Annual Gifts ReportJuly 1, 2015- June 30, 2016

Dear Friends,

On graduation day, shaded by the spreading branches of the copper beech, we welcomed this year’s se-niors and their families in seven lan-guages: Dari, English, French, Kin-yarwandan, Korean, Mandarin, and Spanish. Our graduates spoke mov-ingly, often in English they polished at Oakwood, of the knowledge and skills they gained during their time at school and of the community they found and nurtured. It was a moving testimony to their accomplishments and their excitement about going out into the world.

This has been a year of joy, of excite-ment and of loss. We welcomed Chad Cianfrani as the 38th head of Oak-wood. He and board president Libby Moroff led Oakwood in imagining its future with a steady warmth, with imagination and with a com-

mitment to real growth. The solar project is built and will go on line shortly, stewarding our financial re-sources as well as the environment. Our new four season green house is complete enabling students to expe-rience a hands-on curriculum that gives them a tactile appreciation for the foundation of their food.

Our great loss came in February with Libby’s death. Her gentleness, breadth of intelligence, and depth of commitment were a wonderfully vivid example of the values at Oak-wood’s core.

Oakwood Friends School is an ex-traordinary community. It is so small, and yet it brings together and nourishes and is nourished by people of such a breadth of experiences of the world. It is because of your gen-

ACORN SOCIETYHave you thought about providing for Oakwood Friends School in the future? One way that members of our com-munity help secure the School’s future is by including Oakwood in their estate plans. Over the School’s long his-tory, Acorn Society members have made important gifts that continue to provide critical resources for the School, building endowment and enhancing programs and campus facilities. Each gift has strengthened the School and benefits our students every day. Consider supporting Oakwood’s mission into the future with a legacy gift.

The Acorn Society was initiated with a gift from the estate of Louis S. Bock, honoring his wife, Caroline Reagan Bock ’29, and her parents, former Headmaster William J. Reagan and his wife Florence. Reagan was Head of School from 1916 to 1948.We are grateful to the following for including Oakwood in their estate plans:

Gifts received by the school from the estates of Acorn Society members are listed as Memorial Gifts. All bequests are applied to the school’s general endowment, except in special cases as determined by the Board of Managers. The school’s endowment represents a permanent source of support for the future strength and well-being of the school. Anyone who desires further in-formation on the school’s planned giving program is invited to contact Elaine Miles, Director of Development & Alumni Affairs.

If you were a donor to Oakwood Friends School in 2015-16 and your name was inadvertently omitted, misspelled or listed in the wrong place, please forgive us and call with the correction to the Alumni Office at (845) 462-4200, x 225.

The Libby Moroff Leadership ProgramWe are proud to announce the new Libby Moroff Leadership Program at Oakwood Friends School. Initiated through a grant from the Phyllis and Howard Schwartz Philanthropic Fund and generous gifts from family and friends, the endowed program will create a permanent tribute to the life and work of Libby Moroff ’54, former Board President and devoted friend of Oakwood.

Libby was an exemplar of good leadership in her volunteer work at Oakwood and devoted her adult life to furthering the principles of social justice and equality for all. She was a woman of action and inspired everyone around her with quiet humor, a kind heart and a relentless can-do attitude. We will do our best to infuse the program with Libby’s spirit as well as her name as we help our students develop their own leadership skills.

Thank you to our alumni gathering hosts.

Hudson Valley Gives Oakwood Friends School participated in the 1st regional day of on-line giving – Hudson Valley Gives – on May 18th. This 24 hour online fundraising event gave local organizations the opportunity to reach new potential donors and boost their visibility through social media. Oakwood raised $1,650 that day from 19 donors including alumni, parents and current and former faculty. Thank you!

10 Day - $10 ChallengeOakwood’s Young Alumni Committee launched a “10 day - $10 challenge” that included videos of faculty and administrators on Facebook during the last 10 days of the Annual Fund drive in June. This fun initiative received a lot of positive feedback from young alums who enjoyed seeing their former teachers, coaches and dorm parents on-line.

Benedict Foundation GrantOakwood Friends School received a $40,000 grant from the Benedict Foundation for Independent Schools to expand its Sustainable Agriculture Program and implement a four-season garden. The program has allowed the school to produce vegetables throughout the school year and serve as an instructional space. The Sustainable Agriculture Program was created in 2014 by middle school science teacher Miriam Straus.
