Netherlands 2050 Energy Initiative

• By 2050, water, sun, wind, Geothermal and Biomass energy sources must form the majority portion of power supply for the Netherlands.

Why go green?• F-Gas emissions to be cut by 2/3 by 2030 in the EU.• F-Gases (Fluorinated Gases) are man made gases

with a global warming effect 23,000 times greater than Carbon Dioxide.

• One major form of F-Gases are Hydrofluorocarbons (HCFC) which are used as refrigerants in refrigeration or in air conditioning or heat pump equipment.

Cold stores and the Environment

Refrigeration systems contribute to greenhouse gas emission through energy consumption (indirect) and leakage of refrigeration, release of greenhouse gas (direct).

Why should cold stores address their carbon footprint?

• Corporate social responsibility.• Greening of the supply chain.• Regulatory context.• Cost savings, including energy and

refrigeration cost

Solar Panels fueling Dutch Cold Storage facility

• Kloosterboer Delta Terminal now has 1800 Solar Panels on its roof, providing part of the energy needed to run the cold storage complex.

• These panels produce enough energy to run 130 households.

Geothermal Energy

• Geothermal Energy comes from radioactive decay of the elements of the earth’s core.

• Energy is constantly being generated by heated water pumped out of molten rock.

• Electricity is being produced in the Netherlands to run greenhouses, commercial buildings and cold storage facilities.

Aquifer Cold Storage• Aquifer Cold-Energy Storage is based on

the use of groundwater to store winter cold for later use in the summer/warmer months.

• The colder groundwater is used for cooling cold storage facilities, buildings and the like during warmer months.

Night Wind?

Storing wind generated power in cold storage facilities.

“…I realized the possibilities of using refrigerated warehouses as thermal energy storage and therefore as

electrical energy storage," ~ Sietze van der Sluis.

The capacity of Europe's coldstores alone could handle more than twice the projected output of wind power in the

European Union.

Internet of things = tighter cold chain?

• Will the “internet of things” finally provide the platform for a tighter cold chain?

• When will the reefer container speak to the truck/trailer, who will in turn communicate with the cold store who will in turn advise the terminal of arrival or departure?

• Increased communication and coordination will increase efficiency and lower energy cost.

Genesys Global: High Efficiency Lighting Solutions

• gHID lighting systems are an extremely efficient option in cold storage lighting applications (40-75% energy savings)

• The Genesys gHID ballast extends the rated life of a standard lamp by 2 to 3 times, translating to a low maintenance solution

• Widest Operating Temperature– Max. Temperature 105 C– Min. Temperature -30 C

• Significantly decreases heat (thermal load) 40-75% wattage reduction

• gHID helps end users meet strict watts per square foot requirement Visit: www.LightRecreated.com

Sustainability

Going Green not only saves the Earth’s resources, it saves money

and reduces cost.
