WE NEED TO FIND OUR OWN WAY TO MAKE THE KEY INTERNATIONAL DIFFERENCE.

We are proud to welcome you to the Copen-

hagen Design Week. The biggest and most

ambitious design event in Denmark. An event

that helps manifest Denmark’s position with-

in the international design elite.

Copenhagen Design Week presents and

debates new ideas, knowledge and solutions

– design capable of enriching and exciting

a changing world. During the design week,

established and new events combine to

offer a rich source of insight, inspiration and

perspective. We open with a highly topical

theme: sustainable design, a topic that leads

into the UN’s Climate Change Conference

(COP 15), which takes place later this year.

A common quality of all the events is a

shared focus on design and architecture that

make a difference for businesses, society

and the climate. Together, the events of the

design week highlight the positive role that

design may play in relation to the environ-

mental and social challenges that the world is

facing. The deliberately high ambitions of the

design week and its unique blend of events

underscore the seriousness, the humour and

the pleasure inherent in innovative design.

We need to make a difference in the world

that we live in – and this applies to busines-

ses, political decision-makers and private

individuals alike.

Welcome to the Copenhagen Design

Week and a range of extraordinary experi-

ences. Enjoy!

INFORMATION

LET US ENTERTAIN YOU

Let’s come clean, I’m not a

designer and I’m not from the

design world. My background

rather is in television and cult-

ural events, so it’s been a big

learning experience for me to

head up Copenhagen Design

Week. And what I’ve learned is

the possibility and opportunity

in design today. My business

is storytelling. So let me stand

on firm ground and tell you a

few stories about Copenhagen

Design Week:

We wanted a single theme for

Copenhagen Design Week,

something to explore in detail.

With the UN Climate confer-

ence taking place in Denmark

later this year, ‘sustainable

design’ was an obvious choice

but how to approach it?

Sustainability can be pre-

sented as something quite

‘heavy’ or more about what

you shouldn’t do. Switch off

the lights, don’t travel, only

eat certain foods! Lower your

expectations, really. As an

experiment, we’ve taken the

opposite approach. Copen-

hagen Design Week is all

about the possibility and po-

tential in sustainable design.

It’s about doing more good and

not less bad. And having fun.

At Copenhagen Showhow,

a showcase of sustainable

design, you’ll discover the

Design Week at Amager Beach3

ABOUT DESIGN WEEK

optimistic, cool and a little bit sexy side of

sustainable design. At the INDEX:AWARD

exhibition, you’ll see exciting design objects

and projects from around the world pre-

sented in Copenhagen’s beautiful Kongens

Nytorv Square. At CO2PENHAGEN you’ll be

able to dance the night away in a miniature

sustainable society. At ”it’s a small world”

you’ll be a future navigator exploring poten-

tial scenarios for where design is going. And

Link UP will be taking over the city with their

vision of a sustainable Copenhagen. That’s

just a taste of what’s on. There’s a lot to see

and also to hear. In addition to the events

and exhibitions, there’s a fantastic pro-

gramme of seminars and talks, some open

to everyone, some targeted to a business

audience.

So my advice to you is to look through this

programme, choose the events that you

want to participate in and then pick one or

two more that are a little bit out of the

ordinary. We hope to surprise you.

FACTS ABOUT COPEN-

HAGEN DESIGN WEEK:

”WHAT WE NEED IS NEW SOLUTIONS – NOT PROHIBITIONS AND DICTATES AND DRAB PRIVATIONS. WE WILL HAVE SMARTER TRANS-PORTATION, CLEANER ENERGY SOURCES. WE CAN HAVE THE SAME, ONLY WITHOUT THE NOISE AND AIR POLLUTION, WE CAN CREATE INTELLIGENT HOMES, WE CAN SEND TECH-NOLOGY TO DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, WE CAN CREATE GREEN GROWTH. “WE NEED TO MOVE AWAY FROM OBSOLETE NOTIONS OF SUSTAINABILITY AND GROWTH AS EACH OTHER’S OPPOSITES. DANISH COMPANIES ARE AMONG THE MOST ENERGY-EFFICIENT IN THE WORLD, AND AT THE SAME TIME THEIR VALUE CREATION IS IN THE INTERNATIONAL ELITE. IT IS TIME NOW TO BEGIN TO COMBINE SUSTAINABI-LITY AND GROWTH – WE NEED TO MAKE AN ACTIVE EFFORT TO ENABLE THE BUSINESS SECTOR TO BENEFIT FROM THE SUBSTANTIAL GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES THAT WILL EMERGE FROM THE ENDEAVOUR TO MEET THE CLIMATE CHALLENGE.”

LENE ESPERSEN, THE DANISH MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS

“COPENHAGEN DESIGN WEEK OFFERS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE, PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND MARKETING OF DANISH PRODUCTS AND DESIGN SERVICES AND FOR DEMONSTRATING THAT DANISH DESIGN IS THE INTERNATIONAL, SUSTAIN-ABLE DESIGN OF THE FUTURE. DANISH DESIGN CENTRE IS PROUD TO HEAD THE COPENHAGEN DESIGN WEEK 2009. WE HOPE THAT THE DESIGN WEEK WILL FUNCTION AS AN INTERNATIONAL INSPIRATION PLATFORM FOR COMPANIES, DESIGNERS AND EDUCAT-

IONAL INSTITUTIONS.”

CHRISTIAN SCHERFIG, MANAGING DIRECTOR, DANISH DESIGN CENTRE

ABOUT DESIGN WEEK

If you have already had more than you can

take of the debate on environmental issues

and sustainability, the good news is that the

concept is becoming an integrated part of the

design process – which we don’t necessarily

have to talk about all the time.

Today, sustainability principles are a

natural part of designers’ everyday work,

and the design world is getting better at

spotting the potential in new bio-degradable

materials, reclaimed raw materials and

sustainable production methods.

Even the best design is a drain on the

earth’s resources. But fortunately, design

can sometimes be the solution when new

technologies and products are to be inte-

grated into our everyday life. Designers can

help change consumer behaviour by making

sustainable design accessible, functional and

aesthetic.

The sustainability issue can be a bit of a

jungle to navigate as ads extol the virtues

of CSR, FSC-wood, fair trade, innovative pro-

duction methods, new materials and CO2-

friendly transportation. And there are no

easy answers. But there are many opportu-

nities for gaining insight into the full range

of sustainable design if you delve into the

activities of the Design Week. And insight

makes it easier to make well-informed

sustainable decisions.

ABOUT DESIGN WEEK

PARTY WITH THE DESIGNERS: There are plenty of things to do for people who

love to party. Copenhagen will be abuzz with

activity throughout the week. You can register for

events at www.copenhagendesignweek.dk. The

tickets are allotted on a first-come, first-served

basis.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: Design Week is for everyone. Kids can go

treasure hunting at Copenhagen Architecture

& Design Days. Music fans can hear great

bands at CO2PENHAGEN. Company CEOs can

learn more about sustainability as a business

strategy at the knowledge seminars. And most

of the events are for free, so there’s every

reason to participate.

ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS: Design Week will be marked with a

series of ”boxes” in key locations. But

no trees were harmed in the making

of these boxes, as they are made from

Rock Paper - paper made from rocks.

This material is a new development in sustainable paper, so we

were keen to explore its potential.

EMERGING TALENT: Copenhagen

Design Week wants to showcase the vast amount

of talent among future designers. At the Town Hall

Square (Rådhuspladsen) you can follow a design

idea from the drawing board to the finished pro-

duct, as students receive a brief from a company in

Innovation Camp. Students also demonstrate their

skills at SHOWHOW in HAL-D, where sustainable

projects from the architecture and design schools

are shown as part of a competition which had Ross

Lovegrove as one of the judges.

VISITING COPENHAGEN: To keep up with the

mobile events of the Design Week, you must be prepared to

tour the entire city. Hop on a bike, take the CODE09 buses to

visit the city’s design shops and showrooms, or take a walk

through town. You may also stroll past the young architects’

and designers’ visions for building a sustainable metropole in

Link UP’s five routes in the city.

EXTENDING LIFE: The idea

behind Cradle-to-Cradle is to transfer the

principles from natural cycles, where all

resources are reused in new forms, in an

effort to renew product lifecycles and

reduce waste. The concept is best known

from the documentary film Waste = Food,

and companies such as Ford, Nike

and Phillips have already adopted the

strategy. You can meet one of the

champions of this concept “live” at the

Knowledge seminar about Cradle-to-

Cradle as a business strategy.

DURING THE WEEK

“At VELUX Group we

strive to ensure that

our everyday sur-

roundings become

healthier and more

climate-friendly. Copenhagen

Design Week is an excellent plat-

form for us to demonstrate how to

enhance our overall quality of life.”

- Michael K. Rasmussen,

Director of Branding and

Communication, VELUX Group

“With its support,

Dreyer’s Foundat-

ion wishes to help

facilitate sustain-

ability in design and

architecture. With the state of the

world today, sustainability is no

longer optional. It is a prerequisite

for continued life.”

- Bo Rygaard, Board Member of

Dreyer’s Foundation

A major project such as the Design

Week would not be possible with-

out support. Copenhagen Design

Week has three main sponsors.

Here are their motivations for

supporting this new project.

WITH A LTTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS

“Copenhagen

Design Week is

the ideal platform

for us to share our

knowledge, tell

our stories, show our sustainable

products, and achieve unique

inspiration for our never-ending

job of helping to create a better

everyday life.”

HARBOUR BIKE: Using the unused ‘roads’ of the city, the project

creates new connections across the harbour, revitalizing both banks and

benefiting both inhabitants and visitors by making it possible to travel from

one place to another in the easiest, soundest and most environmentally

friendly way: crossing the water on bike. Starting point: HAL-D (Strand-

gade 95) <-> Højbro Plads. (Made by: Troels Øder Hansen/Dull Days, Sandra

Johansson, Shift Control Interaction design).

CITY INTERCOM: Citizens have adapted steps around town as an

informal piece of furniture for conversation and gathering. The project takes

this change from pragmatic function to a means of social interaction further

through a series of newly created steps. Starting point: Danish Design

Centre (HC Andersens Boulevard) <–> Hotel Skt. Petri (Krystalgade) (Made

by: Anne Haaning/Manstrem, Inger Margrethe Larsen, Morten Emil Engel).

DETOURING THE TOUR: An invitation to voluntary detouring in

central Copenhagen. Get lost in the city even if you know it well.

Starting point: Hotel Skt Petri (Krystalgade) <-> Kgs Nytorv.

(Made by: Isabel Ahm/Usus, JAJA Architects, Philip Dam Roadley-Battin).

MEKANO CITY: Mekano City emphasizes experiences that go unseen

and questions the idea of the city as a static structure. Through three inter-

ventions on the route, the project encourages playful perspectives on city

spaces and their transformation. Starting point: Højbro Plads <-> Danish

Design Centre (HC Andersens Boulevard 27). (Made by: Louise Hold Sidenius/

Typografisk afdeling, Mia Scheel Kristensen, Ronald Laurits Jensen).

THE POCKET PARK: The Pocket Park is a patch of grass, shade

and quality of life in the midst of the city. The Pocket Park is such a good

idea that you wonder why it hasn’t been done yet… Starting point: Kgs

SOCIAL ACTION

HAVE AN NGO MEMBER ON YOUR COUCH

SHOWING FRENCH DESIGN- SO GREEN

IN ADDITION TO THE CURATED SHOWCASE, SHOW-HOW AT HAL-D OFFERS LOTS OF INDEPENDENT EXHIBITIONS, DESIGN AND SOCIAL EVENTS.

Life in HAL-D gives you plenty of opportunity to network while learning about the

latest developments in sustainable design. If your throat feels a little dry after all

these experiences, stop by the café. If your mind begins to overload, take a break

and enjoy the view of Copenhagen’s beautiful harbour. And if your credit card needs

some exercise, the shop offers a wide selection of sustainable design products.

Ud over den kuraterede showcase

Copenhagen SHOWHOW byder HAL-D

design og socialt liv.

CASE PRESENTATIONSFrom Friday 28 August until Friday

4 September, between 14:00 and 18:00,

companies from Denmark and abroad,

present inspiring business cases about

social or sustainable design. These cases

may address anything from business

strategies to material research, social

systems, and sustainable production

methods. An updated list of the case

presentations will be available on

copenhagendesignweek.dk. Prior

registration is not required.

NEW LIFE COPENHAGEN is looking for

Danish hospitality. At HAL-D you can

sign up as a host if you want to offer

your couch to an NGO member during

the United Nations’ Climate Change

Conference. With the local hotels fully

booked, the visitors have nowhere to

stay, so this project aims to solve a

major practical problem. At the same

time, it is a social experiment that

invites us all to rethink our way of life.

Sustainable energy, recycled materials,

less packaging and new ways of living –

all in order to protect the environment.

Through an exclusive selection of new

products, French designers show how we

can rethink the objects that surround us

in our everyday life. The exhibition will

help you set up guidelines for what to

consider when you want to act in a more

“eco-friendly” manner.

Social Action develops environmental

projects with a social focus. Here, user-

driven innovation methods are used to

change people’s behavior in the direct-

ion of more eco-friendly behavior. For

example, a project on the Danish island

of Bornholm is exploring

how a society

might be moti-

vated to collect

organic waste

for use in a

KNOWLEDGE

This seminar addresses anyone who shares

an interest in the organizational changes

related to implementing complex concepts

such as CSR or sustainability in a knowledge-

based organization.

The theme of the seminar is the concept

of design as a tool for management and

leadership. Can we look at design processes

as a framework for a new understanding of

organizational change – and thereby help

to fulfill visions, as we face complex challen-

ges with unpredictable consequences? The

seminar is arranged in co-operation between

Danish Standards, Visionpool, Lila and

“Rummet” in Republikken.

Dette seminar giver et bud på, hvordan

design kan danne rammen for forandringer i

videnbaserede organisationer, når komplek-

se koncepter som CSR eller bæredygtighed

Sustainable design involves new challenges

for small and medium-sized enterprises.

It questions the ways in which companies

design and develop products and services.

But the storytelling and advertising activities

also need to be re-designed. In order to do

that, your company needs to find out what

it is doing for the climate – and find ways to

communicate this to customers, colleagues

and competitors. Presentations and short

exercises will demonstrate how communi-

cation about climate issues will strengthen

your competitiveness in the marketplace.

Marie Kraul and Sascha Amarasinha, the

authors of “First Aid to Communication on

Climate”, will be the facilitators. The work-

shop is created by Danish Standards.

Workshoppen giver et bud på, hvordan små

og mellemstore virksomhed får en markant
