4D LIFE USA TODAYMONDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2016
BEVERLY HILLS With hundredsof powerful Hollywood womencrowded into a ballroom Fridayafternoon, one topic kept comingup: Donald Trump.
The event was Variety’s annualPower of Women luncheon inHollywood, where stars includingLaverne Cox, Scarlett Johansson,Miley Cyrus, Ava DuVernay and Helen Mirren were honoredfor their commitment tophilanthropy.
“We’re here to celebrate wom-en and their p - - - - - -! Or as Ilike to call them, ‘Trump han-dles,’ ” deadpanned Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom, whohosted the festivities. Bloom an-nounced she was “going to intro-
duce these women and attemptthe rare feat of describing themwithout adjectives like beautiful, lovely, cute or sexy.”
She wasn’t alone. Later on-stage, speaking about her HappyHippie Foundation, Cyrus slippedin a reference to the “terrifying”responsibility that comes withpower and the “villainous vibesthat surround power and thepoor examples of how too manyleaders abuse it.”
“Yes,” she added, “that’s forDonald Trump.”
On the red carpet, Bloom toldUSA TODAY that disclosure ofTrump’s leaked Access Hollywoodtape, and the ensuing news cycle, hadn’t surprised her.
“Trump has always been amonster,” she said. “I think peo-ple like him because he remindsthem of their racist, misogynistuncle. And so I’m not shocked
that Trump gropes women. Ofcourse he gropes women.”
She added: “What I’m sur-prised at is the more progress we seem to make on one end, talking about rape culture andlooking at female issues and race… (the more) that people dig theirheels in the sand even more andbecome more racist and more
misogynist.”Talk of Hillary Clinton hung in
the air, too. Mirren, who was hon-ored for her work with the Stut-tering Association for the Young, predicted women would influ-ence the coming election in Clin-ton’s favor. “This is a definingmoment,” she said at the podium.“It’s time for the best role modelin the White House.”
In Hollywood, there’s “less andless misogyny” compared with 20 or 30 years ago, Mirren toldUSA TODAY. “There’s a greatconsciousness about those issues,in spite of what we see in the Access Hollywood tape and therest of it. What is said and donebehind closed doors ... some ofthose conversations probablywould make your hair stand onend. But in public, certainly, there’s great care withinHollywood.”
Cyrus brought beau LiamHemsworth to the event, andRobert Downey Jr. cracked upthe crowd by introducing hisAvengers co-star, who was hon-ored for her work with PlannedParenthood, as “ScarJo.”
Onstage, DuVernay made apoint to recognize women behindthe scenes in Hollywood, includ-ing lawyers, managers and agents.“It is important to me to have anall-women team,” she said. “Tomake a point about the impor-tance of the women’s voice in all aspects of the work we chooseto do.”
DuVernay’s advice for dealingwith misogyny?
“Call it out,” she told USA TODAY. “Confront it when yousee it. I just got that from mymother and where I grew up. Igrew up in Compton, so peoplewere more blunt.”
