    *** H1N1 Flu Update October 22, 2009 ***1 Current Flu Status in District 64

    2 Flu Vaccination Schedule

1 Current Flu Status in District 64

As expected by health officials, absences due to flu-like illnesses are occurring inDistrict 64. Symptoms include: fever of 100 degrees or above; cough; sore throat; runnyor stuffy nose; body aches; headache; chills; fatigue; and sometimes, diarrhea andvomiting. Typically, the ill person will have a fever and one or more of thesesymptoms.

The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) informs us that routine labtesting for H1N1 flu is not being recommended except for severely ill and hospitalizedpatients. Since seasonal flu is not generally seen this early in the year, it is assumed thatpersons with such flu-like symptoms have H1N1 flu.

District 64 has seen an increase in student absences. We appreciate that parents arebeing vigilant about keeping sick children home. Children should not return to schooluntil being fever-free (without fever-reducing medication) for 24 hours or as advised byyour physician, whichever is longer. A doctors note, however, is not required to returnto school.

We ask your cooperation:! Please report all symptoms when calling in children absent from school. This

information helps us monitor illness within our District so that we can supply timelyupdates to CCDPH. We will continue to work closely with the health department indetermining if and when any further steps may be needed.

! Please take the time to read three flyers included with this update:1. Warning signs that a child may have a serious illness due to the flu2. Action steps for parents with children at high risk for flu complications3. Seasonal and 2009 H1N1 Flu: A guide for parents

    2 Flu Vaccination Schedule

Please read the important guidance on seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccinations fromCCDPH attached to this update. CCDPH urges all parents to contact their health careprovider to schedule an appointment to vaccinate their child with the H1N1 vaccine.Your health care provider is the ideal source for your familys personal health needs.

In addition, as announced in the last school newsletter, District 64 is cooperating withCCDPH to offer H1N1 flu vaccinations to students at school later this fall. CCDPH hasannounced a schedule by zip code. At present, we believe that District 64 will not bescheduled to serve as a site for vaccinations until at least after Thanksgiving break. However, we expect to be updated by CCDPH later this month as the vaccination

program gets underway and more is known about the availability of the vaccine. Wewill utilize both Phone and E-Mail Alerts when we have more information about theschedule and to announce that parental permission forms and other information areavailable.
