No, no – not me! But I can understand your confusion. No, the header up there refers to the fact that, just as the World Cup heats up, something vaguely resembling summer has arrived in the UK and, as such, the latest issue of the magazine the beautiful people of Paris are now calling ‘SVI’ has been hewn into being by the hammer of Vulcan himself in office temperatures rivalling those of his volcanic lair. Indeed, we always like to put something of ourselves into each issue, and so you’ll find SVI Jul-Aug not only choc-full of the latest installation innovations, but also sweetly scented by the delicate, feminine perspiration of Bontell, like the faint aroma of wild flowers on a summer zephyr, and also drenched to saturation point in the overpowering sweat-stench of myself – so something for everyone there.

Yes, it’s been hot and heavy work, but we think you’ll agree that it been more than worth the effort to forge an issue that is this jam-packed with every iota of installation information pertinent this precise point in time. Between these sun-kissed covers you’ll find an inferno of AV furniture, home cinema seating hotter than a heatwave in hell, and home automation tech straight from the scorched heart of Sol itself. All this, plus incendiary industry info from the experts, case studies that smoke with smart abilities, and all the usual news, views and interviews, adeptly cooked outdoors to barbecue perfection – burnt on the outside and full of delicious Salmonella on the inside.

My work here now done and the sun still shining, I’m off to the SVI rooftop garden to waterboard myself with G&T and sunbath until I burn in the best of British tradition. Enjoy!

CH…CH…CH…CHANGES The Bristol Hi-Fi Show, (previously Sound & Vision - The Bristol Show), organised by Audio T, is the largest and longest running consumer Hi-Fi Show in the UK. Held at the Marriott City Centre Hotel in Bristol every February, the Show has become the mainstay of the British Hi-Fi calendar and welcomes visitors and exhibitors from around the world. 2019 will be the 32nd year of this iconic event!

The Show has not stood still and although it started very much as a two-channel event called Hi-Fi’87, it morphed into showcasing a lot of Home Cinema followed by a lot of vision products, necessitating the name change to Sound & Vision. But now the trend has reversed somewhat and the show has become more two-channel again, which has left the equal billing of Sound & Vision a little misleading. The organisers also received feedback from attendees, often commenting on the perceived lack of Home Cinema.

So, although there will be many well-known AV brands, they make up a smaller percentage of the whole and it was felt that the time had come to again drop ‘Vision’ from the name. In reality it’s the name that most people have always called the Show and the organisers hope it will now better reflect what the show is about and make it clearer for future visitors, so they know what to expect.bristolshow.co.uk

LOUDSPEAKER LEGEND RETIRES After over 20 years of service, loudspeaker legend Dean Hartley has decided to retire. Dean has held the position of Technical Director since 1997 and during this time he has been a popular and respected member of Monitor Audio’s board.

Dean has led the design and development of new loudspeaker technologies and introduced innovative driver concepts and materials to create Monitor Audio’s globally-acclaimed ranges of loudspeakers. The Silver Series and the range-topping Platinum family are two of Dean’s most successful speaker designs.

Dean has grown Monitor Audio’s design team from one to 20 and his appointments are ready to build upon Dean’s legacy. Product design director, Charles Minett, has particularly enjoyed and benefited from working closely with Dean, most recently in the development of the class-leading Studio loudspeakers. Joining Charles will be Michael Hedges, who is returning to Monitor Audio after two and half years in the Infotainment team at Jaguar Land Rover. With the team that Dean has built, together with the appointment of Michael, Monitor Audio is well placed to continue to produce award-winning loudspeakers.

The Monitor Audio team and all at SVI wish Dean a happy retirement.monitoraudio.com

New? SVI’s round-up of all the very latest product news. If it isn’t here, it isn’t happening…

What’s

VIGOROUS VISIONA smarthome installation essential, the DrayTek VigorSwitch V1281 is a switch designed for distributing IP video feeds from multiple sources (e.g. set-top boxes, DVD-players, media systems, cameras etc.) over Ethernet/IP to multiple outputs (TVs, monitors or projectors). It’s suitable for homes, offices, pubs or restaurants or any commercial applications with multiple screens requiring easy distribution and selection.

The 28 ports on the VigorSwitch V1281 can each be set as either a source (input) or output and any output (screen) can then receive the video from any of the inputs. One port is always reserved for data/PC access. In the simplest configuration, you can use the V1281 as a fixed distribution system – one source distributing to up to 26 outputs (screens), but the real power and flexibility is in multiple sources and multiple outputs with each output selecting any of the sources.

Configuration of the V1281 is all performed from its web interface. This can be accessed locally from the LAN or remotely, if you have

100% PROOFProofVision have had their greatest year to date with the launch of their new Oral-B In-Wall Electronic Toothbrush Charger. This has drawn a lot of attention to the company and has truly shown their ability to provide true innovation to the electronics industry.

Alongside the launch of the toothbrush charger ProofVision announced their ‘Made In Britain’ title as it assembles two of their TV ranges here in the UK. The bathroom TV range being one of these assembled in the UK now offers a 50% margin for their resellers, giving them the ability to provide a sleek, modern, highly compatible product to their customers whilst making a great margin.

The bathroom TV range also boasts Control4 and Crestron drivers and expects more to follow. The range is available in sizes from 24-inch to 55-inch in black, white and mirror. Unique to ProofVision the TVs are also fitted with built-in vibration speakers that have proven popular with hotel installations. The TVs also offer the ability to add external speakers which has enabled them to be a highly compatible unit for all environments.proofvision.co.uk

remote access to your network (always use a VPN or other type of encrypted session such as https when accessing remotely). Set-up is intuitive, but also the at-a-glance reporting makes it easy to see what’s going on.

Control-wise, a smartphone app or the switch’s own web interface allows easy source selection for any of the screens or projectors. The VigotSwitch app is currently available for iOS and Android as a free download from the App/Play stores.

Remarkably flexible and child’s play to operate, installers can place multiple set-top boxes (cable or satellite receivers), each one tuned to a different channel, making it easy to switch different areas to different outputs in a home environment, with a user in any room able to select one of many sources.draytek.co.uk

NEW NADTop-end maker of high-performance audio/video components, NAD Electronics, have announced their new C 538, a performance CD-player engineered for musicality and designed as either a music lover’s first CD-player or as a quality replacement.

Though music downloads and streaming continue to grow in popularity, many consumers still have a vast collection of CDs and need a quality player to enjoy them, and many of the techniques NAD has perfected for Hi-Res Audio playback have been applied to the venerable CD format, including a high precision clock for lowest possible digital jitter performance and the latest generation Wolfson High Spec 24/192 DAC. The C 538 outputs include Stereo Analogue along with Coaxial and Optical Digital Outputs.

The C 538 supports MP3 and WMA playback. In addition to playing CD discs, it is also compatible with CD-R/CD-RW discs, allowing you to play customised CDs burned from a computer. Because these songs are encoded in MP3 or WMA, the user can fit up to 10 hours of music on a single disc which is perfect for party mixes or ambient listening. There are also both optical and coaxial digital outputs that allow connection to an external DAC or digital component (like an AVR) to provide the most efficient and best sounding system setups. The C 538 comes supplied with an IR remote and detachable AC cord.

Priced at £249.00, the NAD C 538 includes many desirable features that enhance listening experiences. Front panel controls are duplicated on the hand held remote allowing Play, Pause, Skip, and Scan functions, whilst the dimmable dot matrix display shows tracks and total playing time. nadelectronics.com

SCANDA STREAMSweden-based audio-producing overlord, Primare, has started shipping its first Prisma models: the I35 Prisma integrated amplifier/network player and CD35 Prisma CD/network player, incorporating new key Primare technologies.

Each of the new models features Prisma, Primare’s new whole-home, high-fidelity control and connectivity solution. The platform offers network playback from stored and streamed media, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection, as well as multiroom/multi-zone connectivity and control, all managed through the Prisma application, allowing Prisma system management from any mobile device.

A rradical reworking of Primare’s award-winning UFPD all-analogue Class-D technology. Providing 2x 150W (8-ohms) of absolutely linear amplification, the I35 Prisma delivers naturally fast, clean and agile sound across the entire audible bandwidth. In addition to fully balanced analogue input options, the I35 Prisma includes a full-featured DAC stage enabling PCM 768kHz and DSD 256 conversion, as well as Prisma connectivity and control technology.

A state-of-the-art TEAC CD drive, Prisma connectivity and control technology combine to create in the CD35 Prisma CD player a complete digital music source. The all-new DAC stage, utilising a superb-sounding ESS Sabre chipset for conversion of music files up to PCM 384kHz and DSD 256, feeds a finely-tuned balanced analogue output stage.

The modular nature of each of these configurations allows an I35 or I35 DAC to be updated with DAC and Prisma modules respectively, or CD35 CD player to have the Prisma module added at a later date.

Prices (inc VAT): I35 Prisma: £4000; I35 DAC (analogue and digital inputs, without Prisma): £3700; I35 (analogue only inputs, without DAC or Prisma): £3200; CD35 Prisma: £2900; CD35 (without Prisma): £2550.karma-av.co.uk

SMALL BUT MIGHTYNamed for their room-filling bass output, the new SuperSub X and XXL subwoofers from Karma-AV are surprisingly easy to accommodate. By exploiting a patented dual-plane ‘inertially-balanced’ driver and sub-bass radiator topology, driven by powerful Class D amplification, GoldenEar’s bijou bass engines will generate fast and fulsome low frequencies from beautifully unobtrusive gloss black cabinets.

Within each, two active drivers separated horizontally are configured with two passive radiators separated vertically in a balanced configuration designed to deliver a more even response in-room. At under 14-inch cubed, the ultra-compact SuperSub X uses a 1400W Class D amplifier to power twin 8-inch ultra-long-throw active drivers, supported by two 10.5x 9.5-inch planar infrasonic radiators. At under 20-inch cubed, the compact SuperSub XXL system deploys a 1600W Class D amplifier to drive twin 12-inch ultra-long-throw active transducers supported by two vertically-opposed 15x 13-inch planar infrasonic radiators.

Based on technology originally developed for the GoldenEar Triton One tower, the SuperSubs’ electronics packages feature discrete multi-band limiting and phase-perfect equalisation with a strong focus on keeping latency to an absolute minimum. Inputs include a direct-coupled, unfiltered LFE input for home theatre and stereo inputs with low-pass for two-channel setups.

Priced at £1450 for the SuperSub X and £2300 for the SuperSub XXL, model is available in a gloss black finish. karma-av.co.uk

A NEW ERA DAWNSNew from audio innovators Quad, their first ever headphones, the ERA-1, were developed with a planar magnetic driver that delivers a fast, open and transparent performance. The resulting sonic realism and fidelity to the source is fully in keeping with the brand’s heritage.

The Quad ERA-1 incorporates an ultra-thin, electrically active diaphragm – thinner than a human hair yet extremely strong and highly elastic, weighing less than the volume of air it displaces. This is fused with a precisely arranged magnet system, designed to maximise sensitivity and consistency of the applied force over the driver area.

Patented nonlinear vibration suppression technology allows the driver’s effortlessly extended frequency response to be heard unsullied, ensuring supreme clarity. The metal cavity behind the driver is specially designed for optimal acoustic performance, and the drivers themselves are closely matched to ensure spacious, three-dimensional stereo imaging.

Many planar magnetic headphones require high-power amplifiers to drive them. The Quad ERA-1 combines high sensitivity with low impedance to enable excellent performance with a wide range of partnering devices, from portable audio players to high-end headphone amps. Quad’s valve-based PA-One headphone amp/DAC makes a superb match for the ERA-1, combining sonic clarity and fluidity to stunning effect.

Priced at £599.95, robust construction and a premium finish deliver a suitably luxurious feel, yet the headphones are comfortably lightweight compared to many planar magnetic designs. Two types of ear cushion are provided – one made of soft leather, the other of latex topped with a fleecy fabric. A high-quality, detachable 215cm cable is also supplied, together with a durable carrying case.

Available from late July, mixing high-resolution sound, teeming with effortless musical expression – the ERA-1 headphones submerge the listener in the performance of their favourite musicians with direct and engaging intimacy. quad-hifi.co.uk

LITTLE WONDERWilson Audio has long been renowned for producing some of the most remarkable, audiophile-level loudspeakers in the world. And while TuneTot is the smallest and least expensive Wilson so far, it would be a mistake to view it as an “entry-level” offering. Rather, TuneTots are fabricated and assembled by the same group of talented craftsmen who build Wilson’s epic WAMM Master Chronosonic, using exactly the same processes and techniques, and each TuneTot that emerges from Wilson is held to the same rigorous, industry-leading manufacturing tolerances as its larger siblings.

Featuring a 5.75-inch Doper Paper Pulp rear vented Mid Woofer, 1-inch sealed Tweeter Dome of Doped Silk Fabric and a Minimum Amplifier Power of 25W/channel, to ensure absolute audio perfection, the speaker’s enclosure was analysed using Wilson’s state-of- the-art Laser Vibrometry system in order to optimise enclosure-wall thicknesses and the strategic implementation of the proprietary composites. With this precision instrument, WSAE engineers can readily detect even the tiniest enclosure vibrations. But, Wilson’s they didn’t stop there – perfectly rectangular enclosures are inexpensive and easy to build but suffer from music-destroying internal reflections, so TuneTot’s enclosure is asymmetrical, ensuring no internal surface is parallel.

As to TuneTot’s aesthetics, Wilson is introducing five new paint colours and two new hardware anodised colours (for a total of four), although owners are able to custom configure their loudspeakers with just the right combination of paint colour choice, and hardware and grille colours based on their individual aesthetic desire and installation needs. And price reflects choice, with the TuneTot retailing at US $9800 or $10,500 per pair, depending on the which colour is selected!absolutesounds.com

Among the extensive range of products manufactured by Sanus, three of the company’s TV wall mounts are proving particularly popular with installers, as they offer the perfect solutions for the majority of TV installation scenarios they come across.

Covering the majority of screen sizes, and in particular focusing on the increasingly popular large screen sizes, the VLT6, VMF620 and VLF628 provide options for tilting and full motion installations.

The VLT6 is a tilting design for use with screens from 42- to 90-inches that features an innovative extension design that redefines what a tilting mount can do. This clever engineering solution permits flexibility of position without the walls restricting the downward tilt – a problem found with most tilting mounts when used with large screens. The very cleverly designed scissor mechanism enables a 14.5cm (5.75-inch) extension away from the wall, which permits a greatly enhanced tilting motion to be achieved. Yet, when folded away, the mount sits just 7cm (2.75-inches) from the wall for a slim and unobtrusive look.

Bringing full motion to screens sized from 37- to 50-inches and weighing up to 34kg, the VMF620 has been designed to provide more flexible viewing angles and a number of enhanced installation features. The pre-assembled universal VESA mounting system speeds up install time significantly. And thanks to the robust three-arm construction, a fluid motion 50cm (20-inches) extension and 180 swivel can be achieved without any reduction in mounting stability. Innovative solutions, such as 30cm post installation lateral shift and lockable level adjustment set this mount apart from its rivals. With new decorative hardware covers for a sleek and clean finished appearance, hollow arms for hidden cable management and an included hardware pack for maximum TV model compatibility, the VMF620 is a perfect mount for installers to keep to hand.

For much larger TVs requiring full motion, the VLF628 is a heavy-duty mount for use with large TVs, while retaining a low-profile depth and comprehensive adjustment capabilities. Like the VMF620, the VLF628 uses the same mounting and articulation technology, adapted for use with TVs featuring screen sizes from 42- to 90-inches and weighing up to 68kg. Its fluid full-motion operation permits swivel, tilt and extension from the wall from 82mm to 710mm. A six-arm articulating design provides a very stable environment for the Universal TV interface. Once the screen is attached to the

SANUS MOUNTS

arms via the open landing pad, which engages with an audible click as a safety assurance, the user has finger-tip control over screen tilt from +5 to -15 degrees with the Sanus VirtualAxis™ system and swivel of up to 74 degrees can be achieved.

Ben Osborne, Senior Director, International Consumer Products, says: “If installers are going to pick just a small number of mounts to keep stocks of, the VLT6, VMF620 and VLF628 are the perfect ones for them to choose. With these three models, the vast majority of installations can be accommodated and serviced quickly and easily, without the need to order a special mount and therefore potentially delay the installation process.” He continues: “And, as with all Sanus mounts, safety and ease of installation and use were the top priorities for the design engineers and so both the installers and their customers can be confident that their expensive and heavy TV will be safely and securely mounted to the wall if they use one of these mounts.”sanus.com

SMARTER HOMES

Installing advanced AV entertainment kit is one thing, but tying that in

with HVAC, lighting control and all other elements of automation

requires some cunning control…

A host of new features, simplified programming and a more fluid interface has put HDL’s app at the forefront of home automation and control. The 2018 updates were developed from installer and end-user feedback, delivering an app that is easy to configure yet offers the latest must-have features and functionality.

The HDL app’s expansive new library of built-in commands makes programming simple using drop-down menus. Simply input the IP address of the connected device and the app auto-populates with all available commands for that device. There is no need to import commands from third party sources, saving time and ensuring there are no command conflict issues.

In addition to the built-in command library, recent HDL app updates include shortcut functions for lights, curtain closures and thermostat controls. For AV installs, the app now includes a raft of projector

The human race has come a long way since the dark old days of having to get up and walk across a room to achieve something, such as turning a light on or off or changing channel on the TV. And thank the gods of remote control for that – we don’t have the stats to hand, but it’s fair to assume that literally more than one life has been saved by not having to come into direct contact with mains-powered devices.

Today, of course, remote control works everything and has, itself, become infinitely smarter and more flexible to the point that it sits at the heart of the intelligent home, affording owners the ability to do almost anything via their phones and tablets. And who affords remote control the ability to do it? Why, the likes of these…

and electric screen commands as well as automatic source selection. The app integrates seamlessly with HDL Buspro and Buspro Wireless, HDL keypads and Blustream matrices and switchers, also available from Alltrade.

HDL’s extensive range of programmable and touch-screen keypads have also proven very popular with Alltrade’s installers. The HDL keypad range spans simple Intelligent keypads with customisable buttons, available in a selection of finishes and colours, to HDL’s sophisticated touch screen Enviro Panel. With products aimed at mid-budget installs, HDL’s keypads can manage energy consumption, HVAC, lighting and security in a minimalist, user friendly and affordable package.

“Home Automation is becoming an ever more significant part of our business,” adds Lee Harding, Technical Director for CI. “Many of our trade

customers now offer lighting, heating and shading control as a matter of course, with security and CCTV also becoming popular. While many distributors offer free training and delivery, Alltrade is unique in offering seven Trade Counters for local training, immediate product supply and face to face help and advice when you need it. Each site also offers a free project planning service for all your home and commercial automation projects.

A comprehensive range of HDL and Blustream products is available from Alltrade’s seven Trade Counters or by mail order with next day delivery, often by Alltrade’s own fleet and drivers. INDUSTRY INSIGHTTHIS ISSUE WE SPEAK TO OWEN HAIGH, HEAD OF GLOBAL PRODUCT MANAGEMENT AND CHRISTIAN WESTENHÖFER,

HEAD OF GLOBAL MARKETING & BRAND MANAGEMENT AT LINDY ABOUT THEIR RECENT REDESIGN…

SO, WHY HAVE YOU REDESIGNED YOUR ENTIRE CABLE RANGE?CW: A brand’s relationship with its customers is similar to every other relationship in society. It’s something you have to work on and it’s important to be attractive and relevant in business. Our homes, workplaces and even entire cities are changing, so it was time for a refresh.OH: This redesign isn’t just for clarity of customers though, it’s allowed us to redevelop our cables from the copper up to increase performance, and reliability across the entire range.

THEN THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A VISUAL DIFFERENTIATOR BETWEEN THE CABLES?OH: The visual design definitely helps customers choose the perfect solution for their application. But it’s also important that form follows function and the cables have different technical specifications depending on the environment they’re developed for. For example, our HDMI Gold Line cables feature 99.99% OFC, long life, large cross section, low attenuation conductors, in contrast to this our Black Line HDMI cables are high-quality CCS construction making them a value proposition whilst retaining premium performance.CW: The technical specifications, availability and visual design are difficult to radically change across a large range of products. So, in the

beginning we weighed exactly how drastic that the change is and finally settled on an efficient, contemporary development. Everything we’ve done with the Cable Lines has been informed by our market research and the identification of four different sectors within the market.

HOW DID THIS CABLE LINES PROJECT COME ABOUT?CW: The process was kickstarted when we began our larger marketing efforts with our corporate rebranding. We have adapted our business, these cables included, to the requirements of the digital world. The Cable Lines project is also a commitment to our new philosophy and corporate strategy. We’re not a sleeping giant, we’re always trying to change and evolve our services and products.

By standardising our cables we’ve managed to create a customer experience that is much more fluid and satisfying.

WHY DID YOU END UP CATEGORISING THEM BY COLOUR? RATHER THAN JUST BY THESE SECTORS YOU’VE IDENTIFIED?CW: The colour concept came about as a way of creating an easy visual identifier for each Cable Line. Colours are easily recognisable across all nations and cultures, and this is a global project that needed a global identify. Paired with the new design, these colours offer clarity through

reduction and helps us focus on meeting the requirements of our business partners.

A CABLE IS A CABLE IN THE END, IS THIS REALLY THAT SIGNIFICANT OF A SHIFT?OH: There’s a lot of misinformation surrounding the industry. Particularly in the consumer space, other companies might talk about their cables being capable of ‘blacker blacks’ or other colour quality improvements which just don’t exist. We want to dispel this misinformation and give our customers clarity. Our cables are all about real technical improvements in length and reliability.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE FUTURE OF LINDY AND YOUR OTHER RANGES?CW: Right now we’re just focusing on launching the new cable lines. But for sure this is just the beginning with our new strategy and outlook. The process and end-result of our cable lines will inform what we do with other ranges in the future.OH: The core values of this project can certainly be carried forward into other product ranges. We always want to learn from a process and apply that across our whole product portfolio to provide customers with the same clarity and information that we’re giving them with the new cables.lindy.co.uk

SVI HOME CINEMA SEATING

FRONTROWLeading distributor, AWE, has added cinema seating from UK specialist, FrontRow™, to its extensive range of products, brands and services for home technology integrators.

“Quality cinema seating is a significant detail for installers seeking to create the best, most enjoyable movie-watching experiences for their clients,” comments Stuart Tickle, Managing Director AWE. “FrontRow cinema seating is the perfect choice for a wide range of Cinema rooms. Luxurious European design combines with ultra-quiet internal, reclining motors in an exceptional range that’s backed by a comprehensive five year warranty that covers everything from mechanics to the seat fabric itself. Installers can be assured that using FrontRow is the ideal way to complete that premium home cinema project.”

Integrators can savour the FrontRow experience for themselves at the AWE show apartment in Epsom. Here, seating from the brand-new Serenity collection features within the AWE KEF THX home cinema. A dual motor for independent control of seat, footrest and headrest ensures the seat can adapt easily to occupant size, posture and comfort requirements. Serenity is available in a wide choice of different fabric types and colours and can be easily scaled to fit the design of the room, from single seats to rows of 12. Integral USB charging ports are provided.

Installers can access the AWE home cinema, featuring the FrontRow seating, as a demonstration facility for clients. Prices start at £3390 for a three-seat option in a fabric finish, and £4590 in high grade leather. For more details on the Serenity range from FrontRow, and to see the entire home cinema offering from AWE, visit awe-europe.com.

After installing all the advanced AV, it’s time to please client posteriors with the most comfortable and accommodating cine seats around…

Those of us old enough to remember what it was like before the multiplexes and their ‘Superior’ seats came along and we had to make do with the rigid, barely upholstered and, generally, stained seating of the local fleapit Palace cinema, will be only too familiar with the importance of a comfortable chair when engaged in a cinematic epic. But, whilst said Superior seats are all well and good for Joe Public, the install world knows about an upper echelon of AV entertainment accommodation available only to those who choose to cinema at home…

SVI HOME CINEMA SEATING

PALLADIO FIRENZEThe new powered Palladio Firenze range in beautiful black leather has been specified by Habitech to meet the standards of performance, reliability and support that exemplify luxury. The modular format gives you all the permutations you’ll need to create the perfect bespoke seating design for any room. Alongside the single seat, the left and right arm models combine in a typical ‘love seat’ arrangement or as a luxury curved twin seat with the wedge divider in between. Introduce the armless seat to build a row of seats: three, four, five or more placed together or separated by the optional straight arm divider to fill the width of the room. Extend a curved arrangement with the wedge arm divider in a similar way. Palladio’s Firenze models unite in every way possible to create the ideal seating for any space.

For Firenze we’ve upgraded the cushion design from an inter-connected open-coil spring type to a more specialised pocket-sprung system. Mounted on the rigid, solid-wood Firenze frame, the luxury pocket-sprung tech involves hundreds of individual springs housed in dedicated fabric pockets. Each spring reacts only to the weight pressing on it, so the cushion is able to provide the optimum level of support to each part of your body and offer a higher quality of comfort you’ll notice immediately.

Just like all top-of-the-range designs, Palladio Firenze offers advanced two-stage seat adjustment, which activates the footrest extension before the back begins to lower, allowing you the most precise adjustment. The wall-away/incline mechanism moves the seat forward with minimal back tilt to accommodate close-to-wall positioning, so you needn’t sacrifice space for the ultimate in custom comfort.habitech.co.uk

FRONTROW SERENITYThe Serenity from home cinema seating specialist, FrontRow, has been designed for maximum style and comfort. Featuring a more contemporary design, dual motor controls to adjust the recliner and headrest independently and a USB charging port, Serenity retails from £1275 offering excellent value for money and healthy dealer margins.

Serenity seats feature a dual motor to independently adjust the headrest as well as recliner, supporting the end-user in an optimum viewing position. In addition, the seats now feature contemporary polished chrome feet and USB ports for charging smart devices with home control and gaming controllers. The seats also incline for close-to-wall operation.

Top quality leather is used throughout the upholstery and the extensive colour range now includes an elephant grey, sunshine yellow and orange, as well as the traditional home cinema black and red. Serenity is also available in fabric with a number of more subtle hues and a range of textures. Accidental damage to the upholstery is included in the comprehensive five-year warranty.

With several Serenity modules to choose from, with or without arms, endless straight or curved seating configurations are possible. A new “chaise” module can be added to the end of rows, and a loveseat (double chair with no central armrest) can be incorporated within the rows of seating.frontrow-seating.co.uk

FEATURES• Dual motor for independent control of the headrest and recliner• USB charging port• New design including polished chrome feet• Cup holder incorporated into the arm rest• A space-maximising inclining mechanism that allows seating to be placed close to a wall• Comprehensive five-year warranty which also covers accidental damage to the upholstery • Optional accessories include cup holder caps and trays

Talking tech on the continent, this issue, SVI’s international enquirer, DAVE SLATER, hears what the French have to offer the audiophile…

INSI E CIIt was time to leave London HQ for an Inside CI trip to manufacturer Focal-JMlab, which is a French company that has been designing and selling high-fidelity audio systems since 1979. This Saint-Étienne-based company manufactures loudspeakers for the home, speaker drivers for automobiles, headphones and professional monitoring loudspeakers.

The factory tour started off with showing us the manufacturing of the cones, the cone we were seeing produced was a sandwich concept which was called the ‘W’ cone system it consists of two sheets of glass fibres applied to a structural foam core. Unlike the mono-material cones, the ‘W’ sandwich cone optimises the frequency response curve by maximising the mass, rigidity and damping. It became apparent from the start that everybody involved was super-passionate about working in this factory.

Focal’s industrial strategy concentrates on having full control over the entire production process, from the design and manufacturing of the speaker drivers to the assembly of the final product. Focal-JMlab generates a €53-million annual turnover and employs about 200 people at its facility, which groups the production, R&D and management departments at the same site. Focal has an impressive range of speakers with the flagship ones being the Utopia III Evo, since their launch in 2008 the Utopia III has become a worldwide success. One of the high points of the factory tour was to audition a pair of these speakers in Focal’s demonstration room, and I have to say I was completely blown away by the detail on all the tracks that were played.

FOCAL POINTAnother really good-looking and sounding speaker in the range is the Kanta. Focal put in three years of research and design into this model, the speaker is made up from the FAX cones and is marriage with a Beryllium tweeter. In 2002, Focal launched the Beryllium Tweeter, which was only the second time a tweeter had ever been manufactured from Beryllium. Yamaha had introduced the Beryllium tweeter and Beryllium mid-range speaker in the NS-1000 back in 1974. Beryllium is seven times more rigid than titanium (six times more rigid than aluminium) but has the same mass. It enabled Focal to develop a lighter and faster tweeter which provides excellent damping qualities. When associated with the inverted dome concept, the frequency response can be increased to 40kHz, and more than five octaves can be spanned. The room that the Beryllium is formed into the tweeter is completely dust free and the engineer is dressed like somebody out of Alien. The weight of this tweeter is no heavier than a feather.

2018 also sees the launch of two new built-in speaker ranges from Focal the entry level 100 Series and mid-priced 300 series. With both series offering a wide range of sizes and configurations, we were presented with a demo of the 300 LCR series and again the tonal clarity of these speakers was amazing. One other neat feature is how the speaker is fitted into the wall or ceiling, no screwdrivers are needed just cut the hole and push the speaker into it the clamps then grip the plasterboard.

PRIME PLEASUREI read with interest that Primare has launched its first Prisma network models, specifically the I35 Prisma integrated amplifier/network player and CD35 Prisma CD/network player. The Prisma platform offers network playback from stored and streamed media, along with multiroom/multi-zone operation, managed through a dedicated Prisma app. The I35 Prisma integrated amplifier is the first to use the brand’s new UFPD 2 power system, a reworking of Primare’s a UFPD all-analogue Class-D technology, offering 2x 150W (into 8-ohms).

In addition to fully balanced analogue input options, the I35 Prisma includes a DAC stage with PCM 768kHz and DSD 256 conversion. Built around a Teac CD drive, the CD35 features all-new DAC stage, utilising an ESS Sabre chipset for conversion of music files up to PCM 384kHz and DSD 256. The top of the range I35 Prisma amplifier retails for £4000; the I35 DAC (with analogue and digital inputs, but without Prisma) sells for £3700. A version of the I35 with analogue inputs, but no DAC or Prisma connectivity is available for £3200. The CD35 Prisma CD player will sell for £2900, or £2550 without Prisma.

SVI CEDIA SCENE

As we inch closer to the highly-anticipated CEDIA Awards black tie event, MATT NIMMONS, Managing Director at CEDIA® EMEA, discusses how the programme has evolved…

THE CEDIA SCENE

For over a decade, CEDIA has gathered the industry together for an evening that is dedicated to celebrating the ultimate smart home projects, products and individuals in the industry. This year, the CEDIA Awards will return for another spectacular evening on Thursday 27th September at the British Museum in London.

The ceremony will include a glittering drinks reception in the Egyptian Sculpture Gallery, and a three-course dinner beneath the stars in the Great Court complete with evening entertainment. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the treasures and artefacts of the Museum collection, with symbolic objects and architectural pieces ranging from the time of the Old Kingdom to the middle of the Roman Period.

BACK IN TIMEThe CEDIA Awards rose from humble beginnings in 2006, where four awards, including Best Installation under £20,000, Best Installation £20,000 – £100,000, Best Installation over £100,000 and Best Multi-Dwelling Installation were picked up. Year on year, the awards programme has progressed from a string of world-class heritage sites and glittering ceremony halls, to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter in 2017.

The profile and stature of the event has continued to grow, bringing significant publicity and marketing opportunities for participating companies. It is an established platform on which to celebrate excellence within the industry and to be recognised on a global scale by fellow industry professionals, by the press, and by the public. Plus, everyone loves a trophy, right? From attracting 41 entries in its first year to over 100 in 2018, the CEDIA Awards is the industry honour that everybody wants.

THE STATS: 2006-2017A grand total of 1291 projects have been entered since the first Awards programme 2006, with 180 trophies being awarded to the worthy winners.

CEDIA’s global reach has led to 17 different countries around the world participating in the programme. No matter where you are in the world, it’s easier than ever to get involved.

The numbers speak for themselves: 3,241 guests have attended CEDIA Award evenings over the years. From the vaults of The Brewery and The

Vinopolis to the grounds of The Tower of London, and The Royal Naval College to The Guildhall, who wouldn’t?

Custom Installation Nation

Smart-e have introduced the first in Smart-e’s new ‘Neptune’ range, the 4K 9:9 ‘Neso’. The Neso is a modular channel distribution unit, built with ease of installation and maintenance in mind.

Extending high speed video signals is one of those unseen but essential aspects of AV installations, and while individual TX/RX pair devices with separate PSUs can do the job, a modular unit is ideal for any installer looking to create a compact, reliable and future proofed installation for the client.

To accomplish this, the Neso allows for up to nine 4Konnect modules to be housed conveniently in a 19-inch rack mounting unit, capable of transmitting or receiving up to nine different 4K UHD video signals and then repeating them to over 100m of CAT 6 cable. An integrated internal PSU powers all modules and provides inline power to the external transmitter and receivers, removing the need for external power supplies.

Each bay has a universal connection system allowing either a transmit or receive module to be installed. This approach enables the installer to select which combination of input/output modules to suit their individual application. Modules can be added later providing on-site expansion capability, including:

NEW TO NEPTUNE

The original dnp Supernova XL Screen remains the world’s largest optical front projection screen that’s available as a single-screen solution, offering an excellent viewing experience and perfectly flat image. Now dnp denmark has announced the next-generation Supernova XL, which delivers an even better picture.

“We’ve eliminated the overlap of the screen materials to ensure an image without any visible seams, which is the key to the best viewing experience,” says dnp VP Global Sales & Marketing, Soeren Kraemmergaard. “Our true optical lens technology delivers crisp high-contrast images without users having to dim the lights or draw the curtains.”

The new Supernova XL is available in sizes up to 230-inches in 16:9 format. Delivering an excellent viewing experience with near flat-screen quality, it’s an ideal and cost-effective solution for large venues such as big conference rooms, auditoriums and houses of worship. The combination of size, cost and performance also makes it an affordable alternative to dnp’s popular Supernova Infinity Screen.

The new Supernova XL Screen is designed to be transported rolled up in boxes of only 900mm x 900mm (length determined by screen height), which significantly reduces transport and handling costs. Two people can then assemble the screen on site in just a couple of hours, saving time and labour costs.dnp-screens.com

4K-MOD-TXF ‘Asteroid’: An HDBT transmitter module capable of transmitting UHD resolution video over 100m of Cat6 cable

4K-MOD-RXF ‘Comet’: An HDBaseT receiver module capable of receiving UHD resolution video over 100m of Cat6 cable

These 4Konnect modules can be mixed and matched to create a versatile solution to any installation requirements. The modular nature of the Neso allows for the mixing of CAT 6 TX & RX modules together with local HDMI pass through, providing the installer with a flexible and efficient method of designing a flexible, future proofed, reliable and easily to repair installation.

Each module position supports full HDMI digital video and embedded audio, with compatibility for

HD 720p, 1080p, Ultra HD 2K and 4K resolutions together with pass through support for EDID, HDCP, CEC and control protocols. Each bay also allows for full duplex RS232 and reverse path IR.

The 4K-9:9 can be interconnected with any other 4Konnect modular product which allows the designer to configure the install exactly as needed. The 1RU 19-inch form factor of the 4K-9:9 enables the device to be conveniently mounted within an AV rack, cabinet or credenza, using detachable rack ears.

The Neso excels in its role as a channel distribution unit, and ca be used in a variety of installations including video walls extensions, command and control centres, repeat solutions between buildings and emergency control vehicles.smart-e.co.uk

The Chord Company’s new Shawline Power cable is a high-quality (lifetime-warranty) mains product that perfectly complements the Shawline range’s digital and analogue signal-carrying cables, whilst drawing on the company’s 30+ years’ experience in producing high-quality AV cables.

Featuring an advanced design, Shawline Power has evolved from its predecessor, the Power Chord, and now features a number of significant design and construction improvements. The upgrades have been introduced to improve the overall resolving power and dynamics of connected AV components, and have simultaneously introduced a worthwhile update of a time-proven Chord Company favourite. Chord’s legendary build standards mean the same principles, methodology and know-how applied to the signal-carrying cables are also implemented in the power products.

The new cable benefits from design cues and construction techniques developed for the company’s flagship power cables, whilst retaining real-world affordability. Shawline Power features a greatly improved conductor which benefits from a noticeably thicker stranded core. It uses 3x 14 AWG high-purity multi-strand copper conductors in a parallel layout, with a dual-layer floating shield. The unique shielding system means it can also improve

picture quality when used with projectors and screens.

Its dual-layer high-frequencyeffective braid and foil combination outer shielding system gives the cable additional protection from the RF interference generated by many of today’s household devices. Shawline Power also benefits from internal and external PVC insulation with a high mechanical damping factor. The cable is beautifully finished with a high-density vibration-damping outer jacket.

and control, scaling, processing, encoding, and encryption – all with zero frame latency over a 10GbE network using the hardware/software standard of SDVoE.

Featuring a plethora of powerful industry-focused features for commercial applications, including video wall and multi view of up to 32 separate source streams, the benefits of the 600 Series are not only felt in specialist or mission critical applications,

such as medical, visualisation, and large-source monitoring in command and control applications, but also boardrooms, where real time images can be displayed with no image lag.

IN THE AIRRTI have announced the availability of a two-way driver for Aprilaire’s line of Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats. The interface allows integrators to add the thermostats into the RTI control and automation ecosystem and provide clients with the comfort and convenience of Aprilaire’s air purity and freshness features along with temperature and humidity controls.

“Aprilaire is one of the leading HVAC systems for high-end residential installations and a long-time integration partner of ours,” said Mike Everett, vice president of sales, Americas for RTI. “With this partnership, we’re able to deliver a powerful driver that takes full advantage of their climate control capabilities and give our dealers the ability to offer their clients an extra level of comfort in their homes.”

Developed by RTI, the two-way driver allows the RTI system to monitor and control Aprilaire’s four newest Wi-Fi thermostat models via RTI’s line of control interfaces, including the company’s RTiPanel

IN THE ETHERJust Add Power (J+P) unveiled their new 725POE 2GΩ/3G+ SDI Power over Ethernet (PoE) transmitter at June’s InfoComm at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

“As SDI has become more popular with our commercial integrators, they’ve asked for a transmitter that would work with 4K. Our new offering meets this need and gives them more flexibility,” said Taft Stricklin, sales team manager at Just Add Power. “When combined with our tiling devices, enterprise and houses of worship customers can enhance their video distribution platform with appealing, professional features such as fading between cameras. It also allows them to scale any resolution up to 4K or scale 4K down to a lower resolution – all without breaking copy protection. This transmitter is another building block that adds more value to our ever-expanding 4K platform.”

The new J+P 725POE 2GΩ/3G+ SDI PoE transmitter provides SD-/HD-/3G-SDI format support to Just Add Power’s 3G HD over IP system. Eliminating the need for an SDI-HDMI converter in the IP video distribution chain, integrators have the flexibility to add an SDI source to their 4K infrastructure. Features include stereo output with audio delay, local HDMI loop-out, null-modem-integrated RS-232, and HDMI pass-through. As with all models in the J+P line-up, it integrates seamlessly with any generation of the company’s products. This allows integrators to select the J+P solution that best fits the job, providing an evolutionary, scalable, systems-approach to 4K video signal distribution requirements.justaddpower.com

SVI CLARITY COMMENT

Combining his two great loves – music and beer – PHIL HANSEN looks at the parallels between the audio and alcohol industries…

Along with his duties at the Clarity Alliance, Phil Hansen also runs Red Sheep, a successful marketing and PR consultancy operating within and outside the Hi-Fi industry.

CLARITY CALLSI like beer. Have done for a long time, ever since I was legally (ahem!) allowed to drink it. Like many youngsters it probably started with tins of Carling, Hofmeister or Skol purchased from the local ‘offie’ where they didn’t ask questions. It was nasty stuff really and never drunk again once I’d discovered proper beer. Growing up in Yorkshire we had the best beers on the planet available to us (maybe a little biased, but there again probably not – it is the home to the best beer) and I have made a career out of trying to taste as many of them as possible. But that’s becoming an uphill struggle, because the number of new beers emerging is increasing at an exponential rate.

According to CAMRA (must grow my beard) there were 1424 breweries in the UK in 2015, with 204 having opened that year. The following year it rose to 1924 a growth of 18% and by October 2017 the figure had gone past 2000, demonstrating growth of 64% over the past five years.

Is it sustainable though? The funding of these new craft beer producers is often through investment funds and vulture capitalists who are looking for a quick return on their investments. And that inevitably means there will be mergers and acquisitions taking place as the investors look to get their money and profits out of the businesses.

BOOZE & BLUESThere’s an interesting parallel to be drawn with the Hi-Fi industry here. We are constantly seeing new companies springing up, producing a new valve

amplifier or a new set of speakers. Often, they are the results of the ‘man in a shed’ approach to business start-up, with an enthusiast building one for himself and then deciding to launch it on to the world stage – just like the craft beer. We find new brands at every Hi-Fi show, some with something genuinely special to offer and others with an also ran product. Sometimes it works

and there are takers for the product and we see them back at subsequent shows and read the reviews in the magazines and sometimes they don’t make the cut.

And then there’s consolidation and the buy outs. We’ve seen a few of these in recent months in our sector, with some well-known names being bought out by bigger companies, often so they can take advantage of the technology and expertise of the dedicated and clever engineers. With the breweries, when they are taken over, the beer is often tweaked to better suit the mass production methods of their new parent and not that often with good results.

It’s kind of inevitable that changes will be made to products when companies are taken over. Technologies are merged, buying power dictates some of the ingredients, mass manufacturing removes some of the careful fine tuning and profit pressures can result in cost- and corner-cutting.

REAL SOUND BARSThe retail side of things is quite similar between the beer and audio industries too. The decline in the number of traditional pubs has been staggering. So too is the reduction in independent Hi-Fi shops on the high street – estimates put the number at around 40% of what it was just 15 years ago. On the flip-side, in the beer world, advantage has been seized by the likes of Weatherspoons, which specialises in buying very well (often beers nearing their sell-by dates) and passing those savings on to the customer. And, of course, we are familiar with the consumer champion model in our industry too. What we’re not really seeing though is the rise of the micro Hi-Fi shop in the same way as micro pubs are springing up. These small bars often specialise in one or two brands of beer, often including one brand they make themselves. It’s a direct to consumer, but via a shop, business model that gives the smaller companies a high street outlet. Maybe this is the next thing in audio retailing – shops owned and run by the smaller manufacturers or in conjunction with our existing retailers. That would be interesting.

Cheers.

SVI CASE STUDY: ELAN

HOMES FOR

HEROESMaking life better and providing smart self-reliability at home for injured U.S. veterans, the Gary Sinise Foundation uses ELAN to bring automation intelligence to another project…

Bronze Star and Purple Heart Recipient, Corporal Alan Babin Jr., recently received a brand new custom-built, specially adapted smarthome from the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment), with home control and entertainment equipment donated by Nortek Security & Control (NSC), which included an ELAN® Entertainment & Control system, plus solutions from SpeakerCraft, Sunfire and Panamax.

At 22 years old, Babin enlisted in the U.S. Army and began serving his country as a medic with the elite 82nd Airborne Division. While rushing to aid a wounded soldier on March 31st, 2003, Babin was struck by enemy gunfire, and has since endured dozens of surgeries, the loss of several internal organs, and permanent limits on his mobility.

STAR OF TEXASAccording to Robert Ridenour, General Manager of J.J. Orion, installers of the high-tech control equipment in the Austin, Texas-area home, providing this American hero with increased independence and control is one of the greatest uses of smarthome control technology.

“Alan is a true American hero, a man who risked his life to protect the life of a fellow soldier, and he deserves to live as comfortably as possible,” Ridenour said. “J.J. Orion is proud to have played a role in providing him with increased self-sufficiency in his new home. Utilising the full capabilities of the ELAN control system and peripherals like lighting, media and security, Alan can now control his home environment and take charge of more daily activities without assistance.”

Ridenour oversaw the integration of third party systems including room-to-room intercoms, Vantage lighting, QMotion motorised window shades, motorised doors for easy access, surveillance cameras, thermostats, security, Niles and Sunfire audio, and house-wide video distribution. With all of these systems easily controlled through the intuitive ELAN mobile app on Babin’s wheelchair-mounted iPad, management of his entire home is just a touch away.

SMART SUFFICIENCYThe single-floor house is built to the specifications of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) with extra-wide doors and hallways, specialised bathroom

equipment and a hoist system that helps him get out of bed and into the bathroom and shower without assistance. Alan resides in one wing of the house, with his parents on the opposite side and the common living and dining areas located in the middle. Babin even has his own exterior entrance to his bedroom with a motorised door. This level of self-sufficiency is a life-changing development for Babin and his parents, who have been living with him and supporting his recovery since his injury.

“The Gary Sinise Foundation, in partnership with Nortek Security & Control are providing an incredible service for wounded veterans across the country,” Ridenour added. “Babin can now control his lights, climate, audio and video, and even his doors from his iPad. Whether he’s in his wheelchair, in bed, on a couch or out away from the home, this integrated control system allows Babin and the entire family to monitor the home and make changes from anywhere. It’s truly a life-changing home.”

The home’s entertainment technology is integrated into the ELAN system, including multiroom audio with 12 Niles in-ceiling speakers, a home theatre featuring Sunfire on-wall speakers and subwoofers, and Panamax power protection to keep all the expensive electronic equipment running smoothly for years to come. The system includes ELAN handheld remotes for TVs, wall-mounted lighting keypads for convenience, and ELAN touch panels that provide full system access and always-on intercoms for room-to-room communication.

VISION FOR VETSAccording to Judith Otter, Executive Director of the Gary Sinise Foundation, this latest home dedication continues the Foundation’s mission to better the lives of wounded veterans throughout the U.S.

“There are no words to describe the feeling we all get when a true American hero moves into a new specially adapted smarthome built with donations of time, money and equipment from partners all over the country,” Otter said. “We’re proud to support our nation’s most honourable citizens and provide any added comforts and capabilities that we can to improve their daily lives and offer increased self-reliance and mobility.”elanhomesystems.com

Crestron takes advanced tech to the countryside at an ingenious Inspired Dwellings installation…

Set in the tranquil Oxfordshire countryside, this stunning retreat is the perfect place to escape from the city and relax with friends or family. The property developer wanted to create a modern family home using the latest technology to attract affluent buyers. To achieve this, they decided on a flexible space that could serve as an intuitive, multi-functional media room that could be used as an immersive home cinema, living room or study area. Plus, to protect all that, the developer also required an automated security solution.

Integration expert Inspired Dwellings were tasked with delivering this comprehensive automation solution, connecting and managing all the technology within the property, so, focusing on the media room, they chose Crestron.

A Crestron control system was installed to deliver an adaptable media room space, incorporating an easy-to-use home cinema system which includes six audio zones, lighting and shades, alongside a CCTV system all controlled via Crestron touch screens to provide peace of mind for the future owner of this remote property.

EPIC ENTERTAINMENT“Due to the technical requirements of this house, we had to use a high-performance system that would be able to accommodate the client’s needs, and Crestron was top of the list, says Rob Sutherland, MD & Co-Founder of Inspired Dwellings. Crestron has helped us to create a flexible living space that is easily adjusted to suit a multitude of functions and it’s a great selling point for the developer.”

The multipurpose family space is the focal point of the property, designed as an area that could be used to entertain, with a bar, media room, vintage gaming tables and comfy sofas, but also with additional study space. By integrating audio, video, lighting and shades it offers flexibility to the family, enabling children to watch movies while the adults can log-on and catch up on work in the study area nearby.

In the media room, Inspired Dwellings installed a high-end 4K projector, speaker system and six zones of audio to deliver the experience of a home cinema, all controlled by Crestron touchscreens and remotes. The room features large bay windows, which could disrupt viewing so automated blinds were installed and connected to the Crestron system, to enable them to be closed at the touch-of-a-button, when the cinema was in use. Pre-set lighting and AV schemes were programmed into customised Crestron touch screens, for easy-to-use control for all the family. For example, selecting ‘movie’ can dim the lights, close the blinds and turn the AV onto movie-watching mode, or choose ‘Saturday Morning’ can open the blinds and launch the weekend playlist.

SAFE HANDSDue to the remote location and high specification of this property, the developer decided security was a key design factor. The Crestron system controls four CCTV cameras and for added security, a gate entry system. Cameras from the system feed directly to the Crestron touch screens, providing a clear picture of who is at the front gate even when they are upstairs or in the media room. The homeowners can also get access to the Crestron system on their smartphone via Crestron’s automation app Pyng. This app allows them to view the CCTV, get alerts when someone is at the front door, or even operate and manage their AV sources, blinds and lighting when they are away from home for additional peace of mind.
