Nancy Lieberman sits in a room fullof reporters and cameras, flanked bysweaty, tall basketball players. All eyesare fixed on Lieberman, despite her si-lence — and half her face covered by herarms.
She didn’t want the attention, butLieberman’s starting point guard en-sured she got it.
“I just want to take this time to talkabout our coach and why I think she’sthe best,” said Quentin Richardson, aformer NBA player and director of playerdevelopment for the Pistons. “She’s asprepared as any coach I’ve ever playedfor. I’ve played for Stan Van Gundy, Lar-ry Brown, Mike D’Antoni, Alvin Gentry, some great coaches, and she’s right upthere with any of them.”
Richardson’s words caused many ofthe reporters in the room to drop theirrecorders to clap in agreement.
“It’s almost embarrassing,” Lieber-man said. “But it hits my heart thatthese guys are just so kind to me. Wework very hard together for their suc-cess, and I’m really proud to be theircoach. God blessed me amazing men.”
Despite Lieberman wanting to stayon topic about her team the Power, which won its season opener in the BIG3basketball league Saturday night at Lit-tle Caesars Arena, Richardson’s mes-sage brought an important issue to light:Nancy Lieberman is a great coach andthe NBA is ready for a female headcoach.
One of the best
In the 73 years that the NBA has ex-isted, no woman has been a head coachfor one of its franchises. It wasn’t untilBecky Hammon was hired by the Spursas an assistant in 2014 that a female wasa part of the bench coaching staff.
Self-described as a poor Jewish girlfrom Queens, Lieberman, 60, has al-ways loved the game. In fact, she wasobsessed with it. She would travel toany camp she could, watch any gameand said that she would play any boywho dared.
As she developed her game, sheearned the nickname “Lady Magic” formoves that were reminiscent of NBAlegend and Michigan State great Earvin“Magic” Johnson.
She played in college at Old Domin-ion before playing professionally, was apart of the United States’ silver medal-winning team in the 1976 Olympics inMontreal and won gold in the 1979World Championships in Seoul. Whenthe WNBA was formed in 1997, she was amember of the Mercury. She was namedto the Naismith Basketball Hall of Famein 1996.
It was toward the end of her playingdays when Lieberman first got into
coaching. Rick Sund, former Pistonsgeneral manager, hired her as coach andgeneral manager of the WNBA’s Shockin 1998. From there, her passion for play-ing became one for coaching.
“It was amazing that you could helpmake people better and help themachieve their goals and dreams,” Lieber-man said.
It wasn’t an easy transition, though.Lieberman never made the playoffs withthe Shock and was fired in 2000.
Lieberman didn’t get another shot atcoaching until 2009 with the Texas Leg-ends, the developmental league affiliateof the Mavericks. With the job, Lieber-man became the first woman to evercoach a men’s professional basketballteam.
Lieberman did well with the Leg-ends. Using the years of guidance shereceived from coaches including PatSummit, Bob Knight and Pat Riley, sheled the Legends to the playoffs in herone season as head coach. People won-dered how a woman would be able tohandle a male locker room, but she nev-er focused on gender.
“Shame on me if I ever differentiatedgender; I coach people,” she said.
Welcome to the BIG3
After stints in the front office of theLegends, a TV analyst role with FoxSports Oklahoma and an assistant jobwith the Kings, Lieberman had no idea if
she’d coach again. That was until shegot a call from an old friend in the sum-mer of 2017.
NBA champion and Hall of FamerRick Barry was coaching and touringwith a 3-on-3 basketball team that wasplaying in Dallas, where Liebermanlived. He offered two tickets to Lieber-man and her son before asking if shewould be interested in some other seats— on the bench as his assistant coach. That night she was amazed by the ener-gy and the way the game was played.
That was her introduction to theBIG3.
Before the 2018 season, rapper andleague founder Ice Cube asked Lieber-man to take over the Power — a teamcomprised of retired NBA players suchas Richardson, Glen “Big Baby” Davis,Chris “Birdman” Anderson and CoreyMaggette. Lieberman accepted the job, determined to get one thing: a champi-onship ring.
“The guys on the team, most of themare multimillionaires, and the one thingmost of them didn’t have was the chip,”Lieberman said.
She changed that. The Power became the second team
in league history to win the title.“Let’s break all these barriers,” Ice
Cube said while presenting Liebermanthe league trophy last season amid adownpour of confetti at the BarclaysCenter. “A woman can do anything insports.”
Coming soon?
Those barriers are starting to break. After former Michigan coach John Bei-lein hired California coach LindsayGottlieb to his staff on the Cavaliers, there are now six female coaching assis-tants in the NBA.
Hammon (Spurs), Natalie Nakase(Clippers), Jenny Boucek (Mavericks),Kristi Toliver (Wizards) and ChasityMelvin (Hornets) are the others. Ham-mon has come the closest to securing ahead coaching position after interview-ing with the Bucks in 2017.
Lieberman is certain that a womanwill one day coach an NBA franchise, and she’s optimistic it will happen soon.
“Adam Silver has said numeroustimes within the last five or six monthsthat he would like to see a woman headcoach in the NBA sooner than later,” Lie-berman said. “I don’t know when, but itwill happen.”
As the room started to decompressafter Richardson’s speech, teammateCuttino Mobley chimed in by letting theroom know that when a woman is hiredto coach an NBA team the players betterembrace whoever she might be.
“We were raised by women,” Mobleysaid. “Especially at a young age. A lot ofus had our fathers around us, but thewomen were the backbone of us grow-ing up. So if you can’t listen to yourmother, then something’s wrong withyou. And Nancy is that leader for us.”
