Features
Premium PC-Series Right angle gear drives in single/double
reduction are intended to satisfy characteristics requirements and
conditions encountered in cooling tower drives. The series
covering models PC114 - PC145 having ratios ranges of 1.66:1 to
4.57:1 in single reduction and PC214 - PC245 having ratio ranges
5.06:1 to 20.9:1 in double reduction are exclusively meant for
cooling tower installations with features like uni-case casting, 3-
point foundation, pump less lubrication, bottom opening for end
float adjustment and combination of Labyrinth double oil seal
arrangements at fan end with double oil seal towards motor ends.
Bevel gears: Spiral bevel gears are manufactured from high
quality case-hardened alloy steels, generated in modern and
sophisticated systems, case hardened and lap finished in pairs.
Helical gears: Helical gears are machined from high quality case
hardened alloy steels, flank ground to precision accuracy grades
for low noise and vibration.
Case hardened surface with softer core provides improved wear
resistance and fatigue strength.
The gear strength is calculated followed by standard ANSI/AGMA
6013-A06.
Case: Grey cast iron casing is of rigid construction with necessary
ribbing reinforcement and design optimized to absorb fan loads
and dampen noise and vibration. They are provided with easily
accessible service ports.
Bearings: Taper / spherical roller bearings from major
manufacturers are used. These bearings are of ample capacity to
meet or exceed minimum life requirement as laid down by Cooling
Technologies Institute (CTI).
Life span of bearing:
Input, Intermediate shaft bearings > 50,000 hours L life10
Output shaft bearings > 100,000 hours L life10
Shafts: High strength case hardening alloy steels are used for
shafting. Direct hardening steel is used for low speed shaft.
Cylindrical seats for bearings, wheel seats, couplings and fan are
finished by precision grinding. These shafts have been designed
to accommodate external loads and fan stresses as appropriate.
Seals: Shaft extensions are fitted with high quality spring loaded
rubber seals to prevent outflow of oil. The ingress of external
contaminants including micro bubbles of water particles are
arrested by employing double oil seals with grease accumulation
in between. In addition, metallic labyrinth seal on low speed shaft
further takes care of the moist atmosphere.
Lubrication: Lubrication of gears and bearings is entirely self
contained by ‘Splash-lubrication’. Built in oil-thrower on the high
speed shaft ensures positive splash at all speeds resulting
continuous circulation of oil to top bearings through built in cast
channels and trays. Recommended lubricants are shown the
Lubricants charts.
Rotation: The drives are designed for high speed shaft rotations
1500 ~ 1750 r/min.
For units operating at input rpm below 750 r/min, Contact
Premium for additional information.
As per standard practice for cooling tower drives both the high and
low speed rotate ‘Clockwise’ when viewed on respective shaft
ends.
Reduction ratio: The allowable deviation of exact (actual) ratio is
± 3%.
Drive shaft: For better performance use of drive shafts made of
Composite / Carbon Fiber between motor and gearbox is
recommended.
Cooling: Standard drives are cooled by normal heat dissipation
through convection / radiation from externally exposed surfaces.
Thermal ratings are equal to or exceeds the service ratings when
the discharge air temperature is 50°C or less. Contact Premium
when the discharge temperature exceeds 50°C.
Accessories: Roller backstop device, provision for vibration
transducers, provision for temperature probe, oil level switch etc.

For Air breather and drain plugs, a pipe extending from the gearbox to outside the fan stack should be prepared by customer. This pipe is not under the scope of Premium supply. 4. Provision for temperature probe, vibration probe etc. and Oil level switch can be supplied upon request.

PC/RC SERIES COOLING TOWER DRIVES
Premium RC-Series
Premium RC-Series Right angle gear drives in single/double reduction are intended to satisfy characteristics requirements and conditions encountered in cooling tower drives.
These are designed as direct replacement for the equivalent models in terms of critical mounting dimensions.
The single and double reduction nominal ratios are maintained exact within 2% of the equivalent models which will eliminate the need for costly fan pitch adjustment after direct replacement.
The catalogue contains specification, dimension and rating for selection of standard gear drives against usual applications.
