Conwy castle was the third ofEdward I's great castles. Built in1283 on a rocky site at the mouthof the River Conwy and against abackground of wooded hills, it isan impressive fortress, withmassive battlemented walls andeight commanding drum towers. It is also one of the best preservedof all Britain’s medieval castles.
At Conwy Visitor’s Centre in RosehillStreet, a 20 minute film “In search ofConwy” takes you through the town’s800 year history. An exhibition alsorecreates scenes from the past.
Conwy is a fascinating walled town ofquaint narrow streets. Among the fewancient houses that still survive areAberconwy, owned by the NationalTrust, a 14th century house used forexhibitions showing the history of thetown, and Plas Mawr, one of the finestremaining examples of an Elizabethancountry house. On a smaller scale thetown boasts Britain’s smallest house, aVictorian fisherman’s cottage.Measuring 6' in width and standing 10'high; its two rooms are linked by avertical staircase.
The river Conwy is spanned by threebridges, the most impressive beingTelford’s suspension bridge built in1826. This was superseded by theroad bridge of 1958 and RobertStephenson’s splendid railway bridgefrom 1846. The river also offers someinteresting activities. The water busQueen Victoria sails 7 days a week fromEaster to late October (see notices onthe quay or ring 01492 592284 forfurther details). River trips offerspectacular views of the Conwy Valley, whilst from the estuary, Puffin Island,Anglesey and the Great Orme can beseen.
The area also has several yacht clubswhich organise regattas and offshoreraces; these include the Conwy YachtClub, Victoria Buildings, Station Road,Deganwy, Tel: 01492 583 690; The RoyalAnglesey Yacht Club, Beaumaris,Anglesey, Tel: 01248 810295; The North Wales Cruising Association,Lower High Street, Aberconwy, Tel:01492 593481; and the Irish Sea OffshoreRacing Association (I.S.O.R.A.) 119Chelwood Avenue, Liverpool L16 2LL.
Further afield, the seaside resorts ofthe North Wales coast such asPrestatyn, Rhyl, Colwyn Bay,Llandudno and Bangor offer extraattractions whilst inland, theSnowdonia National Park is withineasy reach. The area is renowned forwalking and mountaineering, andseveral of the old slate quarries arenow tourist attractions.
Llandudno is situated on theCreuddyn Peninsula, in ConwyNorth Wales. It's location close tothe Snowdonia Tram ride up theGreat Orme National Park makesit ideal for touring Snowdoniaand North Wales.
Known as the Queen of the Welshresorts Llandudno is a charmingVictorian seaside resort between thetwo limestone headlands of the GreatOrme and the Little Orme.
Take a ride on the unique VictorianTramway to the top of the GreatOrme and visit the Great OrmeCountry Park, play a round of Golf, ortake an invigorating stroll along theVictorian Pier.

Navigation requirescare, but follow the buoys throughthe channel and you'll have theoption of picking up a mooring atBeaumaris, Bangor or Menai Bridge.Pass under Telford's suspensionbridge and through the Swellies ataround slack water, and you cancontinue through the Straits. Tostarboard, you will find the superbbuilding of Plas Newydd, home of theMarquis of Anglesey. Now run by theNational Trust, this is an attractiveand interesting spot, well worth avisit. Further on you will find PortDinorwic, another popular port of call.Secure alongside in the lock, the outerharbour or on a swinging mooring.Continuing southward, brings you toCaernarfon, with its castle standingproudly on the shore, overlooking theglistening sands of Abermenai whichextend for miles. At the south westentrance to the Straits is CaernarfonBar, where you'll find NewboroughWarren and one of the favouriteanchorages on Anglesey - Pilot's Coveat Llanddwyn Island. Paint a pretty picture – take carewith anti-fouling. Ensure that anti-fouling scrapings are swept up anddisposed of. Try not to allow them toenter the water. Where possible useproducts that are biodegradable, phosphate and chlorine free.
Quay Marinas Ltd are keen toencourage and promoteenvironmental awareness amongstcustomers of it’s marinas. Pleaseconsider the needs of theenvironment for the good of all.Be aware of wildlife – shoreline habitats support a hugevariety of species that can bevulnerable to disturbance. Reduceyour speed and check your wash insensitive areas.
Don’t be a noisy neighbour –roaring engines, flapping halyards, loud music can disturb other users ofthe marina and nearby residents. Dowhat you can to reduce noisepollution to a minimum.
Overboard is out – litter spoils the appearance of themarina and harms the environment.Bag your rubbish and dispose of it inthe marina bins. It is an offenceunder the Merchant Shipping(Prevention of Pollution by Garbage)Regulations 1988 to dump rubbishin a river or at sea.
Don’t flush – untreated sewage from vessels is unsightly and a healthhazard to other water users. Don’tpollute the marina environment usethe shore facilities wheneverpossible.
Maintain your motor – by regularly servicing yourmechanical equipment your vesselsefficiency will be optimised. This willsave engine emissions, engine noiseand reduce your fuel bills.
Don’t pollute the water – drips and spillage’s have a seriouscumulative effect on the marineenvironment. Portable fuel tanks andspare fuel containers should be filledaway from the waters edge. Don’toverfill tanks. Provide drip trays andabsorbent material. Dispose of usedengine oil within the waste oil tanksin the marina.

One of the best kept secrets in Conwy is the factthat boats from Conway Yacht Club race a coursearound Conwy Bay just about every weekend fromMay to October. We actually start in February onthe weekends when there is a suitable tide andenough light.
We welcome anyone with a sailing vessel, no matter whatexperience you have, to come and join us and give yachtracing a go. It may look fierce and competitive on acatamaran in San Francisco Bay, but we take a gentler lowkey approach to things.
One of our objectives for CYC is to get more cruising boatsout on the water, to make our racing even more fun andcompetitive. We have introduced our own handicapping system which takes into account a skipper’scapabilities as well as the capabilities of his/her boat.Handicaps are reviewed regularly during the season so thateveryone gets a chance to win, and there is a real incentiveto take part and improve. This year we hope to start the season early during February with someinformal Saturday races, starting out in the bay rather thanin the river. We hope Saturday s will make it easier for thoseof you who are here purely for the weekend.
If you are even thinking about taking part then please dropus a mail. We will make it an easy process and introduction for you. Our sailing program for 2014 will beposted on our website. Please take a look at it.www.conwayyachtclub.com.
If there is an event you would like to join in then get intouch. If you are in Conwy Marina then go and see CrisMiles on “Rebel” berth D43. Cris is an active member ofCYC and he will be happy to talk to you at length about ourprogramme.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at seaRoyal National Lifeboat Institution, a charity registered in England and Wales (209603) and Scotland (SC037736). Registered charity number 20003326 in the Republic of Ireland
Source: RNLI audience profiling research (2015). The RNLI commissioned independent research into the attitudes to safety and risk of UK yacht sailors. A total of 4,996 sailors responded to a survey run by the study team. When asked about their experience of safety incidents, 12% said that they had gone overboard while sailing a yacht.
