Note to teachers:
Another book which enables students to
compare and graph the sizes of insects is
Tumblebugs and Hairy Bears: Exploring In-
sects with Children by Suzanne Samson.
The glossary at the end of the book provides
characteristics, habitats, and measurements
for each of the insects featured in the book.
Younger students will enjoy the colorful pic-
tures and easy text of the “Math Start” book,
The Best Bug Parade by Stuart Murphy. Smil-
ing bugs on parade compare their relative
size: long, longer, longest.

Note to teachers:
Nikolai Andreivich Rimsky-Korsakov was
born in Russia in 1844. He began to study
piano at age six and attempted his first com-
position at age nine. In 1900 he composed
the opera The Tale of the Czar Saltan which
contained the orchestra interlude “The Flight
of the Bumblebee,” a short piece depict-
ing a prince who becomes a bee and stings
his villainous relatives.

Note to teachers:
Insects have all sorts of ways to protect
themselves from predators. Here are a few
examples:
• The click beetle has two big patches of
color on its back that look like big eyes.
• The click beetle gives a loud click when
touched. It tucks up its legs, drops on the
ground, and lands on its back where it
“plays dead.” Then it clicks again, snaps
into the air, and attempts to land back on
its feet to escape.
• When the silkworm moth spreads its
wings, it looks like two big eyes.
• Wasps and honeybees sting their
predators.
• Ladybugs do not taste very good.
• The monarch butterfly is bitter and
poisonous.
• The stink bug gives off a foul odor when
disturbed.

Note to teachers:
Most of us use the word “bug” to describe
tiny creatures such as insects or spiders. All
bugs have a hard covering, a kind of skel-
eton, on the outside of their bodies, They also
have jointed legs and piercing and sucking
mouth parts. However there are several im-
portant differences between insects and
spiders (arachnids). Insects have six legs,
three body parts, and one pair of antennae.
Spiders have eight legs, two body parts, and
no antennae.
Note to teachers:
A book with colorful photographs that ex-
plains metamorphosis is the “Nature’s
Children” series book Monarch Butterfly by
Bill Ivy. Another book with simple yet infor-
mative text and remarkable photographs is
Insect Metamorphosis: From Egg to Adult

Note to teachers:
Where the Butterflies Grow by Ryder and
How to Raise Butterflies by Norsgaard will
help students know exactly what to look for
as they observe their butterflies. These books
also provide helpful details about caring for
butterflies raised indoors.
A classroom kit — The Butterfly Garden
— is available from Ira J. Cooper, Inc., In-
sect Lore Division, PO Box 2137, Woodinville,
WA 98072 for $19.95.
Note to teachers:
The second drawing may have to be slightly
adapted as students draw. For example, the
luna moth’s lower wings are long and nar-
row. Tell students to add whatever details they
must to make the specimen look realistic.

Note to teachers:
Most garden centers have experts avail-
able to direct you to a wide variety of plants
that will attract butterflies. They can also pro-
vide advice with regard to planting and care.
Some centers publish pamphlets “Attracting
Butterflies to Your Garden,” or offer garden-
ing books that provide the same information.
Call ahead to arrange a tour of the gardencenter and a short lecture about the plants
and environment that will attract butterflies.
Before you make the trip, determine and dis-
cuss with students how much space your
school has to offer for a garden, the amount
of sunlight received each day, and how much
time the class will be able to devote to the
care of the garden. The garden center’s hor-
ticulturist can help you choose the plants
that will most likely thrive in the area you
have available for planting. A useful refer-
ence book is The Butterfly Garden: Turning
Your Garden, Window Box or Backyard into
a Beautiful Home for Butterflies by Mathew
Tekulsky (Harvard, MA: The Harvard Com-
mon Press, 1985).

Note to teachers:
Students who want to learn more about silk-
worms will enjoy the easy text and wonderful
photographs of The Silkworm Story by
Coldrey. A more difficult text with equally stun-
ning photgraphs is Silkworms by Sylvia
Johnson (Lerner, 1982).

Note to teachers:
If students are using semantic maps for
the first time, it is especially important to
model the procedure for them on the board
or overhead projector. Once students under-
stand the process, it will be easier for them
to construct semantic maps of their own with
less guidance from you.

Note to teachers:
Ask students if they have ever noticed the
spots on a ladybug. How is it that a lady bug
has an odd number of spots and yet is sym-
metrical in shape? It is because the
odd-numbered spot is shared by both wings!
Have students take a look for themselves.
One example can be found on the Ladybug
reproducible found on page 45. The ladybug
has 13 spots, six on each wing and one shared
by both wings.

Note to teachers:
A word map is an excellent strategy for
teaching vocabulary. The graphically orga-
nized information enables students to
visualize a word’s meaning. Because word
maps are fun to make and actively involve
students in thinking about a word, vocabu-
lary is more likely to be learned than it is with
simple fill-in-the-blank exercises.Word maps
also guide students in learning what it is that
makes a good definition for a word, by pro-
viding them with questions that help create a
complex definition of a word: What is it? What
is it like? What are some examples?

Note to teachers:
A great book to use in the classroom when
discussing homophones is Truman’s Ant
Farm (Ratigan), a funny story that recounts
the adventures of young Truman as he en-
deavors to sort out the difference between
“ants” and “aunts” in a surprise birthday
gift.

Note to teachers:
An idiom is a phrase or expression which
means something different from what the
words actually say. For additional examples
of idioms and an explanation of how they
came to be used, check out Mad as a Wet
Hen! and Other Funny Idioms and Punching
the Clock: Funny Action Idioms, both writ-
ten by Marvin Terban. Students who have read
the Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish
or books such as The King Who Rained and
A Chocolate Moose for Dinner by Fred
Gwynne will be familiar with the use of play-
on words and homophones.
Note to teachers:
Insects Are My Life by Megan MacDonald
is a very funny picture book that tells the
story of a girl named Amanda and her desire
to grow up to be an entomologist.

Note to teachers:
Readers Theatre is an interpretive oral read-
ing activity that can involve all students in the
classroom. Students take their “line” from a
story, poem, or picture book and speak the
exact words written in the text. Because read-
ers practice before presenting, Readers
Theatre allows both skilled and struggling
readers alike to be successful. Readers The-
atre is not a play. There are no stages or sets,
no elaborate costumes, or memorized lines.

Note to teachers:
Many science reference books for children
provide instructions for making and main-
taining ant farms. Two entertaining new
books listed in the bibliography at the end
of this guide are The Magic School Bus
Gets Ants in Its Pants by Joanna Cole and
Planet Ant by the editors of Planet Dexter.
Both books introduce readers to the social
structure of an ant colony, the habits and
skills of ants, and weird ant trivia. Both in-
clude a small plastic ant farm and sand.
The Magic School Bus selection includes
a coupon to send away for your very own
ants.

Note to teachers:
Reading aloud the book, In the Tall, Tall
Grass by Denise Flemming, may heighten
student interest in a nature walk. Pet Bugs: A
Kid’s Guide to Catching and Keeping
Touchable Insects by Sally Kneidel, ex-
plains how to find and keep more than 25
common insects.
Note to teachers:
The ladybug of the familiar children’s nurs-
ery rhyme...
“Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home.
Your house is on fire, your children at home.
One is upstairs making the beds,
The others downstairs are crying for
bread.”
...is also known as a ladybird. During the
Middle Ages these beetles were dedicated
to the Virgin Mary and called Beetles of Our
Lady because of their value in eating the pests
that destroy crops.

Note to teacher:
The strategy known as K-W-L-S represents
a four-step procedure intended to assist teach-
ers in (1) helping students access background
knowledge and (2) engaging student interest.
The strategy involves four basic steps: deter-
mining what students know, what they want
to learn, recalling what they did learn, and
assessing what they have yet to learn. De-
signed originally to help students as they read
expository text, the K-W-L-S strategy helps to
structure consecutively the viewing of the
Bugs video and the learning that takes place
in the Bugs unit, enabling students to actively
take responsibility for the direction of their
own learning.
