Frequently Asked Questions about Convey: Insight

What is Convey: Insight?

Dukane has a suite of products called Convey. Convey Classroom can be used to control AV resources.

Convey: Insight is a student/audience response system.

The two are not mutually needed, but CAN be used together, or separately.

On What Systems Will Convey: Insight operate?

The installed components of a Convey: Insight teacher station requires the following:

Windows XP (SP3) Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 . NET 4.0 (installed if required during installation)

To run Convey: Insight on a Mac you have to either use Boot camp or a virtualization software (such as Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion) or run a windows OS in one of those two ways. Convey works flawlessly in those environments as well.

Page 2: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

The web-based components of Convey: Insight for responses using Tablets, Smart Phones, Netbooks, PCs or Macs require:

Any of these current browsers: Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and higher.

Ipad, Ipad mini, and IPhones, Android Tablets and phones, Windows Phones and tablets, Kindle Fire, Nook are all supported for use for response.

WI-FI or an Internet Connection is of course needed to support those devices

Phone-sized devices are not recommended for instructor use due to the user-interface needing more screen space to access the various elements.

Phone-sized devices are great for student/participant use.

How do I setup my class Rosters? (Without Convey: Enterprise?

Convey: Insight uses a CSV import engine. You need to export your class rosters to a CSV file. (Typically created in Excel then saved as a .csv file)  A .csv file is a “Comma separated Values file format. Most roster and student management program will export .csv files into a format that can be used in Excel . Excel can also be used to convert lists in text format (from a Word file, for example, into a .csv file)

This means in most cases where a roster exists, you will not have to type in the names.

How Can I use my existing PowerPoint slides with Convey:Insight?

It’s so easy!

You have two options:

For zero prep time, choose Teacher-Paced questions and simply launch the Question Player toolbar (don't choose a playlist). Then Start your PowerPoint Slide Show. When a slide comes up that has a question on it, use the Convey Question Player to select the correct question type and click start polling. Before you start another question be sure to key in the correct answer and give your question a short title name in the Answer Stack.

Beginner Mode: Only uses the Anonymous Roster, Only allows use of Impromptu questions in the Question Player, Only allows Teacher-paced Question to be asked.

Advanced: All functions of the software are available: use rosters, playlists, teacher or student paced sessions; individual student responses can be recorded and tracked.

Intermediate: identical to Advanced except 4 icons are hidden on the main Quicklauncher window: Timer, Student Call On, Control and Editor buttons are hidden.

You can access them by switching to advanced mode in the Options button and choosing your desired setting in the drop down menu.

Page 16: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

Does each student always have to use the same numbered responder?

This question applies to students using the dedicated, yellow Convey response pad:

NO. Each student can use any response pad. They log in with their Student ID number during the login process.

Benefit: This daily management of the pads is easy because pads are not “hard wired” to a particular number. It matters not which student gets a pad at any time.

Page 17: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

Benefit: It also makes it simple to use a number of pads in subsets, as long as there is a receiver for each teacher workstation. For example two 32 pad sets could be used separately.

For a larger group, the two 32 pad Classpack could be used as a single 64 pad set

How do I know the Room ID of my Base Station (Response pad receiver)?

Base Station (Receiver) and Convey Response Pad

There are a variety of places that Convey shows your Room ID. Simply click the Options button in the Quick launcher window. The bottom of that menu will show the Room ID of your Base Station. This is the number that must be keyed in first during login to associate the responder to the current room.’

Note: A base station (receiver) is only needed when the Yellow covey response pads are used,

A base station (receiver) is not needed when using a browser capable tablet, tablet, or PC for Use as student/Audience response. Those devices will connect to the Convey cloud-based software via WIFI or an Internet connection (for PCs)

Page 18: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

How do I start a polling session?

Make sure your base station is connected to a USB port. Launch the Convey: Insight application.

1. Click the Bell (Session Manager) icon on the Quicklauncher window.2.3. Choose a teacher, roster (anonymous is OK) and Question Playlist Style.

(Choose Teacher/Leader paced to poll impromptu questions)4. Click Start Session.

A. If you have chosen a Question Playlist, the Question Playlist Manager window will open and you can choose which questions to give by simply clicking on them in the center of the window. When you are ready click the "Question Player: Start Player with "x" Questions" button below the question list. Then click the start Polling button on the Question Player to begin polling.

B. If you have not chosen a question playlist, the Question Player will open immediately after you click the Start Session button. Choose your question type from the pop-up menu in the question type stack and then click the Start Polling button (Play sign) to launch the question.

Page 20: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

How do I create an Attendance Report?

Once your students have all logged in with their responders, simply go to Quicklauncher->Report Icon (lower right)->Attendance Report (in the drop down menu) The Attendance Report will automatically appear and be completed. You can print it or export to CSV or Excel for use in external reporting applications.

Note: A .CSV file is a Comma-Separated Values file. .CSV files are useful because those files can be imported directly into software like Excel, Access, and Filemaker.

Page 21: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

What is the greyed out icon of a Projector for on the Quicklauncher bar?

That is for accessing a Convey Control interface window. Convey Control is not currently active in your installation.

Page 22: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)

How do I call on a student who has chosen a particular answer?

(In other words, how would you choose a specific student who has answered "A" in a multiple-choice question)

Whether on the Question Player or in the Question Viewer, simply click the Results Icon (small bar graph) and then click the letter A. You will get a drop down with an option to Call ON… students. Click on Call On and a student who answered "A" will automatically be chosen and his or her name displayed so you can call on them.

How do I access the database of prepared content for Convey:Insight?

It is available two ways:1. Go to http://content.conveyclassrooms.com

Search for playlists that meet your criteria and download them by checking the box on the left and clicking Download Question Playlist(s) button on the left side of the window.

You will get a pop-up dialog box that asks you to Open or Save the playlist(s). Choose Open and Convey will automatically download the playlist and populate it into the Question Playlist Manager window. From there, simply choose the questions you wish to load into the Question Player, start the Question Player and start polling!

Page 23: Convey:Insight FAQ( Freqeuntly asked Questions)
