased excretion of calci-um and magnesium. Due to these effects oncalcium and magnesium metabolism, borondeficiency may also contribute to the forma-tion of kidney stones. Such a deficiency maydecrease mental alertness.

There is no RDA for boron. A safe and ade-quate daily intake is estimated between 1and 10 mg. Toxic effects appear at intakes ofabout 100 mg. Premium Insurance Caps areformulated at 5 milligrams boron per each 14capsule dose. Separate boron supplementstypically come in 3-5 mg. units. Plant foodssuch as fruit, vegetables, soybeans and nutsare rich sources of boron but the level in fooddepends on the soil in which it is grown.

Additional new research shows that boron ismost helpful for aiding in the prevention ofprostate cancer, which is, of course, of primeinterest to all male athletes. This and all thereasons Dr. Bill presents is why consumingadequate amounts of boron are important.During most of the year I believe a 2.5 mg

dose (obtained from one packet of PremiumInsurance Caps) is an adequate dailyamount (though taking additional boronwould certainly not be harmful at all). Theprimary reason I like taking an additional 5mg of boron after training sessions duringmy peak training volume periods is because

i t ’s during this time thatboron may become moredepleted through moreintense and/or higher vol-ume training. Because boronsupports adequate produc-tion of specific anabolichormones (not the overpro-duction, as somebodybuilding-specific compa-nies have suggested in thepast) and because these hor-mones are critical forensuring optimal recovery Ifeel this additional boronsupport goes a long way dur-ing these periods of highervolume training.

As far as toxicity/toxic effects of this mineralare concerned (the effects being manifestedas loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, andskin rashes) I’ve looked at several differentsources, most of which list varying amounts. Some have suggested doses around 50 mgdaily while others suggested doses as high as500 mg daily. The most common level I saw, which concurs with Dr. Bill’s assessment, was for daily intakes of around 100 mg/day.Considering that two full packets ofPremium Insurance Caps provides 5 mg ofboron and that an additional boron capsuleprovides another 5 mg the maximumamount we would be taking would still fallfar, far below any toxic potential amount.

So while boron may not be in the same cate-gory as our “Daily Essentials” products, ithas a definite place in the E-CAPS productline. Especially now, when your training vol-ume is at or near its peak, perhaps you tooshould consider making it a part of yourdaily supplement regimen.

Q: Give us a little history on your ath-letic background

A : I was never much of an athlete inEngland. Hated sport. I used to like hikingbut did not like swimming or judo or gym-nastics; I felt I did not blend in! Instead, Iexcelled in Girl Scouts camping etc. I starteddoing tris in 1993 in Puerto Rico. I was run-ning a 10km race and a Columbian trainerspotted me and asked if I needed a coach. Ilaughed and said I was going to be a triath-lete. When he saw thebike I had he kindlytook me to a friend ofhis who lent me a rac-ing bike for the event.I could not change thegears or get the waterbottle out of the cage...but I loved that bike!On race day I was lastout of the water (thebike was easy to findthough!). As it turnedout, I won my agegroup and received atrophy and $50! Inever gave that bikeback and purchased itin 1993!

Q: How did youcome to do ultradistance triathlons? What was it that made you think, “thisis the sport that I can excel in?”

A: I enjoyed the racing season in 1993 inPuerto Rico and I was told there was anIronman race but that was impossible andonly 1 or 2 athletes from P.R had done one...hmmm. So in 1994 I signed up for theVineman in Santa Rosa, CA. In January ofthat year I was hit by a car ended up with acast on my left leg (I still suffer with thatleg). However, I went and when I finishednearly last they were taking down the bal-loons. A pro named Nancy Vallence told me Ishould go to New Zealand as was a great raceand plenty people at the finish chute. So in1995 I went to Auckland New Zealand, did agood race and met 3 athletes from Englandwho told me about a triple Iron distance inFrance!! So I went to France in 1996 for atriple Iron distance race. After swimming 7miles in a swimming pool I went to get onthe bike for 336 miles and had no helmet! I

I admit it. Suzy is one of my all-time favoriteathletes to work with. And no, it’s notbecause, via her world travels, she keeps mewell stocked in some of the world’s finest cof-fee and chocolate It’s because she’s one of themost remarkable athletes you could evermeet, one who’s story is so inspiring. Yet, inspite of her substantial success over the years,Suzy is about the humblest and most accessi-ble person you could meet. Her naturallyeffervescent and joyful spirit overflows witheveryone she meets yet underneath she is, asthe cliché goes, “tough as nails.” Most recent-ly Suzy took third place in the AustrianDouble Ultra Triathlon Neulengbach in 32hours 12 minutes 40 seconds.

Q: You’ve had a remarkable journey tobecoming the champion athlete you areSuzy. Tell us a little about yourself andthe journey.

A: Well I was born in London England on18th April 1964 making me the grand old ageof 40! Parents were in the hotel industry so Ibecame a Pastry chef in 5-star hotels inLondon - the last thing on my mind was sportof any kind. I hated gym class and liked tostudy music. I spent 10 years of my life inand out of 17 mental institutions withAnorexia Nervosa weighing in at 29 kg (64lbs.) at my lowest, I had tubes up my nose, needles and tubes in my arms. I was treatedlike a dangerous criminal and sentencedunder the mental health act of 1983. I wasnot allowed to get out of bed and I waslabeled devious, sly, and manipulative. I wasin a complete void being force fed and madeto feel like a freak of nature. They were notwasted years as I learned a lot about people. While I was on bed rest I saw a marathon ontelevision and decided I wanted to do that. The nurses laughed at me and said I couldnot run to the toilet I was so thin! A few yearslater I find my self to be a triathlete! I cur-rently reside in Puerto Rico, working as asport journalist for x-tri.com.

borrowed a French Telecom workers hardhelmet and soon found my self on French TVcycling through Grenoble advertisingFrench telecom! I was not to finish that raceas I fell asleep in the night and cracked afew ribs. The following year I placed 3rdfemale after finishing the 78-mile run! I sud-denly became the 9th woman in 10 years tofinish a triple iron race! I love the mindset ofthe athletes and crews so different from theshort distances. The friendships I made dur-ing the race it is not about finishing but

starting the race andhoping to finish.

Q: What have yourresults been overthe years?

A: I’ve done over 200triathlons of all dis-tances in my career[ S t e v e ’s Note: Tr u s tme, the list is impres-s i v e ! ] including the1998, 1999, 2000,2001, 2002, 2003Ultraman Hawaii,2000, 2001, 2002,2003, 2004 DoubleI r o n - d i s t a n c etriathlon in Canada[ S t e v e ’s Note: Suzywon the race] and the

2003 and 2004Austrian Double Iron-distance triathlon[Steve’s Note: Suzy claimed 3rd place in thismost recent race]

Q: Of all the events you’ve done is therea favorite of yours?

A : Of course! Without having to even thinkabout this question, Ultraman Hawaii! Thisrace just brings back triathlon to its roots:Day One is a 6.2-mile ocean swim and a 90-mile bike to the Volcano Park (the view isbreath taking). This second day in a 171-mile bike around the island to Hawi andDay Three finishes with a 52-mile run toKona. Every athlete has a support crew andby the end of 3 days you have a new familyof friends!!

Q: What E-CAPS/Hammer Nutritionproducts are you currently using? Whathave been your experiences with them?

A: I currently use Perpetuem as I love thetaste and it is superior over other productsout there. I love the raspberry Hammer Geland the espresso (mainly forthe caffeine boost!!) I also usethe Race Caps Supreme,Endurolytes, and LiquidEndurance. I usually go byyour (Steve’s) advise for longevents. I mix the desired num-ber of scoops of Perpetuem tolast for 12 hours so I keepcount of the calories and anoth-er bottle of water and then justkeep asking for water. These products really domake a difference when you use them cor-rectly and the best thing is that the peoplethat sell them use them too!

Q: As an ultra distance triathlete, whatadvice (mental, training, other) wouldyou give to triathletes that want to gobeyond the half or full iron distance to

an ultra distance race?

A : Just to give it a try! All so often I get toldI am nuts fordoing what Ido. It is notuntil youactually expe-rience theultra scenewhether it becrewing orc o m p e t i n gdoes one real-ize the fullmagnitude of

the events. I get tired of reading about ath-letes who worry about not finishing or slowtime or not placing in the top slots. To me itis not about whether you win or lose but howyou play the game. It maybe seem to be aphysical sport but when you are running 78miles it is much more a mental game andhow the athlete perceives 78 miles... as I seeit, it is one mile 78 times! As for training, Iam still learning although I will say there isnothing like a good solid base, which meansif you plan to do a double iron distance beprepared to sit on that bike for 10 to 15

That big race of the season, the one you’rewhole season is geared toward, should be anexciting time. You’ve put in the hard workand hopefully you’re ready to put the ham-mer down. However, the final weeks leadinginto that big event can be some of the moststressful of the year.

This is when the doubts start to creep in.This is when you start doing things youshouldn’t do during a taper. You start push-ing harder to make sure you eek out everybit of speed for the race, or you do that “onelast” track workout or long ride “just to besure” your fitness is OK. Problem is, in thefinal weeks those workouts are the ones thatcan cripple your ultimate performance.

If the work hasn’t been done before taperingbegins, then it’s too late. If you’re still under-trained - due to recent sickness, injury, laziness, etc. - still, the only way you’re goingto get your body totally prepared is by taper-ing and not by working harder.

Nate’s Corner : Get The Work Done Before Tapering Nate Llerandi

I suggest a 2-week taper for Olympic dis-tance triathlons and 40k TTs on the bike, or10k runs. For marathons, Ironmans andultra-cycling events, I give my athletes amonth-long taper. Weekly volume tapers offd r a m a t i c a l l y, and the intensity of the hardworkouts stays high though the volume ofhard work done also decreases. During thisdecrease in overall work, the body takes lesstime to recover from workouts and, thus, isable to top off its energy system stores -something it can’t usually do during hardbouts of training.

Finally, don’t misinterpret the “mid-taperblues”, a period of time where you can feelsluggish. It’s very common to the taperprocess. Your body has been used to gettinghammered and all of a sudden you’re beingnice to it. It takes a while for the body toadapt and round the corner. If you encounterthe blues, don’t panic. You’ll rebound quick-ly. When you do, you should be feeling moreenergetic, stronger, faster and confident.

Cutting down on duration, amount of inten-sity and, possibly, the number of weeklyworkouts is the way to maximize the taperprocess. Doing that last hard/long workoutjust to be sure your fitness is OK, is not theway to ensure great results.

Q: What’s next for Suzy Degazon?

A : Hmmmm to take cross-country ski les-sons from Steve? (Only joking Steve!). I willbe at Ultraman Hawaii for my 7th time inNovember and in 2005 I would like to trythe Marathon de Sables in Morrocco,Leadville 100 in Colorado, and Cycle to theSun in Maui, and begin teaching Scuba div-ing again to children. And, in about 2006I’d like to do both the Badwater Ultra runand the Furnace Creek 508. Whatever I do,I always try to apply this thought: “AJOURNEY OF A 1000 MILES BEGINSWITH A SINGLE STEP. ”

I had another breakthrough race at IronmanCoeur d'Alene last Sunday, taking the leadon the bike and almost holding on for thewin. World class triathlete Chris Legh(Australia) put forth an incredible 2:53 runsplit to catch just catch me at mile 25, but my2nd place, 2:43 bike course record, and 8:44overall time (19 minute PR) were anythingbut disappointing. I just got back from my 1/2 iron-distance raceon Kona last week and I am happy to reportanother successful trip. I finished first in myage group and fifth overall. However, I haveto add that I had 2nd place in the bag butbroke my chain with 3 miles left to go. I hadto run my bike in with my bike shoes.Needless to say that it did not make it anyeasier to run 16.1 miles in the Kona heat.Upon my return to Anchorage I completedthe Eagle River (sprint) triathlon and missedmy own course record by 4 seconds :-( Atleast I was able to secure the win.

I am writing to update you on my early season. Its been a crazy spring with much bad luck andmuch success. I had major bike troubles at triathlon worlds that cost me 7 minutes but still hadthe 6th fastest run despite that. I also did the Aquathlon Worlds before Tri Worlds -- I had agreat first run finishing second overall by half a second, unfortunately I fell victim to theextremely cold water with no wetsuits allowed but hung on to finish as the top AmericanOverall. Duathlon worlds went much better despite getting knocked down really hard at thestart (and then literally trampled -- I had shoe shaped bruises all over after the race) I was ableto make my way back up to 6th. I really appreciated the added boost that Race Day Boost adds.I notice in races that I use it I feel sharper come race day. I love the Hammer cycling shorts too, they’re actually more comfortable than any ones I have ever worn so I wear them all the time.

This year’s edition of what many consider tobe the world’s toughest endurance contest wasrecently completed. And, true to form, RAAM,a race that E-CAPS/Hammer Nutritionenthusiastically sponsors, proved once againwhy it is such a difficult race to complete. Ofthe 19 solo competitors who began the raceJune 20 in San Diego, only 8 completed the2958.5-mile course. One noticeable non-entrant was last year’s winner Allen Larsenwho, citing personal reasons, withdrew fromthe race during the week prior to the start.

This year’s winner was Slovenian Jure Robic, who finished 3rd in 2003, with an outstand-ing time of 8 days, 9 hours, 51 minutes, anaverage speed of 14.66 mph. Unlike a stagerace, the clock never stops once the racebegins, even during sleep breaks, making thisa phenomenally fast average speed, one of thefastest ever recorded. I talked with Jure andhis crew just before the start, helping themfinalize his nutrition program, and I knowthat he used Perpetuem, Hammer Gel, andEndurolytes during his speedy crossing.

Rookie Michael Trevino of San Diego took sec-ond with an impressive time of 8 days, 21hours, 6 minutes. Usually, first time entrantsin RAAM aren’t considered favorites for the

The 2004 Insight Race Across America : Proving Itself As The Worlds Toughest Endurance Event

v i c t o r y, but Trevino matched Robic’s pace formost of the race. Trevino is also an accom-plished ultra-runner with wins in suchprestigious races as theBadwater Ultra, the SanDiego One-Day Ultra, theLost Boy’s 50-mile ultra, and several others.

Rounding out the finisherswere former championWolfgang Fasching ofAustria in 3rd, then EnricoDeAngeli of Italy in 4th,Rob Kish of Port Orange,F L (who completed his 19th consecutive RAAM,an absolutely unheard of feat) in 5th, A n d r e wOtto of San Francisco, CA in 6th, Guus Moonenof Holland in 7th, and Randy Van Zee ofSheldon, IAin 8th. Interesting to note that bothMoonen and Van Zee are 52 years old.

E-CAPS/Hammer Nutrition was againwell represented in RAAM with race win-ner Robic using some of the HammerNutrition products during his effort.Other solo finishers using E-CAPS/Hammer Nutrition were Otto,Moonen, and Van Zee. E-CAPS/Hammer Nutrition was also well

represented in the team divisions, mostnotably with sponsored athletes GeorgeThomas and Terri Gooch, who took the win

in the two-personmixed team divi-sion in a time of 7days, 18 hours, 5minutes. In theeight-person cor-porate division,Team R2R-KaiserPermanente camein first, with manyof the team using a

variety of E-CAPS/Hammer Nutrition products.

1. Helmet Although I rarely see a lidless cyclist any-more, I know there are still some of you outthere cycling sans helmet. If you had theexperience I had last summer, you’d neverride again without one.

Riding well to the right on a striped, wideenough road, I took a 30 mph, four-ton dopeslap from the side-view mirror of a passingdelivery truck. The force literally drove meheadfirst into the asphalt. Cracked helmet? For sure. Able to finish the ride after get-ting checked out by the ambulance crew? Also yes. Same result if no helmet? Hardly. Not being one to ever ride without a helmet,I didn’t really thank my lucky stars (ofwhich I was seeing plenty) that I had it on.But I sure was glad the bike and I escapedserious damage.

The point is that even on wide, well-markedroads, even if you’re a great bike-handlerand always a safe rider, a truck’s gonna get

you some day. Don’t let your arrogance aboutdorky helmets ruin your life.

This year, after a less-consequential bumpfrom a flatbed truck, I’ve also gone to a clip-on rear-view mirror and a flasher on mybackside. If you use Hammer Nutrition prod-ucts because you care about your health, youought to also consider the health implica-tions of head trauma.

2. Hammer-Logo ApparelThis adventure befell me on the infamouslyunmarked, mismarked, and just downrightconfusing roads of rural North Carolina (“Ifyou need a map to drive in North Carolina, you shouldn’t be driving in North Carolina”says my nephew, an NC resident). Ridingfrom my wife’s ancestral family home insouthern Virginia, I attempted to ren-dezvous with her (in the car) on the way tovisit our daughter in Raleigh. A nice ride, butnot unsurprisingly, I fell victim to the notori-ous back roads. I was where I thought should

be, but even after an hour, no spouse in sight.Clearly, our meeting point did not share thecoordinates erroneously stated on the map.

Then a chap happens by, sees my HammerGel jersey, and offers me his cell phone. “Youuse Hammer Gel? That’s great stuff. Nomessy pouches.” A couple of quick calls, a lit-tle more waiting, and joyful reunion with mywife followed. As he drove off, I saw he had aHammer Nutrition decal on his window.

This was pork rind and tobacco country, nota locale where one would expect to find anathlete of any stripe, let alone anotherHammer Gel fan. Made for a great storywhen we finally made it to my daughter’sapartment later that night.

So be safe, wear your helmet, and if you don’tcarry a cell phone, at least wear a friendlyHammer Gel jersey!
