Part 7: Age of Terror, Era of Adventure(2070 to 2199)

2070◆ Gen. Brutus advises the Lawgiver to visit the Forbidden Zone and make peace with the Inheritors,

intending to seize Ape City once the Gestalt Mind imprisons the elder orangutan.Planet of the Apes #4: “Terror on the Planet of the Apes—Gunpowder Julius” (MC-c)

NOTE: In an article printed in Marvel’s Planet of the Apes #4, Chris Claremont places the “Terror” saga circa 3978 (the time of the first film), but all evidence indicates otherwise: Humans can speak, knowledge of mankind’s past remains prevalent, the Lawgiver is only the second ape with that title and so forth. Marvel’s own timeline in

issue #11 sets the story in 2070, so I have adhered to that placement.

◆ The Lawgiver, aware of the Inheritors’ existence, recognizes Brutus’ duplicity but still agrees to meet with them, hopeful of negotiating peace with the Gestalt Mind.

Planet of the Apes #11: “Terror on the Planet of the Apes—When the Lawgiver Returns” (MC-c)

◆ Jason and his friend Alexander (a human and chimp, respectively, both age 18) leave school early to hear a speech given by the Lawgiver. The orangutan pushes for equality between both species, announcing that he’ll be gone indefinitely. He leaves in charge a fellow orangutan named Xavier, whom many consider inept. Meanwhile, Ape Supremacists (hooded simian racists bent on scaring humans into submission) assault Alex’s father for befriending humans, then burn Jason’s parents, Beth and David, to death.

Planet of the Apes #1: “Terror on the Planet of the Apes—The Lawgiver” (MC-c)

◆ Alex joins Jason on a quest to find the killers, and both are captured by Ape Supremacists. When Brutus’ wife Zena discovers his involvement with the hate group, Brutus kills her, framing Jason for the crime. Mounting pressure from human-hating factions in Ape City forces Xavier to sentence Jason to death. Alex frees him from jail, and the two head for the Forbidden Zone to find the Lawgiver and clear Jason’s name.

Planet of the Apes #1: “Terror on the Planet of the Apes—Fugitives on the Planet of the Apes” (MC-c)

◆ A gorilla named Tyrinius almost spots Alex and Jason hiding in a tree, but they slip by. At Zena’s funeral, presided over by the Minister of the Second Life, Brutus uses his wife’s death to spread anti-human bigotry. Jason accuses Brutus of murder, and a guard shoots his shoulder with a crossbow. He and Alex attempt to lure Xavier to Brutus’ camp, but the racist group slaughters Xavier’s peace officers and pin these murders on the youths as well.

Planet of the Apes #2: “Terror on the Planet of the Apes—The Forbidden Zone of Forgotten Horrors” (MC-c)

◆ Jason and Alex take refuge in the Forbidden Zone, where they encounter a mutated race of timid, shaggy, ape-human hybrid primates. A crane captures one creature and heads into a tunnel. Jason and Alex follow it to the Caverns of the Inheritors, where mutant humans use the beasts to build war machines. There, Alex and Jason find themselves trapped between mutant-drones and Ape Supremacists.

[132] — Timeline of the Planet of the Apes

2220◆Gorilla and human armies fight a savage battle that litters the Forbidden Zone with corpses. Two

soldiers survive: Jovan, a human, his legs shattered, and Solomon, an ape, his arms broken. Too injured to fight, they call a truce so both can survive. Jovan strides a sling atop Solomon’s back, each compensating for the other’s lost limbs. Together they cross the desert, battling mutated beasts and harsh weather. Caught in a lightning storm, they take refuge in a cave, where an ape-human hybrid named Mordecai offers shelter and healing salves. When they resume fighting, he binds their hands, urging them to resolve their differences peacefully, then evicting them when they persist. Seeing the body-strewn battlefield, they finally put aside their hatred and vow to end the war. Bands of mutant humans and mutant apes square off to protect their ridges of rubble, however, and Jovan and Solomon both die in the crossfire.

Planet of the Apes #5: “Evolution’s Nightmare” (MC-c)

◆This battle serves as a balancing point in history, where human devolvement most clearly coincides with ape evolution. It is also the last major gasp of human aggressiveness.

Planet of the Apes #11: “Outlines of Tomorrow—A Chronology of the Planet of the Apes” (MC-m)

2220 To 2750◆The remaining sentient humans become a slave culture, tolerated but disrespected in gorilla-

dominated ape society. Exploration flourishes, as populations expand in all directions. Land is tamed and cultivated with slave labor, outposts are established and contact is made with other surviving tribes. A few minor wars break out, sparked by gorilla aggressiveness, but peace otherwise reigns as energies are channeled into retaking the planet. The cultural heritage of Caesar’s Ape City gains widespread popularity, with regional governments modeled after the Lawgiver/council mold. Still, some bands of renegade humans continue to harass ape outposts.

Planet of the Apes #11: “Outlines of Tomorrow—A Chronology of the Planet of the Apes” (MC-m)

Long before 3085◆A tribe of reclusive humans, the Delphi, takes refuge within a mountain in Philadelphia’s Forbidden

Zone. In the ruins of Independence Hall, the Delphi worship the Declaration of Independence, awaiting the fulfillment of a prophecy that saviors shall descend from the sky and lead them to a promised land where all creatures live in harmony. A similar legend forms among the apes, who name this area the Mountain of the Delphi. Some ape scholars wonder if the Delphi might be a missing link between humans and apekind.

Planet of the Apes—4 Exciting New Stories #1: “Mountain of the Delphi” (PR-r)

NOTE: This placement is conjectural, as no specific date is provided—just that it happened centuries before the TV series, set in 3085.

c. 2260◆Dogen, future Lawgiver of the Primacy, is born.

The Forbidden Zone #1: “Part One—Forbidden Knowledge” (AC-c)

3084◆Telemon, a chimpanzee farmer, finds a radio transmitter buried on his farm in northern Arizona.

Thinking it a holy relic, he cleans it up and brings it home, where he and his family worship the device as a “god-thing.” Recognizing it to be the creation of an advanced intelligence—and fearful that the village’s dogmatic religious leader, Syrinx, will deem the radio evil and take it from them—Telemon keeps it secret from others outside the family.

Planet of the Apes: “A Fallen God” (CB-u)

NOTE: This episode was never filmed, but the script is available online at Hunter’s Planet of the Apes Archive.

◆The council passes the Human Control Laws, which impose a strict curfew and prohibit humans from leaving their villages without a pass. This makes humanity even more placid. In response, the United Freedom Force (UFF) increases its activity. Though labeled a terrorist group, the UFF—consisting of apes and humans unhappy with societal inequities—usually sticks to non-violent protests, so the government takes a light hand in dealing with it. For eight months, Urko searches for the UFF headquarters, but to no avail.

Planet of the Apes: “Hostage” (CB-u)

NOTE: This episode was never filmed, but the script is available online at Hunter’s Planet of the Apes Archive.

before 3085◆For an unspecified length of time, Galen lives in Nufort, a human-less village administered by an

orangutan named Ponar. Galen’s closest friend there is a chimpanzee named Shako. Another chimp, Naten, is not so fond of him.

Planet of the Apes (Authorized Edition) #1: “A Promise Kept” (BW-s)

◆ In the early part of the Ornan Period, several hundred humans are found dead of an unknown illness in the Rural Zone. Once known as malaria, the disease is named the Sleeping Sickness because it causes its victims to convulse horribly and die. For years, the entire sector remains barren.

Planet of the Apes episode #12: “The Cure” (CB-t)

NOTE: Dating these events is impossible. The episode, set in 3085, places them in the Ornan Period of ape history, but does not specify when that period occurs.

◆A male orangutan named Doswa serves as leader of the Central City High Council, later remembered as one of Zaius’ most admired predecessors.

Planet of the Apes episode #7: “The Surgeon” (CB-t)

◆Lucian, a chimpanzee tired of seeing humans mistreated, forms a clandestine group sympathetic to man’s plight. Befriending several humans, he secretly shares ape knowledge with them. This angers other apes, including his brother Sestus, a member of an anti-human hate group called the Dragoons.

Planet of the Apes episode #8: “The Deception” (CB-t)

◆The ruins of New York City become a safe haven for those hiding from Urko’s forces. The security chief wishes he could destroy the city to stop fugitives and traitors from taking refuge there.

El Planeta de Los Simios #4: “Ultrasonic” (ET-c)

“Then god, in his wrath, sent the world a savior, miraculously born of two apes, who had descended on earth from earth’s own future. And man was afraid, for both parent apes possessed the power of speech. so both were brutally murdered. but the child ape survived, and grew up to set his fellow creatures free from the yoke of human slavery. Yet, in the aftermath of his victory, the surface of the world was ravaged by the vilest war in human history. The great cities of the world split asunder and were flattened. And out of one such city, our savior led a remnant of those who survived, in search of greener pastures, where ape and human might forever live in friendship, according to divine will. His name was Caesar—and this is his story in those far-off days.”

—The Lawgiver

A dystopian future. The enslavement of an entire race. An upside-down world where apes became the masters and mankind lived as savages. And into that future society walked several time-lost astronauts, who found the world they once knew had become a planet of apes.

Six films and two television series comprise the Planet of the Apes canon—but the story does not end there. A line of novels, comics, audio tales and more have helped flesh out the mythos, exploring facets never revealed onscreen.
