Saddened over rubbish scattered shoreline

By Nikki PapatsoumasContinued from page 1.

Owhiro Bay beach is part of the Taputeranga Marine Reserve, which protects all marine life from Houghton Bay around to the Old Owhiro Quarry.

“If we don’t take the time to put our rubbish in the bin, I wonder what our world will look like in 50 years,” she says.

“People need to try and move away from the mindset that it’s not my rubbish so it’s not my problem, and think more about preserving these areas for future generations.”

Taputeranga Marine Re-serve Trustee Julian Hodge says he also noticed the large amount of rubbish piling

up along the Owhiro Bay coastline last week.

“I don’t know if it is a result of people dumping. What happens is a lot of waste comes onto the shore line, and when we have a southerly it gets blown and transported onto the beach.”

He says the tides move rub-bish up and down the coast, and all it takes for it to end up on the beach is a south-erly wind, much like the one Wellington experienced last Monday.

“It is a huge concern, this is a Marine Reserve and while we have measures in place, one of the biggest threats is the threat of rubbish and debris coming from the land.”

Mr Hodge, who is also the

programme manager for the Island Bay Marine Education Centre says that he likes to use this as an opportunity to teach school children about the effects of rubbish dump-ing.

“We get the children to come out with us and collect the rubbish that is safe and easily visible. Then ask them to think about where it came from.

“It is an opportunity to show a different generation of people the effect rubbish has on our coast.”

He says they are also lucky enough to have residents within the community vol-unteer their time on Saturday and Sunday Mornings to clean the beach up.

Training helps save lives

like Matt Allison, the char-ity's MayDay fundraising appeal means he can get vital training to help boaties in need.

The MayDay Appeal raises money for Coast-guard's volunteer training programme, which focuses on the theme 'Train One, Save Many'.

Matt, from Evans Bay, started volunteering at Coastguard in January.

“I didn't plan on it,” he says.

When windsurfi ng round Evans Bay earlier this year, Matt's sail broke and a nearby launch towed him to shore.

“I thought, that was a re-ally nice deed, I'll get him some beer.”

When Matt went looking

for the boatie at Evans Bay Marina, he popped into the Coastguard for assistance.

“I talked to the Coast-guard for 45 minutes to an hour and left signed up as a member.”

Since then Matt has been part of fi ve rescues, includ-ing one at Seaview where three men with a rounda-bout boat were stuck on rocks in a southerly wind.

“They were qute shaken.”He says being part of the

rescue was a “really good feeling.”

“This is what it's all about.”Matt, who had never

volunteered before joining Coastguard, says it gives him more appreciation for people who give up their time.

“It does open your eyes a bit more.”

He says all the Coastguard

volunteers come from dif-ferent backgrounds and levels of experience, so it is vital they are trained correctly.

“Some people have experi-ence on water, but others are totally new.”

Coastguard rescued 6634 people nationwide between July 1 2011 to June 30 2012.

Between July 2012 and March 2013 Coastguard has been been called for help 1908 times – more than fi ve times per day.

As part of the Appeal, Coastguard is launching Hour For Coastguard, which encourages Kiwis to donate an hour of their pay to train Coastguards volunteers.

Go to w w w.hour for-coastguard.co.nz , or www.coastguard.co.nz to make a donation.

By Lydia AndersonLabour leader David Shearer put the emphasis on

“hard-working New Zealanders” when he delivered his pre-Budget speech at a packed-out Vogelmorn Community Hall last week

About 100 people from the Rongotai electorate turned out to hear Mr Shearer outline Labour's plans regarding NZ Power, KiwiBuild, lifting the minimum wage and changes to Kiwisaver.

He said National's coming Budget will be a “Budget for the board room, not the smoko room,” receiving murmurs of approval from the crowd when he insisted Kiwis should be rewarded for talent and hard work - “not because you're somebody's mate”.

“That's the guts of the difference between John Key and me,” he said.

When asked how Labour's policies would benefi t Rongotai residents, Mr Shearer responded:

“Labour’s policies are about building an economy that works for everyone.

“Lower power prices don’t just help families pay their bills, they help our businesses compete. “Building

affordable houses doesn’t just help young people buy their fi rst home, it also creates thousands of jobs throughout the country.

“That’s why a hands-on government that puts people fi rst is actually better for the economy as a whole.

“For local people in Rongotai, that means a growing economy and a chance for everyone to get ahead.”

Rongotai Labour MP Annette King joined David Shearer after his speech to answer audience questions.

Chairperson of United Community Action Network Debbie Leyland asked if Labour would reverse Capital and Coast

District Health Board's funding cuts.Ms King received applause when she

responded Labour's commitment would always be in the primary health care area.

Other concerns raised were student allowances for post-graduate and older students, raising the retirement age, and youth rates.

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, said she attended the meeting because she wanted to hear the new leader of the Labour party and what his platform would be in government.

“He is the only credible alternative for NZ's economic growth,” she said.

has one issue grating on her nerves. She is appealing to Wellington City Council

to reconsider the design of the newly-installed drainage grates on Bay Rd.

Mac says she noticed the wave-patterned grates when out for a walk with her walking stick.

She immediately became concerned about the size of the gaps in the grate, which she says could trap a walking stick or a child's foot.

“I consider them extremely dangerous.”She says she is particularly concerned for

an almost-blind elderly friend who walks that route.

Councillor Leonie Gill, who was contacted by Mac, says she is also unhappy about the design of the grates.

“I'm concerned that while it might be good for cyclists, I'm not sure about a person's foot.

“As a woman wearing high heels I thought it was quite dangerous.”

Council spokesman Richard Maclean says the grates have been used around Wellington for about two years, as a replacement for traditional parallel-patterned grates which were dangerous for cyclists.

He says sometimes Wellington cyclists are forced to ride near the gutter on congested streets.

“Any grate presents a hazard for walking sticks or high heels.

“If we get an upsurge of people saying they're dangerous of course we'll review them.”

He says council will discuss the grates' risk to blind elderly walkers with its disability advisory group.

Elections a ‘whole new ball game’

By Nikki PapatsoumasThe Wellington Volun-

teer Fire Support Unit is making a plea for more volunteers.

It is their job to assist at fi re and rescue incidents, providing support to fi re-fi ghters.

Their roles include sal-vage, traffi c management, and setting up power and lighting to make a safe working environment for fi re-fi ghters.

John Klaphake is a part of the Wellington Volun-teer Fire Support Unit, and he says their role is quite specifi c in that they back up the front line fi re-fi ghters.

He says volunteers are

required to attend training on a Monday night, and other than that they work on an on-call basis.

All volunteers are sup-plied with a pager, and then are contacted when there is an emergency. Those who are available at the time will respond.

“Everyone is on call be-cause some can’t make it to the station on time. We would love for everyone to be available to come, but of course it depends on circumstances at the time.”

There are currently 12 volunteers and John says to be comfortable they would like to see that num-ber increase to somewhere

between 16 and 18.John says volunteer work

provides a real sense of satisfaction.

“There are a lot of things I find rewarding. I love the people who I work with and the experience they bring to it. It’s also about helping people in their time of need, in their

worst hour.“You get a sense of how

vulnerable people are after a fi re. All some of these people have left is the clothes they are standing in.”

Fire Service makes plea

By Nikki PapatsoumasNewtown resident Ber-

nard O’Shaughnessy says he is more than likely going to stand for mayor in the upcoming Local Government Elections.

Mr O’Shaughnessy pre-viously stood in the 2010 elections, and memorably removed himself from the running at the last minute, instead choosing to endorse rival Jack Yan. He still managed to come

away with around 1, 300 votes.

He says he decided to stand in 2010 because he was opposed to the previ-ous mayor, and wanted to see a new mayor elected.

However he says the 2013 elections are “a whole new ball game.”

“I want to see policies in council, and I want to see the right mayor elected. I believe in participation and democracy.”

Mr O’Shaughnessy says if he was standing for mayor some of his policies would include holding rate increases at 2.2%, letting Wellingtonians decide on Regional Governance and reducing licence fees for dogs.

He does not support the Flyover, and interestingly enough believes that the best option would be to get rid of the Basin Re-serve itself, a decision he

acknowledges may be controversial.

He says if he were elected he may be the only person on council who has lived and worked in every ward, something he believes gives him an edge.

Mr O’Shaughnessy has yet to set a decision in stone, and says he will make a fi nal decision after he sees who else comes forward over the next few months.

Bernard O’Shaughnessysays he is more than likely going to run for mayor this year

By Nikki PapatsoumasEastern Rocks Community Patrol

hit the streets every weekend to prevent crime before it happens.

The patrol group was formed two years ago by the police, and is made up of volunteers that are all police vetted and trained.

On Friday and Saturday nights they patrol the area from Hataitai all the way back to the eastern foreshore.

The patrol group are based out of the Miramar police station, and work very closely with police.

They are one of many community patrol groups around the country, and fall under Community Patrol New Zealand.

Chairperson and Secretary Kelly Hoar-Guthrie describes Eastern Rocks Community Patrol as “neighbourhood watch with wheels.”

Kelly says their job includes keep-ing people safe, stopping fi ghts, stopping drunk and dangerous driv-ers, preventing vandalism at local schools and ensuring shop safety.

She says boy racers have been a problem in the area, but their presence has helped to reduce the number of them on the streets.

She says they now have an amaz-ing alliance with police, and to-gether are helping to create a safer community.

The group is made up of a number

of different people, they work with people who have retired and their youngest member is 18.

Kelly is now trying to recruit more people to volunteer their time, and says anyone is eligible to take part.

Anyone who is interested will have to go through a police check and get security clearance. They will then go through a two hour training seminar.

“It’s a very sociable thing, you meet different people each time and form great friendships and relationships,” says Kelly.

If you would like to volunteer contact recruitment offi cer Fiona Bode on 027 767 4112.

Kindergarten is delighted to be back in their build-ing at Clyde Quay School.

For the past th ree months they have been in a temporary premise at St Marks School, while their building in Mount Victoria went through an earthquake strengthening process.

“mojo”, she says.“And then we have got a

council just sitting on their hands. We have got a dysfunc-tional council and too many of them have been there too long,” Ms Young says.

Ideas that Ms Young would like to bring to WCC if she were elected would be placing term limits for councillors, of up to four terms maximum.

“I think we need some fresh talent,” she says.

Ms Young grew up in Wel-lington attending St Mary’s Primary School in Thorndon;

she became head girl at Er-skine College in Island Bay and then studied news journal-ism at Wellington Polytechnic.

She started her career as a journalist writing for the Evening Post, before setting off to the United Kingdom and working at Lloyd’s of London Insurance for 18 years.

She came back to Wellington and stood for National in Rongotai in 2005.

Her father, Bill Young, repre-sented the Miramar electorate for National from 1966 to 1981.

Ms Young is the great grand-daughter of Wellington Mayor Sir John Luke who stood from 1913 to 1921.

“I grew up in a political family. I have been doing campaigns since I was seven.”

She says Wellington needs small streets lit up at night with LED lighting, particularly lanes.

Melbourne has similar fea-tures which are now a tourist attraction for international artists who paint graffi ti down well-lit lanes, she says.

“Wellington at night time is

pretty unappealing.”Another small idea she has

is placing street numbers on buildings.

“People wouldn’t get lost. It makes the city more livable.”

She would also like to see a National Art Gallery and a proper international airport – to encourage businesses to stay in town.

“I’m very good at making decisions. I’m hard-working.”

“I want to make Wellington New Zealand’s beating heart.”

they had to go that little bit further. Every family stuck with us through the three months and that is always nice.”

Wendy says that being a part of the Clyde Quay School environment is a great way to get children used to the routines and patterns of a school day,

and helps to make the transition much easier.

While the rebuild took place children had the chance to choose interior paint colours, and for the next few weeks they will be painting colour-ful murals around their brand new centre.

Head teacher Wendy Fraser and children discuss the mural they’ll paint in their brand new building.

Serving locals for over 15 years...

Salvatore Volpicelli and his wife Lilly Volpicelli own and run Fish Fins in Newtown.

By Nikki PapatsoumasFish Fins in Newtown has

been serving up fi sh and chips to the Newtown Community for 16 years, and their purple sign on Riddiford Street has become iconic to Newtown.

Owner Salvatore Volpicelli runs the business with his wife Lilly, and many would argue that they serve one of the best fi sh and chip meals in the area.

He says the key to his success is service with a smile, follow-ing old traditions, and keeping

things simple.“Our menu is simple and

basic, we just sell straight fi sh and chips.”

Salvatore has been in the fi sh game for 30 years, which he says has helped him to build up a regular client base.

“I’m from the old school, I stick with basic fi sh and chips. You won’t fi nd lots of different batter here,

“I am a loyal guy, and I make sure the product I give out is always nice and fresh.”

By Nikki PapatsoumasA SPCA Opshop is the

newest addition to the Bay Road shops in Kilbirnie.

The store was offi cially opened earlier this month and the Opshop is another way for the Wellington SPCA to ensure it has a sustainable future.

Everything in the store is donated, and work is volunteer based, with pro-ceeds going straight back to the Wellington SPCA shelter.

Manger Karyn Hall says so far interest in the store has been great, with a steady amount of people coming through the doors to see what the store has

to offer.Karyn says money made

through the store can really make a difference.

“There a re so many animals out there that have been neglected or abandoned and they need help,” she says.

“It’s great to have some-thing like this set up for animals as well because often people forget about animals.”

Operations Manager for the SPCA, Ros Alsford, says the money generated by the stores is paramount to their existence.

“Everyone has been so supportive with what we try and do with animal

welfare, and it all comes back to the animal shelter. We get no government funding.

“We want to cover as many communities as we can. We know Kilbirnie is a really great commu-nity and it’s also nearer to where we will be at the end of the year when we move into Fever hospital.”

If you have used goods you would like to donate to the SPCA Opshop in Kilbirnie, head to the store on Bay Road and speak to Karyn.

You can also fi nd infor-mation about animals that are up for adoption, and SPCA newsletters in store.

Infl uenza – or the fl u – is a virus that spreads quickly from person to person. Symptoms include fever, chills, aches, runny nose, a cough and stomach upset. Immunisation is your best defence against the fl u.

The infl uenza virus infects your nose, throat and lungs.

The fl u is normally worse than a cold.

In temperate climates such as New Zealand’s, you’re more likely to get the fl u in winter.

Some people get very sick – infl uenza causes deaths every year.

Symptoms of influenza come on suddenly and can include fever, chills, muscle

aches, runny nose, cough and stomach upsets.

Older people, young chil-dren, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions are at a higher risk of developing serious complications from infl u-enza, such as pneumonia.

If you’re at higher risk, it is important to see your doctor early, to fi nd out if you need treatment.

Immunisation is your best defence against infl uenza.

Even fi t and healthy peo-ple should consider getting the fl u jab to protect them-selves.

The flu spreads quickly from person to person through touch and through

the air.While you’re unwell, stay

away from work or school. Look after yourself and

your family – rest and fl uids are especially important.

Infl uenza can be caused by different strains of the infl uenza virus. (Symptoms for different types of fl u are the same.)

Signs and symptoms of infl uenza can include:fever (a temperature of 38°C or higher) cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, stomach upset, vom-iting or diarrhoea.

It may take up to three days to feel symptoms after you catch infl uenza.

Beware of Infl uenza- know the symptoms

Life for women has changed over time with increasing demands of the workplace on top of home and family responsibilities.

Exercise for women should not only improve physical health and mental well-being, it should be empowering, liberating, and enjoyable.

Whether you are seeking to look and feel better, fi ght aging, lose weight, tone and strengthen your muscles and joints, improve your cardio-respiratory

fi tness and fl exibility, relieve stress, or improve your athletic performance for a specifi c sport.

You can choose between a combina-tion of exercises in your programme ranging from Pilates, martial arts (Muay Thai, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do), boxing, Tai Chi, gymnastics, boot-camp, dance.

Your fi rst step is fi nding something you enjoy or want to improve, and just go for it!

The worst symptoms usu-ally last about fi ve days, but coughing can last up to two to three weeks.

High risk groupsPeople at higher risk of

developing complications if they get influenza in-clude: pregnant women and women who have just given birth, people with an ongo-ing health condition (like asthma, diabetes, cancer, a heart or lung condition, and conditions that affect the nervous or immune systems) signifi cantly over-weight people people aged 65 years or over, very young children, especially infants (under 1 year).

Drinking an adequate amount of f luid and fueling your body is as important in the winter as it is during the summer.

In the winter, the cold weather “blunts the thirst mechanism,” and you may not notice that you are thirsty.

Carry a small amount of food and water with you when you exercise outdoors, so you will have some nourishment if you need it.

Exercising in the cold increases your appetite as your body tempera-ture drops. Eating and digesting food warms your body.

Control your cravingsThe cold always seems

to tempt us to eat high-calorie snacks that we fi nd much easier to resist in the warmer months.

When you find your-self reaching for comfort food such as chocolate, hot puddings, breads and

cakes, satisfy your crav-ings instead with healthier alternatives.

Try porridge with cin-namon and stewed fruit instead of adding sugar, low fat yoghurt, a hand-ful of dry, reduced sugar cereal with a few raisins or sultanas, Pumpkin and sunflower seeds, Rice cakes with low fat cottage cheese and cucumber or a small handful of unsalted mixed nuts.

Here are some ideas to help you achieve your winter fitness goals

1: Before and after photos

In our minds we can run that 10km mara-thon, or fi t into those skinny jeans displayed in a fashion store win-dow.

But in reality what we think we look like, may not be what the mirror refl ects.

So to kick start your winter fitness goals, take a 'before' photo which you can look back at and see the difference your fi tness

training is making. It's also a great way

to steer yourself away from the 'treats'. Keep your photo somewhere you can see it often, on the fridge, in your wal-let or even in the car.

2: Goals BoardBy seeing your fit-

ness goals in front of you every day you wake up, will keep you motivated by remind-ing you of what you need to do that day.

Place coloured notes on the bedroom mir-ror, the bathroom door, the fridge, kitchen ta-ble and even the dog kennel, reminding you to walk the dog or visit

the gym that day.3: Keep a recordKeeping a record of

time spent exercising and any food you eat is another great way to keep tabs on your day to day activities.

Let's face it, many people can 'conveni-ently' forget certain foods they eat, telling themselves; "I'll make up for it tomorrow."

By writing every-thing down you are reminding yourself of what you have done and hopefully moti-vate you to do some exercise.

4: Update music playlist

Adequate uid is important when exercising in winter.

Fuel up for winter

Need fi tness motivation?

Music is something that motivates many people whether it be out walking, at the gym or at home. By up-dating your music regularly, it gives you something to look forward to and makes exercise more fun

5: Family challengeSet a family challenge so

everyone can help to moti-vate one another.

It can be to lose weight, to increase your fi tness or simply to enjoy some family time while out exercising.

Cycling is excellent for tness and a family activity.

James Davison from Newtown says he chose the name Jane because he was into “J” names.

Three-year-old Jane is a pug crossed with a Norwegian elkhound, and James says she was gifted to him from a friend along with her sister.

“A friend of mine called up saying they had two dogs so I went down and grabbed them both.”

James quickly found a home for one of the puppies, and kept Jane.

Jane visits the Lyall

Bay beach doggy park, and James says she is obsessed with playing fetch and swimming.

He says Jane defi-nitely has a personality of her own.

“She’s a great guard dog, she can be a bit bossy but she is well behaved and comes to work with me every day.”

The Marist St Pats Rugby Football Club has just launched the Marist St Pats Shamrock Foundation.

The foundation, which is a registered charitable trust, has been established to educate people of the benefi ts to health and well-being from participating in sports and recreational activities.

The foundation has been working in close partnership with St Pats College it-self, and together have worked closely to see the artifi cial turf property upgrade at the school get off the ground.

Foundation Chairman Bill Harrison says that the artifi cial turf project has

been in the works for a number of years now.

He says they have many more ideas on things they could develop in the Evans Bay Hub.

“The instillation of the artifi cial turf will provide the cornerstone to kick start a number of projects, some of which will benefi t the current sporting generation while others are focused on the future.”

Mr Harrison says the artifi cial turf will be opened to coincide with the opening season of school rugby, and expects the project to be completed any time now.

Poneke is looking for donations of money and gear to help support rugby in the Pacifi c Islands.

Boots for Grassroots began in January, and is run by Poneke stalwart Evan Belford.

The charity is sending equipment to Vanuatu, where Belford’s friend, Dave Lolo, helps to grow the game as part of Chiefs Rugby Academy Vanuatu.

So far, more than 150 pairs of boots and several signed jerseys have been donated.

The jerseys will be auctioned, with the proceeds going towards shipping costs.

Current Hurricanes Jeremy Thrush, Reggie Goodes, James Broadhurst and Dane Coles are among the donors.

Boots for Grassroots is still looking for sponsorship to help with shipping and organising rugby clinics on the island.

Belford, who manages Poneke’s Swin-dale Shield side, took on the project after retiring last season.

“I was trying to fi gure out what I could do, and I knew I wanted to focus on the Pacifi c Islands.

“There are a lot of talented kids out there that don’t get what we get here.”

Belford says the equipment gives

recipients more than just the chance to play rugby.

“Rugby’s allowed me to build my confi dence, discipline and maturity, and I think I grew up faster because of it.”

Belford hopes to expand the project over time.

“The big goal would be to go to an island every year, introducing rugby.”

He also hopes to take some of the stars of Kiwi rugby to the islands to coach.

The charity has two big-name ambas-sadors in Tamati Ellison and Scott Waldrom, both former Hurricanes and All Blacks.

Waldrom, who is coaching premier rugby at Avalon, is excited to be involved.

“I know even our local guys struggle to afford boots, and I can understand how it’s even tougher out in the islands, so when he put it in front of me I was more than willing to jump on board.”

Interested in donating? Email Evan Bel-ford at [email protected]

One of the country’s newest sports has held its biggest tournament yet, with Kilbirnie’s ASB Sports Centre hosting an open Turbo Touch tournament recently.

About 200 players from 21 teams, ranging from fi rst-timers to competitive players, attended the event.

Turbo Touch combines elements of sev-eral sports including touch rugby, netball, basketball and football.

Total Touch Offi cer for Wellington Tony Morrison says the game’s fast pace is one of its most striking features.

“It’s like doing shuttles for 15 minutes. “With rugby you can play for two minutes

then have a rest.“This is just fl at-out for 15 minutes gener-

ally.” The game was founded in 2009 by two

touch rugby players, Ike Tapine Wilson and George Albert-Jahnke.

Now the Touch New Zealand Operations

Manager, Mr Albert-Jahnke says he wanted to stay active during winter.

“We tried to do a winter touch competition, but because the grounds are always so wet and the weather’s bad, we couldn’t get any spots in town for the comps to run.”

Lack of space meant tournaments could not be held indoors, so the two devised a creative solution allowing athletes from different disciplines to train together.

“We said ‘let’s make it so netballers, rugby players, basketballers can all play on the

same court so it would have more appeal to more people.’

“No matter what game you come from, you can bring something to it, and because it’s still new, you can still be quite competitive.”

Four years on, the game is growing rapidly, with NCEA credits being offered by schools and the fi rst annual club championships to be held in Auckland in September.
