THE UTRGV FIELDHOuse

Located on the northeast side of campus, the UTRGV Fieldhouse is the home of the volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs. Built in 1969, the UTRGV Fieldhouse currently has seating for 2,500.

In the fall of 2010, the university completed $650,000 in renovations that included a new main court, new seating, sponsorship signage and improved locker room hallways.

In October 2012, a $250,000 video board and replay system was installed, courtesy of Coca-Cola Refreshments.

In October, 2013, the university updated the building’s HVAC and infrastructure system and also completed a $50,000 renovation of the men’s and women’s basketball team lounge and locker rooms.

In May 2015, the court was refinished to include the new UTRGV marks and colors, as well as a new sponsor.

The UTRGV Fieldhouse is part of Health and Physical Education Building 1, which is 58,387 square feet and also contains the majority of the athletic department’s office space, as well as office/classroom space for the department of health and kinesiology, a swimming pool, and locker rooms.

The FutureThe department of intercollegiate athletics is seeking a naming rights deal for the UTRGV Fieldhouse that will allow for upgrades and enhancements in a way that will improve fan and player experience.

Refurbishments of the UTRGV Fieldhouse will focus on improving amenities to enhance the fan experience while preserving the current seat configuration and seating capacity.

A front porch to the Fieldhouse will be constructed, including a new entryway with a lobby and dramatic atrium.

The first floor construction will include an external operations suite, ticket office, restrooms, concessions stand, team store, sports medicine center and strength and conditioning center.

The second floor construction will include an athletics administrative suite and a V Club room for special events.

Throughout the Fieldhouse, new branding and graphics will be updated to celebrate the tradition and success of UTRGV volleyball and basketball.

VICTORY Center

For today’s student-athletes, training and conditioning is a year-round commitment. Balancing the rigors of competing at the collegiate level with the demands of the classroom is one of the greatest challenges our student-athletes face. That is why it is so essential that the department of intercollegiate athletics provides our student-athletes with access to hands-on academic support.

Located in the Academic Services Building, the Victory Center is an integral part of the life of our student-athletes and has a vast amount of services and assistance available.

The Victory Center is structured after the principles of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, which is created to provide student-athletes with five basic components: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Community Service, Career Development and Personal Development.

UTRGV has approximately 250 student-athletes, including approximately 150 freshmen and transfers, who are required to attend study hall and specially designed workshops that assist them in acclimating to college life and living away from home. Student-athletes must dedicate anywhere from six to 10 hours each week to study hall as they work toward their ultimate goal, graduation.

The Victory Center provides student-athletes access to computers, tutors and other resources. The Victory Center, which is open six days a week (Sunday-Friday), houses a computer lab, a learning lab, areas for both individual and group study, and offices for the Academic Advisement Center staff.

Each student-athlete works with their college advisor to make sure that they are enrolled in the correct classes to graduate. The Victory Center staff verifies the classes to ensure that the student- athlete is working towards their degree, making yearly satisfactory progress and meeting grade point average requirements.

THE UNIVERSITY

A New University with a Long HistoryThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions. UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen,

McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.

UT Brownsville and UT Pan AmericanThe shared history of The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1973, when Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

1927-33Edinburg College was founded as a two-year

community college governed by the Edinburg School District. The original building housed 200 students and today is listed as a historical site in the city of

Edinburg, the county seat for Hidalgo County.

1933-48Edinburg Junior College, as the only institution of higher learning in South Texas, experienced

rapid growth in its early years, prompting administrators to pursue the first name change.

1948-52Edinburg Regional College was moved from

the original four-acre site to a 186-acre campus a few blocks west. During the

1950s and 60s, the campus was purchased in parcels at a cost of $677,000.

OUR STORY

In the Fall of 2015, the landscape of higher education in the U.S. was forever changed. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley enrolled its inaugural class of first-year students, and this region now shines to the rest of the world as a global leader in higher education, bilingual education, health education, biomedical research, and emerging technology.

UTRGV combined the talent, assets, and resources of UT Brownsville, UT Pan American, and the Regional Academic Health Center, along with other resources, to create a new model of excellence in education. Here is the story of this significant journey:

Students enrolled at UT Brownsville and UT Pan American were automatically admitted to UTRGV.

Eleven colleges and schools formed the academic foundation for UTRGV, including:

•College of Medicine•College of Health Affairs•College of Sciences•College of Liberal Arts•College of Fine Arts•College of Engineering and Computer Science•College of Business and Entrepreneurship•College of Education and P-16 Integration•Honors College•Graduate College•University College

Every accomplishment in life begins with a choice. The bigger the choice, the bigger the accomplishment. When it comes to your potential, your goals, and your future, choosing the right university is as big as it gets.

At UTRGV, we offer a learning experience that we believe cannot be matched.

1952-71Pan American College made its transformation from a junior college to a four-year university in the early 1950s. The name Pan American was selected to reflect the institution’s desire

to bridge the cultures of North and South America and to reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the university.

1971-89Pan American University saw the student population diversify during the 1970s, reflecting a predominantly Mexican-American population.

The Wall Street Journal credited then President Dr. Miguel Nevarez with creating a Hispanic middle class for the South Texas region.

In 1973, PAU began to expand, opening a campus in Brownsville.

1989-2015The University of Texas-Pan American was

established in 1989 after the successful and historic merger of Pan American University with the

University of Texas System. In 1991, the Brownsville campus formed a separate

instiution, the University of Texas at Brownsville.

1962-63 NAIA National Championship Team

During the 1962-63 season, Pan American College was on the “outs” with all of its opponents in the NAIA postseason tournament.

Head coach Sam Williams watched as his Broncs squad out-scored, out-rebounded, out-hustled, out-worked and out-played every opponent they faced en route to capturing the NAIA National Championship at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

Led by All-American Luke Jackson, the 12th-ranked Broncs went into the NAIA postseason tournament as one of the nation’s hottest teams, winning 17 of their final 19 games of the season. Pan American proved to be untested in its first three contests, hammering Peru State (83-48) before beating Stetson (64-41) and Northern Michigan (99-73).

The Broncs biggest test of the tournament came in the NAIA National Semifinals against Grambling State and its dynamic duo of Hershell West and future Hall of Famer Willis Reed. West came into the contest tied for eighth in the nation in scoring (26.0 points per game) while Reed was second on the squad (21.2 ppg).

The Broncs knew that West and Reed would score their points, 34 and 31 respectively, but Pan American refused to let the rest of the Tigers shooters get the best of them. Grambling State got only 18 total points from the rest of the squad.

Jackson and Mitchell Edwards were a dynamic duo in their own right, as the pair tallied 26 of the Broncs’ 36 first half points. In the second half, Jackson and company continued their strong play and outscored the Tigers 54-51, en route to pulling off one of the biggest upsets in the tournament with a 90-83 victory.

Jackson finished the game with 33 points and 13 rebounds while Edwards added 24 points and eight boards. The Broncs had four players score in double-digits, including Jim McGurk (14 points) and Marty Urand (12 points). In the national championship game, Pan American was pitted against 10th-ranked Western Carolina. The Catamounts held their own against the Broncs, trailing 59-52 with a little over nine minutes remaining in the contest.

Over that span, Western Carolina focused the majority of their attention on Jackson, who finished the game with 25 points and 25 rebounds. That proved to be the Catamounts’ downfall as Edwards and McGurk lit up the floor and combined to score 10 of Pan American’s final 13 points. Edwards ended the contest with 20 points and 12 rebounds while McGurk added 12 points and 10 boards. Pan American won the championship 72-63. Jackson earned MVP honors after averaging 26.4 points and 18.6 rebounds throughout the tournament. The 1962-63 Pan American squad is one of just three Texas Universities to win a Collegiate Basketball National Title. In 2000, the team was reunited for the first time and honored at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The Broncs were again reunited in February 2007 as they were inducted with the inaugural class into the UTPA Hall of Fame. Williams and Jackson were inducted individually as well.

The Broncs were honored by UTPA in 2013, as the team was brought back during homecoming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their title. Additionally, Jackson’s retired jersey was unveiled in the rafters and there was a moving ceremony honoring the late Williams.

Footage of the entire game can be seen online at YouTube.com/GoUTRGV.

The Greatest of All-Time

A 6-9 power forward/center out of San Marcos, Luke Jackson is widely considered to be the greatest player to every wear this program's uniform.

Jackson spent three seasons with the Broncs, leading them to the 1963 NAIA National Championship as a junior by scoring 25 points and pulling in 25 rebounds to beat Western Carolina 73-62. Throughout the NAIA National Tournament, Jackson averaged 26.4 points and 18.6 rebounds per game to earn the Most Valuable Player award.

It was one of three NAIA National Tournament appearances for the Broncs during Jackson's time there, as he led the Broncs back to the NAIA National Championship game in 1964 as well.

A two-time All-American, Jackson ranks first in program history in career field goal percentage (.547), free throws made (443) and free throws attempted (605), second in points scored (1,813), rebounds (1,393) and field goals made (685), and sixth in field goals attempted (1,252). His name is also in the Top 10 for single-season records 17 times and single-game records eight times.

Shortly after graduating, Jackson went on to help Team USA win the gold medal at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo.

Selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the fourth overall pick of the 1964 NBA Draft, Jackson went on to play in 522 games across eight seasons in the NBA, averaging 9.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. During the 1964-65 season, Jackson was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team and the NBA All-Star Team. He averaged a career-high 14.8 points and 12.9 rebounds per game. Jackson was a starter alongside Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain on the 1966-67 76ers squad that won the NBA Championship.

Jackson was inducted into the inaugural UTPA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007. His jersey number, 54, which was the first to be retired in school history, one of just two to be retired in school history, and the only one to be retired across all sports, hangs proudly in the rafters of the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

1967-68 NCAA Division II Tournament Participants

The 1960s were a time of change for Pan American athletics. After transitioning from being a junior college to a four-year institution in 1952, Pan American College became a member of the NAIA. In 1962-63, the Broncs held dual membership with the NAIA and NCAA Division II. The Broncs began transitioning to the NCAA Division I level in 1965-66 as the men’s tennis team made the jump and immediately reached the NCAA Championships. The men’s basketball team didn’t follow until 1968-69, allowing them to take part not only in the 1965-66 NAIA District Playoffs, but the 1967-68 NCAA Division II Tournament as well.

In the program’s only NCAA Tournament appearance, the Broncs knocked off Jackson State in the first round 96-73 before falling to Trinity in the Southwestern Regional Finals 87-83 in overtime.

The Broncs finished the season 21-6. In those six losses, the Broncs’ average margin of defeat was just 5.67 points per game. Even more impressively, though, is that after starting the season 2-3, the Broncs went 19-3 the rest of the way, including winning streaks of eight and 10 games. The Broncs’ lone regular season losses during that time were on the road and by three points each. One of the games was even an overtime loss.

Part of the reason for the Broncs’ success was defending home court, as the Broncs went 16-0 in Edinburg, including victories in the Pan American College Holiday Tournament over Emporia State, Illinois State and Louisiana Tech. It was one of just three times in program history that the Broncs went undefeated at home.

The Broncs averaged 90.4 points per game, the third highest total in program history, and UTPA Athletics Hall of Famers Otto Moore and Fred Taylor led that attack. Moore led the Broncs by averaging 24.6 points and 18.5 rebounds while shooting .510 from the field. Taylor averaged 21.4 points and 8.4 rebounds while shooting .485 from the field.

It was the Broncs’ seventh postseason appearance in eight years, capping off the most successful stretch in program history.

The Father of Broncs Basketball

An inaugural member of the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007, Sam Williams was also inducted into the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame. Known as the “Father of Broncs Basketball,” Williams served the University as an educator for more than three decades, and coached the Pan American College and Pan American University Broncs to 11 winning seasons, including four of at least 20 wins, in 15 years (1959-73). He remains the program’s all-time winningest coach with 244 victories.

Williams led the Broncs to their first and only national championship, winning the NAIA title in 1963. The very next season, he coached the Broncs right back to the championship game in what was their fourth-straight post-season appearance. Williams earned the NAIA National Coach of the Year award that year. Williams oversaw the Broncs' transition into an NCAA Division I program. In their final

season before the move, the Broncs won 21 games and reached the 1968 NCAA Division II Southwest Regional, where they won their first round game. Shortly after the transition, Williams became a member of the NCAA Basketball Officials Committee. Williams was a pioneer in collegiate athletics in the late 1950s, as he was one of the first coaches to integrate his basketball program. One of the black players Williams recruited and coached was UTPA Athletics Hall of Famer Luke Jackson, a two-time All-American who was the MVP of the 1963 NAIA National Tournament and went on to play in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers for eight seasons (1964-72) while making the 1964-65 NBA All-Rookie Team and NBA All-Star Teams. He also won an Olympic Gold Medal. Jackson was one of 10 players to be drafted by an NBA team while Williams was the head coach. Four of those 10 played in NBA regular season games, including Howard Montgomery (San Francisco Warriors, 1962-63), Otto Moore (Detroit Pistons, 1969-71 and 1974-75, Phoenix Suns, 1971-72, Houston Rockets, 1972-73, Kansas City Kings, 1973-74, New Orleans Jazz, 1975-77) and Fred Taylor (Suns, 1970-71 and Cincinnati Royals, 1971-72). The Broncs rededicated the UTPA Fieldhouse center court in Williams' honor on Nov. 20, 2010. UTPA President Dr. Robert S. Nelsen also surprised Williams by naming him head coach emeritus. Several members of the 1962-63 Broncs then presented Williams with the original NAIA National Championship banner, which had been hanging in the UTPA Fieldhouse since it was built. Williams is one of only two coaches in school history to earn emeritus status, with the other being baseball head coach emeritus and UTPA Athletics Hall of Famer Al Ogletree.

Williams passed away on Oct. 22, 2012 at the age of 88 due to natural causes. As part of the Broncs’ tribute to Williams, a plaque was hung in the UTPA Fieldhouse to help keep the memory alive.

1980-81 NIT Participants

In NBA circles, Kenneth “Apple” Green goes largely unnoticed. The 6-8, 207-pound second round pick was traded twice before putting on a uniform and only suited up for 10 games when he joined the New York Knicks. Though his life as a pro was short, there was a time when Green was a revelation. From 1979 through 1981, he was the cornerstone of some of the most successful teams in Broncs basketball history. The Broncs went a combined 39-17 and earned a spot in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) during the 1980-81 season, the Broncs’ first and only postseason berth at the NCAA Division I level. During that run, the Broncs scored a major coup in the college basketball world when, over the course of four days, the Broncs knocked off an eventual national champion and several future hall-of-famers during the 1980 Maui Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The tournament was capped by a 66-60 win over the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers, led by none other than Hall of Famers Isaiah Thomas and Bobby Knight, arguably one of the biggest wins in program history. “Pan American was just a better team than we were,” Knight told the media after the game. “They stuck it to us at the very beginning.” And when the second winningest coach in NCAA basketball history says your team was better than his, you know you did something right.

Green, later voted the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds, outscoring Thomas by seven points on a night when the Broncs held the future NBA legend in total check. “I don’t think our guys were scared of Indiana,” Green told The Monitor. “We see Indiana on TV. But that motivates us to play better. [It] brings out the best in us.”

And the Broncs were their best throughout the tournament. They opened the tournament against a Marquette University team featuring current Los Angeles Clippers head coach and future hall of famer Doc Rivers. In a nail-biter, the Broncs held on for a 71-70 win that came down to a free throw from the most unlikely of shooters.

With time winding down and the potential for overtime, Marquette looked to intentionally foul and regain possession. Their candidate was Curtis Glasper, a strong player in his own right, but who also sported the team’s worst free throw shooting percentage. With the game in his grasp, Glasper made the free throw. Against the Hoosiers, the Broncs were able to shut down the usually dominant Thomas by taking away his ability to drive to the net and forcing him to distribute the ball. The Broncs were also able to take advantage of an unusually undisciplined Indiana team. Pan Am made it to the line 27 times compared to the four times Indiana did. And when they got to the line they made it count, finishing the game with a .741 free throw shooting percentage. Though the Broncs lost to host Hawaii University and had to settle for third place in the tournament, they left knowing that their efforts were not left unrewarded. “If we beat Hawaii people say, ‘so what,’” Green told The Monitor. “But we beat Indiana and Marquette, and people know about them.” Later in the season, the Broncs knocked off Missouri Valley champion Wichita State, a team that had been riding an unbeaten streak. The Broncs finished the season 19-10 and earned a bid to the 1981 NIT, where they lost to eventual NIT champion Tulsa. Mike Carroll led the NCAA in assists with 275, the fourth highest total in program history. If there was one negative that could be found among those two seasons it’s this: the Broncs missed out on postseason play more than they deserved.

During the 1979-80 season, Pan American went an impressive 5-3 against the 80 teams that made the postseason in either the NIT or NCAA Tournament the season before while going 20-8 overall.

Tournament berths or not, the victory over Indiana and the success of those two seasons changed the course of program history and showed that the Broncs can play with anybody. It’s a sentiment that the program holds to this day, an identity that is defined by a strong work ethic and a belief that through honest effort, they too can hang with Hall of Famers.

UTRGV PResident

Dr. Guy BaileyGuy Bailey, Ph.D., was named Founding President of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in May of 2014.

Prior to being named President of UTRGV, he served as President of the University of Alabama and of Texas Tech University; Chancellor of the University of Missouri Kansas City; Provost and Executive Vice President at The University of Texas San Antonio; Dean of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; Chair of the English Department at Oklahoma State University and the University of Memphis; and as a faculty member at Texas A&M and Emory Universities.

During his time at Texas Tech, the university met the criteria established by the Texas State Legislature for participation in the National Research University Fund; enrollment grew by 3,905 students (14%); research expenditures grew by $89.9 million (170%); and graduation rates increase by five percentage points.

During his tenure at UTSA, the university was named an emerging research university by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board; 16 new doctoral programs were added; external funding for research more than doubled; enrollment grew by more than 40%; and graduate enrollment grew by almost 50%.

While Bailey was at UMKC, the university completed a $200 million capital campaign and built or gained approval for $175 million in new construction. From 2010 to 2012, Bailey served on the Board of Directors of the NCAA and on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Big XII athletic conference. He has also served on the Board of Trustees of Midwest Research Institute since 2007.

Bailey continues to do research on language change and variation. His research with his late wife, Jan, has been featured in a front-page article in the New York Times, on National Public Radio, on CNN Headline News, on BBC Radio, in Texas Monthly, and in the San Antonio Express News. Since 1984, Bailey has brought in over $1 million in external funding for his research.

Chris KingChris King has served as Director of Athletics since October 1, 2009. As the leader of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Chris King’s proactive style and leadership have

helped the department reach new heights and lay a solid foundation for future growth and success. Inspired by the growth and innovation of the Rio Grande Valley, King has made it UTRGV Athletics’ goal to EleVate the standard of Division I Athletics and proudly represent the university in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. In order to accomplish that goal, King unveiled a new five-year strategic plan in Feb. 2017. The focus of this strategic plan is to improve the student-athlete experience and lead UTRGV Athletics to become the industry standard of the WAC and Division I. The five main goals include student success and experience, the 3 F’s: facilities, finance and fundraising, competitive excellence, promoting a culture of integrity, and branding and engagement. King also redefined UTRGV Athletics’ culture, vision, core values, expectations and beliefs, under the mantra of, “16 Sports, 1 Team.” Part of the new culture is ensuring an end product of academic success, social responsibility, competitive excellence, fan experience, community engagement and leadership development. UTRGV Athletics has seen considerable elevation in academics, competition, facilities, revenue generation, diversity and equity, and community service during King’s tenure. Much of the elevation has occurred since King secured a bid into the Western Athletic Conference starting with the 2013-14 season, ending a period of 15 years without access to an automatic qualifier to NCAA Championship-level events. AcademicsThe department pushed its cumulative grade point average (GPA) to 3.14 in 2016-17, with a record 146 student-athletes earning 2017 Spring AD Honor Roll recognition after a then-record 141 student-athletes earned the honor in the fall for boasting a GPA of at least 3.0. Student-athletes continue to maintain higher GPAs and graduation rates than their peers in the general student body. The student-athlete graduation success rate has jumped from 54 to 77 percent over the last eight years.

CompetitionUTRGV won its first WAC Volleyball Tournament Championship and Individual WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships in 2016-17 while also adding a title in women’s outdoor track & field. Since joining the WAC in the fall of 2013, UTRGV has won two team and 16 individual WAC Championships. Making the postseason is becoming a regular occurrence, as the volleyball and women’s tennis teams made their respective NCAA Tournaments in 2016 and the women’s basketball team has now made three-straight postseason appearances, winning its first-ever postseason home game in March of 2017. Other successes in 2016-17 include women’s cross country earning the first regional ranking in program history, men’s soccer making the WAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed in its second season of play after an 18-year hiatus, and women’s soccer posting a winning record in just its third season of play. The 2016-17 academic year also featured the launch of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union, a rivalry series pitting UTRGV against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in 12 sports to determine South Texas bragging rights. #BeatCorpus FacilitiesUnder King’s leadership, UTRGV Athletics has completed numerous facilities upgrades. In 2016-17, UTRGV completed a pair of projects, including the Coach Al and Joann Ogletree Plaza and upgrades to the Victory Center. The Coach Al and Joann Ogletree Plaza features a statue of legendary Baseball Head Coach Emeritus Al Ogletree and a plaque of late wife, Joann, on top of a bricks placed in the shape of a baseball at the entrance to UTRGV Baseball Stadium. UTRGV Athletics secured a $100,000 grant from the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program Committee to make immediate improvements to the Victory Center with the purposes of directly influencing student-athletes’ progress toward degree and APR requirements. This injection of funds provided upgrades for facility renovations, additional technology, and professional development efforts. Over the last four years, UTRGV Athletics has received over $300,000 in grants from this NCAA program. New BuildsThe $4.55 million UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex opened in Oct. 2014 to host the first season of women’s soccer and then, in 2015, the return of men’s soccer. The complex also hosted the 2017 WAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Capital ProjectsKing arranged the donation of the $6.5 million baseball stadium from the City of Edinburg to the university in Oct. 2014, and has since conducted significant renovations as part of a capital project, including the installation of a new video board and scoreboard. King moved UTRGV Athletics into a new strength & conditioning facility in 2013-14 and completed a capital project in the spring of 2015 to acquire new equipment. RenovationsKing has completed numerous renovations to the UTRGV Fieldhouse, including the addition of the largest indoor video board in the Rio Grande Valley (34.45'x11.81') by securing a $250,000 gift from Coca-Cola Refreshments in 2012. King has since resurfaced the court and upgraded the basketball team and locker rooms with new lockers, furniture, carpeting and graphics. The Orville Cox Tennis Center has been upgraded during King’s tenure, with six resurfaced courts, new fences, new windscreens, new walkways and a new entrance. King also oversaw the renovation of office space for women’s basketball, tennis, golf, and track & field, creating additional office space for five head coaches and three assistant coaches. Major GiftsOver the last eight years, King has secured numerous six and seven-figure major gifts through gifts for capital projects, planned giving and endowed scholarships. Most recently, King brought in a $1 million planned gift from Dan and Terry Martinez in June 2017. Revenue GenerationKing and the fundraising and external sales staff increased fundraising by 198 percent and grew corporate sponsorship revenue by 157 percent in 2015-16. Ticket revenue increased by 44.67 percent in 2016-17. The increase in ticket revenue was due in large part to a 24.33 percent increase in attendance at ticketed sports, including a 23.80 percent increase in men’s basketball attendance. King also renegotiated the University licensing royalty revenue agreement to increase licensing revenue by over 200 percent in 2015-16. Diversity and Equity King’s main priority upon becoming Director of Athletics was advancing his belief in a culture of integrity, including rules compliance, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

King completed the Title IX/Gender Equity Plan by starting women’s soccer in 2014, adding 7.0 scholarships to fully fund men’s track & field, 1.8 scholarships to fully fund baseball, 1.5 scholarships to fully fund men’s golf, and 1.5 scholarships to fully fund men’s tennis. Another part of the plan included the creation of two new head coaching positions, as the university went from having one coach for both tennis teams and one for both golf teams to having separate coaches for each team. King also set up the track & field and volleyball teams to add an assistant coach. Community ServiceAfter completing the 15th-highest total of community service hours in NCAA Division I and 20th-highest overall in the NCAA Team Works Competition for NCAA DI, DII, and DIII athletic departments and student-athletes in 2015-16, UTRGV athletics set an all-time record in service and volunteering, outreach and engagement, campus engagement, and networking hours of service in 2016-17. Leadership PositionsKing’s accomplishments led to his selection as a current member of the NCAA Division I Nominating Committee and the former NCAA Division I Legislative Council. King also serves as an executive board member of the I-AAA Athletic Director Association and the chair of the I-AAA Athletic Director Association Mentoring Committee. King also holds multiple leaderships postions with the WAC, serving as the 2017-18 WAC council chair, as well as the strategic plan chair and the men’s basketball chair. Prior to UTRGV, King spent seven years (2002-09) at the University of Alabama as an Associate Athletic Director. King’s athletic career began in 1995 at Campbell University as a compliance assistant. He then moved to Liberty University, where he was the Director of Compliance and Special Events. He later worked at the University of Central Florida, where he served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Internal Operations. King is married to the former Alicia Flowers, who is the Associate Vice President for Development at UTRGV. They reside in McAllen with their two daughters, seven-year old Kylie Marie, and four-year old McKenzie Elizabeth.
