You can also make use of the classes at Wakefield and Bradford also for the same cost for maximum flexibility and benefit. Car Parking Offer - HASSRA Leeds

Only £3 to park all day at the Clarence Dock Multi-Storey Car Park (up to 24 hours). Town Centre Car Parks (TCCP) is pleased to offer staff huge discounts for day parking in our secure, fully-staffed Multi-Storey which is open 24 hours / 7 days. Where does an employee who wishes to participate in this scheme collect a pass from?

Participants can collect a pass from the Car Park office which is located next to the exit lanes by pre-senting the ID badge.

Alternatively participants can request a pass to be hand delivered to the work address. Simply include full name, office address and telephone number in an email to [email protected] e.g. name: John Smith, address: DWP, X Division, Room 2S25, Quarry House, LS2 7UA and telephone: 07799 779977.

There is no administration or set up fee. The number of passes allocated to participants may be limited and they are therefore allocated on a first come first served basis. A waiting list may be operated subject to interest levels.

How does this scheme work?

Once you have your discount parking pass you will not need to validate or use a paper ticket again. Insert the pass into the slot at the entrance barrier and make sure that the magnetic strip is facing down.

Don’t press the green button or use any other tickets or vouchers – this may mean you have to pay the full price.

Make sure you park centrally in the allocated bays. Reverse parking is often the safest. Before returning to your vehicle, go to one of the car park’s Paystations, insert your discount parking

pass into the machine and pay. You must pay before you get back into your car. When leaving insert your discount parking pass at the exit barrier.

Several animal re-homing charities urgently require your help to rehome healthy animals that may get put to sleep

The charities below are overflowing with many healthy cats & dogs of all ages that maybe put to sleep if they can’t find good homes for them soon. Once a cat has become familiar to its new surroundings all it requires is a safe environment away from busy roads and a loving owner. Cats require very little supervision, as they are very independent animals. Please note that a dog requires more space & attention than a cat therefore, you need to have the accommodation & time to look after & walk a dog. The RSPCA will neuter & ID chip all animals that are rehomed for a nominal fee, which is much cheaper than going to your local vet. Your local RSPCA branches are (RSPCA Leeds (Near the Whiterose Centre), Wakefield & District Branch, 29 Manor Road, Wakefield, WF2 8DD - http://www.rspcaleedsandwakefield.org.uk/) & RSPCA Sheffield, 2 Stadium Way, Attercliffe, Sheffield S9 3HN - 0114 2898050 - www.rspcasheffield.org who continue to rescue, care for, rehabilitate and find loving new homes for the many animals that are in need of our help. If you can give a cat a loving home then please contact the RSPCA re-homing officers on 07785 750492. If you can give a dog a loving home then please contact the RSPCA re-homing officers on 07743 773871. The RSPCA is an independent charity and relies entirely on the generosity of the local community for them to be able to continue there work therefore, if you would like to make a donation then please contact them on 0800 085 33 55. Please also note that the following charities also desperately need your help to re-home cats & dogs of all ages. 1. Haworth Cat Rescue, The Farm, Lower Pierce Close, Cross Roads, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD22 9AQ.

Tel: 01535 647184 for more details or visit http://www.haworthcatrescue.org/ 2. Cat Protection League, Dewsbury, Wakefield & District. Tel: 01924 261524 or visit http://

www.cats.org.uk/?gclid=CP2D8_PFmqsCFdQNfAodkhnQew 3. Barnsley And District Animal Welfare. They have 3 Kennels. All dogs go out vet checked, fully

vaccinated, with a neutering voucher and 4 weeks free insurance. Tel: 01226 388764 for more details or visit http://badaw.org/

4. The Sheffield Cat Shelter. Tel: 0114 272 4441 between 1pm and 4pm. http://www.thesheffieldcatsshelter.org/ is a small, local charity which has cared for cats and kittens since 1897. The shelter never puts a healthy cat to sleep; all the cats that come into our care are seen by a vet and given any treatment that they require, irrespective of cost. Before adoption, all of our cats receive the appropriate vaccinations and medicines and are neutered and microchipped. As well as looking for loving homes, the Shelter also welcomes new volunteers to get involved in many different aspects of Shelter life.

Please note that you can donate items such as unwanted blankets, towels, cat/ dog beds & cat/ dog food etc. to your local animal charity directly via the above animal shelters. Many thanks for your help & support. Mick Keenan DWP Animal Re-Homing Contact. [email protected]

St Wilfrid’s Centre, Sheffield Request for unwanted/unused

gardening equipment and vegetable seeds As part of the Community 10000 initiative within the Department, the SOA Information Services Team from Information, Governance and Security (based in Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle) spent a day volunteering for a local Charity. The St Wilfrid’s Centre on Queens Road in Sheffield is a charity that works with the statutory services and other agencies to support the homeless, the vulnerable and those who are socially excluded. We had a really enjoyable day helping them on their allotment and would highly recommend a Community 10000 event to other teams. St Wilfrid’s relies heavily on donations and we wanted to provide some additional support after completing our voluntary work. We therefore would like to collect any unwanted or unused gardening equipment and vegetable seeds that the charity would be able to make best use of. If you have any items that you would like to donate which you think would be useful to the charity then please email [email protected] with the details.

Taking You Back In Time The reign of Edward the Second is less than a year old & the body of his most noble father Edward the First (known as Langshanks, Hammer of the Scots), has yet to decay into dust. The country, so long at conflict with its neighbours, is turning against itself & is on the verge of civil war. As knights match their skills in single combat, political intrigue stalks the land. Who will you support, Edward II, King of England or Thomas, Earl of Lancaster? More importantly, who will win? Tournée Tournée is a small, friendly society which aims to have fun while presenting a realistic vision of the period. We have adopted the 14th century, specifically the period between the years 1300 & 1325. What Can I See & Do During a Tournée Show? - Cheer on the knights, squires & ladies as they take part in the archery competition; - Learn how a knight was dressed & armed in full tournament armour; - Watch a popular 14th century tournament called a Beauhort; - See the knights demonstrate & explain how to use a medieval sword; - Support your favourite knights as they challenge each other individual duels & witness the most dangerous form of tournament – the Grand Melee; - Ask the knights, ladies & squires your questions & have your photograph taken with them; - Discover what it is like to wear a medieval helmet & hold a sword & shield.

Tickets from £60.00. Visit WWW.THEOPEN.COM to book HASSRA Leeds are giving their members the unique chance to watch The Open live on one of the days at a subsidised price. The course at Royal Lytham & St Annes was built in 1897 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest, and most exacting links golf courses in Britain. Though a relatively short course, the routing of the holes and the huge number of bunkers — some 200 in all — make it one of the most challenging of the Open venues. This Lancashire course could hardly have had a better introduction to Championship golf than the victory by legendary American amateur Bobby Jones when The Open was first played there in 1926. Bobby Locke (1952), Peter Thomson (1958) and Bob Charles (1963) were the next three winners before Tony Jacklin signalled the revival of British golf in 1969 with the first home victory for 18 years. Renowned players such as Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Tiger Woods have all played and won on this prodigious course.

OFFER - HASSRA Subsidy £20 per member/associate member

HASSRA Leeds invite you to organise your own tickets, enjoy the event and provide proof of purchase and HASSRA Leeds membership for each ticket after the event to receive the advertised refund on the cost of your ticket. Offer applies to HASSRA Leeds members, associate members, and their children (under 16) who have associate membership. You may only claim for a ticket for one day of the championships. WEDNESDAY 27th June 5.30pm in the Restaurant Meet from 5.00pm in the

WoodPecker Bar

Presented by : Mike Ferguson Wines from Burgundy The wine club will be taking 34 travellers to Burgundy this year in June/July, and to start us off, we will be holding a special wine club event to look at Burgundy wines in advance of the trip. We will be tasting 3 whites and 3 reds, mainly from the central areas of Cotes de Beaune and Cotes de Nuits. Our aim is to search out some of the better value wines in Burgundy - you can often get wines from less fashionable areas that easily match up to the prestige wines (which also have prestige prices). We have wines from across Burgundy, including a top white from St Aubin, and a highly rated red from Nuits St Georges. This is a great opportunity to taste some excellent wines, and the cost to HASSRA Leeds members will be around £10. If you would like to join us, please contact any of the committee for further details. Whats Coming Up? Friday 13th July Tess Brooke presents Summer Wines Tess has selected an Italian Rose, a New Zealand Pinot Grigio, a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, a French Chardonnay, a New Zealand Pinot Noir and a Spanish Rioja for her tasting. All are recommended to be drunk with seafood or cold meats with fresh summer salads, except the Rioja which it is suggested is accompanied with cheese – particularly manchego cheese. So bring your choice of food and come and taste 6 wines suitable for summer drinking - for around a fiver..! SPECIAL OFFER REMINDER: Don’t forget our special offer : Any HASSRA Leeds member who attends the wine club for the first time pays only half price for the event. And if you decide you like it enough to join the club, the night is free. You can just turn up on the night, but it helps our planning to know potential numbers in advance, so if you would like to join us, or you’d like more information, please contact one of the committee.

Saturday 2nd June Knaresborough Round Part 1 – 12 or 15 miles The Knaresborough Round meanders scenically around the villages surrounding Knaresborough for 20.5 miles. We will start in Knaresborough, walk out to the closest point on the path (Bilton Hall) and proceed clockwise to Coneythorpe via Scotton and Ferrensby. The full walk (including out and back to the Round) and officially ending at a fantastic café in Knaresborough, is 15 miles. For those wishing to shorten the walk to 12 miles, there is a bus from Coneythorpe back into Knaresborough at 15:54. (If enough people are attending by car, I will arrange a car shuffle leaving vehicles at Coneythorpe; please let me know in advance so I can arrange this.) Although the terrain is easy, all walkers will need good walking boots and weatherproof clothing due to the distance, and lack of opt out options. (Walkers who are not appropriately kitted will not be permitted to join the walk.) You should also be prepared for good weather and carry sun protection and a minimum of 1½ l of drinking water (several small bottles are better than 1 large.) There is no pub stop, and I can’t guarantee shops, on this route; so all walkers must carry a packed lunch, several snacks and a hot drink. Meeting point and time The start point for this walk is the Conyngham Hall car park by the Nidd on the A59 in Knaresborough. Grid ref: SE 344571. Please be prepared to start walking (or car shuffle) at 09:30. (The walk will start here at 10:00 if there is a car shuffle.) The cost to park is £4 to be shared. Transport Public Transport is available between Leeds and Knaresborough. Please let the walk leader know if you would like/can offer a lift on a petrol sharing basis. Lunch Bring a packed lunch. See notes above.

To Book your place Please contact the leader, Luisa Panetta, by email [email protected], hone (0113 232 4562) by Thursday 31st May at latest. Luisa’s mobile, for emergency contact on the day, is

07757 739096.

Bowland Fells from Chipping Saturday 16th June The walk This 7 mile walk in the beautiful, unspoilt Forest of Bowland ascends steadily from the pretty village of Chipping through quiet farmland onto open moorland. Once we are on the top of Far Snape Fell we have wonderful views over Morecambe Bay and the Lakes. Making our way over the peat moor of Wolf Fell we then descend steeply down the ‘cone’ of Parlick and back to the village. If the weather is not suitable for climbing up to the moors, we will do an alternative lower level walk of similar length. Meeting point and time Meet at 10.15 in the car park at Chipping (Postcode PR3 2QH) for a prompt start at 10.30. It is the only car park (cost £1.80 for all day) in a small village and is reached by driving through the village, past the church and café – the car park is on the right. There are toilets available at the start of the walk. Transport There is infrequent public transport to this walk, and car sharing is recommended. Please let the leader know if you would like/could offer a lift. Lunch Please bring a packed lunch and snacks as there is no pub en-route. At the end of the walk there are several pubs in the village (but may not be serving food at the time of our return) and the excellent Cobbled Café is open until 5pm. For those who are able to arrive a little earlier for the walk the café is open from 10am. Clothing We recommend that you wear walking boots or stout shoes and ensure that you are suitably clothed and carry waterproofs and a spare warm layer in your rucksack.

To book your place on this walk If you would like to join us, please let me know by Thursday 14 June.

WEEKEND IN WOOLER - Report! Our weekend of walks started with a Friday afternoon stroll of about 4 miles, ably led by John, and started from Wooler Common. We soon encountered Humbleton Hill (quite steep, but thankfully not too high), which had an iron age fort on it’s summit. It was also the site of a battle between the English and the Scots in 1402 which resulted in a decisive English victory. We descended the hill and returned to the car park. The more the energetic walkers walked back to Wooler along the St Cuthbert’s Way, whilst the rest drove back to the Tankersville Hotel, our base for the weekend for a welcome cup of tea. After a pleasant breakfast on Saturday morning 15 walkers lead by Nigel set out on an 8 mile walk. The weather was dry although a little windy. The walk constituted a figure of eight. The first loop involved a walk up Yeavering Bell to be met at the top by sun, wind and glorious views to the west of snow covered hills. We descended the hill and walked up the river valley to a waterfall before returning to the cars after a very pleasant walk. The evening was completed by a wholesome meal and one of Tony’s quiz’s before an early bed time to prepare for one of Wendy Brown’s energetic walks. Sunday saw a continuation of the good weather and 21 people met for an 8 mile walk up the College valley, ascending Wideopen Hill, a trip into Scotland on the Pennine Way before returning to England, civilisation and the car park via St Cuthbert’s Way. A good meal, another quiz finished off what had been an excellent day. On Monday, our final day, people were pffered the opportunity of a pleasant walk around Hulne Park, the parkland estate of the Duke of Northumberland attached to Alnwick Castle. A 7 mile walk on ready made tracks offering a lovely walk with interesting features. Northumberland is an ideal area for a short break for those wishing to walk and sightsee. The Tankersville Arms Hotel was an ideal base offering a friendly atmosphere and wholesome meals

In today’s special report, the zombie apocalypse begins in earnest as a group of survivors leave the Baxter Building in Downtown Manhattan in search of supplies. With the shambling zombie hordes overrunning the city will any of them make it back alive!

The group, consisting of Lenny the mechanic; Fingers, the escaped murderer and Reverend Timothy Archer were played by club members and Donovan, a prison guard who obviously came along to keep an eye on Fingers. Loading their weapons the group emerge onto the debris strewn streets of New York in search of guns, weapons and, more importantly, prune juice. Advancing quietly, they soon encounter their first zombies and an abandoned army truck.

It is a brand new running club, we are looking for new members to join us. To start with we will meet on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime, 12:15pm at the Forum Reception. Come along and try a session, if you like it all we ask is that you sign up for a years membership (at a cost of approx £1!) A typical session would involve a run along the canal, everyone would start together irrespective of ability, you run at your own speed until the whistle blows and then everyone turns around and heads back. The aim is that we all finish at the same time J. Advanced runners can of course set their own daily goals if they wish. There will be a run leader who will facilitate each session and someone will stay at the back so no one gets left behind! Length of run will be decided on the day but it will usually be between 30-45 minutes. We could incorporate some interval training into the run too. BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form. 1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks

from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer. 4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where

there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed. 5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and

travelers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "non-member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to

participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending

HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
