ISO 15504
Project Start
SPICE is started as an ISO project to create a Technical Report (fast track)
Technical Report (ISO/IEC TR 15504:1998, parts 1-4 and 6-9, part 5 is from 1999)
The “AUTOSIG –Group”1 started to develop Automotive SPICE
ISO/IEC 15504 Part 1-4 were released between 2003 and 2004
(TR 15504 had to be rewritten because of non compliance to used terminology)
Automotive SPICE Process Reference Model and Process Assessment Model were published
“Hersteller Initiative Software”2 agreed on a minimum set of processes (HIS-
Scope) to be fulfilled by their suppliers.
Since 2007 this car manufacturers exclusively accept ASPICE Assessments.
Automotive SPICE is maintained by the VDA AK 13 Continental Automotive is represented by Mr. Markus Amtmann, Corporate Q

› SPICE is a standard (ISO 15504) which determines a unique proceeding for
assessing
and improving development processes
› SPICE is a process capability model
› Normative only ISO 15504:Part 2 „Performing an assessment“
› Other parts of ISO 15504 are informative
› According to the applied Process Reference Model (e.g. Automotive)
SPICE can be adapted to the needs of particular industries

Level 1 Performed
Level 2 Managed
Level 3 Established
Level 4 Predictable
Level 5 Optimizing
Level 0 Incomplete
Incomplete
(Probably) Chaotic processes
Performed
Processes are intuitively performed, incoming and
outgoing work products exist
Managed
Processes and work products are
managed, responsibilities are identified
Established
Defined processes are tailored to
specific projects, resources are
managed
Predictable
Metrics for the measurement and control of
process performance and outcomes are
applied
Optimizing
Quantitative measures are implemented to
continuously improve the process

Supplier
Rating Rating during Volkswagen Assessment Consequences
Aall processes reaches (VW) Capability
Level 2
supplier is fully trusted to be able to fullfill all
requirements regarding process quality and prject
quality (= fully sourceable)
Ball processes reaches (VW) Capability
Level 2 and at least one sticks to (VW)
Capability Level 1
supplier has weaknesses in process and/or product
quality (= sourceable if measurements are defined to
reach fully (VW) level 2)
B~one process doesn't reach (VW)
Capability Level 1 but signed addon-
contract
supplier is sourceable but has signed an addon contract
which defines milestones and penalty payments
Cone process doesn't reach (VW)
Capability Level 1supplier is not sourceable (= new business hold)

Volkswagen - Supplier rating C and sourcing by VW
11 July 2016
14 Martin Kemeter, © Continental Business Consulting
Evaluation via:
› Assessment
› Technical Revision
Possible Result:
› One or more
process(es) doesn’t
reach a VW Level 1
› Supplier will be
ranked as
C-Supplier
› Consequence is:
NEW
BUSINESS
HOLD
Sourcing of new business with C-Supplier status:
› VW sends side letter
› Supplier has to establish an improvement project
› Supplier hast to ensure the execution of the improvement actions
› Milestones are defined by VW within the side letter
› If milestones not reached, VW claims for compensation (up to several million €)
A side letter leads to a B~ rating and the supplier can be sourced
But if the milestones can’t be reached, VW claims for compensation
