Never Finished Sewers Spring Retreat at “Pieceful Haven”

The Never Finished sewers were recently on their annual Spring retreat at Pieceful Haven in Crestwood, Kentucky. Members Deborah Arnold, Donna Kautz, Joan Jasper, Marge Becker, Nancy Rodgers, and Susan Pedersen are enjoying getting away from home in order to finish quilts, go shopping at local quilt shops and enjoy good food. Tuesday, Diane Arlinghaus and Cheryl Becker joined us for the day to go shopping and eat at the Cheddar Box Cafe, we would all recommend for lunch . See one of us for more details about this delightful retreat.

VSU Reporting ~ It’s time to sing your praises!

Its time for your VSU logs (Volunteer Service logs) to be returned to the office. Volunteer Service Units/Hours (VSU’s) accumulated over the past year (July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016) should be submitted to the Extension Office by July 1. This new schedule will coincide with the ending of the KEHA year and the timing for all other reports. Please take time to keep track of any community service hours you donate. Time cooking, sewing or cleaning for others, preparing for a church program, driving to or from a presentation or presiding at a program for any group, church, civic, or Homemakers will count. You may use the form you received from your club president at the beginning of our homemaker year. There are two Volunteer Service Unit certificates – 1) Individual Certificate is for you, the individual member, who earns 500 or more hours. Keep in mind that these hours are cumulative. Continue to log in and collect hours until 500 is reached. New this year– hours totaling over 1000 need to itemized. 2) Club Certificate requires 1,000 hours from participating members for a Certificate of Recognition. Both the individual member and club use the same log for submitting their hours. You may be a winner! After you have reached your VSU goal, send your form to our office by July 1, 2016. We will send your VSU log to the Area Chair and in August, five randomly selected VSU logs will be drawn for local gift certificates. The five logs submitted with the most hours will also receive gift certificates. You can’t win if you don’t enter, so get your log up-to-date and send it in by July 1.

The Independence Homemaker Club

received a very nice “Thank You” note from the

Fort Wright Elementary School for

supporting their students.

Thank you to all of our homemakers for reaching

out to our community schools with help. It is

greatly appreciated by the children and teachers.

Tenderized beef or MTB will soon be labeled for consumers.

3 Things to Know about MTB

(1) M.T.B. stands for "mechanically tenderized beef." To increase tenderness some cuts of beef go through a process where needles or sharp blades are used to break up muscle fibers. The tenderizing process can take place in the factory, at a restaurant, or in the home.

(2) Risk. The process of mechanically tenderizing beef does pose some health risks. With this process, any pathogens on the outside of the steak may be transferred to the inside, posing a potential threat if the beef products are not cooked properly. Mechanically tenderized products look no different from products that are not mechan-ically tenderized. Know the facts and COOK to 145 F with 3 min stand time.

(3) New Labels. USDA is requiring labeling of raw or partially cooked beef products that have been mechanically tenderized. These requirements become effective in May 2016, and will provide consumers with more information about the products they are buying, as well as useful cooking instructions for preparing the products safely. Xylitol and Your Dog: Danger, Paws Off Your six-month-old puppy, will eat anything that isn’t tied down. Like many dog owners, you know chocolate can be dangerous to your pooch. But you may not know that if Hoover sticks his nose in your handbag and eats a pack of sugarless chewing gum, the consequences could be deadly. Sugarless gum may contain xylitol, a class of sweetener known as sugar alcohol. Xylitol is present in many products and foods for human use, but can have devastating effects on your pet. Over the past several years, the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received several reports—many of which pertained to chew-ing gum—of dogs being poisoned by xylitol, according to Martine Hartogensis, a veterinarian at FDA. And you may have seen recent news stories about dogs that have died or become very ill after eating products containing xylitol.

Other Foods Containing Xylitol But gum isn’t the only product containing xylitol. Slightly lower in calories than sugar, this sugar substitute is also often used to sweeten sugar-free candy, such as mints and chocolate bars. Other products that may contain xylitol include:

breath mints baked goods cough syrup children’s and adult chewable vitamins Mouthwash and toothpaste Why is Xylitol Dangerous to Dogs, but Not People? In both people and dogs, the level of blood sugar is controlled by the release of insulin

from the pancreas. In people, xylitol does not stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas. However, it’s different in canines: When dogs eat something containing xylitol, the xylitol is more quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, and may result in a potent release of insulin from the pancreas. This rapid release of insulin may result in a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that can occur within 10 to 60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can quickly be life-threatening.

If you think your dog has eaten xylitol, take him to your vet or an emergency animal hospital immediately, Hartogensis advises. Because hypoglycemia and other serious adverse effects may not occur in some cases for up to 12 to 24 hours, your dog may need to be monitored. (A note to cat owners: The toxicity of xylitol for cats has not been documented. They appear to be spared, at least in part, by their disdain for sweets.)

T ips for Insect Repellent Use You will likely find that repellents are very helpful tools in preventing many mosquito bites. Although repellents do not kill insects that may pester you this time of year, they certainly discourage

bites from happening. Here are a few tips to remember when you are using insect repellents: Some of the best protection can come from wearing long sleeves and long pants

when you are outside. When applying insect repellent, use it only on exposed skin. You do not have to put

it on underneath clothes unless the mosquitoes can pierce through the clothes. Avoid breathing in the repellent and keep it away from eyes. Avoid putting repellents on children’s hands. Children are more likely to put their

hands near their eyes and mouth. You should never put repellents on skin that is irritated or broken. Make sure to cover all exposed skin that is irritated or broken. Make sure to cover all exposed skin. A mosquito has the ability to find an uncov-

ered spot the size of a dime. Make sure to read how long the protection will last. Different types of repellent have

different amounts of time for protection. Make sure to wash all skin that has had repellent on it after coming indoors. Did you know that the University of Kentucky entomologists have

developed a website that will have the most up-to-date information on the Zika virus and its spread, as mosquito populations around the world begin to build? The website is: http://pest.ca.uky.edu/EXT/ZIKA/1kyzika.html
