WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE LSU SCHOOL OF MUSIC

Welcome to the LSU School of Music, host of this year’s LMTA state convention. Even though the pace gets a bit hectic, it is always exciting when it’s our turn to have you all here in Baton Rouge. But we are all quite accustomed to busy schedules, and once the activities begin, it is wonderful indeed to reconnect with colleagues from around the state, to kick back and enjoy great music making from our students, to take ad-vantage of informative sessions, and to get a basic “battery recharge” that these events seem best able to provide. I’m particularly excited and honored also to welcome back to Baton Rouge my friends and former School of Music colleagues, convention artist Jennifer Hayghe and pedagogy clinician Steve Betts – two of the finest in the business. You may notice that our studios and a few practice rooms now house several new Steinway pianos, the result of a loan program administered by the Stein-way Corporation through Hall’s Piano Company of New Orleans. We’re em-barking on an all-Steinway fundraising initiative for which this loan program serves as a sort of prelude. It’s a big step, and perhaps you, our guests, will sense how this initiative has injected a bit of electricity into the air. Despite the challenges facing higher education, we at the School of Music don’t have any problem finding lots of good things to celebrate, not the least of which is having you visit our campus for a few days. I enjoy holding onto an expression that I paraphrase here: “Music has the power to express things that other art forms cannot.” It’s so simple and, for most of us, provides the only justification we need to pursue a musical life. On behalf of my colleagues - especially our amazing convention coordinator Pamela Pike, Dean Laurence Kaptain, and our wonderful students, welcome again to the LSU School of Music.

LMTA LOCAL ASSOCIATION OF THE YEARBATON ROUGE MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION

1950 - 2011

Baton Rouge Piano Teachers Association was the original name of the small group of teachers that organized in 1950. Naomi Kennard Singleton held the first meeting at her home. Goals included planning interesting programs, as well as providing a forum to exchange ideas. Those goals are still in the forefront for the current organization. Clinicians from the early years included David Carr Glover, Frances Clark, Hazel Cobb, William Gillock and Jane and James Bastien. The group became affiliated with Louisiana Music Teachers Association on March 21, 1973. A program affiliated with State and National Certification of teachers through the LMTA District Rally offered opportunities that encour-aged professionalism and expertise on both the teachers’ and students’ parts. On March 8, 1995, BRPTA voted to change its name to Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association with the intent of being more inclusive to music teachers of all disciplines. A variety of events, both competitive and non-competitive, have taken place over the years. They include the BRMTA Tournament (piano and strings), Piano Concerto Competition, which gives students an opportunity to perform with the Louisiana Youth Orchestra, and the Allen-Fleming Scholar-ship Auditions. The Concerto Competition was expanded in 2009 to include a piano duo event, making it more accessible to a greater number of students. A summer music camp scholarship is also available to qualified students. Events focusing on community service include the Halloween Musicale, Theory Carni-val and Christmas performance opportunities. Members also participate in the LMTA District and State Rallies, the LFMC Ensemble and Solo Festivals, and the LSU Bach Contest. Teachers participated in a Monster Concert, beginning in 1990, for many years. A student group was added in 2000. The Monster Concert was revived to commemorate the 60th anniversary of BRMTA in 2010. In 1997 a student chapter was formed at LSU in accordance with MTNA guidelines. Efforts are made on a continuing basis to provide mentoring and support for the chapter, and student members are now included in the teacher directory. The Florence Day Memorial Fund was established in 1998 for the purpose of funding teacher education and workshops. A Jazz Event was also held that year featuring Tony Caramia from Eastman and Willis Delony from LSU. In 2008, BRMTA established a website including information about all events, as well as a teacher directory. Named by MTNA as the “Outstanding Local Affiliate” in 2006, Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association continues to expand and re-think its goals and objectives as it strives to make a lasting impact on the community that it serves.

MTNA OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD 2011SUE STECK-TURNER, NCTM

Sue Steck-Turner moved to Lafayette in 1983 from Oswego, New York where she had been an associate professor of piano at the State University of New York at Oswego for 14 years. In addition to her college teaching, she directed the Class Piano Program for Children at the university, served as an adjudicator for various auditions and festivals, and concertized both as a soloist and collaborative pianist. In 1982 she was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of fifty to be so honored in the state of New York.

She has maintained a private studio in Lafayette since 1983, teaching as many as 70 students and specializing in very young children and exceptional learners. She also taught at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) as an adjunct professor for five years. Ms. Steck-Turner holds a B.M.E. from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) and a M.M. in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland where she studied with Roy Hamlin Johnson, Stewart Gordon and Nelita True. Additionally she has studied with Frank Glazer at the Eastman School of Music and with Albert Hirsh at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. As the author of Music for the Mini (Heritage Music Press) and numerous articles, she has given workshops and presented papers throughout the United States. Ms. Steck-Turner is certified as a Master Teacher by the Music Teachers National Association and the Louisiana Music Teachers Association. She was honored as the LMTA Outstanding Teacher in 1999 and as an MTNA Foun-dation Fellow in 2008. She has served LMTA as President-Elect, President, Immediate Past President, and currently serves as VP/Certification. She is the South Central Division Certification Commissioner for MTNA and has also served on the MTNA Nominating Committee. Sue is married to I. Bruce Turner, an archivist at UL-Lafayette, and is the mother of two daughters: Jessica, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, and Kathryn, an interior designer. In addition to her teaching activities, she is a member of the Chancel Choir at First Presbyterian Church where she also serves as alto soloist and substitute organist. She is the chairman of the CUPS (Communities Uniting in Prayer and Service) Basket Ministry where she directs the making of over 600 Christmas and 300 Easter gift baskets filled with donated, refurbished goods which are given to families in need of financial as-sistance.

LMTA OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD 2010 KATHERINE TOBEY, NCTM

Katherine Tobey is a native of Chicago and graduate of Louisiana State University. She studied Art His-tory at Barnard College in New York, then lived and worked in Florence, Italy before returning to Chicago to work as a buyer in an upscale women’s apparel store. After moving with her husband and three daughters to Baton Rouge in 1980, she became certified to teach the Yamaha music education program. While teaching

Yamaha group lessons, she began teaching piano privately and currently main-tains studios in her home and at Episcopal School in Baton Rouge. Tobey’s students have won scholarships at local and state levels and have been winners at many competitions including District and State Piano Rallies. They have also won awards at the state, regional and national levels in composition. Katherine credits joining Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association as the pivotal event in her professional life and has always welcomed the opportu-nity to serve the local and state organizations which have presented so many opportunities for her. She has served BRMTA as President, Member-at-Large and Rally Chair and is currently BRMTA’s Allen-Fleming Scholarship Audi-tions Chair and also serves as chair of Membership/Mentoring and co-chair of Theory Carnival. Ms. Tobey is LMTA’s Immediate Past President and Web-master. Past positions with LMTA include President, Secretary and MusicLink Liaison. She has also served as Composition Chair for LFMC, LMTA and MTNA’s South-Central Division and currently serves on the MTNA Nominat-ing Committee. In addition to presenting many sessions for LMTA conventions and for various local associations in Louisiana, Tobey presented at the 2010 MTNA National Conference in Albuquerque. She was honored at the 2011 MTNA National Conference in Milwaukee as a Foundation Fellow. She was the first recipient of National Certification through the new MTNA certification projects process. Ms. Tobey believes that every child deserves a high quality music educa-tion. Her students are given the opportunity to express themselves at the piano and participate in many non-competitive events. A colleague whose daughters Ms. Tobey taught writes, “I was able to observe and learn from her wonderful teaching techniques, her energy and enthusiasm, her love of the students and love of music, and her complete professionalism.”

2011 COMMISSIONED COMPOSERKEVIN GEORGE

A native of New Orleans, Kevin George is currently on the music faculty at Delgado Community College. Mr. George holds B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He also holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Tulane University in New Orleans. Mr. George’s compositional studies were with Roger Dickerson Sr. of New Orleans and Dinos Con-stantinides of Baton Rouge. Mr. George was recently a guest composer for the

Baton Rouge Community College ArtsFest 2011, where his Violin Sonata No. 1 was premiered. His Overture for Chamber Orchestra was premiered on a Louisiana Composer Forum concert in New Orleans in September 2010. Among George’s many works is Dialogue for Cello and Piano, which was premiered at the Baton Rouge Community College ArtsFest 2010. His Butter-flies, a work for solo vibraphone, was premiered at the Baton Rouge Commu-nity College ArtsFest 2009. George’s Symphonic Poem No. 1, Reflections in a Garden, an orchestral work, has been recorded by ERMMedia for the Millenium Project: Made in the Americas CD. In 2006, Mr. Delgado’s first CD, Subtle Changes, was released. It is a compilation of solo piano and electronic music. Two Songs for Cello and Piano will be premiered at the LMTA Conven-tion. This work features both piano and cello, creating a dialogue between the two instruments rather than a solo instrumental piece with piano accompani-ment. Song I, in ABA form, is fast and rhythmical and utilizes the full range of the piano and cello. Song II is slow, lyrical and reflective in nature. The cello and piano take turns playing the melodies. Song II also follows an ABA form, with the cello playing a small cadenza at the end.

LMTA CONVENTION ARTISTJENNIFER HAYGHE

Jennifer Hayghe has performed in solo recitals and made orchestral appearances throughout the world, in-cluding the United States, Europe and Asia. Hayghe received her bachelors and masters degrees and doctorate degree in piano performance from The Juilliard School, where she was the

last student of the legendary artist-teacher Adele Marcus. Hayghe won every award possible for a Juilliard pianist to receive, including the William Petschek Debut Award, resulting in her New York City recital debut at Alice Tully Hall. Hayghe's orchestral appearances include performances on numerous series with the National Symphony Orchestra, recent concerts with the Syracuse Sym-phony Orchestra, the Viriginia Symphony Orchestra, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and performances with various orchestras in the United States and abroad. She has performed in major chamber music series, including the Mu-seum of Modern Art's "Summergarden" series and Bargemusic in New York. She has also performed as a chamber musician in the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center and has taught chamber music throughout the United States and Central America. In addition, Hayghe has been frequently featured in radio broadcasts, including National Public Radio's Performance Today series, and on live broadcasts on the major classical radio stations of Washington, D.C., Chicago and New York City. Her first solo recording, Paintings From the Piano, featuring works by Debussy, Schumann and Mussorgksy, was recently released by Centaur Records. Currently an Associate Professor of Piano at Ithaca College, Hayghe has served as a featured artist at music teachers conventions in Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Virginia. She has performed and taught as a soloist and chamber musician at universities and colleges throughout the coun-try and was previously the Barineau Endowed Professor of Piano and Keyboard Area Coordinator at Louisiana State University. She lives with her husband, Robert McGaha, and son William outside of Ithaca, New York.

LMTA CONVENTION CLINICIANSTEVE BETTS

Steve Betts is Professor of Music at California Baptist University in Riverside, California. He has served on the faculties of Louisiana State University, Southern Nazarene University, and Wichita State University, and for fifteen years operated an independent piano studio in Wichita, Kansas. At LSU, he was awarded the School of Music Excellence in Teaching Award, and received both the Excellence in Teaching Award and Excellence in Faculty Performance Award at Southern Nazarene University. Dr. Betts received his B.A. from MidAm-

erica Nazarene College in 1982; M.M in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, Wichita State University, 1985; and Ph.D. in Music Education (Piano Peda-gogy), University of Oklahoma, 1995. In 2010, Betts began work as a managing editor for Clavier Companion magazine. He served as the Executive Director for the 2001 National Con-ference on Keyboard Pedagogy and was chair of the 2006 MTNA Pedagogy Saturday Committee. Dr. Betts has presented research and appeared as panelist and presenter at national conventions of the Music Teachers National Association and Music Educators National Conference, and his articles have appeared in Clavier Companion, American Music Teacher, Journal of Research in Music Educa-tion, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, and Keys. He is the lead author of the Time to Begin Activities Book and co-author of other publications for The Music Tree, part of The Frances Clark Library for Piano Students, published by Alfred Publishing Co., Inc. Recordings by Betts can be found on the Summit Records and Crimson Heart Records labels. He enjoys raquetball, reading, baking, and spending time with his wife, Doris.

LMTA CONVENTION CLINICIANSROBERT AND KAREN VANDALL

Robert and Karen Vandall teach 40 students in their independent piano studio in New Philadelphia, Ohio. They are both nationally certified (NCTM) by MTNA and Robert is a Foundation Fellow from the state of Ohio. Robert earned his B.M. in piano per-formance and Karen earned her B.M.E. in

piano and vocal music from Baldwin-Wallace College. They married one week after graduation and Robert went on to complete his M.M. at the University of Illinois. Robert taught music theory, music appreciation and applied piano and directed the select choral group at Mineral Area College in Flat River, Mis-souri, and Karen taught music in the county grade schools. Two years later the Vandalls moved to Springfield, Illinois where Robert established the group piano program at Lincoln Land Community College. He also directed the choir and taught music theory and literature. Wanting their two young sons to know extended family, they next moved to New Philadelphia, Ohio (where Karen grew up, and only 50 miles from Rob-ert’s hometown of Akron) and established an independent piano studio. Robert also began writing pedagogical pieces and has composed hundreds of solos and ensembles, many of which have been required repertoire for the National Fed-eration of Music Clubs Junior Festivals as well as state audition lists. Robert’s music is published by Alfred Publishing Company. Robert received the University of Illinois School of Music Alumni Associa-tion Distinguished Service Award in 1990 and both he and Karen received the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music Achievement Award in 1991. The Vandalls are active in their local Ohio MTA as current and past presi-dents. They are also active as junior club counselors and adjudicators for the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs Festivals and are in demand as clinicians. They have presented workshops in over 30 states and Robert has written commissions for teacher groups in 17 states. He was a faculty member of the International Workshop in Biarritz, France and both he and Karen have been faculty members for the Junior Student Seminars at the Rocky Ridge Music Center outside Estes Park, Colorado. The Vandalls’ hobbies include gardening, walking, running, and hiking, and they enjoy being the grandparents of five. They have been active in their church as choir directors, youth leaders, singers in the adult choir, Sunday school musicians and teachers, as well as serving on numerous committees.

His facility at the piano completely informed his keyboard compositions, but in a much more sophisticated manner than might be expected. This session will examine Liszt’s pianism and career, dissect some of the technical difficulties in his works and relate the unique experiences involved in performing them.

Upon completion of this workshop and possible revisions and/or additions, participants should be ready to submit their application to MTNA and complete their certification within a short period of time.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES

Christine Burczyk Allen teaches Applied Piano, coordinates Group Piano/Pi-ano Pedagogy, and serves as the choral accompanist for the Northwestern State University Chamber Choir. Her Doctor of Musical Arts degree is in Piano Per-formance from Louisiana State University.

Carla Breaux is a graduate of McNeese State University, with a degree in Pia-no Performance (concentration in Piano Pedagogy). She is nationally certified through MTNA and holds an LMTA Provisional Certificate. Carla is also a li-censed Musikgarten teacher. She is currently the Technology Chair for LMTA. Carla has an active studio in Lake Charles teaching ages birth through adult.

Paul Christopher is Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Low Strings at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches. He serves as Principal Cello of the Longview Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Principal Cello with the Peter Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, Oregon. His articles have been published in the Jacques Offenbach Society Newsletter, Strings, American String Teacher and Bass World. His recordings of the cello duos of Jacques Offenbach are available at www.cdbaby.com

Dinos Constantinides earned his Ph.D from Michigan State University in 1968 and has an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Macedonia in Thessa-loniki, Greece. He is Boyd Professor of Music at LSU, where he also serves as Coordinator of Composition. Dr. Constantinides is Music Director of the Loui-siana Sinfonietta, presenting 40 concerts a year, and has published extensively with Magni Publications.

Min-tzu Chao is a double bass instructor and performer. A native of Taiwan, Chao received her D.M.A in double bass performance in May, 2011. She is the bassist of Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Lafayette and an instructor with the LSU Performing Arts Academy.

Chao-i Chou, a native of Kaohsiung, has performed extensively both as a piano soloist and with double bass soloist, Yung-chiao Wei, in Asia, the United States, and Berlin. She completed her D.M.A. in Piano Performance and Literature as well as her Master and Bachelor degrees at the Eastman School of Music. She is an assistant professor at Shih-Chien University, Kaohsiung Campus, Taiwan. Her first CD, with bassist Yung-chiao Wei, is released on Centaur Records.

Yun-chieh Chou, a native of Taiwan, is currently a doctoral candidate in Double Bass Performance in the studio of Yung-chiao Wei at LSU. Chou was a final-ist in the 2010 LSU Concerto Competition. Her orchestral experience includes serving as bassist in the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra under Mariusz Smolij in Lafayette.

Matthew Daline is Assistant Professor of Viola at Bowling Green State Univer-sity, Ohio. He received degrees from the Julliard School and Yale University and did doctoral work at the State University of New York, Stony Brook. Since his viola debut in Carnegie Hall, Mr. Daline has performed worldwide as a solo-ist and is currently Principal Violist of the Baton Rouge Symphony and Opera Louisiane.

Raul Gomez is a Costa Rican orchestral conductor, composer, violinist and violist and was recently appointed Artistic Director of Kids’ Orchestra in Baton Rouge. He is a Sidney M. Blitzer violinist and a Huel D. Perkins Fellow in the D.M.A. program at Louisiana State University, where he studies under the guid-ance of Carlos Riazuelo (conducting) and Espen Lilleslatten (violin/viola).

Lin He, born in Shanghai, China, is Professor of Violin at LSU and Acting Con-certmaster of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. He has taught at Drake University, Houghton College, College of Wooster, Eastman School of Music and Pennsylvania State University. He holds a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music and is an active soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player.

Joan Jensen is on the faculty at Tulane University in New Orleans where she teaches music theory, applied piano and coordinates the piano classes. She maintains a private studio, serves as LMTA College Faculty Forum chair and is treasurer and corresponding secretary for the New Orleans Music Teachers’ Association. Joan is the local coordinator for the annual New Orleans Piano Institute sponsored by the Musical Arts Society of New Orleans.

John Madere, Bassist/Composer, is a doctoral candidate at LSU. He holds a B.M. from LSU and M.M. from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Madere is Principal Bassist with the Baton Rouge Symphony. He is equally at home in both the classical and jazz idioms and has recently released “Chemistry,” a CD of original jazz compositions. Steele Moegle is an Associate Professor at Louisiana Tech University. She teaches applied piano, class piano, music appreciation, and collaboration/ac-companying. She also serves as head of three areas: piano, collaboration/ac-companying, and music appreciation studies. In addition to teaching, she is well known throughout the region as a soloist and collaborator. Lina Morita, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has performed in solo and chamber music performances across the US and abroad. Recent performances include Washington Sinfonietta (DC), and the Lake Charles Symphony. Ms. Morita re-ceived her D.M.A. degree from the Eastman School of Music, M.M. from Rice University, and B.M. from Indiana University. She is currently Assistant Profes-sor of Piano at McNeese State University in Lake Charles.

Pamela D. Pike, PhD, NCTM, is Assistant Professor of Piano Pedagogy at LSU. Her pedagogical specialties include group teaching, teaching adults, and cogni-tion and instruction. Pike has presented at numerous national and international music conferences and has been published in Clavier Companion, American Music Teacher, Problems in Music Pedagogy, and the International Journal of Music Education.

Josue Ramirez, a native of Honduras, began double bass studies at age 16 with Maestro Ernesto G. Rodriguez at the Victoriano Lopez Music School. He has also studied with Maestro Carlos Vives from the Costa Rican National Sympho-ny and Professor Klaus Stoll from the Berlin Philharmonic. He received a B.M. from LSU under the instruction of Yung-chiao Wei, and an M.M. from NSU.

Simina Renea, a native of Romania, is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musi-cal Arts degree at LSU, majoring in viola performance with a minor in music education. She performs with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, and Sinfonietta Chamber Orchestra. She enjoys playing chamber music and teaching.

Katherine Tobey, LMTA’s Outstanding Teacher for 2010, was honored as an MTNA Foundation Fellow in 2011. She is an independent teacher in Baton Rouge and serves BRMTA as Membership/Mentoring Chair and Allen-Flem-ing Scholarship Auditions Chair. She is LMTA’s Immediate Past President and Webmaster and serves on the MTNA Nominating Committee. Past positions include South Central Division’s Composition Chair and BRMTA President.

Sue Steck-Turner, MTNA’s 2011 Teacher of the Year, is an independent piano teacher in Lafayette who is certified as a Master Teacher by MTNA and LMTA. She currently serves as LMTA’s VP/Certification and as South Central Divi-sion’s Certification Commissioner. Honored as the LMTA Outstanding Teacher for 1999 and as an MTNA Foundation Fellow in 2008, Ms. Steck-Turner has also served LMTA as President, President-Elect, and SOS/SHS Fund Chairman.

Yung-chiao Wei, Associate Professor of Bass at LSU, was the first female bass-ist to perform a solo recital in Carnegie Hall. Wei has performed at major con-cert halls around the world and given master classes and recitals throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. Her first CD was recorded with bassist Chao-i Chou and was released on Centaur Records in 2008. Wei is a recipient of numer-ous honors, including the LSU Tiger Athletic Foundation Teaching Award.

Carol White is a graduate of LSU with a B.S. in General Studies and a B.M. in Piano Performance/Piano Pedagogy. She is a member of Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association and maintains a private studio in Ethel, Louisiana. She currently holds the positions of Independent Music Teachers Forum chairman for LMTA and Summer Music Scholarship chairman for BRMTA.

Mourns the passing of our friend and colleague,

Danielle Gurt1962-2011

A devoted and active member of Baton Rouge Music Teachers Association, Danielle will always be remembered for her optimism and cheerful demeanor. She served our group in many capacities and chaired our Halloween Musicale for many years. Danielle was also a valued member of the Louisiana Federation of Music Clubs and a Past-President of the Philharmonic Club. A beloved teacher, an active adjudicator, and a staunch supporter of BRMTA, she will be sorely missed.
