During the 2014-15 school year, South Shore Arts and a handful of nonprofit collaborators premiered UNIVERSO, a dynamic new arts program that served seven East Chicago schools with four arts disciplines and an orchestra program. Such an undertaking required the talents of a strong team. In addition to South Shore Arts, the UNIVERSO collaboration consisted of East Chicago Arts Initiative, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, South Shore Dance Alliance, South Shore Chamber Orchestra and Communities-in-Schools. Funding was provided by the Foundations of East Chicago along with sponsors of the partnering organizations.

This free after-school arts enrichment program was open to all 3rd through 8th grade students at all ability levels. Embodying the fundamentals of El Sistema and a STEAM (Science/Technology/Engineering/Art/Math) curriculum, UNIVERSO provided arts enrichment four times a week for over half the school year. A pilot orchestra program at Washington Elementary School provided a hands-on music experience beginning with students choosing their preferred instruments to performing before an audience.

Students were offered an exciting introduction to the program by attending the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra’s Education Concert, featuring Gustav Holst’s The Planets and combining a classical concert experience with a visual extravaganza that included choreographed space images and live narration by Dr. José Francisco Salgado from Chicago’s Adler Planetarium.

The theme of The Planets was carried throughout the program through space-inspired art projects, whimsical choreographed dances, and student-created musical and spoken word poetry composition. Dedicated UNIVERSO staff and instructors led the students through a whole arts experience.

What does a week in UNIVERSO look like through the eyes of a student? Genesis, a 4th grader from Lincoln Elementary School had a lot to say: “It is awesome! On Fridays, I can’t wait until Monday to go back to UNIVERSO. I have art on Monday, on Tuesday I dance, on Wednesday I write poetry and on Thursday I make music and play instruments.

“My brother only likes dance, so he goes to that and my best friend likes music and art, so we get to hang out after school and make projects and music together. I like the

teachers too. I ride the bus home, which is good because my grandma doesn’t like me walking home when it is dark out. I love UNIVERSO!”.

As budget cuts consistently threaten the arts in area schools, the South Shore Arts Education Department continues to develop programs like UNIVERSO to ensure that the arts remain accessible.

An Out-of-This World Arts Experience!

Page 5: Convergence Fall 2015

Every year at the Beaux Arts Ball, we honor special patrons who have helped make the arts available to the people of our region. This year, South Shore Arts acknowledged over 15 years of funding from the Foundations of East Chicago. While this consistency of support is certainly laudable in itself, it was the funding for UNIVERSO that was truly remarkable.

Over 500 students participated in the program and another 3,700 students were served through performances and other indirect activities. All of the UNIVERSO programming was provided at no cost to the students thanks to a grant of $161,000 from the Foundations of East Chicago.

At right, George Weems, Interim Executive Director, and Nadyne Kokot, President, the Foundations of East Chicago, accept the award.

New South Shore Poster Celebrates the Hawks!South Shore Poster artist Mitch Markovitz has worked closely with the Blackhawks and sponsors Sue and Andy Arnold to capture the excitement that surrounds this championship team and their fans with “LET’S GO HAWKS!”

The poster had a special Blackhawks Convention premiere in July, showcasing Duncan Keith, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, who have each won three Stanley Cups and the Conn Smythe trophy as MVP of the playoffs.

Mitch has created a celebration on ice in developing and executing this poster. The Chicago Blackhawks organization is thrilled to be a part of the poster series and pay tribute to all of their fans along the South Shore. Precision Control Systems, sponsor of the Blackhawks poster, has been a corporate sponsor of the team for several years.

Andy Arnold, Precision’s owner and president, is a long-time board member of South Shore Arts and a strong supporter of the arts in Northwest Indiana.

Sue & Andy Arnold with “LET’S GO HAWKS!”

“LET’S GO HAWKS!” posters can be purchased at the South Shore Arts Gift Shop located in the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, 1040 Ridge Road, Munster. Fans can also view the entire collection and purchase South Shore Posters online at www.southshoreartsonline.org.

Beaux Arts Ball Sponsors

The 22nd Annual Beaux Arts Ball—Let it Gogh!—was held on Friday, June 5, 2015, at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. The stars were aligned perfectly for our “Starry Night,” with net proceeds of $190,000 making it a resounding success! Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to our generous and engaged attendees, board members, committee, community and staff. Special recognition and thanks to our dedicated Beaux Arts Ball Co-Chairs Sandi Kozlowski, Julie Mintz, and Cherie Rippey.

The Beaux Arts Ball is South Shore Arts’ primary fundraiser with proceeds benefitting our everykid art education programs for children, youth and families. The Ball’s success allows us to grow and sustain these programs despite unexpected disruptions in funding. This year, the everykid program celebrated its 20th anniversary serving nearly 30,000 children and youth in Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago!

Diego Gonzalez, a successful artist who was a student in one of our very first after-school scholarship classes held in 1995, spoke from the heart about how much the scholarship and class experience meant to him, giving him confidence and inspiration to follow a lifelong path in the arts. Better yet, Diego is becoming more involved in South Shore Arts in order to help provide opportunities for other kids.

Our Let It Gogh! theme was once again a play on words, and we had to be a little irreverent, of course, with a plate of delicious chocolates from Gayety’s in the shape of ears on each table. Get it?

Cocktails in the gallery featured a special crowdsourced painting project inspired by Van Gogh, and Judith Mayer created a Van Gogh-esque invitation. Jackie Wickland and crew adorned the tables with cobalt blue vases, sunflowers and irises. Striking blue violet spotlights uplit the room. Elliott From of ArtbeatLive returned this year to replicate

Major sponsors of the 22nd Annual Beaux Arts Ball were Diamond Sponsors ArcelorMittal and BP. The Morrow Family Foundation is a lead underwriter of the everykid program. Event sponsors were BMO Harris Bank, Community Healthcare System, Hammond Machine Works, Lexus of Merrillville and NIPSCO. Judith Mayer, owner of Keyword Design, provided the invitation and program design, and Tom Largus of Largus Graphix Solutions donated the invitations. James & Sons donated a beautiful diamond necklace for our raffle and Tom O’Donnell was our auctioneer extraordinaire!

Mark you calendars for next year. The 23rd Annual Beaux Arts Ball is scheduled for June 1, 2016.

Arts Trust license plates are available at any branch office of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles and can also be ordered online at www.in.gov/bmv/2793.htm. Every purchased or renewed license plate generates $25 for the Indiana Cultural Trust Fund.

Organizations that choose to focus on building an endowment are making a decision to think long-term about their ability to provide services. Endowments allow an organization to be less dependent on unpredictable sources of funding by providing a continuous steady source of income, often the difference between continuing operations and closing the doors if annual donations decline.

The Nonprofit Sustainability Program of Legacy Foundation is designed to guide and support local nonprofit organizations as they build strong endowment and planned giving programs that will ultimately provide stable, long-term support for their critical work in the community.

The Legacy Foundation has announced that South Shore Arts is one of six organizations that will focus on organizational sustainability through endowment building. These organizations are working with a consultant for nine months to begin or continue the process of building strong endowment and planned giving programs.

Far-sighted leaders established South Shore Arts’ primary endowment in the early 1990s, beginning with funds left over from the capital campaign that brought us into the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in 1989. Over the past 25 years, numerous donor-advised funds have been established to supplement the primary endowment

and support specific programs in perpetuity. Many of these funds are held by the Legacy Foundation, Porter County Community Foundation and Crown Point Community Foundation. Other funds are held independently, but all are permanent endowments.
