Perseverando ● Through Perseverance Perseverando ● Through Perseverance Perseverando ● Through Perseverance Dear Parents, Students and Friends, Our new school hall is on its way! The start of term was filled with much excitement, not only because of our fantastic GCSE and A level results (which we continue to celebrate – see page 3 for our Celebration of Achievement evening), but also because we received the fantastic news that planning permission had been granted for our new school hall. Members of Stockton Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to back the plans which will see a fantastic school hall and a multi- purpose studio being built later this year. The new hall will see a huge improvement to the facilities on offer to both the school and local community. The hall will host assemblies, performances, activities and examinations, and will free up the gym and sports hall (sometimes disrupted during the summer exam season) for a range of sporting activities. The state of the art hall will sit next to the Astroturf and include 250 place bleacher seating, which will allow the hall to transform into a multi-purpose space. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council have awarded our school £800,000 to build the new hall, but in order to build the multi- purpose studio and a suite of FA specification changing rooms in order to maximise the potential of the new building, we now need to fundraise the final £50,000 as a school and local community. In the coming months there will be a number of high profile fundraising events and opportunities for you to get involved in if you would like to help us achieve our dream of a school hall with full facilities. If you know of anyone (friend, family member or local business) who could help, please email [email protected]. We aim to get the fundraising well and truly underway at the start of next half term – more information will follow in due course. Many thanks in advance for your support in helping to achieve our goal of building a hall and facilities that will benefit our students and the local community for many years to come. Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

Our new school hall is on its way!

The start of term was filled with much excitement, not only because of our fantastic GCSE and A level results (which we continue to celebrate – see page 3 for our Celebration of Achievement evening), but also because we received the fantastic news that planning permission had been granted for our new school hall. Members of Stockton Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to back the plans which will see a fantastic school hall and a multi-purpose studio being built later this year.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council have awarded our school £800,000 to build the new hall, but in order to build the multi-purpose studio and a suite of FA specification changing rooms in order to maximise the potential of the new building, we now need to fundraise the final £50,000 as a school and local community.

Cerys O’Boyle

Student at Conyers 2008-2015

Head Girl We are all deeply saddened by the death of our wonderful former Head Girl Cerys O’Boyle. Cerys embodied all of our core values as a determined and hardworking student who achieved outstanding examination results. She seized opportunities representing the school in sport and developing her skills as a talented footballer and she made an outstanding contribution to our school serving as Head Girl in her final year. As a community we are devastated by her loss and send our love and condolences to Mr and Mrs O’Boyle and her family.

Conyers Challenge We have had our first ever bunch of Year 5s in for the Maths 'Conyers Challenge' - and what a smart bunch they are!

In just a few weeks they have learned the secret of some cool Mathematics number tricks, and how we can use algebra to explain how Maths really works.

We've also explored probability and found the reason behind some surprising results.

Some of the Year 5s have apparently being using their new-found skills to make extra pocket money by challenging parents/brothers/sisters to the Maths challenges - and always winning!

Congratulations to Billy Melling from Yarm Primary School, who won the prize for guessing the smallest positive whole number that nobody else said at our Year 6 Open Evening in September.

The winning number was 4!

Conyers Choir Perform With ABBA Tribute Show

Our school choir performed with the ABBA tribute show Thank You For the Music at the Forum Theatre, Billingham on 11 October. They represented the school fantastically and did an amazing job singing in front of 500 ABBA fans!

BUGSY MALONE

We are delighted to announce that tickets for this years school production, ‘Bugsy Malone’ are now on sale.

Tickets are £10 and available from school. ‘Bugsy Malone’ takes place on November 15 and 16 at The Forum Theatre, Billingham.

Rehearsals are now well underway and we are all really excited for the show. All proceeds from the ticket sales go towards staging the production.

If any parents or businesses would like to sponsor us and in return we can place an advert / thank you in the program please contact Mrs Pattison.

Parent's Contact Details

Please could parents ensure that the school has their current telephone landlines and mobile numbers and email addresses when they change them as during the bad weather earlier this year a number of the messages sent to parents could not be delivered as the school did not have their current details. Changes to telephone numbers, email addresses and addresses can be emailed to [email protected]

Thank you for your help with this matter.

Assisted Purchase

We recommend that any student who has passed their grade 3 invests in their own intermediate instrument. The best way to do this is through our assisted purchase scheme where the cost of the instrument can be spread to the end of the academic year and the instrument can be bought without having to pay VAT.

For more information please email [email protected]

Individual Lessons

One to one lessons are available for all students at a cost of £15 per lesson, and are strongly recommended for any student who is working towards grade 5 or higher. The more advanced techniques and amount of material needed to be covered for the higher grades means a more bespoke, personalised focus to the lessons is the best approach.

For more information please email [email protected]

Friends of Conyers Christmas Market

We are running our annual Christmas Market on Friday 23 November and would be extremely appreciative of any raffle prizes. These can be left at school reception. This year we are raising funds for the new school hall, changing rooms and studio, an exciting opportunity to enhance the school for both students and the wider community who can use these facilities on evening and weekends. The Market is always well attended, featuring over 20 traders with Christmas gifts, crafts and a range of foody treats. Chance to get your Christmas shopping off to a good start!

Friends of Conyers is recruiting new members

Friends of Conyers is the Parent Teacher Association for Conyers. It works to raise funds to pay for the nice additional items for various aspects of the school such as outdoor seating for students, supporting the school show and banners for the school band. It meets around 4 times a year after school for a fairly informal get together to discuss ideas and plan fund raising events. We would really welcome new members – parents, grandparents, staff and ideas.

Focus Day 1 Year 7 students enjoyed a busy day at Beamish for their focus day. They were set a number of Murder Mystery challenges, with puzzles to solve and questions to answer. They visited the sweet shop which is always a highlight of the day for students.

Year 8-11 students took part in a Health and Resilience day on Friday 12 October.

The Colour Run, introduced last year for the first time, took place again and was a huge success. Students also took part in Drama workshops, bootcamp and alcohol and risk taking behaviour workshops. Our Student Ambassadors delivered an excellent talk to Year 10 students about Be Strong Online, giving valuable tips and advice on how to protect themselves while online.

Year 11 students took part in a first aid session, revision workshops and a talk from Olympic swimmer, Chris Cook, on the value of resilience.

Year 12 students visited Leeds University and Year 13 students worked on their UCAS applications.

School’s Policy on Medicines in School and First Aid in School Reminder

Medicines in school Non Prescribed Medicines: Students may not carry ‘over the counter’ non prescribed medicines with them in school. Staff are not permitted to give or allow students to take non prescribed medication e.g. paracetamol.

Prescribed Medicines: These should only be brought into school when essential; that is where it would be detrimental to a child’s health if the medicine were not administered during the school day. The Teaching Assistant with responsibility for Prescribed Medication will meet with the parent and draw up a Care Plan agreeing the circumstances when this medication can be given to the student.

School can only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse’s prescriber or pharmacist prescriber.

Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration and dosage. A written letter of consent by the parent should be sent into school with the medication and a Care Plan is written.

School cannot accept medicines that have been taken out of the container as originally dispensed nor make changes to dosages on parental instructions.

It is helpful, where clinically appropriate, if medicines are prescribed in dose frequencies which enable it to be taken outside school hours. Parents are requested to ask the prescriber about this. It is to be noted that some medicines that need to be taken three times per day could be taken in the morning, after school and at bedtime.

The only prescribed medications that can be carried by students themselves are epipens, insulin and inhalers. A spare, complete with name of student, should be kept in the Medical Room for emergency use.

All other medications must be stored, administered, and recorded in the Medical Room.

First Aid in school 1. Support for Children with Medical Needs

Parents/carers have the prime responsibility for their child’s health and should provide school with information about any medical conditions. Parents, and the student if appropriate, should obtain details from their General Practitioner [GP] or paediatrician, if needed. Parents should provide the school with full information about their child’s medical needs, including details on any required medications.

2. Provision The school Medical Room is organised to provide treatment for all students and staff for injuries that occur during the school day 8.55 a.m. to 3.40 p.m. Although treatment will be provided by trained staff during school hours for incidents that arise at school, it is expected that for routine medical matters the student’s home GP will be consulted by the parents/carers. A programme of preventative medical screening and immunisations for students is organised on a regular basis, subject to parental consent.

3. Practice All accidents to students on the school site are recorded in the school’s Accident Book. When accidents occur in school, a qualified First Aider may give first aid if appropriate.

Nut allergy A number of our students suffer from nut allergies therefore it is requested that students do not have products containing nuts on the school buses or bring them into school.

Car Parking and Access to the School – Enforcement Action The Green Lane entrance to the school is extremely busy and subject to congestion around 08:30 – 09:00 and 15:30 -16:00. We are seeking the cooperation of parents to keep our students safe coming in and out of school.

Stockton Council have put in new parking restrictions around the entrance to Conyers School, following a series of complaints from parents and local residents about inconsiderate or dangerous parking. This is in addition to the double yellow lines inside the bus bay. Stockton Council parking enforcement team will carry out spot checks and will issue fines to cars illegally parked. The school is enforcing restrictions on access during these hours.

Can we remind all parents / carers:

the bus bay is closed to all cars between 08:30 – 09:00 and 15:20 -16:00, to allow the buses taking students to and from the school safe access

parking on the double yellow lines is strictly prohibited

no vehicle is allowed onto the school site for collecting or dropping off students, without prior agreement (restricted to those students with limited mobility)

the disabled parking bays at the school are strictly reserved for the use of families with disabled students or with injuries, again with prior agreement

parking in the vicinity of the school should be done with due consideration for other users of the pavements, road and local residents.

The bus bays are empty after 16:00 and Green Lane considerably quieter. Parents / Carers may wish to consider arranging to collect their children from this time and so avoid the traffic and parking problems.

These restrictions on parking and access are there to protect the students, parents, visitors and staff. Can we please count on your cooperation with this to help ensure the safety of all concerned.

Thank you for your help with this matter.

John McCann Director of Finance and Operations

Holidays in Term Time

In line with the Local Authority policy for Penalty Notices (Code of Conduct and Procedure for Attendance and Exclusions) which was updated in June 2017, holidays in term time will be unauthorised unless there are exceptional circumstances to support the request.

Therefore a penalty notice will be issued if a child has 10 sessions (5 school days) or more of absence in 6 school weeks which are classified as unauthorised.

A warning letter will be issued in regards to an unauthorised holiday in term time if the request for leave is deemed not to meet exceptional circumstances.

Any parent who feels that there are exceptional circumstances regarding their holiday request should put this in writing accompanied by any supporting documentation to their child’s Pastoral Manager.

Notifiable Illnesses

If your child is diagnosed with chickenpox, shingles or measles please could you inform the school as soon as possible.

PE Department

Keep up to date with all of the team’s fixtures and results via Twitter @ConyersPE.

Football Year 7 footballers have had a strong start to the season, they got off to a tough start with defeat against a very strong Richmond team in the National Cup. Since then they have gone from strength to strength with some impressive displays leading to victories over Ingleby Manor, Our Lady and St Bede's and All Saints.

Year 8's were extremely lucky in the National Cup against Nunthorpe, they came back from 4-0 down to be leading 5-4, unfortunately Nunthorpe equalised in the final minute of extra time and went on to win on penalties. In other competitions the boys have put in some impressive displays beating Manor 3-0 in the County Cup and Grangefield 8-1 in the league.

Year 10 have made a superb start to the season winning an excellent match against Richmond School in the ESFA Cup. The game was a tight and physical contest well into the second half. Ross Jenney broke the deadlock with a well-placed header and eventually the fantastic team work of the Conyers side saw them win 3-0.

Sixth Form started off their league campaign with a fixture away to Kings Academy. This was the first time the team had played together. The first half was very equal with both teams having chances but neither were clinical. Then the second half was very similar until the last 10 minutes, with Conyers pushing for a goal Kings broke and scored the opener and quickly doubled their lead straight after. Super sub Mickey Khan pulled one back in the last 5 minutes. As the boys pushed on for the equaliser, it left us open at the back and Kings scored again as the final whistle blew 3-1. Next up is Macmillan at home.

Under 13 started off their campaign with a national cup game against Macmillan. The girls played extremely well narrowly getting beat 3-2. Rosie Dunkerton with both goals coming from the edge of the box.

Under 14 girls started off their matches with a national cup game against Nunthorpe. It was most of the girls first time playing 11 aside against a strong established team. The game ended 6-1 with Kacie Smith scoring the only goal.

Rugby Year 7 rugby have made an excellent start to the season, we have had great numbers of students at training and this has allowed us to build what has started as a strong team. We hosted Red House School in what was for many of our team their first ever rugby match, not that you would know as we performed extremely well winning by a number of tries.

We then travelled to Macmillan Academy where we played against schools from all over the county, we won five and drew one of our games meaning that so far the team have not been beaten. We have a great mixture of more experienced club players playing alongside players who are new to the sport which means hopefully we will continue to improve.

The Year 8 rugby team have been working hard to develop their skills. They have played against Red House School and in the local schools festival at Allen's West. Cole Simpson has been a stand out player with Al-Ameen Ayodele proving a strong and powerful runner. Harry Wilson, Lewis James and Preston Lewis have been constantly involved.

Year 9 kicked off their season with a tough encounter vs Red House who are very well organised and have a high percentage of players playing club rugby. We were narrowly beaten in a high scoring match in which both sides came out with a lot of positives.

The 1st round of the county cup meant we welcomed OLSB to Conyers were we were able to put some hard training sessions into practice. We came out 57-37 winners in what was an outstanding display of attacking rugby. Josh Preece snatched what proved to be the pivotal try as the time whistle approached before Finn Robinson ensured the result with a trade mark break on the blindside from an attacking scrum.

Highly Able Club The PE department have run a Year 6 Highly Able Club throughout the term for the local primaries. These have been great fun with around 20 children actively engaged in developing their key skills of agility, balance and coordination through a variety of games. These developmental sessions have been about enjoyment, encouraging the pupils to go back to their schools and share their learning with peers.
